朋友旅行途經香港停一晚,我地決定帶佢地去大坑「搵食」!本來打算食西餐,但兩位遊客居然想食中菜~ 都得!!! 因為大坑就係咩都有得食最後揀了來「私房蔡」。地方很少但竟然不用等,可能是已經9pm吧~我地4個人,叫了四餸一湯胡椒豬肚湯一盅夠四個人飲,每人大約有兩碗很重胡椒味!!! 飲完喉嚨會熱辣辣,但又好好飲wo! 椒鹽鮮魷本餐推介! 份量多,炸得岩岩好! 最重要係無好「厚粉」,每舊鮮魷都真係咁大件啫啫通菜煲 & 啫啫雞煲呢兩度煲仔菜不算特別好味,不過不失!清湯鮮牛腩煲無可否認這道招牌菜一上枱就吸引了大家的注目因為實在太香牛味了!!! 「私房蔡」的麻婆豆腐入口帶點甜酸的茄汁味,辣意非常輕淺,令我想起多年前日本友人送我的中華料理版麻婆豆腐,那味道當然是為日本人度身訂造的,作為香港人就不是我的喜好!

對著大鍋子的麻婆豆腐,我們唯有把它打包,翌日我加入蒜蓉、薑蓉、乾蔥碎、指天椒、豆瓣醬等重新煮理,將其變成合符我口味的麻婆豆腐,幸好沒有浪費!

坊間能滿足我的咕嚕肉不多,由於前述的菜式未如如期理想,唯將美味的希望寄託於咕嚕肉上。

咕嚕肉保持香脆的外層,唯豬肉不算厚身,調味及口感可以更好!而醬汁味道較淺,未能將咕嚕肉獨有的酸甜突出,感覺比一般的好,但未能讓人留下深刻的印象!

當晚到訪「私房蔡」確是有著多少的失望!未能到喉、也擦不到胃的味道,只覺將各菜式的特式掩沒,希望只是偶有失手而已!

之後等了差不多十五分鐘,其餘的菜還未到,還欠啫啫芥蘭煲,半隻雞和胡椒豬肚湯,於是催促店員,店員竟説沒芥蘭,說轉唐生菜有沒有問題。至於豬肚湯就説要等其他客人落單才一起煮,這是什麼歪道理!之後不到五分鐘,啫啫生菜煲跟湯也到了。其實我們懷疑是漏單,但店員的爛籍口也太可笑吧!説回啫啫生菜煲,一點也不啫,毫無鑊氣可言!胡椒豬肚湯份量頗多,一人起碼有兩碗,味道非常一般,不夠胡椒味,喝完完全沒䁔意。

之後又等了十幾分鐘,預訂的半隻雞還沒上,但周圍都找不到店員。於是友人就打電話到店𥚃問,接電話應是老闆娘,十分緊張,即説立即過來了解。老闆娘一到就説伙計漏了單,問我們還要不要,我們其實已經差不多飽,而且亦等候多時,於是決定取消。老闆娘說沒問題並多次道歉。埋單時,是老闆娘親自拿單來,亦又再次致歉,老闆娘服務一流。
吃罷這一餐,大家一致認為同一價錢可有更好的選擇,同一食物,亦有更多比他好吃,價錢亦更低。總結,食物大多一般水準,如果會再到的話,應只為牛腩煲與煲仔飯。

Sadly, inflation and rental hikes have likely pushed the prices up stratospherically, and for the three of us, it came to $300 a head. Here's what we had:

- Ger Ger vegetable pot (or "gel gel" as their menu calls it): my idea of "ger ger" pots is that the pot is so hot it would sear anything that touches it, giving the ingredients a slightly charred taste that adds depth to the flavour. But this one was just normal vegetables in a pot, didn't taste any different to a normal stir-fry. We divvied up the pot and had about 3 stalks of Chinese lettuce each.
- Pepper squid and fish: the batter was thin but not crispy, and there wasn't much pepper taste to it. We had about 1-2 pieces of fish and squid each.
- Beef brisket in clear broth: this was the best dish of the evening, with thinly sliced beef that has been braised in a tasty broth until it's super tender but the flesh still clung to the bits of ligament/fat without falling apart, there were quite a few large pieces of turnip and some cabbage at the bottom of the pot.
- Eel and "chuan pepper" claypot: I expected the chuan pepper to add some heat to the dish, but sadly the few slivers of red pepper didn't do much more than add some colour to the dish. The eel was however very tender and smooth, but out of the 6 pieces, 2 of them were end cuts and about the size of a $5 coin. The liver sausage was lean but not too chewy, however my friend didn't think it was a stand-out compared with her favourite from Yung Kee. $138.
- Squid and pork patty claypot: this was another "normal" dish that one would expect from any claypot restaurant, there was nothing to suggest it was worth the $118 price tag. One could have easily concocted the same dish at home for fraction of the price.
*The rice for the claypot was soft, with a thin layer of skin surrounding the pot that was chewy but not burnt. The soy sauce as mentioned by someone earlier was nothing to write home about.

Perhaps my expectations of a popular claypot rice restaurant was higher than what I experienced here, I didn't think the quality of the food nor the environment reflected the prices. We left feeling slightly disappointed.

Came to this place with high expectations based on good things heard from friends. Really wanted to try their famous chicken, but were told when ordering that there were none left! This was at 7:30pm! It must be really great then...

Instead settled on three simple dishes to try out, one was a hit, the other a big miss...

Started with the meat patties, which was actually an afterthought where ordering. We only ordered this because everything else we wanted was not available. But they were surprisingly juicy and tender and full of flavour and was actually really nice. A must try for anyone who has not before.

