[ Jiangsu & Zhejiang 江浙滬| 銅鑼灣 ]I was in the mood for Chinese food and decided upon this long established restaurant serving Shanghai food in Jardine’s Bazaar, a street with many Chinese (namely Shanghai) cuisine. The restaurant is quite large and the table setting is quite traditional. I enjoyed the ambience as it felt comfortable but —— —— 上海燻魚Shanghai Smoked fish $78 First time trying this appetiser and I absolutely love it. Easily ate the entire bowl! On contrary to the name, the fish is actually fried so the outside is crunchy. The inside is not soft but firm and flaky which I thoroughly enjoyed. There are a few bones but nothing too small to be a hazard. The best part of this was the vinegary sauce that’s simultaneously savoury and sweet. I proudly mopped up the leftover sauce with the mantou. The fish itself is also well marinated and has a lot of flavour. There were five big-ish pieces which is quite reasonable for the price. Mung Bean noodles with shredded chicken $58 This other cold appetiser again blew my mind. You can tell the mung bean noodles are hand made as it varies in widths and lengths. Thus, it is bouncy and chewy but oh so soft and slippery. They perfectly adhere to the savoury sauce that’s strong in sesame and peanut taste but it has a richness to it as if the peanuts were toasted. The cucumbers too have been treated and lightly pickled to remove excess water and impart more flavour. The chicken is tender and soft and eating everything together was a delicious bite that made me hungry for more. A good portion between two. Wok fried string beans with minced pork $76 Very good wok-hei: the beans are all charred and kissed by the flame without being burnt. They have a shine on them without being greasy. Loved eating it with the savoury and chewy pork. Perfect when I stuffed them in the mantou as the mince is a bit salty (the good kind though) —— —— 秘製咕嚕肉 Sweet and sour pork $108 Very big pieces of pork, all fried to perfection then coated with a sweet and tart sauce that doesn’t make you thirsty. Unfortunately there was one piece that was all tendon/fat which I could not bite through. I did however enjoy the genius amount of crunchy sweet onions and peppers as well as ultra sweet tomatoes which you don’t normally find in this dish. The handle on the sauce is well done as the plate wasn’t dripping with sauce, there was just enough to coat every piece and perhaps dip the mantou in. Steamed/ deep fried Shanghai bun $48The best accompaniment in a shanghai feast. The fried mantou are simply perfect with condensed milk. Crunchy and crisp with the softest pillow-like interior. Frying them also imparts a toasty-richness that the steamed one lacks. On the other hand, the plain steamed buns are soft and fluffy throughout and I particularly enjoyed having them with the plethora of sauces present in this meal as it perfectly soaks up the sauces. It can also be eaten plain as it has a slight sweetness and that distinct bread-ness which is delicious. —— —— 推介 🙆🏻♀️💬 Overall, a very pleasant dinner here eating authentic Shanghai dishes, served by Shanghainese staff who only spoke mandarin. A nice way to practise my Chinese 😂 🗓 Revisit? ✅ ⭕️/ ❎
