Thai in Fast Food Style...
So Thai So Good
2016-01-06
What a catchy name, when you first heard it. Its an addition in Hong Kong Restaurant scene by the famous King Parrot Group. Its located in the Miramar Mall, at the corner of Kimberly road and Nathan road.A good sized restaurant which has a special vegetarian menu for people like us.More importantly it has a wider variety of desserts and yogurt drinks specially served in milk bottles like yore. Its a fast paced Thai restaurant with some Italian inspired dishes for the rest of your group not preferring Thai.We tried the Pad Thai, Green Curry, Papaya Salad which was not authentic, but still good for the taste. We tried a mushroom dish, which was not Thai but tasty nonetheless. The mango yogurt drink was good, and the other yogurt drinks with people on different tables, looked fresh and very popular. But its the dessert which sold me the place to come back once again. The Lime Creme Brulee and the Chocolate Volcano Cake with Ice cream were amazing.Being a new restaurant, it was full on weekday and the service was a little haphazard. Not the best place to try Thai, but still a good restaurant with good food and amazing desserts.Check my blog for more pictures…Read More

All Hype Less Fizz
Yardbird
2016-01-06
Yard Bird is apparently quite famous in Hong Kong for its supposedly 'Great Food' and more importantly 'No Reservation' concept.I think its the latter part of the concept which has created all the hype which leads the human instinct fall more for it.Two failed trips in last two years , because each time there was a two hour wait .... (lots of two's !!)Finally we got a table rightaway for a dinner on a holiday which was pretty surprising.A small restaurant in Sheung Wan but apparently better to come from Central (Mid - Level Escalators) if you want to avoid a steep staircase from Sheung Wan MTR station.Yard Bird is basically a Yaki-Tori Japanese Resto at heart with imaginative starters thrown along. Sadly there is not a single dish friendly for vegetarians in the Yaki-Tori section which was a little disappointing. We opted for 2 starters : KFC (Kentucky Fried Cauliflower) & Corn Cobs with 1 Mushroom Udon Noodles.1. Amongst all the dishes, KFC was a very unique and tasty dish which you must have not eaten anywhere else. Its on a sweeter side but stays good tills its warm.2. Corn Cobs are good sized sweet corn cobs fried with some spices. Its good, but the portion is quite huge to fill you up, and eventually its too much of Corn !!3. Mushroom Udon noodles were the most disappointing of all dishes, because the noodles were chewy and not like the ones we have had in other Japanese restaurants. The portions of starters are huge , so you need to order accordingly. The service is efficient. For a nearly 2 year wait, plus the steep hike from Sheung Wan to the resto, and then somewhat disappointing food, Yard Bird is not worth it. You can find better vegetarian friendly restaurants serving Japanese food.Check my blog for pictures…Read More

Where the food can never go wrong !
Nomads
2016-01-06
A smart business model for a restaurant which can never have any food complaints ! Because all ingredients are provided to you mix them in your proportions & just ask the restaurant to cook it for you .Welcome to Nomads, which was years ago, known as Kublai . Themed as a Mongolian camp with sheep skin covered chairs, cow skulls hanging on walls. Its eventually the food that matters, and you wont leave disappointed. Its a decent sized restaurant so it would be advisable to make reservation because its unlimited buffet style. So this is not a place for a quick bite. There is a huge variety of raw ingredients waiting to be chosen. You can either customize a pizza or noodles in wok style. Add ingredients in your proportion, mix unheard combinations, add condiments at your will, mix sauces using your imagination and finally give it in kitchen with a token number, and ask them to just cook for you. Also there is always a soup, some starters and salads to warm up before you attack on your preparations. During dinner , they have an assortment of desserts as well.Since you prepared it, you will never disown it immediately. You will try to prove that its eatable or its the best in your group. But even if you do not like, leave it and make a new one. That the benefit of unlimited buffet. This is a place where you can prepare dishes which are not available elsewhere... like for me its my Tofu-Noodle-Coriander pizza with green curry sauce base !Sounds absurd, but tastes brilliant. There is no fixed formula for a nice dish.. just go enjoy yourself and be at your imaginative best in cooking !Check my blog for pictures…Read More

