Rushing to Class!
Das Gute
2010-10-17
Having to rush to class before 7, I quickly grabbed two of them on the way and quickly devoured one of them right before class , and ate the second one for breakfast next morning. Green Tea Bun with Red bean and Cream $15 for 2When I had the first one, my first impression of this pastry was nothing special and I thought it was overrated. However, I decided that I would try to really taste it, so I decided to slowly enjoy the second one. In the next morning, I first took a small bite first and realized the texture of the bread was still good, but like the first bun, the green tea flavor was still lacking. (Once you bite into the filling, you can no longer taste any green tea flavor at all. ) Then I took a second bite and got a taste of the cream and red bean, and I realized that the filling is what make this bread a . Both the cream and red bean are of high quality and they were not too sweet and also very light. It did not get stuck to the top of your mouth like the red bean paste from other local bakeries. Overall, I think that if the bread had more green tea taste to it, it would become one of my favorite, nonetheless, it was still a delicious choice for breakfast. Score: 8/10…Read More

Like the name of a well-known OR member: 唔食都知唔好食!
Super Sushi Shop
2010-10-08
I have always passed by this place when I go to Amoy Plaza and wondered if this place is a hidden gem in Kowloon Bay. So after going to the bank during my lunch break, I decided to give this place a try. After reading the review from a previous poster, I ordered the Sashimi Rice set with a Green Tea to go. As soon I saw the pre-packed sushi at the refrigerator, I started to feel a sense of regret for ordering the Sashimi Rice. I could tell the fish weren't even semi-fresh by the the colors of the fish. Nevertheless, I told myself that I shouldn't expect too much for a $30 lunch set. Got my food and headed back to my office. "Sashimi" RiceAs soon as I opened the bag, I was due for a surprise. The rice and the "sashimi" were placed separately as shown in the picture above and 80% of it was imitation crab meat. Aside from the mountain of imitation rice, there were some discolored tuna bits, two tiny pieces of salmon and a few unknown elements. At that moment, I suddenly recalled the name of a well-known OR member: 唔食都知唔好食. So I tried a piece of the tuna and I immediately thought I was chewing on a piece of pork, then I had the tiny piece of salmon bit and it tasted like nothing. Finally, I tried the imitation crab meat and realized that they were the best part of the whole set. I was thankful that 80% of the "sashimi" was composed of the imitation crab meat. 3/10"Green Tea"Attempting to washed away the taste of this so-called sashimi rice, I took a gulp of the "green tea". After a little bit of struggle, I swallowed it and the amount of sugar syrup in the ""green tea" was overwhelming. There was absolutely no flavor nor smell of green tea in this drink and I had no choice but to toss it out. Come on, how can you called this a green tea at all? 2/10Even though I knew the saying of 一分錢一分貨, but this meal has definitely captured the essence of it. Looks like I won't be returning this place anytime soon if not never. P.S. On the bright side, I did not get a stomach ache from this meal. Thank God!…Read More

A bit too oily but good service!
西貢真味越南小廚
2010-10-04
After a day of hiking with my friends, we settled down at this restaurant to have our dinner. The waitress of this restaurant were very friendly and they quickly greeted us. The restaurant is very small, but it still offers enough space for each party and it is quite comfortable. After settling down, we looked through the menu and ordered the following foods:烤豬頸肉 Roasted Pork Neck ($32)The meat had a tender texture and it came with a nice charcoal flavor, but the amount of oil in the meat was overwhelming for me and all I can say about this dish is "我接受唔到囉" (I can't accept it). 法式鮮茄牛坑腩金邊粉 French Tomato Beef Rice noodles ($32)The appearance of this noodle dish was quite appealing and my friend said it tasted quite good. Since I did not try it, so I am in no position to give additional comment.越南火車頭牛肉湯河粉 Rare Sliced Beef Phở ($40)The quality of this beef noodle was up to the standard, but the soup base can be improved. In comparison to the phở from phở house in the US, it is only adequate. 烤雞排撈檬 Roasted Chicken Bún ($34)After mixing the 魚露 on the table with the noodles, I have to admit that the quality of the noodle was quite good as it didn't stick together in chunks and the flavor of the 魚露 really complemented the noodles. However, it had the same issue with the 烤豬頸肉, the grill chicken was soaked in oil and it left a coat of oil in my mouth even after I left the restaurant. If I only had this dish today, I would have to give this place a 喊. As for the other 撈檬 that my friends ordered (雞絲札肉撈檬 and 春卷札肉撈檬),I was informed that they were quite tasty. 越式小食拼盆 Appetizer Platter ($60)This platter was a mixture of good and evil. The shell of the egg rolls were fried very well and the fresh vegetable within gave it a refreshing crunch. However, the chicken wings were the same as the roasted pork neck and the grill chicken. they were too oily and I could not taste the chicken at all; it was just a very oily piece of meat with bones. Even my friend who loves chicken wings said that they weren't up to standard. 越南蔗蝦 Grilled shrimp on sugar cane ($38)The fried shrimp paste was quite tender and along with the sauce, this was quite a delicious appetizer. 牛油果芒果軟殼蟹米紙卷 Mango Soft Shell Crab Spring Roll with Avocado ($48)The soft shell crab in this dish was fried with good timing and it wasn't too oily. The only downside was the mint leaf within, however, perhaps we were just not used to this kind of flavor. After removing the mint leaf, the taste of this appetizer improved quite a bit. Overall, this is a nice restaurant to relax in the summer heat and have a quick bite. The service was very good and I can see that the owner has put in a lot of effort into running this restaurant. I just hope that the quality of certain dishes mentioned will improve in the future.P.S. One word of advice, a glass of water for the guest would be highly appreciated. …Read More