We also ordered some scallops with vermicelli as an entree. They were ok, very average, tasty sauce, but the scallops were not that fresh or that big at all. Not worth the price.

The main dish we tried though and were looking forward to was their pork liver pot. Sounded great in principle, but when we tasted it, it was dry and lifeless. Was obviously made from frozen liver, and this led to a stiff consistency and not enough flavour soaked within the liver itself. A terrible disappointment.
Same can be said about the service. The serving staff seem to give preference to the regulars, and at one stage, we were served the wrong dish from a waiter, who then had the courage to blame us for not ordering clearly. What happened to the customer is always right?? Given all the great things we heard from this place, it was average at best, and would need to think hard before coming back.

Choi's Kitchen is a Hong Kong local style restaurant located in Tai Hang. The settings was very simple with several wooden tables and stools. The place was small and uncomfortable to seat in, but the food is nice and very homey.

Pepper Soup with Pork Stomach
I have always loved Pepper Soup with Pork Stomach, I like them very peppery. Choi's Kitchen soup was flavourful with strong pepper taste! The pork stomach were thoroughly washed with no stinky smell or taste. The pork stomach was chewy but rather bland in taste. The salty pickled vegetables were hence perfect to go with the pig stomach. The pepper soup was lovely but I had better ones in China!

Stir-fry Vegetables with Shrimp Paste
Shrimp paste is one of my favourite condiment, I love it's aroma and it's strong taste. This dish was however disappointing as the shrimp taste was very light and could not capture the shrimp paste's taste. The Garlic wHadith the other hand tasted too salty and had a horrible soft texture. The only nice thing I can say about the dish was that it's not oily.

This clay pot is spectacular! The Eel was heavenly smooth and savoury! The soya sauce was needed to enhance the flavour! Rice is cooked perfectly, each rice grain was dry enough with lots of rice crisp at the pot side and bottoms.

Choi's Kitchen in Tai Hang is famous for their clay pot rice, what's unknow to me was that they are very nice at other dishes too. The restaurant is always full, reservation in advanced is highly recommended. You might find their service is rather horrible especially the waiters' attitude, they can be very blunt sometimes. If you go a few times, you will understand that iss what their personality are. Price-wise, Choi's Kitchen is priced a bit higher than my expectation, but given its location, it is still acceptable. If you are looking for dishes other than Clay Pot rice, I would recommend you to go to another Chinese (e.g. Happy Fish Bistro) in the same area.

川椒白鱔煲仔飯($108)可說是全晚的亮點。粗大白鱔切件,大片大片的鋪滿飯面,光是視覺上便勝過了坤記那煲。鱔肉不腥,豉汁味香,川椒再加添點辛香,不放豉油味道亦很足夠。難怪不少人聞知蔡記煲仔飯的蔡師傅重出江湖開此店時都紛紛為煲仔飯而來。

蝦醬豬肉煲仔飯($98)則叫人有點失望,蝦醬味不夠濃不夠香,不大能吃得出來,豬肉片肥瘦參半。跟白鱔那煲一樣加了臘腸及膶腸各一條(每條$13),這裡用的是豬膶腸而非鴨膶腸,臘腸膶腸皆瘦,觀其橫切面並不見一顆顆透明的肥油粒,不過亦為飯添了分豬油香。

炸成如此白的椒鹽鮮魷還真是頭一趟遇見,椒鹽味偏輕,炸粉不厚但乏味,我們都比較喜歡一般炸得金黃那種,即使比較油膩。

店名私房蔡,猜想因為是家庭式作業的原故(蔡氏家庭?)。六人晚飯結帳$1452,事前早已有心理準備,所以也不會感到驚訝。只是付此私房菜價吃排檔菜式,我可是有過期望。可惜是次水準並不理想,除了白鱔煲仔飯,也想不起什麼出色之物,再訪的機會也不大了。

兩款食物也是有水準的, 只不過未算最好, 但整體感覺還是不俗. 服務方面, 店員態度是幾友善的. 環境就實在一般, 相當擠逼, 當然, 小店也不能有太大要求. 價位方面, 其實不算便宜, 但能夠吃到有水準的食物, 還是合理的.

再來的是豉油王煎厚豬扒。 這個豬扒還真夠厚身,但以索價百多元來說,真的要試試是否內有乾坤。 一咬下去,完全吃不到豉油王的味道,再吃一次都是沒有豉油的味道,還真以為來錯了。 蒜味則非常的搶味,是蒜香豬扒而不是豉油王豬扒,我想這麼的說。 豬扒還是雪藏貨,切得這麼厚身,又要做到肉質鬆軟,梳打粉也。 雖然它們已經下得很少,但經梳打粉的鬆軟帶來了不同的味道和口感,這個價錢的食品真的不應該如此品質。 這個,有點不能接受。

最後我們點了的湯也到場,味道是甘甜的,湯渣也豐。 但主打的涼瓜則較少,只有潦潦幾件,白豆其實是黃豆,煲得火候夠了自然軟身,唐排也有幾件。 湯入口是味濃,胡椒的香味和辣味,但突然覺得非常奇怪。 呷一杯茶再喝,為何湯是有著魚的腥味呢,湯本身是白色的早已有點奇怪,但豬骨湯煲至白色是常見的,也有酒樓會加淡奶為湯品變色,但這裡的白色原來出自鮮魚。 那就有點攪錯了是嗎。 好端端一煲排骨湯,苦瓜味輕也算了吧,竟然是魚湯再加入排骨變成了排骨湯。 天呀! 這也是第一次還見。 其實湯的味道不錯,魚湯的味道也豐,胡掓的氣味和辣味抵了魚腥味道,也有一點點排骨和苦瓜的味道,說實在是一個不錯的湯。
