The Island Burger

Prime Australian beef, crispy bacon (changed to chicken), Monterey Jack cheese, semi-dried tomato, caramelised onion, lettuce, chili mayo, butter toasted bun

Was quite surprised to see French fries and salad on the side. The French fries were freshly deep-fried and were thin and pretty delicious. The salad was very fresh. The burger itself was pretty good, no wonder their signature. The beef was very juicy and delicious. It was not dry at all with the Monterey Jack cheese. I didn't realize it had chili mayo until I found it a little bit spicy (really just a little bit) which was so appetising. The toasted bun was done very well with crispy thin crust and soft interior obviously layered by butter. Quite a good burger indeed. They also served a very small pot of new ketchup and mustard on the side. One point worth mentioning was that they were quite considerate in helping to change the crispy bacon to chicken breasts for us. They even double checked with us whether we could eat semi-dried tomato because my lunch partner was allergic to processed food, which was really appreciated.

Raspberry Mille feuilles

Layers of caramelised puff pastry with whipped vanilla cream and fresh raspberries

Seemed to be one of their signature cakes. There were not too many choices in their cake counter, definitely a lot fewer than those at Island Gourmet. It was a bit disappointing though. It was still crispy but I was sure I had way better Mille feuilles elsewhere (actually Crostini when we ordered a whole Mille feuilles). I think the Mille feuilles tasted like they had absorbed quite some moisture from elsewhere. Yet it did smell good, especially the vanilla cream. The fresh raspberries were quite tasty. Definitely not so greasy after finishing half (I shared it with my lunch partner).

Original & Raisin Scones with Jam & Clotted Cream

Scones were our all-time-favourite. However, they were so disappointing. We asked them to reheat them before serving as we placed our orders. When they were first served to us, they were cold. Then we asked them to reheat them again. When they brought the scones to us again, they were actually just slightly warm. How could they taste good being served like this? Really not so good. We also asked for 1 more pot of clotted cream giving away the jam and we had to ask for the second time to get the clotted cream. Service-wise for serving the scones, our experiences at Island Gourmet were really much much better.

Food was mostly the same with the same price, services at Island Gourmet were definitely better. That said, the seating was much more comfortable here with someone playing live music to you, high ceilings and big windows. You also got to watch servers dressed in their Chinese national qipao running around. Maybe where you want to go really depends on what you want.
