Love pho. I love it a lot. Growing up in Canada, where there is a strong Vietnamese community, I had really good pho. My best friend from high school was Vietnamese and her mom made amazing pho. But when I moved to Hong Kong, it just wasn't the same. I think I can only name one place in Hong Kong where the pho is comparable to the what I grew up with. The rest were just MSG laced bowls of soup.Until I found this place. 志明越南料理 (English name Chi Minh Vietnamese Cuisine) is located in Tin Hau. It's sort of in a side street where there are other cha chan tengs. It's not a new shop but I think I passed by this place so many times and never decided to give it a try. Until today.Small and cramped, it played Vietnamese music. The owner is Vietnamese, too. Menu is in English and Chinese. It is cash only and there is no 10% service charge. I came at lunch and there were a lot of expats ordering take out! Best kept secret in the expat community? They have a fairly reasonable priced lunch menu. This includes a drink. Boyfriend and I decided to order from there. Just to say ... we waited half and hour for our food.Slices of Raw Beef, Beef Brisket, Beef Balls and Beef Tendon Pho ($52). First off, the broth is amazing. Rich beef flavor that seemed like the ones I had off the back streets of Vietnam. Clearly this soup was made from scratch. The noodles were rice noodles and not the same as the ones in Vietnam but oh well ... the soup is what sealed the deal. The meat was all very good and not tough at all.Sambo Meat (Pork Chops, Chicken Wings and Vietnamese Sausage) Rice ($48). The pork chops were a bit on the oily side but it had a nice lemongrass taste that was good. It was also moist and tender and not dried out. The chicken wings had a stronger lemongrass taste. But what I loved is the Vietnamese sausage. It was probably the best I had in Hong Kong and I suspect they made it themselves. The closest to an authentic Vietnamese meal in Hong Kong that I've experienced. Though it did take a long time for our meal to be served. We waited half an hour! But it was worth the wait. Sadly, we overheard a customer asking if the owner found a new location. It appears they are closing due to the increase in rent! I tried this place too late to return again! I'll have to keep a tab on this to see where they will open next.…Read More
