Shang Palace, a well known traditional high end cantonese restaurant, which earned 2 stars michelin rating for years. But maybe few people known for their weekend early bird HKD 200 lunch set.

Locates in the basement of Kowloon Shangari hotel at TST, the decoration is certainly traditional with use of lots of red color, but very comfortable. You will instantly feel you are in a high end restaurant. The table setting is also very chinese traditional. By the way, there is one way to make a chinese fine dinning experience just slightly less expensive, which is to skip all the snacks and hot sauces that waiter will automatically put on the table. It is a norm they will charge you 30 - 50 HKD per plate for those thing that we never eat. They will be glad to take those away.

The early bird lunch set operates at 10am to 12pm that you must return the table before 12pm. The set includes 4 items of dim sum (choice of 8), 燒味雙拚barbecued meat combo, sauteed seasonal vegetable 清炒時蔬, braised e-fu noodles with wild mushrooms 野菌炆伊麵, and one choice of chinese dessert.

The 4 dim sum we picked are steamed shrimp dumpling 蝦餃, steamed minced pork dumpling with truffle paste 黑松露燒賣, baked barbecued pork bun 菠蘿叉燒包, and deep fried shrimp dumplings with crab roe and wasabi 蟹籽芥未鮮蝦角.

蝦餃, big and fresh shrimp with thin dumpling skin. Quite good but I have taste better in other restaurant.

黑松露燒賣, size quite big as well. The black truffle sauce provides a different aroma towards the pork dumpling, I would say better than the shrimp dumpling.

菠蘿叉燒包, so good, period. Very soft and perfect blend of sweetness with the barbecue pork inside.

蟹籽芥未鮮蝦角, cruncky skin stuffed with shrimp with wasabi paste, quite good.

燒味雙拚, very crispy roasted duck and chicken. Very high quality.

清炒時蔬 (菠菜), seasonal spinach and it is so tendered. One of the very fine ones. I suspect they only pick the very early babe spinach 幼苗. Very delicious.

野菌炆伊麵, this dish is quite difficult to pull off as any slight miss judge of amount of oil or over stired will turn into diaster. Shang Palace has pulled this off perfectly.

杏仁茶湯丸, not too sweet and matches well with the sweet sticky rice dumpling. The dumpling rice skin is perfect.

Overall, you may feel the menu is simple and the food is quite ordinary. However, the portion is just right along with the top notch ingredient that shows the true calebre of the chef and kitchen. Considering only HKD 250 per head (with service charge and chinese tea), you are enjoying a true high quality of dim sum lunch along with great service and enviorment, I can say it is a bargin and definitely earns my high recommendation!
