Featured Review

continue reading

continue reading

Glorious Choux! Featured Review

I love French pastries. Delicate and perfect in every way. How did the French come up with so many wonderful delicious sweet treats?Choux craquelin is one my most  favorite among them all. Created by versatile choux pastry (the same pastry that is used for cream puffs and eclairs), it's a crunchy crispy pastry filled with delightful cream. A long while ago, Hong Kong had one place that specialized in choux craquelin. For whatever reason, it closed down and I was without this wonderful delight in Hong Kong. Going to France was way too far and the great little place in Tokyo was not always convenient for a quick fix. That was until I found this place.Owl's Choux. Gelato.Coffee. Listed in this year's Michelin guide under street eats, I swear, I've walked by this place numerous times but I didn't bother to go in because I didn't want to be disappointed by a soggy chewy choux. But the Michelin guide recommended it? Thus, my curiosity peaked and I had to go give it a try.Located right next to K11, it's a corner shop. It has limited indoor seating so mostly geared for take away. Decorated super cute with little owls every where.Menu is in English and Chinese. They offer something called a mega choux which is a huge choux stuffed with gelato. They also offer drinks. They offer small chougettes. You can add it onto a scoop of gelato as well. And that's what I did.One scoop of gelato ($38) with a chougette ($10). They have a varied selection of gelato. I chose Earl Gray. Chougettes are filled with salted caramel sauce and topped with sea salt. Cute as a button, right? But what did it taste like? The gelato was wonderful. Smooth and creamy. There was a delicate fragrant flavor of Earl Gray. Topped with a crispy mini cream puff, it was filled with a lovely salty caramel cream sauce. It had a light hint of salt to propel the sweet caramel taste. Exactly why salty caramel is my favorite go to flavor. But I here for choux craquelin. I was about to order a mega choux when I saw this offer. $18 for a small one. Now, a small one is always the true test of how good the choux is. And for $18, not expensive at all. They have four flavors but at the time when I was there, they only had salted caramel and custard. As I tried the salted caramel already, I went with custard.Beautiful isn't it? The staff fill it with cream upon ordering to maintain the crispy shell. All choux are baked in house as I saw them making more while I was eating. The pastry was crispy. The filling was a wonderful custard with a light vanilla taste. It complimented well with the crunchy shell. This was probably one of the best choux in Hong Kong. No wonder the Michelin guide recommended it.Inexpensive snack break that tastes wonderful. The staff was friendly and took the time to chat with their customers. All in such a convenient location, I will definitely be back when I need a choux fix. continue reading

I have heard of this name long time ago and I have finally got the time to try it out. It's on Mody Road, literally at the corner opposite to K11. The shop is quite cozy but they do have like 4 seats for customers to dine it. Without a doubt, the small shop specialises in choux, choux sandwiches, and we have also found that they are currently having promotions offering an original crispy choux cream for just $18!!!! I have chosen a slightly upgraded salted caramel one for only $22!!! What a great deal when you don't wanna have their bigger Mega Gelato Choux. There is a display of their gelato with 8 different flavours, next to it, we can see a display of different choux, as well as the mini chouguettes that you can add on top of your gelato. We were told that almost everything including the flour are imported from France, therefore, they are not as sweet and texture is different from Hong Kong style pastry. Salted Caramel Choux $22The perfectly round shaped choux is topped with some pearl sugar, which is a traditional French way to make their choux or chouquettes. It's extremely crispy and crumbly on the outside with just a light sweetness because pearl sugar is actually not very sweet. Once you bite into it, you can feel that the cream is super fresh and it is squeezed in from the bottom. It's almost dripping but it is actually not. It's just really really smooth, soft and somewhat light. There is a mix of fresh cream as well as some light salted caramel sauce, super indulging but finger licking delicious. It's not a heavy dessert and I think I can easily have a couple of these. p.s. you do have to be careful though and I highly recommend you to eat it with the paper bag cus the crumbs are going make it very messy2 Scoops of handcrafted gelato $58 + a mini chouquette with salted caramel sauce $10Among those 8 flavours I have picked 2 of the most uncommon flavours - Japanese condensed milk & caramel ginger breadThe ginger bread gelato is on top which is surprisingly not sweet despite the fact that there is caramel in it! You can also find bits of ginger in the gelato, like literally! It really reminded me of Christmas again and I just do not want this to end. The condensed milk is a bit milkier with just the right amount of sweetness even though it is made of condensed milk. It is in pure white colour but it doesn't mean that it is tasteless. Instead, it has a subtle unique taste that is simply irresistible. Lastly, I almost forgot that the chouquette is caramel filled. The sweetness of the filling was probably the sweetest among all. The caramel filling is sticky and thick, there is just a drizzle of it but it's more than enough already. There are not many choux places in Hong Kong except that particular chain store in many MTR station. Which makes Owl's Choux easily the best choux shop in Hong Kong. Their choux is no doubt good and delicious however it's a little bit overpriced to me, thanks to the freaking high rent in Hong Kong!  continue reading

Rainy night, I was in Tsim Sha Tsui and met Owl's at the corner! The decorations and the poster of the food are attractive especially the handcrafted gelato ~ Owl's so I came in finally~Lovely owlsHere was what I ordered :-The first one I ordered is this signature 'Choux' (HKD58) here in this shop.Which named "Mango Tango", is a most elegant puff pastry and a kind of puffs.Mango Tango Choux - With handcrafted gelato - mango sorbet changed t o bloody sorbet ... HK$ 58Looks like a pineapple buns but in orange colour. The top with some cookies and make it crunchy!Orange coloured Choux is very crispy, with mango sorbet, mango and passionfruit sauce, some coconut crumbs inside. But I changed mango sorbet to bloody orange sorbet as I like it a bit more sour and taste is quite fresh. Also made me eat more while already have a high meal(dinner) before that.It really pretty good taste and I love it very much~ highly recommended!I also ordered a very traditional puff pastry called "chouquettes"(HKD35)as advised by the staff, this now is very popular in France.Chouquettes - A kind of puffs and crispy HK$ 35There's some pearl sugar on the top of it.It perfectly with caramel sauce and would make it more tasty and delicious! Smell great and crispy too! continue reading
