The chicken tikka was delicious, it was not too spicy and the pieces of chicken were succulent and tender, however it was slightly salty.

Usually you hear the news of Chinese food closing down and it never meant a thing to me, but this time I was actually quite saddened.

Anyway, got there late in the afternoon and as it is possibly my last fish and chips from there so it was hard to decide which type of fish because they were all my favourites.

I was having trouble deciding between Sole and Plaice because both are rare in Hong Kong and this is possibly the only place that serves it.
In the end I ordered the plaice and chips with an extra fish cake.

As well as fish and chips they had curries which I hope I can make another emergency trip down here to try it especially the saag paneer and rice.

Plaice is quite a flat fish, so the thickness of the filet is thinner than the other fishes.
I love the succulent texture and it was just delicious because I have not had that fish in ages.

Fired bar mar絕對給我驚喜!!外脆內麵團柔軟,味道有點像笑口棗
。一叮點油益味也沒有!餡是朱古力…mousse? “mousse”芯內還有焦糖漿。整個Combination超得!!


吃到中途,有點不捨得,這麼用心做的食物,又遭租金逼遷?可悲的是,小店獨有的味道、香港本有的文化,繼續被蠶蝕。

As soon as we entered the premises, we were greeted politely but that is where it all stops. The restaurant seems to be a fast food place as well as the repair shop. As explained by the host, their microwave broke down and so, the engineer has to fix it, but in the middle of the restaurant area, bothering every customer and making the other table next to us, feeling uneasy. Those behind me were wondering about the health hazards involved, not least. Whenever one of their kitchen equipment breaks down, be warned.

Back to the food, the fish and chips were quite nice, although not the best. There are not many places that make good chunky chips and this place is not one of them: on that occasion, the fries were too oily and it is never good nor healthy to have fries that is still soaking from oil. When it comes to the fish, we had the cod and the haddock. Althought there was nothing wrong with the taste, the problem is that there was nothing that stood out - the accompanying sauce was very bland and that did not help with the taste of the fishes which themselves were well fried, but weak in flavour. In addition, I had the impression that the batter had a little too high tendency to crumble and separate too easily from the fish. That is minor, but I have been to places where the batter sticks to the fish and this is really how it is supposed to be.

The side dish of mushed peas was alright and is a good accompaniment to the above selection of fish and chips. However, something zestier/tangier would have been preferable - you might notice that the fish batter and fish were bland/tasteless (not too salty and not very 'fishy' in taste but then again, that is the type of the fish), but combining the complimentary mushed peas with the fish and chips is not a great combination. You really need tomatoes or a lemon , or if possible, tartare sauce with it.

As the portions were very average, we also ordered a pie - they had a decent selection but again, the portion was puny. Although we were told that it would be reasonable to share, the pie was really the size of a tennis ball and I would not recommend it to you as a main dish (although it is charged as much as one), but the taste was ok.

The place is not very well lit and it is not a good place to sit in. I could not get any decent pictures, because:
1) somehow the iphone's performance in the dark is abysmal, even with flash.
2) the place is in a dark alley and is not very well lit.

Moreover, maybe all the eating experience boiled down to not eating in a pleasant environment, but this place is 'ok' but there is nothing spectacular. I had better.
Other Info. : Whenever one of their kitchen equipment breaks down, be warned: we had to have an engineer working on the microwave, on the table next to us.

The fish was battered haddock, served with chunky chips, mushy peas and tartare sauce.
Haddock is really some cheap white fish out there if you just go to the counter and ask what’s good.
It was slightly greasy, but since it was fresh out of the fryer and put on plate straight away, I guess that’s forgiveable.The crunch gives way to the flaky white fish, moist and tasteful. I was glad that the batter wasn’t too thick as well

Mushy peas has its importance with the fish and chips, its the vitamin provider to make your guilt go away, then tried the pickled Egg, the solid and firm outer leads to a strong and tangy taste, Yum~
The chunky chips is simply rich and mouthful.

The moment I stepped into this shop, I knew was at the right place. No doubt about it.


Out of the 6 customers I saw in the shop, three of them were Brits.


