Great decor, disappointing food
Poppy's Restaurant & Wine Bar
2014-08-16
Came here on a sunday evening and it was only half full. Restaurant was decorated with vintage-style tables, chairs, couches, cushions etc. The decor was great, but the food was expensive and disappointing. To be honest, even if these dishes costed under $50-100, I would not come here again. Clam Cream Soup with Bread (included in set)Lots of clam meat in the soup and the clam flavour was well blended into the taste of the soup. However, it was slightly fishy. Bread was crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. Caeser Salad with Smoked Salmon and Parma Ham Dinner Set $17XConsisted of mostly lettuce. There was only one slice of salmon and one slice of parma ham. Smoked salmon was average but parma ham was dry and extremely salty, to the point that the ham could barely be tasted. Croutons were huge chunks of unseasoned bread. Overall, VERY expensive for both quantity and quality.  Squid Ink Spaghetti with Prawns $13X (+$28 to turn into set) Although I thought that this would be cooked in squid-ink sauce, it was actually cooked in a tomato-based sauce and the flavour was very heavy in basil. Spaghetti had no squid ink flavour to it at all. At one point, I thought I could taste a lard flavour in the dish too. Prawns were alright, quite crunchy.  DrinksAll the sets came with soup+bread (above) as well as a drink (tea or coffee). Cold drinks (including iced tea) were an extra $4 - is this really necessary at such a 'posh' restaurant? The waitress took our orders for three drinks, including two that were for less ice. Afterwards, another waitress came with our drinks and asked us if we had ordered all three with less ice. It wasn't that difficult of an order to make …Read More

Happy Thai Food Indeed!
Happy Garden
2014-07-21
Awesome thai food! As someone who has travelled many times to Thailand, this is definitely a great temporary substitute until next time! We came here with two dogs and they glady seated us at a table near the outside for convenience! Waiters/waitresses were friendly and happy to serve. Satay was very meaty and marinated with loads of spices. Came with a sauce, but I didn't even need it as the meat itself was seasoned well enough!Curry in Bread: delicious! Bread was fluffy on the inside and crispy out - perfect for absorbing the curry sauce. Curry sauce was sweet and bursting with flavour! This dish is quite filling and can be ordered as a main/carb dish. Roast Chicken: very authentic. The skin was crispy and meat was marinated thoroughly.  Pad Thai…Read More

Felt like fast-food at a sophisticated place!
Greyhound Café (國際金融中心)
2014-07-21
We were told upon being seated that we had only 1.5 hour to finish our food, which was fair enough considering it's location and the que waiting outside. Food came within 5mins of us ordering. Soft Shell Crab with Ink Spaghetti $118Dish was cooked in a garlic sauce with chilli peppers - simple and light, yummy! The waiter warned me that this dish would be spicy, so I asked for it to be mild. Soft shell crab was delicious, although not very meaty. Ink spaghetti did not taste much of squid ink. Overall, it was tasty but crab could have been more meaty? As soon as we finished, the waiter took away our plates and asked us if we wanted the dessert menu. Even though we were nowhere near the 1.5 hour limit, I felt that we were rushed. Overall, the food and service was quite good. The decor was also very modern and sophisticated. However, if you want a nice place to sit, relax and chat, this is definitely not the place!…Read More

Amazing Burgers!
Burgeroom
2014-07-20
Foie Gras Beef Burger $148Amazing combination! Beef was really juicy and foie gras was soft - creating a mouth-water, salvia-inducing combination! The burger was literally dripping with juice, so lettuce on the side played a great role in absorbing the dripping beef juice. Soft Shell Crab Burger $95Soft shell crab was huge - it looked like the burger had legs and could stand up and walk any moment! Crab meat was flavoursome and the body part was meaty, so even though the burger bread was quite thick, the crab flavour came out really well. Seasoned deliciously with spiced salt. Bottled drinks were mostly $25 each. Because there isn't a lot of space, the tables are quite squished together.…Read More

