“Zero star” experience...don’t bring your date
Sagano
2021-05-28
Due to last minute booking we got a table at the sushi counter. The menu consisted of kaseki meals above HKD$1,500 per set. I ordered the teppanyaki set while my friend ordered the Top Chef set...both menu had 6-7 dishes each. The dishes for my meal were brought out so quickly that at one point 3 dishes were sitting in front of me....getting cold in the aircon. Meanwhile the opposite happened for my friend...after her first two dishes she had to wait 30 mins for her third dish, 10 mins or so for her fourth dish and so on. And to top it off, the dishes in her meals consisted of veggie tempura and beef with rice that had zero creativity in preparation. I finished my meal (partially forced) at least a good 40 mins before my fiend and had to wait for her to catch up before we had our dessert together. The experience is ridiculous I was rendered speechless. For a meal of that price, you know I won’t be back for seconds. And dear reader, don’t say I didn’t warn you...never bring your date here …Read More

Great experience

As part of our Michelin tour, we tried the Chef Recommended All Crab 8-course dinner. Aside from appetizer and dessert, every dish featured my fav crustacean, from the roe to the meat; made into soup, pan fried and steamed. Every dish was tasty, though the most memorable happened to be the fried rice, which is light and fluffy and incredibly flavorful. The freshness of the crab was accentuated by none other than the humble spring onion. You know the chef is skillful when the simplest dish with the simplest ingredient tastes the best. There was really no need to douse the fried rice with the Chinese yellow wine, chicken oil and roe from earlier dish, as suggested by the server. Coupled with attentive service, the restaurant lives up to it’s Michelin status; despite us not ordering its specialities of Peking Duck or Suckling Pig. P/S: We did not book online but we were told there is a discount if you do so.…Read More

Cheap and cheap
Te Quiero Mucho
2020-09-16
Arrived ahead of our appointment and took a seat at the bar while we waited. Enjoyed a pitcher of cooling mocktail with a serving of nachos. By the time we were shown to our seat, we were half full. Though we arrived right before 6pm, every table was occupied....but clearly there more drinkers than diners. By the time we were shown to our table, the crowd was getting loud. The food, while respectable, is nothing to write home about. Or maybe we just got stuffed on nachos. The service is decent but again nothing to write home about. The bill was the only surprising element of the evening...less than HKD400 for a main, a nachos and another starter, churros and a pitcher of mocktail...cheap by Hong Kong standards. All in all, as a restaurant, pretty average. Seemed more popular as a drinking hole.…Read More

Heavenly neighborhood bliss
Sushi Man
2020-09-16
Firstly, the experience, after reminders during booking and via SMS, we arrived on the dot as appointed but the doors were yet to opened. There were already 2 young couples waiting outside. We popped in shop next door to enjoy the air-con while waiting and a call came 5 mins after, asking if we “were nearby”....strange that they seem to expect customers to be on time when they themselves were not. Secondly, the setting - the interior is minimalistic Japanese...hygienic but almost basic. Thirdly, the service....brisk and clearly indifferent in keeping with the Hong Kong spirit of efficiency. However the amazing freshness and quality of food more than makes up for the unimpressive experience. Along with the very reasonable price tag of HKD880 for A 10-course omakase, consider me sold. But avoid this if you are looking for a 4-star experience.…Read More

Kamigishi Restaurant
2020-04-29
What do you say about a Japanese restaurant in a city full of Japanese restaurants? Kamigishi stands out for simple and natural tasting dishes. Green pepper and gingko skewers are usually quite plain with a dash of salt but here it’s served all natural sans salt, with a dollop of minced ginger by the side. The natural taste (and the freshness) of the ingredients really comes through. My favorite must be the onigiri...lightly roasted with a few strand of shisou leaf. So simple yet so good.…Read More

Terrible table mgmt
OM Tapas
2020-04-29
We called right before 8pm to enquire about availability of a table and they advised us one would be available in 40mins. We arrived half past eight and waited till 9pm only to be told that there’s no table available and maybe one will be available in 15mins but no guarantee. I understand these are difficult times for restaurants but stringing hungry customers along isn’t the right answer...I won’t be back.…Read More

Good but expensive
Sabatini Ristorante Italiano
2020-02-22
Ended up here on Valentine’s Day when the Japanese restaurant was full. They were offering a set menu for $3200 for two or ala carte with minimum spend around the same amount. We opted for the set menu. The food was good and service was attentive but IMHO a tad overpriced. They also have a live band serenading diners but it so too loud that it was difficult to have a decent conversation. …Read More

Fantastic find on Austin Ave
Scarlett Cafe & Wine Bar
2020-02-22
A fantastic find on Austin Ave...cosy French restaurant with excellent food and great service. First visited last Christmas Day and was looking forward to a 2nd visit. The food didn’t disappoint - half a dozen oysters, burrata salad, asparagus soup, mussels and lemon meringue...all very agreeable to the tastebuds. Shoutout to Clement, the manager, for friendly and speedy service. A very enjoyable experience. Photos were from both visits. …Read More

Le Salon De Thé de Joël Robuchon
2019-02-08
Even though only about 3-4 out of 10 tables were occupied when we walked in, they made us wait while they clean a table and SPECIFIED that we needed to wait in the area barricaded for queues. If we had not been terribly worn out from shopping I would have walked off. Make a statement with your food, leave the snobbish antics behind.…Read More

Worth a visit if you like spicy food
Sichuan House
2018-05-26
There is two things about Sichuan House that is different from a standard Szechuan restaurant....1) they have skewers on the menu; 2) if you order the signature “water boil fish” you can add up to 4 other ingredients...such as luncheon meat, enoki mushrooms or lotus roots, just to name a few. They also have a spicy mangrove snail starter which tasted fabulous. My friends drank beer while I settled for the tea (which is likely a house blend but looked a bit like 8-treasures tea) which was frangrant and perfect for washing down the spicy oil. Will be back. And will definitely try the skewers next.…Read More

Disappointing
MEXUS
2018-03-18
Came here for Sunday brunch to celebrate a friend’s birthday. We both love Mexican food. Firstly it offers typically bad Hong Kong service in the sense that we booked a table and were told the only options were the bar table or the patio. People were smoking in the patio so we opted for the bar table. As we walked back in we spotted a small table beside the bar and the waitress had no choice but to offer that to us. I wondered why she refused to offer that to us in the first place. It was free flow of brunch items which we helped ourselves to on a lower floor connected by stairs within the restaurant. As we walked up and down we spotted more tables for two which was also not offered to us. Secondly, the food was rather tasteless and nothing to write home about. Both of us ordered steak as mains, took 3 bites and decided to give up. That’s how bad it was...since my principle is never to waste food. The paella was ok but the taco was at best mediocre (when it was served that is)....they offered fish, mushroom and turkey tacos on free flow and we ordered one of each to try out. The fish tacos arrived and was so forgettable that we did not bother to ask for the other two. I read many positive reviews here...I hope that my disappointing experience was an isolated one.…Read More
