My advice: Review your drink charges, but very good, high quality food.

As a background, my firm held our Chinese New Year party at Oolaa - booked out the entire veneu a few months back and the food was excellent. We also have had catering done by Oolaa - wraps, sandwiches, salads - excellent taste, very good food.

Took my wife here for breakfast - we had Bruschetta and brekkie burrito. Food was good, good taste, my wife's only complaint was the bread did not taste like sourdough - it's not sour like SF sourdough. My brekkie burrito was nice, except it tasted almost like a sausage/bacon burrito, eggs were missing and so i even had to order a side order of eggs. Great for you meat lovers!!!

Oolaa does good presentation, food tastes good, is hot, clean, consistent quality.

My issue was at the very end of the meal. Upon sitting down, my wife had orders 'hot water with lemon.' She received a pot of hot water, a hot water cup and a slice of lemon. When we got the bill at the end, there was a CHARGE of HK$30 for the hot water.

I have no issues paying - but come on - hot water, with a slice of lemon, a $30 charge??? The hot water was almost 30% of her brushetta order ($95). After a 3 min discussion and debate with the waitress, the charge was removed, but a bad taste was left in my mouth.

It's as if the restaurant is after your money first, good food second - and service is weak.

Receipt attached. Be warned. Check your bill - my black coffee was HK$40 a cup - that's FUEL (IFC) type charges and I didn't even get espresso shots!

Good food though. Good space - definitely good for families and kids. It's unfortunate they wanted to charge for hot water, what's next, charging for salt & pepper?

Introduction

Bought to you by castelo concepts, who owns Jaspas, sushi O (next door), Zaks, Harringtons, Piccolos etc so there must be some expectations from them. A big company and expertise in these sorts of restaurants
A lil introduction from their website

'The latest addition to the Castelo Concepts’ family is Oolaa. Having opened its doors in October, Oolaa is a unique all day dining and drinks destination. Located on Soho’s Bridges Street, at the ground floor of the luxury residential complex CentreStage, Oolaa is a 6000 square foot venue housing a restaurant, lounge bar, cafe corner and private dining area all under one roof.

With a seating capacity of 120 guests, Oolaa restaurant, with its intimate outdoor terrace, “fine wine corner”, wood fired pizza oven, serves an array of high quality unpretentious worldly cuisine; with a wine list to match.

The Bar area exudes a loungy atmosphere with its classic design and elegant drink list…..the perfect spot for a pre-dinner cocktail, happy hour with colleagues or to ring in the weekend with friends! After the dinner shift, Oolaa’s loungy bar will slip into something a little bit more comfortable with some soulful tunes and sinful grooves, while the drinks keep on flowing.

Last and certainly not least, Oolaa’s cafe corner is an early morning haven for Central’s city slickers and a Bridge Street’s weekend hang out. Comfy sofas and chairs, the smell of ground Illy coffee and freshly baked pastries will lure you in and make it tough to leave.'

Food

Eggs Benedict

"Eggs Benedict is a dish that consists of two halves of an English muffin, topped with ham or bacon, poached eggs, andHollandaise sauce." from Wikipredia
Egg benedicts

Egg benedicts

The Eggs Benedict looked devine. The hollandaise sauce was beautifully done and settled on the surface of the egg. Even the eggs are perfectly poached.
Lovely poached egg

Lovely poached egg

I have tried making a poached egg before, it was incredibly hard to make it perfect. Meaning the shape of it, the texture, obviously the timing has to be perfect. What I love about these poached eggs are both of them seemed to me, identical size and shape.
Egg benedicts

Egg benedicts

There were generous amount of Hollandaise sauce. I must admit, this was the most 'musturd' colour Hollandaise sauce I have seen. Usually they would be pale yellow, here it is almost like musturd. The leg ham was heavenly. I expected it to be as thin as paper, but this was generous. Not too thick, where I really need to chew my teeth off. But thick to where I can chew bit and taste the flavor of the ham!
Spinach and ham

Spinach and ham

It was an incredible idea to add the buttered spinach underneath the ham. Firstly, it made the whole thing much healthier (yes with some green, I cheated my mind to think it is a healthy dish despite how many eggs is made to use the sauce!)

Firstly the spinach is delicious as it is lightly buttered, and it neutralize the saltiness of the ham. I loved it. It is first Egg benedict with green in it. I cannot say it is extrodinary, but the experience was pleasant. What was missing?
Perfect yolk

Perfect yolk

I think it must be the eggs. Do not get me wrong, it was perfect poached eggs. Golden yellow egg yolk, identical shape and size. Perfectly poached, when I cut into it, the egg yolk flows out all over, and I dip the muffin into the runny egg yolk. It was heavenly.

So what went wrong? The egg itself. It was tasteless. I wanted to find out what egg they used. A cheap one/ I could taste it of course but yo can tell it wasn't a good egg where you will pop it in your both and go 'mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm im in Heaven'

The Hollandaise sauce was distinctive. It is less creamy than other Hollandaise sauce I have tasted but it goes well with the ham and spinach altogether. As a whole package, it was a delightful dish

Oolaa' Big Breakfast

Oolaa's BIG breakfast
It consisted of:

2 eggs (any style you wanted)
2 Pork sausages,
3 pieces smoked bacon,
Roast Roma tomato,
Baked beans,
Mushrooms,
Home fried potatoes
A toasted sour dough
Big Breakfast

Big Breakfast

Cannot miss out on a Big Breakfast when you are out for brunch, but not many places in Hong Kong gives you an authentic English breakfast. I think Oolaa's Big breakfast is as good as it gets in Hong Kong.