Jika Udon
2010-09-27
Arrived at this place late (sorry) since I was working overtime and my other colleagues were already eating. I quickly scanned through the menu, picked the Mentaiko Udon and ordered. The udon arrived fairly quickly and before I knew it, few of my colleagues were already trying the mentaiko. Almost at the same moment, all of them said that the mentaiko was really salty. I didn't believe them at first, so I gave it a try and it felt like putting a full spoon of salt into my mouth. The amount of salt in this udon was beyond my expectation. This dish was disgusting and it successfully became the worst food I've had in Hong Kong. The only upside was that the udon was fairly chewy, but the whole dish was still absolutely gross. I think I could have bought the mentaiko from any supermarket to mix it with a pack of udon and it would taste much better. In addition, most of my colleague said their foods were average to below average. It seems like I won't be visiting this place again and please reduce the amount of sodium in your foods.…Read More

After reading about this place on Openrice, my friend and I picked this place to catch up. When we arrived the place, it was only half full and we quickly got a table. After scanning through the lunch sets, we ordered the chicken spaghetti and the tuna angel hair and we also upgraded the drinks to cappuccino. The chicken spaghetti arrived fairly quickly; the proportion was just right and the flavor was not bad at all. As for the tuna angel hair, the flavor was quite a disappointment; the tuna tasted like it came straight out from the can and the sauce did not complement the angle hair. Well, we came here for the coffee, not the foods. As for the cappuccinos, the arts were done beautifully and I was quite impressed. The amount of milk in the cappuccino was just right and the texture of the drink was very smooth. I'm not an expert coffee drinker but I did enjoy their drink better than the ones I had in the States. For service, I wasn't very happy about this place because the staffs here were fairly reserved and they didn't even utter a simple welcome or thank you. I think friendlier service would make this place much more popular. Nevertheless, it's a good place to study, catch up with friends or simply enjoy a cup of coffee. …Read More

We were planning to go to 時新, but it wasn't open that day. Poor 翠翠. Ended up going to an average Japanese place for lunch, then came back here for a 雞蛋仔.After a couple minutes of contemplating, we ordered a 粒粒朱古力雞蛋仔 and waited about 10 minutes for it. It was freshly made and the chocolate bit melted quite evenly. However, it wasn't as good as I expected because there wasn't as much chocolate as it should have and perhaps I expected too much. To be honest, it's difficult for me to decide whether this place deserve a or just a "ok," but I would have to give it a "ok" this time. Hopefully, their other 雞蛋仔 will surprise me next time. …Read More

Nice Surprise in TST
Ebeneezer's Kebabs & Pizzeria
2010-09-25
After visiting the science center with a group of friends, we decided to have our dinner here. I had no idea that there was a restaurant at that spot (right across of Kowloon Park), but luckily, one of my friend was quite familiar with the area and we got there pretty easily. Now on to the food, we ordered the Chicken Tikka Kebab, Donar (Lamb) Kebab, Fish Biryani with Salad, Roast Chicken with Chips, Supreme Pizza, and Greek Salad with Roast Lamb. Both kebabs were very delicious with the Donar Kebab (sorry, forgot to take picture) being the better choice. The Lamb kebab tasted better because the meat was much more juicy and it went very well with the whole dish. Nonetheless, good amount of meat in both kebabs and the sauce was very appetizing. The rice and the sauce of the Fish Briyani was very good and made me miss Indian foods, but the fish was nothing special due to the lack of flavor. As for the Supreme Pizza, just a simple thumb up. Like the Donar Kebab, the Greek Salad with Roast Lamb was surprisingly good and I enjoyed it very much, especially the cubes of cheese in there. As recommended by the waiter, the Roast Chicken with Chips was my favorite dish. The sauce, chicken and fries went very well together and the whole dish was gone in a few minutes. This one is a must-try.Finally, the environment is good for a fast food restaurant and the staffs here are quite friendly. However, if you don't speak English, it can be difficult for you to communicate with them. …Read More

4 times already, so good so far.
PAUL LAFAYET (K11購物藝術館)

Having tried this place four times already , I have to admit that their Creme Brulee is the best one I have had so far. The caramelized sugar is always done properly with the right timing and the texture of the content is smooth as silk and very creamy. The added vanilla also made this little dessert even better. Since there are plenty of praise for this dessert already, I'm going to end it here. Besides their signature dessert, I have tried their Dome Chocolate and Apple Crumble. The chocolate coating of the Dome Chocolate is smooth and not too sweet, just the way that it should be. The blueberry mousse is also excellent in both texture and taste. However, I have to agree to a previous comment that the chocolate and blueberry mousse don't really go together. Nevertheless, I can still see why other people really enjoy it.For the Apple Crumble, I got to say that it was a huge disappointment. The taste for this dish is decent. However, like the Creme Brulee, the inside of the Apple Crumble is cold, but sadly, this does not work for this dessert at all. If the inside is hot or even warm, I believe it would've tasted 10 times better. As for the environment, there is basically no place to sit inside the shop since there are only three seats and they are always occupied. The outside court of K11 would've been a nice place to enjoy their desserts, but the music that they play there is as annoying as it can be. If they would change it to a slower song, it would've been a good place for people to have a good conversation and to enjoy their desserts. …Read More