Quick Eat-And-Go Waffles
Ocio
2014-02-03
We arrived at this place at around 8:30pm and already there was a couple in front of us waiting for a table. We ended up having to wait 10-15mins for a table of four. All ice cream were Movenpick!! Dark Chocolate and Orange Napoleon $33Since I don't like artificial orange-flavoured foods, I was quite skeptical of this one at first. But the orange turned out to be just fruits sitting at the top and went really well with the dark chocolate. Pastry was soft and crispy, which was great except for when it all fell apart when I tried to use a fork to eat it!Green Tea Waffle with White Chocolate and Cookies and Cream Ice CreamSlight, subtle green tea flavour in the waffles. As a green tea fan, I  would have preferred it better if the flavour was stronger. White chocolate was a thoughtful little topping to have but didn't really go well with green tea. It would perhaps also have been better if they melted it as the chunky white chocolate meant that you could not taste the green tea flavour in the waffles when you had the two together. Lemon and Honeycomb Waffle with Caramelita Ice CreamThis was my favourite out of the three - it was quite sweet, but thats what waffles are meant to be like! Great combination of lemon and honeycomb on waffles, especially with the caramel ice cream. Honey dazzled on top. Loved the huge crunchy honeycomb bits.Although idealy we would have loved to sit and chat, there were way too many people waiting outside. This place offers decent waffles, but if you want to relax and enjoy your dessert slowly here - this is not the place! …Read More

The hype is crazy!
School Food
2014-01-23
We've heard that School Food will be a long wait so we decided to meet a little earlier for dinner. We got our ticket at 5:50pm for a 40-table wait! There were only around 15 tables inside.. In the end we managed to get seated 50mins later. We shared for mains and a mari between the four of us. Even though the portions weren't big, we were quite satisfied as the food was creamy and filling. There was +10% service charge at the end.Spam Mari II $62Nice little snack. I was surprised that the rice was quite warm. The spam was tasty and spiced, not like the normal spam you get. I couldn't taste the cheese though!  Carbonara Topokki $68I would have never thought of this combination! The topokki texture was soft but still chewy. Carbonara sauce itself was creamy and milky and of good standard. But even though this dish tasted very nice (100 points for creativity), you could probably try making this at home, especially considering that carbonara sauce isn't difficult to make! Pan Grilled Spam Bokkeumbap $82Again, the spam was awesome. Every spoonful was strong of seaweed - which is rare since most rice dishes sprinkled with seaweed only tastes of it with certain bites. Kimchi Risotto $92Again, nice but very simple - just a normal bowel of kimchi fried rice. It was very sweet. Street Toppoki with Melted Cheese $68The waiter warned us when we ordered this that it will be very spicy. As a person who can take spicy, I could barely take this. The sauce was very tomato-y, sweet and very very hot indeed! My friends and I had to eat this dish really really slowly, there were literally tears in our eyes. We saw that even the table next to ours couldn't finish their dish. But I guess we were warned, and other than that the sauce was actually really nice. …Read More

Big and Tasty
Paisano's Pizzeria
2014-01-20
I'm normally not a huge fan of pizzas, but this place deserves a thumbs up from me. One slice of their 24-inch pizza is just right for a meal - at an affordable price too! White Pizza ($45) - ricotta, fresh cream sauce, mozerella, parmesan Really, really tasty. Tasted very milky and creamy. For the cheese lovers out there, this is like a four-cheese pizza with milder and softer cheeses. Dough was soft and the creamy layer of cheese on top made the base nice and chewy. Godfather ($40) - onions, ham, italian sausage, pepperoni, pizza saucePizza sauce was too tomato-y and overpowering. Meat on it was nice but there wasn't much. …Read More

Cheap Ramen in Central
Yachiyo Ramen
2014-01-18
My friends and I came to Central to try another cafe, but since it was 1:30pm on a weekday most places were full. Since we didn't have to wait for a table here, ramen instead it was! There was free tea and a dish of seaweed for everyone. I ordered a bowel of Shoyu ramen. The soup was alright, but the soya sauce taste was too strong and over-powering. The pork tasted as if it had been seperately boiled. Noodles were cooked to a good texture - chewy but not too hard. There was also very little actual noodles - I didn't feel full afterwards (which is the case with most ramen places nowadays though). All in all, it wasn't REALLY bad, but I wouldn't have it again if I had a choice. Although not the best pot of noodles in the world though, it was a pretty cheap, especially considering the recent ramen-hype that have made most bowels of ramen over $100. Also considering this place being located in Central, $70 for ramen is not too bad! …Read More

