Went for lunch with colleagues and tried this Taiwan-based eatery famed for its siu lung bao (pork and soup dumpling with very thin coat) outside its country of origin (whether Taiwan is a country is of course controversial) for the first time. 

The queues were so long that we had to use the Shatin New Town Plaza app to reserve for a table beforehand. We started off with a cold dish which was a common Shanghaiese appetizer - "the four happiness" with preserved flour, mushroom, beans and fungi. Then dumplings in red chili sauce where the smoothness of the dumpling was in stark contrast to and yet complemented by the hot chili oil. The renowned siu lung bao dumplings were less distinguished than the ones I tried in Taipei; here the dumpling coat was somewhat thicker and the flavour less enticing. The vegetarian dumplings were unexpectedly fresh though. The fried Indian lettuce was slightly greasy but it didn't affect the taste. We didn't expect the "siu mai" to be another form of siu lung bao with shrimps atop, and like its counterparts they were not very outstanding. The roast chicken egg fried rice was fair only as the chicken was a bit tough. The dandan noodles were good with just-right texture and a strong but-not-too-spicy flavour. The desserts were another variant of the carbohydrate dumplings; taro buns and red bean sponge cake. 

At $175 per capita this would have been a very good bargain but for the fact that the food was subpar and too roughly prepared. Good for foreigners and tourists who had not tried this genre of food before, but I was expecting more of this brand.
