Delicious and Huge!
Royal Dessert (South Wall Road)
2014-10-05
Came here with a friend after we decided to walk off our dinner, I don't know how we thought we could fit in dessert! The space is quite big and the wait was short, there seemed a good number of people inside to show it was tasty and the man at the door was very friendly when I tried my best cantonese with him! We sat towards the back and there were already menu's on the table, there was more than enough English on the menu which was really handy as I can't read much more than dai pai dong menus! There was also heaps of pictures which all looked so delicious that it made choosing even harder! There was a girl sitting near us with the green tea and red bean sundae thing that looked about the size of her head! If I wasnt so full I would have chosen it! It looked so good and huge for the price! I'll be back for that! This time we felt like something light so we got a nut soup and the watermelon, coconut and beads dish. The nut dish we ordered with egg whites as it tastes better and is a bit better for you in my eyes! They came out and I was so eager to try that I forgot to take pictures altogether but they were very very good! The watermelon didnt look exactly like the picture but had so many pearls, chewy black pearls, popping juicy mini ones and medium sago! All soaked in refreshing creamy coconut milk and topped with sweet vanilla icecream! This was really good value! We could have happily just gotten this to share, it was so big we didnt even finish it. The nut soup was warm and calming, it's something I normally get in winter but I was craving it, it wasnt very strong in flavour but I enjoyed the lack of sweetness compared to the super sweet watermelon dish. It was constant and smooth, it looked silky and had a nice shine. I will definately come back for this again!!Do I reccommed it? From my experience yes!…Read More

Happy Hour at The Dutch
The Dutch Cheese and More
2014-06-17
My friend and I are avid cheese and winers and I'd been itching to try this place for quite some time! It looked good and I'd had some samples of their cheese so I knew it was delicious! While wandering past we decided to get the happy hour platter and just enjoy! Happy Hour Platter (for 2) - We were invited in to sample the cheeses and pick 2 or three varieties which we liked! After testing almost every cheese we settled on the truffle, aged and smoked! Truffle cheese - this was beautiful, my friend isn't a big fan of young cheeses but the flavour was so delicate and just perfect it was refreshing and incredible! If I ever feel like indulging this would be the perfect cheese toastie cheese! Smoked cheese - this one tasted like smoked ham which delighted the senses when dipped in the honey mustard on the board, creamy and lovely! Very good if you like a smokey flavour! Aged - I can't remember which aged this was but it was nice! It had a cheesey flavour without being overpowering, I quite liked it! The platter also came with two wines, we got a light white wine to complement our young cheeses and it was really really good! This is something I would definitely come back for as it's so easy to lose track of time and get lost in this little shop picking away at cheese, sipping wine and just unwinding after the day and all for only 120!! If you're tempted just take the plunge! Would I recommend? I think I'll have to be careful or I'll end up a regular!!…Read More

Best Burgers in HK
High Street Grill
2014-06-17
Came on a Sunday lunch and the place was pretty busy, there was about 10 of us though so we waited a little bit till they could get a big enough table for us all! Very attentive staff! If you haven't been the menu at HSG is delicious and everything looks good! And when I say everything I mean EVERYTHING! My friend and I couldn't decide between a burger and a salad so we split one or each! Got the moo cha cha burger and the quinoa, pumpkin and mozzarella salad! I also got a pint of hoegarden which came out really promptly so snaps for that! The salad - the salad was good, fresh and light, a great summer option! I feel like there could have been more mozerella though, but the serving was a good size and I'd happily get one as a lunch on it's own! Lots of spinach! The burger - oh my lord this burger was heaven! We asked for it medium and it came out medium rare so just be careful with that but boy was it good! A giant platter board of salad, chips and a burger even our guy friends struggled to fit in their mouths it had a juicy patty, salad, an egg and jalapeños! On the side was the guac, sour cream and salsa.. The guac was closer to avocado dip but still so good! Honestly the best burger I have had in HK and possibly even abroad, with burgers like this only one suburb over I really wouldn't bother making them!!Some of our other friends got the other burgers which looked just as tantalising!! I'm going to try the chicken one next!! And for vegetarians and the like they have a veggie burger too!! Would I recommend? I'll be back with whoever will come!…Read More