Chicken Breast with Parma Ham in Butter Sauce
Simplylife Bakery Cafe
2013-08-15
The dish wasn't too big, if I didnt have soup with the meal I wouldn't have been filled properly. The chicken was salted evenly to core and the parma ham was very good at mimicking chicken skin. The buttery sauce was subtle, not too filling and went very well with the potatoes. Only negative thing I would say about the flavour was that there was thyme between the ham and chicken, which wasn't very evenly spread across, so there were bits of the chicken that had a very strong thyme flavour and other bits where there was none. The home-made tea was good. A little fruity and fresh. Overall seemed a little pricy. The environment was clean but very noisy - not a good place to sit and chat in. …Read More

Great Goose... Meh Everything Else
Chan Kan Kee Chiu Chow Restaurant
2013-08-15
The only thing that was good at this place was the lo sui goose   Goose with tofu: great - strong, very 'lo sui' flavour. Oyster Omlette: their oysters were big but had a 'smelly' taste.. Didn't taste fresh at all (un-fresh if anything). The dish tasted so bad we didn't even finish half of it.Oyster Congee: again, same thing with the oysters. I guess if you have the congee alone, its fine (as long as you pick out all the oysters).Soy sauce eel: eel tasted a little fishy, but generally fine for me. BUT this dish was really oily. Cheun jiu chicken: Again, way too oily…Read More

Great Snack
Mr. Bing
2013-08-15
Tried the Peking Duck Crepe here. I had the baby crepe - which was a good size as a snack or light lunch. The middle was crispy and crunchy even though the outside was soft - a very interesting texture. It could've been better with more duck, but had enough peking duck sauce in it. Overall, very nice!I was really surprised that the servers could only speak english. Also, the guy at the till couldn't even tell me how big a baby size was - he should know even if he's not the one making it! …Read More

Dinner after Boat Trip
Loaf On
2013-08-05
Tried this Michelin star restaurant after coming back from a boat trip. Fried Tofu: very soft and smooth, great soya taste.Fish Soup: almost creamy, the soup tasted fresh. You could taste the fish very well and perhaps due to the fish used, wasn't fishy.Razor Clam: was chopped up and stir-fried. It was very peppery but the sauce brought out the clam taste very well. Mantis Shrimp: great 'wok flavour'. Dry on the outside and still moist on the inside. They were quite big as well. The only thing I would say is about the waiters.. There was a waiter who was constantly playing with his phone in the corner and another one who tried to go up a very narrow staircase with a dish on her hand when I was coming down. …Read More

Relaxing Afternoon
Homei
2013-08-05
A friend brought me to this little gem, if not I wouldn't have found it. Pasta of the day was spaghetti carbonara. Even though it was a simple dish, it was really nice. I don't normally eat ham but this one didn't taste to smoked and added extra flavour to the dish. It looked a bit dry (as if there was no sauce), but a bite into it gave me a plesant - there was a strong creamy flavour. The spaghetti was al dente but still moist on the outside - perfect! The green apple soda I had with it was a little weird - tasted to peppermint-y and not apple-y. They let us stay for ages - it was a really nice environment to chat in and we did not feel rushed. In summary, I had an awesome, relaxing afternoon!…Read More

Alternatively...
David Ramen
2013-08-05
At first we were going to try a different ramen shop, but because the line for that one was too long, this was the alternative ramen we had. Theres a choice of three ramen soups - I had the concentrated pork bone soup. The soup tasted right, not too salty or filled with MSG. However, I still didn't find it that special - loads of ramen places seem to be doing the same soup nowadays. It was a bit pricey, especially considering that the ramen only came with one pork slice. I got seaweed to go with it as well, which I recommend since it soaked up the soup really well and still tasted really strong. The complementary drink was really weird. It tasted like tea and coffee mixed together. As a person who don't like coffee, I was really sensitive to the taste. …Read More

Authentic Thai Food
RA CHA MOO YANG
2013-08-05
I go on holiday to Thailand nearly every summer and I would definately say this place reminds me of my holidays! We had it take-away because we couldn't find a place to park the car but I wouldn't have minded eating there - there were tables set up outside the store along the pavement. The waitresses were really friendly and eager to help. Satay ($12 each): Had beef and chicken satay. Beef satay was good - not too tender, very beefy, great marinade. Chiken satay was also average. Green Curry Beef: Strong lemongrass flavour (a little different from the normal green curies I've had but quite good), moderately spicy. Only negative was that slices of beef were quite small (but if you have it with rice, its the curry that matters right?!).Fish Cake ($10): Again, strong lemongrass flavour, not spicy at all. I was slightly shocked that it was $10 for one but it was quite thick and tasted nice - I would have it again. …Read More