Chilled out Asian (Indian) Chef in the kitchen and Asian staff. (S.Asians are called Asians in the UK. Orientals are called S.E. Asians if I remember correctly, or Orientals.) Definitely a familiar sight in the UK.

Top marks for authenticity.


The oily smell, simple decor, dim lighting, large dusty tiles, old solid wooden tables and chair sets (even if newly purchased) all add to the authentic chip shop experience. Excellent!

NB: The oil smell was quite strong indeed. So suitable for your Marks & Sparks machine washable suit but not your taylor made three piece! Don't wear your best dress.

To be honest, I haven't really compared different fishes used for fish and chips. So I went for what I felt to be the most orthodox option - Cod.

All fish and pies came with chips and mushy peas or baked beans. I ordered a coke with it.

Piping hot!

After I cut open the crisp but not too oily batter, I started enjoying my fish.

The cod was great!

It's better than what I had at Jimmy's Kitchen (It's good too - they used fresh garoupa, but I like those here more), Trafalgar, and Devil's Advocate (average: the batter was bread crumbs and the fish wasn't firm enough. Chips no good.) ...etc.

It reminded me of what I had at the Borough Market and another famous one I had at Covent Garden (forgot the name now)! Is it just my imagination? Might even be better than those! Perhaps, distance makes memory grow fonder.


This fish and chip reminded me of those young, naive and slightly lonely days, when the fish and chips at the Strand, Duke of Wellington, Old Bank of England, the Wheel & Barrow, Weatherspoon, the Honest Lawyer(!) and a pub near Queen Mary...etc. provided a nice, filling meal at relatively affordable prices. Also a place to play chess and drink Guinness with friends...

(unlike many rip off "fusion" restaurants which tasted horribly bad with stuck up services - the reason why I don't really enjoy having "Western" food in Hong Kong now. It's PTSD
.)

Memories all coming back to me now...

For those who doesn't like mushy peas (i.e. most of my friends), baked beans is an available option.

今日去行石板街順便找這鋪 沒想到原來就在石板街裡 去既時候就唔係好多人 但走個陣就滿客 哈哈好彩好多人都係尊登來食fish & chilp既我今次點了個sole既fish炸得很鬆化 配埋他的沙拉醬真的很捧 (我一向討厭的沙拉醬)另外薯條有下鹽 0岩晒我不喜歡點茄醬既人另外點了杯latte 比外面的cafe也不錯可能我未食過fish & cilp 但我真的覺得很好但英國菜真的很貴呢D都係間中食下算吧

英倫這個地方著名/好吃的食物不多,數來數去都離不開炸魚薯條。記得那時去倫敦,小妹仍然是窮學生一名,high tea沒我份兒,吃得最多一定是麵包和kebab,就連炸魚薯條都只是吃過一次,所以對那次在倫敦一條橋底下的一間diner吃的炸魚薯條,那感覺叫我一直都記得!是晚在這裡,我又有一點當時的感覺......首先這家餐廳是位於一個地下位置,非常不顯眼。室內座位很擠迫,我倆甚至要坐在廚房門口,真的很焗。然後我們便拿出團購券,一份炸魚薯條和一份魚柳漢堡,兩罐汽水,很簡單的一頓晚餐。看到像是菲藉的店員直接把炸好的魚放在碟上/夾在沒有翻熱的麵包中,很raw很簡單,就這樣給客人(即我們)了。Fish Burger看著這份漢堡,小妹又有窮的感覺!一塊中等身型的魚柳夾在凍冰冰的麵包中,有點雞肋的感覺,結果我還是沒有把麵包吃掉,只吃了魚柳和一點兒的麵包。然後是很油膩的薯條,因為都沒有用吸油紙稍微吸一吸油就直接上碟,而且就是小貓幾條的感覺,吃是吃得飽的,不過感覺真的很有我在那倫敦橋底下吃炸魚的窮學生感覺!Fish & Chips比漢堡好一點,魚塊有大約五塊,都是剛炸好就立刻上碟,故也很油膩,但起碼吃得滋味。

比漢堡好一點,魚塊有大約五塊,都是剛炸好就立刻上碟,故也很油膩,但起碼吃得滋味。薯條也是一樣,沒有吸油的,不過也肥肥厚厚的。所以都滿意。

事實上是一間很有英倫味道的食店,不過不是小妹所嚮往的... 今天在報紙上看到西貢有一家看起來很不錯的炸魚薯條店,看來要去一趟!