Cheap and Tasty
NINOEN Japanese Take-Away Shop
2014-06-17
On a Saturday afternoon I felt like something substantial as I hadn't had breakfast or lunch! When a friend suggested sushi I was sold so I wandered down to Ninoen. I've been wanting to try the rice boxes for a while and I figured this was the perfect chance.I was handed a paper menu which was a little aloof, pretty much telling me the meat but not sauce so I went with the safety of the grilled chicken with vegetables, which came with miso soup and for 15-20 I added some assorted sashimi Miso (with rice box) - this was good! Though a little salty for my taste it was still really yummy! And the serving was quite decent! Grilled Chicken w/ Vegetables & Rice $35-40 - these range in price but this one was on the cheap end so I was really surprised to see a huge chicken fillet lightly coated in a sesame, soy and honey sauce! It was brilliant! It laid on a bed of rice and there were some steamed vegetables and an egg on the side! The veggies were in a cream sauce but they were okay, veggies are always welcome! The taste of the chicken was really quite nice! It tasted fresh and I was quite impressed with it! Assorted sashimi $15-20 - I added this to my set box, I was expecting a little sashimi salad with some seaweed and salmon bits but this was good! There was 2 big slices of salmon, two slices of white fish and one prawn, as well as the seaweed salad! Definitely worth it! The sashimi was fresh and varied! Overall I liked this place and I will be back! There's two around the corner from each other so I'll have to try the other to see if they are the same haha! Would I recommend? Yeah for sure! …Read More

Burger Heaven
BRICK LANE
2014-06-11
Came here on a Friday afternoon at around 2 on a Friday afternoon and the place was sleepy and quiet! I'd been here for breakfast before but never tried their lunch menus. I'd seen the fish & chips look amazing though and I'll definately be back for them another day! Today however my friend and I decided to share, we decided on the beef burger and the mozzerella & tomato salad!Mozzerella & Tomato Salad - This was so good! I miss mozzerella and bocconcini so much here in HK and was expecting this to be a small serve due to this but it wasnt/ there were 8 thick slickes of tomato topped with thick white creamy circles of mozzerella and drizzled with oil and herbs! Honestly I would go back just for this! It was great and really light! Perfect for the scorching summer days coming up!Beef Burger - This was so good! I would happily have eaten the whole thing without a backward glance! We ordered it medium rare, the meat was still a little pink and juicy but it was cooked and had a nice crisp outside! There was a good amount of salad and the pickle was delicious. I normally feel burgers in HK lacking in something, be it sauce or salt or general juiciness this was not on of those times! I ended with juice all over my hands and a huge smile on my face. Just the way a burger should leave you! Oh there was also a size salad and chips which were just as good!…Read More

Happy Hour
WTF Spanish Restaurant & Bar
2014-06-11
Came here for happy hour! At around 5.30, the place was empty. The drinks are 2 for 1 during happy hour so we decided to just relax and have a drink! Decided on our drinks and also got the tomato bread.. Tomato Bread $45 - The bread was so good, 6 thick slices of warm sourdough on a trendy wooden paddle board. The bread was rubbed in some kind of butter or oil then topped with crushed tomatoes. The tomatoes were flavoursome and the bread really hit the spot after the first drink of our happy hour was done. I'd be happy to go back just for these! The margharita $75 - Quite good! There was enough salt to last the way through the drink and the presentation was really nice! The flavour of the lime came through and you could taste the presence of alcohol without being overwhelmed by it! Because it was happy our we got to have 2 of these for the price of one!Maclellentini $75 - This bad boy was worth every penny! I'd pay full price for it! Sometimes you want a girly drink AND whiskey and it's hard to choose. Look no more! The flavour was sweet from the apple juice, the red colour was beautiful to look at and the maclellan shone through strong without overpowering the drink as a whole. I could drink these for the rest of my life!Would I recommend it? Why yes I would!…Read More