Experiment your vegetarian tastes with their wide
The Herbivores
2016-01-06
A small restaurant in the popular SOHO area, which serves vegetarian Italian cuisine. Sounds unique ! Well, the dishes and tastes are also unique, which you cannot repeat anywhere in Hong Kong. Its a very small restaurant, with one big center dining table enough for a big family of 10 or 12 back home, but here you have to share this table with other customers. Its a unique dining experience and not an uncomfortable one. There is a big menu on one wall , with drinks menu on edge of the ceiling. The menu is constantly changing which makes it worth going again and again. The portions are average , enough to share between 2-3 people.Have tried many dishes here, and none of them are bad. Some of them are little rebellious if the Italians came to know about it.1. Japanese Plum PastaA fusion of Japanese and Italian, as the name suggests it combines Japanese sour plum with an olive oil based pasta with seaweed. Maybe not a cup of tea for everyone, but its worth trying if you love Japanese cuisine. And a thumbs up to Herbivores for thinking out of the box.2. Pesto Sauce PastaIts literally an evergreen pasta , and if you are in no mood to experiment then go ahead with this. Its a nice creamy in rich pesto sauce, which would melt away in your mouth.3. Avocado RollNow comes a Mexican-Italian fusion. This appetizer may have European combination of ingredients but its presented like a sushi. But its a nice appetizer to warm up your appetite. And there are other pastas, vegetarian mushroom steak, tofu main courses, caprese, bruschetta, soup of the day.In all there is a wide range in the menu, and its upto your mood of the day to choose your dishes. The staff is friendly and with 1 or 2 servers catering to you.The male restroom is worth a visit , to see how Hong Kong utilizes each and every inch in this space crunch city !Never tried their brunch, but have heard good reviews from those who have had their brunch there.Definitely not a place for group dining, but a different experience for a couple or two.…Read More

Relaxed Mediterranean Lounge with Decent Munchies
Awtar
2016-01-05
Being true to the theme, Awtar succeeds in creating a very chilled out, relaxed ambiance ideal for spending a comfortable time. Coupled with quality Sheesha & decent Mediterranean food, you do not mind sitting here for hours.A new entrant on the restaurant scene in 2015, Awtar just looks like any small eatery in the SOHO area of Hong Kong where predominantly ''Customer Turnover'' gets the priority over "Customer Service''.Fortunately, the restaurant is very welcoming & the service is very attentive. They have decently priced quality Sheesha & the servers regularly maintain the Sheesha during your stay. Thankfully, good music is played at a decent decibel where shouting is not necessary to talk with your companions.Being more of a lounge, it still pays attention to the cuisine it offers. With a very vegetarian friendly menu, you are at a luxury to choose what you want to eat, and hence Awtar does not get monotonous on repeat trips. We had the Watermelon Salad with Halloumi, Feta Dip, Fried Doughs filled with Spinach, Peynir Rolls, Zattar & Cheese Pita, Falafel Balls, Hummus & Kompir. The Watermelon Salad with Halloumi is a MUST, and should not be missed. All the other dishes are decent fillers with Zattar Pita & Falafel balls being tasty & authentic. Only the Kompir was a big let down, which sounded good on paper, but completely lacked taste. The portions are decent sized enough for 4 people. The prices are consistent to prices of restaurants in SOHO, and not overtly expensive for the number of hours you end up relaxing here.If you are not in a rush, and looking forward to a place to spend more than a couple of hours over drinks, Sheesha & decent munchies, you can surely spend your money on Awtar.…Read More

Best Varieties for Vegetarians
Kyoto Joe
2016-01-04
Vegetarian and Japanese seems like 2 extreme ends of a rainbow but Hong Kong has many restaurants having vegetarian Japanese options and Kyoto Joe is one of the best for vegetarians.Located in the Central area, its a huge restaurant in an upscale building in the party district -LKF.It has the customary sushi bar with servers greeting you in Japanese. Had heard good reviews from Non- Vegetarian friends, so went with the expectation that at least will find vegetarian sushi.Surprisingly they have 2 full pages dedicated to vegetarians in the menu. Lots of starters, many variety for sushis and tempuras, soups, udons. We had the following :Fried Bean Curd with Black Miso Sauce : Silky tofu fried lightly to have a crispy outer layer with black miso sauce tasted great when eaten with little wasabi and soy. A nice starter to awaken your taste buds.Mix Veg Sushi : Its one of the best sushis I ever had. Interlaced with raw vegetables it also had something crispy inside which gave it an excellent texture.Mix Veg Tempura : Was a nice assorted platter of vegetables and tasted nice with spicy tangy mayonnaise sauce. Only the sweet potato was a disappointing vegetable. Mushrooms were great , and if you are fan of the fungus than can have the whole mushroom tempura.Fried Udon with Vegetables : A nice saucy Japanese noodles stir fried with vegetables tasted good. Again the mushrooms were the highlight. Kyoto Joe sources one of the best mushrooms, so maybe anything which has mushroom would taste good.At the end they give a complimentary fruit platter consisting watermelon, musk melon , dragon fruit & coconut jelly. A nice touch to end your meal.Prices are little more than average but its a great option to have vegetarian Japanese food.…Read More