I love eating chips surrounded by glass jars of pickles and the British radio in the background.Nothing like a perfect sunday by the seaside.Anyway, eating in Central will do fine for me.On this visit I had most of the sides that I am usually too full to try.Ordered picked egg, pickled onions, steak and kidney pie, gravy, Haggis, Black pudding, fishcakes, cheese and onion pie, sausage, egg and bacon butty, and deep fried mars bar.★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★Pickled eggFor $10 its about the same price

Pickled egg
For $10 its about the same price as those runny eggs served in ramen joints, but this one is pickled.
I found it very appetising especially the egg white.

Deep fried bars mar:
It was different to how I thought it would be done, it was dipped into a dough batter and not the fish batter.
It tasted like an undusted sugar donut with a melted mars bar inside.
The sweetness was just right as well because the mars bar inside gave the dough the sweetness.

Steak and kidney pie:
Made by the Chippy themselves after numerous trials from different kidneys and beef to get the best taste.
The pie has a cute cow on the top.

There are two versions, bread or bun, bread is more traditionally used in UK and chips and butter are usually sandwiched in between.
The version I had today was the bun type.

Cheese and onion pastry
As usual, it tastes brilliant, the cheese is not elastic or stringy.
The onions inside were finely chopped and molten mixed with the cheddar cheese.

My boss is from UK and I asked him to recommend the best fish n chips in town, and the answer was Chippy.I had fish and chips during my first visit and it was really good. The fish was fresh and deeply fried with a very good crunchy texture, i.e. not too thick not too thin. Chips were also great with an authentic taste of good quality potato. I visited the second time a few days ago and I ordered Fish burger with chips. That was actually much better than I expected because the bun was grilled/baked and the sauce was also great. Chips were great as usual. I would definitely come back again and again for their fish burger (best in town in my opinion)

P.S. the shop is located at the junction of Wellington Street (opposite to Shake em Buns and Hyde) at a very dark corner down the slope so it is very difficult to locate.

There were a few customers, but had a couple tables available.The smell reminded me of chippies in the U.K and for a few moments it was quite comforting. Soup - Was ok, tasted like pumpkin soup, nothing special. 6/10
Fish - Very good, though it wasn't Cod, a big piece of Sole, fresh, flaked nicely, light crisp batter, bit of Salt & Vinegar, Mmmm.Delicious! 9/10
Chips - Could have been chunkier, not greasy, good quality potato (no eyes). 8/10
Beans & Tartar Sauce - Well, just beans and tartar sauce really.

Service was friendly, the food came quickly, I've been here a few times already and I'd recommend it for anyone who misses a good chippy meal once in a while. They even have the Daily Mirror, if that's something you use to pick up in the morning. Fried Mars bars for the overly health conscious population looking to raise cholesterol levels to that of an average person.

After I sat down, I was given a menu.
There were so many choices of fish as you would expect.
On the table, there was the good old Sarson’s vinegar bottle! [not sure if it was real Sarson’s vinegar inside though.]

It was hard deciding what to order and they had my favourite chips with curry sauce or gravy too.
In the end I chose Fish cake and chips and Cheese and onion pie with chips.

The food came quite fast.

Fish cake and chips
This was a REAL fishcake!! The ones I had at school, ground fish with herbs and some mashed potato inside a crispy crumb coating. I went mad with the vinegar and put loads on the chips and fishcake.
Along with the fishcake there was the classic mushy peas and real tartar sauce.

Cheese onion pie
It was the same as the school ones, thick gooey cheese inside with slivers of molten onion.
Its hard to explain but it is not sickening or creamy, but really cheddary and gooey but not stringy.
The cheese becomes firm after it has cooled down for a while.
It came with gravy too!

Pie and chips - all good. Pastry as we know it and filling was definitely what I was expecting.Fish and chips. Cod. All good, but a bit too greasy. Good size and nice fish though.Bangers and chips.