Delicious!
Little Burro
2014-06-11
This newly opened little burro is a gem! I am so happy that it's finally opened around the corner from my place! I'd already been to the one in Causeway so I was prepared for the price and size of the food.. I went with a friend so we split a burrito and some cornchips with guac! The space is quite big so it'd be good to have a few people here! Their liqor licence is still processing so be aware there isnt any of those delicious mexican beers at this location yet! The tables weren't set out in the best way and they made the space look cluttered and messy, everything was quite clean just not ordered.. I liked the music although my friend said it didnt match the vibe, we disagreed on this. Now to the food!Burrito $75 - We got ours with chipotle chicken, beans with bacon, cilantro lime rice and the mild salsa and cut in half. The size of these things is quite decent! Though when ravenous I can eat a whole one, just the half is definately enough. The flavour was quite good! The chipotle was nicely spicy and they didnt skimp on any of the toppings which makes it worth it! I normally get the pulled pork so it was nice having the chicken. There was lots of flavour and a good amount of salad, there was enough rice to make it substantial but also not so much that it felt like a filler. Corn Chips & Guacamole $38 - The corn chips came out in three vibrant colours which really caught my eye, they all tasted the same but they were so much more fun to eat! The chips were lightly salted which was perfect, it let the flavour of the guac shine through! The guac sadly wasnt punchy enough for me, maybe it needed a bit of salt or some tabasco but normally I like it with a little more kick.. it was a bit more like avocado dip than guacamole. My friend also suggested that maybe there wasnt enough lime. Though it was delicious and we promptly finished it. If it came with more corn chips I'd probably get it more often though I'll try the salsa next time..  All in all I know for sure I'll be back and I'll definately be bringing more friends!…Read More

Cakes are back and look even better
Heirloom Eatery & More
2014-05-08
Around 5.30 today I wandered down my street and saw that Heirloom was having a soft opening.. their cake display has grown with a much better selection than before.. and at better prices! The staff seem pretty new and generally pretty nice. Seeing so many new options and feeling like I wanted lemon meringue I found a few things caught my attention..Cinnamon Swirl Bun $25 - This looked irresistable and for only 25 I wasn't going to pass it up! The bun was soft and fluffy but still dense enough, there was good flavour of cinnamon and to my surprise walnuts added a good texture balance. There was even cream cheese frosting! All in all I was super happy with this and will be back for it often!Lemon Slice $35 - The lemon slice was surprisingly good.. I'm a bit picky when it comes to lemon things, they can easily be too sweet or too tart, but this was just right. I also really liked that it didnt feel gritty but creamy and soft. My only complaint with it was that at times cracking the base was a little too difficult, but all in all very worth it I don't see why it's not priced at 25 like the other smaller items though, but I'd happily pay the extra 10..Hot Chocolate $35 - This was thoroughly dissapointing, not because it was a bad hot chocolate, I would be quite happy with it in other circumstances however I asked for it to be super chocolatey only to get home and find that it was a good centimetre or two away from even touching the top of the cup and only an average level of chocolateyness could be found.. Oh well, these are things that wouldn't be a problem if I'd eaten in, as no one would serve a mug that low when eating in.. ah the perils.. All in all it wasn't a bad visit, I could easily share the sweets between two or even three and they were of very high quality allowing me to be content with saving some for later and not being so sweet to make you sick. Perfect. If you haven't been since the new open there is also a new menu and a few other changes. Would I recommend it? So far yes, but I'd like to see how the new sandwhiches are.. I loved the old ones to death!…Read More

