continue reading

We ate here to celebrate our anniversary! We mentioned the special occasion in our booking and the owner (Joe?) contacted us beforehand to ask for our names so he could put together a celebratory dessert plate (pictured)! He also came out to say hello and congratulate us during our dessert and he was so lovely. There were two options of menu - one with teapot soup, and one with hotpot. We both chose the 8-course menu without hotpot and it was delicious: we had hokkaido tomato, a tofu/sesame/miso plate, 'sushi' with green bean paper, aubergine, red pepper, and cherry blossom leaf, tempura (the sweetcorn tempura was perhaps the most delicious mouthful of the meal!), teapot soup with seaweed parcel, thick tofu skin and green herb gluten, lime noodles, and mochi. We had green tea throughout, and also ordered kirin. We were full after the menu so the portions were well considered, but as it was all quite healthy and fresh we felt happy and satisfied rather than overfull. The restaurant was clean and well presented, and our waitress was lovely (and also spoke good english). Thank you so much Isoya for making our evening memorable and special  We would highly recommend this place to any vegetarians and/or lovers of Japanese food! continue reading

Our group of four had dinner here. There are two types of set menu - one is 8 courses, and the other is 6 courses + hotpot. We chose two of each among the four of us.The service is excellent, the staff and manager really took their time to explain what each course is and how to eat it (if there were condiments). I didn’t photograph all the courses we had, but we enjoyed everything. The portion sizes were perfect. I would definitely come here again! Our meal started with two cold appetisers, comprised on a beautifully cut Japanese tomato (no dressing or seasoning, allowing us to enjoy the natural taste of the tomato). The other appetiser had cucumber (served with two types of bean paste, one sweet and one salty), a nicely steamed eggplant with a sesame condiment and cold bean curd.We then had the sushi appetiser. There were four pieces which were cleverly made to mimic regular sushi : “tuna” made with roasted capsicum, grilled eggplant, and two sushi rice wrapped in a Sakura leaf and green bean paper . We all enjoyed this one especially. We had a soup which was made with winter melon and served in tiny teapots and served in tiny tea cups. This was refreshing. The fried bean curd was accompanied by a skewered piece of gluten - it reminded me of the traditional Chinese pudding made during Lunar new year. Both were light and tasty. The hot pot was a choice of either tomato or soy milk based soup. We chose tomato. The cooker was brought to the table and heated up in front of us. There was a vast array of vegetables and, together with the broth, was hearty and filling. The dessert was a warabi mochi accompanied by either peach sherbert or coffee “ice cream”. I chose the coffee and it was delicious. continue reading
