After seeing the various "good" reviews from openrice I decided to give it Pumpernickel a try at the Tin Hau location. Unfortunately it was VERY disappointing. Maybe the food is very good, but the service is absolutely terrible. Pumpernickel looks like the type of cafe where you order at the counter and get food/coffee yourself. Pumpernickel looks like the type of cafe where you order at the counter and get food/coffee yourself. So I went up to the counter when I walked in and the man just gave me a blank stare as if I was doing something wrong. So I asked him if it was appropriate to order at the counter. He waited a couple seconds and pointed to a table and told me that I would order at my table. Okay, then why didn't you greet me and say so when I walked in?
Then I ordered a coffee - 45 dollars which is basically the price you pay at other coffee shops except service is actually good. Not to mention Pumpernickel is very dirty and not well kept. The chairs are very uncomfortable, and the height to the table is not good for dining. The coffee itself was just average - basically anything you'd get elsewhere. Nothing special.
The service was very bad - I need to emphasize this again. The staff never smile, are not attentive and seem to just not care about their customers. I don't know how to explain it but the dining experience is very uncomfortable.
The best part? They charge you 10% service charge for non-existent service. It's laughable.
I will not be returning for mediocre coffee, a dirty environment and non-existent service.