Baab Korean Casual Dining
2014-05-04
Came in on a rainy Sunday night and were quickly seated, there was a lot of space so it was pretty easy and quiet. We looked at the menus (english) and ordered as hot tea was served. The food came out about 15 minutes later and the service was pretty good (we spilt hot tea everywhere a few times and they quickly brought cloths and towels to clean it up for us)Chicken Claypot with Tofu - This was delicious, I'm not normally a tofu person but I know its something I should be eating. It was my first experience having this kind of dish so I had no idea what to do with it, luckily my friend told me that I had to mix it, properly and fast otherwise the bowl would cook my rice in cakes.. to which some of it did and I thought it was still yummy! I'm not sure if it tasted traditional but it did taste good, not too salty and generally a decent amount of chicken. …Read More

Meaty Kebab
27 Kebab House Turkish Restaurant (荷李活道)
2014-05-04
Everyone loves a good kebab. Unfortunately, quick, no nonsense food is a little hard to find it Hong Kong as I feel like snacks or meals all come in at least 40. I first tried 27 Kebabs a while ago and have been back 3 times since. This was my second time at the Hollywood Road one, the other was the Sheung Wan branch (just opened) near me. Mixed gyros $60 - Flat bread, check. Loads of assorted meat, check. Tomato, check. Lettuce, check. Sauce, check. All the ingredients were there (I requested mine without onion) and you got the option of spicy sauce or not, take the leap and get the spicy sauce, it just adds something good. Kebabs are something HK doesnt get quite right and I often feel ripped off (read: ebeneezzers) but this is good, fast and tasty. I really enjoy it and I'll keep going! Also I don't understand why the place has been given a pricing of 101-150 it's easily in the 41-100 range!…Read More

Heaven!
Grassroots Pantry
2014-05-04
I found Grassroots at the PMQ night market and I thank my lucky stars I did! We walked around as you do at markets to scope out all the food and come back to the one we really wanted. The guy at this stall was amazing, so friendly, immediately talking to us, we got the card he explained to us that everything is 'guilt free' (though with something tasting as good as it did I couldnt help it) they were vegetarian and looked incredible! I decided no matter what I wanted to come back and try something! Chocolate Peanut Butter Cupcake - Oh. My. God. My friends were quite curious as to how something could taste good if there wasnt sugar and preservatives and all the things we are so used to in our food, but one bite in and I couldnt hide it on my face, it was delicious. As a cupcake devourer I found I am often quite skeptical as they can look so moist on the shelf but in my mouth they are dry and tasteless. I cannot stress enough that this is NOT the case! I pull the top off my muffins to provide an easier eating experience and usually the cup part is drier, however the delicious fondant was melting in my hands before I could touch the bottom and my god it was incredible, rich and chocolatey but not too sweet. I (reluctantly) gave my friends a try and they both couldnt speak for a minute till then there was 'but how do they do it without sugar?' and 'it's like it tastes better without it'. When I finally got to the bottom part of the cupcake I was surprised to find a moist, sweet, mousse/cream filled cake. Honestly it was incredible! I will happily marry the man who made these!Would I recommend it? I have absolutely no doubt that I would recommend it to ANYONE!…Read More

Delicious Pho
Pho' 26
2014-05-03
Coming from Melbourne I have serious laksa cravings however as I know the standard of Hong Kong laksa I often end up getting pho!I live in Sheung wan and almost right between pho 1 and pho' 26.. It's an eternal struggle but pho' 26 generally wins, and with good reason! Today I got Lemongrass Pork Chop Pho and it was delicious! The pork chop came out separate which was great! It was not too much meat but enough! The broth however takes the cake here! The pho comes with bean sprouts and basil in it so you dont really need to add the chilli if you don't want! Same goes for the limes. The noodles were soft and slurpy which is an issue lots of people have but I honestly don't mind them like that! I love being able to slup the long rice noodles! The service is good, once they see you need something they are attentive and the food is cheap! At 41 dollars I'd take this pho over a fair few other HK places! Would I recommend it? Heck yes! Already have!!…Read More

