We were blown away!! Right from the moment you enter you can’t help but notice the amount of hard work that has gone in from decor to the ambience and definitely the food! And its all about the small details! Its beautiful! The space is huge and can easily cater to bigger groups while at the same time cozy and intimate corners for quiet dinners!

Coming to food, we are meat lovers and often struggle to find the right tandoor options that can satisfy our taste buds. BUT we were in for a huge surprise! The beef short ribs fired up in the tandoor oven, served with an array of homemade condiments were just beyond amazing! The meat is so tender that it just melts in your mouth, with the right amount of spices, its flavors will keep you wanting more. Slow cooked for two days and then marinated again and fired up in tandoor, it is definitely the MUST try item on the list!!

Followed by the tandoori chicken masala which was purely a comfort food and although I’m not a huge fan of curries, I did enjoy this one immensely. Paired with their special black garlic nan and tandoori roti.
Another surprise item on the list is the kurkuri bhindi! It looks simple and understated and yet the first bite and you will be blown away! Thin sliced, crispy bhindi fried with bold spices and accompanied with a tomato puree that balances the flavors just right!!

We also ordered the barbari pulao! The moment it arrived, the authentic pulao smell made it impossible to resist. Inspired by the Persian flavors, reminded me of the afghani pulao we have back home! I’m so glad we ordered this!
We were also served the Dosai complimentary which is a modern twist on the dosa served with curry leaf, mustard, tempered potato foam and “Podi” masala.
We finished our meal with the “shareefey ki kheer” which is basically custard apple kheer complimented by apple flavors and topped with pistachios! Couldn’t be a better end to such an amazing meal!
Needless to say, I thoroughly enjoyed my meal and can’t go back to try even more things on the menu.

Located in Wanchai, Daarukhana this high ceiling modern looking space looks extremely appealing. Clean, geometric brushed metal works well with the marble and amber lights.

We right away ordered the barberry pulao after making sure it wasn’t spicy at all to be palatable to the child. Dining out with a four-year-old feel a chore to anyone else?

Once the child’s order was placed, we looked into the menus for us.

The birthday boy ordered ‘Palace on Wheels’ cocktail. With the Indian state of Rajasthan as an inspiration, the drink was Bacardi Carta Blanca jazzed with some spicy Rajasthani chillies infused honey along with some pineapple and star anise. The result was great. It packed punch on the alcohol and spice, both.

I went with Kancha Re Kancha. This was their bartenders favourite and I had to give it a shot, which was totally worth it. A strong refreshing drink inspired by Nepal – peach infused Khukri Rum, Cointreau and lemon juice.

They were winning with the drinks and then came the pulao. Not too far after ordering, it lacked the visual appeal but made up in the taste. With garam masala plenty (or something similar), it reminded me much of pav-bhaji-pulav. I knew well the child wouldn’t have it as-is, one spoonful and he confirmed it with his “spicy” look and tell.

I asked them to get a little yoghurt for the child. They nodded and proceeded to get a big bowl of it. I told them it would be a lot and if we could only get a little (the hubster and I really, really dislike wasting food). But the server told us that’s what the order portion is on the menu!

I saw raita on the menu, I knew the child wouldn’t eat it. I knew we didn’t want to eat it. And I asked for a little yoghurt! I’m not sure if the staff wasn’t trained or empowered to make a decision like that, but is it much to ask two spoonfuls of something on the side that is not saffron or truffles?

At ~HKD 60 (USD 8), this was the most expensive yoghurt that we’ve ever eaten. For a ‘fine dining’ place, I sure expect an elevated experience to match the prices.

Anyhow, the good drinks make sure we didn’t leave with sour after-taste from that yoghurt! Our food followed soon after.

First up was the ‘Baingan Two Ways’ – aubergine cooked in two different styles – a combination of fried & tandoor roasted bharta or slurry.  The description made me imagine it as equal portions of the two cooking styles, but it was more like bharta being the main, with four crips fried slices of eggplant topped.  The taste was supreme. That smokiness! Second to none, this is the best baingan bharta I’ve eaten till date.

I’ve never eaten Nawabi Haleem before, and that took my interest. The vegetarian version of this popular dish from Lucknow consisted of mixed vegetables and a lentil stew. It was like a thick dal, again, nothing like I’ve eaten and absolutely lip-smacking.

The tandoori roti to go with the food was thin, crisp, well done.

The only disappointment, in terms of taste of the food was this dessert which they called Airy Milk Cake – saffron milk reduction foam, pistachio, almonds. What it really was, was whipped cream with the saffron, pista and almonds.  The taste was good and it was most likely whipped to order but here’s what I didn’t like about it.

The big disappointment was the description. I was expecting a nice cake with the whipped cream as a nice topping or on the side. To call just whipped cream an airy cake – no. Just no. Calling it an airy mousse would’ve been fine, more describing of what it really was.

And second, it was too warm or room-temperature to eat. I’m an Indian and nothing can be too warm for us, but to have warm or room temperature cream was gross. Not sure if they hadn’t chilled the cream enough or they didn’t use cold utensils to whip it, but it was bad execution, in my opinion. I would also have served it in a chilled bowl.

There were 3 starters to choose from: Pomelo salad, Shakarkandi & Papdi Chaat and Kashmiri Nadru. My friend and I both chose the second one, which was a heavenly combination of Delhi roasted sweet potatoes, fried flour crisps, yogurt, mint and tamarind chutney. The main course: Mutton Boti Masala was a bit disappointing. It was a slow cooked "Ghee" roasted mutton chunks with red masala. The dish was an inspiration from Uttar Pradesh, the most populous state in Northern India. This dish went well with the naan. The lamb was nicely marinated and extremely flavoursome. The ghee and spices definitely gave an amazing kick to the curry. Yet, I found the lamb a bit overcooked and dry. I would say it's a 6 out of 10, even I'm a die-heart fan of this succulent Indian dish.

My friend chose the "Baingan two ways", which was aubergine cooked in two different styles, with a nice combination of fried and tandoor roasted bharta. I was really surprised that this was extremely indulgent and undoubtedly a delight to the palate. The fried and crispy aubergine gave a nice contrast to the creamy mashed one. The roasted eggplant had a tantalizing savouriness, which combined majestically with the buttery naan.

Overall, this new modern Indian dining spot was worth visiting. It cost only $138 for the chef's special lunch which includes a starter, main and drink. Will definitely come back to this cozy place!

Most importantly, we went on Christmas Eva and we could choose to order the festive menu or a la carte (without imposing min charge). Great hospitality for a perfect evening.

HK has needed an Indian restaurant of Daarukhana's calibre for a long time and it's fair to say that the Indian restaurant scene in HK has been disappointing when compared to other cities with a significant Indian population. With a chef who used to be the chef de cuisine at Indian Accent in Delhi, Daarukhana puts out modern, inventive Indian food. We sampled a number of the dishes on the menu and I could not find fault with a single one! Cocktails are interesting too and service was very good for a restaurant which had just opened.
Congratulations to the chef and team at Daarukhana for a very welcome addition to the HK dining scene. Highly recommended!