Chocolate Cake
Java Java Coffee and Tea Lounge
2014-04-27
I was feeling like cake and as my normal go-to 'heirloom' is closed for renovations I had to find a new place, being just around the corner Java Java seemed a good choice! I walked in and as I was craving thick, muddy chocolate cake I saw they had one piece left and quickly ordered it then went and sat outside! The weather was beautiful and sunny so sitting out the front reading while slowly eating my cake was just perfect, there were little flowers on the table and watching the people walk by was nice.. The mood is perfect, no rushing, no stress!Chocolate cake $36 - When I first bit into the cake it was really nice, chocolatey but not sickening and not too sweet. The cake was moist but not too dense, and the piece was the perfect size for one.. It had little chocolate balls on the top which were really good to contrast the texture of the fudgey icing to the lightly spongy cake! All in all I was really happy and think if I'm getting cake for one this is a far better option!! Would I recommend it? Yes! I'd like to come back and try the rest of the things on the menu too!!…Read More

Delicious and huge!
Ho Hak Shan Tung
2014-04-09
On a dreadfully rainy day in Sheung Wan I was meeting with some friends for lunch and felt overwhelmingly that I needed dumpling noodle soup! I had been itching to give this place a try since I first found it and I am oh so happy that I finally did! The menu is bilingual and extensive. As I was with 3 friends we ordered a meal each and 2 extra plates of dumplings!Noodles with Pork mince in spicy sauce - This was a spicy soup noodle with mince and what appeared to be shallots! Super yummy! The noodles were not too thin or too thick and tasty! The soup was spicy but not overwhelmingly so, it packed a tasty bite that made me want more but not so hot I wanted to stop eating itNoodles with beef and spring onions - Fried noodles were delicious! There was a fairly decent amount of meat which is rare! But they also tasted really good! The noodles were a little but chewy still and perfectly done! The sauce was good for basic noodes!Dumplings - We got the celery and the chives, these are filling but so tasty! A little bit soupy on the inside and so fresh! Delicious! I could just eat a plate of these!!With everything on the menu coming in at around 40 dollars it was a super cheap meal and left 3 grown men saying how full they were, trying to convinve the other one to eat the last dumplings!Would I recommend it? Hell yes! I'd be happy to go every day of the week!…Read More

An enjoyable experience!
Habibi Café
2014-03-30
I was on my way up to Mana! but saw this place and figured I should give it a try, it looked closer to my price range and the decor was great! My friend and I sat down and decided a on a salad, a dip and a hot mezze.. We wanted the variety and didn't want anything too heavy! We ended up going with;Babaganoush - not the stuff I'm used to (I grew up in a heavily ethnic community south of Sydney) but not bad by all means, the eggplant wasn't overly strong and it didn't have the deep rich purple I'm so accustomed to, however the flavour was quite good! I'd still get it again! It came with two toasted flat pide pocket breads, they were lightly toasted and didn't have much colour but were warm and soft which cooked and went crunchy like chips! Beetroot salad - this was actually quite good! A decent amount of beetroot (it was the star of the show), lentils, chunks of onion and bits of lettuce weaved in there too! There was some zucchini as well but it was a little lost in the assortment. My only issue with this dish was that I needed to put salt on it to enhance the flavours a bit and give it that added depth.. This would have been good done by the staff with fresh ground salt! But I know some people don't like the amount of salt I do! Lamb pie - this was much more of a filo than a pie but still alright, not my favourite but my friend LOVED the sauce it came with and the filo was cooked perfectly so it's not that it was bad it just didn't really wow me.. Overall I quite liked it and I'd go back, for the price the food is super reasonable, shareable and quite tasty! Plus the atmosphere is really good, the place has been decorated really well and I can imagine if it was packed it'd be such a great vibe! My only issue would be how cold it was in there, which REALLY isn't an issue! Would I recommend it? Yeah, I'm sure it's not the best but it's reasonable and cheap.. …Read More