First of all I would like to state, THEIR PORK SAUSAGES ARE THE REAL THING!!!!! I hate, and I mean hate going places, and their menu says ' English breakfast' or 'American breakfast' then when it arrives on my table, they give me these chinese cheese sausage which you can get from Park n Shop or bit better they give me frankfurters. I prefer my good old Cumberland sausages. Although these weren't Cumberland, they were still thick pork sausages. I cuuld taste the herbs in it. i love it. These are the real sausages!
Oolaa's BIG breakfast

Oolaa's BIG breakfast

Eggs weren't anything special as they were just sunny side up. I am sure it is quite easy to make and like I said previously, the egg weren't the best I have tasted. I loved the mushroom though. It was generously seasoned (for once) I tasted the pepper and the salt in it. There are so many places that don't bother seasoning the mushrooms, they miss out how important that is for the taste buds.

I liked the fried potatoes. They were cut into small cubes, just right for bite size! If all the cubes added up, probably only 1/4 of a potato. But there were lack of seasoning, I added salt and pepper myself. But It was still good, something different from a hashbrown.

There were only 3 bacons pieces and they were quite tough and hard, but obviously they tasted so good, who can resist bacon?

Overall the Big breakfast is average, nothing mindblowing, nothing you cannot make a home. No surprise there at all. Maybe if there is next time, I won't order this again.

Atmosphere

The atmosphere here is better than the food, it is a fact. The restaurant is big. One side is for dining, can fit around 15-18 tables, and the other side is the bar and lounge with sofas. I was told if no reservation you will be taken to the bar. Which I actually prefered. The music is different, bit more relax and less tense. There are sofas and people there seems less tense. It seems more like area where you want to chill and chat for long time while having a drink or so. They have the open window on that side facing the street, how peaceful. As the location is high up in central, it is much more quiet and less busy than soho itself.

The dining area seems more tense. Everybody used their hushed voice and sat up straight and looked serious. I guess this side is for the REAL thing. Although I prefer the other side, this side is obviously for business lunch or something more sincere.

The atmosphere is still nice. Peaceful and relaxing.

The lights were dim and at 5 o'clock straight, the lights were turned even dimmer which made the mood more romantic.

White tablecloth and brown chairs, very classic look don't you think?

Tables were not clued together like noram soho places would be. Place was quite spacious, part from the 2 seaters dining tables, they were closer together, the bigger tables were more spreaded out. I can assure you I cannot hear the table infront of me for once! YAY! no more 'free' gossips

Service: Poor

There weren't anything good about the service, even a long think.

They weren't rude to me either but, just looking at service. They were not up to standard.

First of all, noone ever answers the phone, I have been trying make a reservation since a night ago, noone picks up. So how am I suppose to make a reservation, especially their website do not have the online reservation service. Even in the morning, noone was picking up. And when they FINALLY answered, they were blunt and unhelpful.

Upon arriving, as the restaurant is quite big, the entrance seemed to be hidden in the middle. There are two sides of the restaurant from the middle, left is the bar, right is the dining area. When I walked in, I had no idea which side to go to as I wasn't greeted. No waiter nor waitress acknowledged me. It made me feel quite lost. I went out to the counter where a lady was facing the other lady inside the counter. They looked at me as if I was asking for direction- NOT WELCOMING. I am sure costumers feels the best when they are greeted immediately and they are hired to help me out not the other way round. So why do they make me feel so unwelcome.

As our booking was at 3pm, and we were late for 20mins. The lady rudely said 'Your booking is at 3pm, oh theres last tablae for you' and showed us to a table. I looked around the dining area, there were only 7 occupied table, so only 25 percent of tables are taken up. She obviously tried to make us feel bad for being late, wich i do apologize sincerely. But there is no need to make your costumer feels guilty especially if there are free tables.

Also, they never filled our empty glass with water from the start when everybody elses has. We asked for water twice and they still not filled our glasses. They never gave us a drink menu until I ask too.

It was nearly as hard as winning the lottery when trying to catch their attention.

They are never around, even when they are, they always hovering around the counter with their back facing us. Or they are walking straight pass us even if I am calling out to them. Surely if you know you have people seating in the dining area, eating or waiting for food, it is your job to be serving them. I am not saying you need to come over and ask if I want anything all time, but atleast you will have that alert for people when they ned you.

One woman on opposite table called out for a waitress and she walked straight pass twice. She got pretty annoyed so I got hold of the waitress for her. The waitress did not apologized. And from what I saw, there was soemthing wrong with her salad,. Sos he waited for a new one. IF the waitress would have acknowledged her earlier, then maybe the poor lady did not have to wait 5mins to tell her the problem and wait another 10mins for a new one. As her friend has already started eating hers.

I had to wait another extra 10mins for the bill as noone was around. I guess next time I can just walk out if they don't care that much

Drinks

There are fresh juices that can be ordered. At price of $50. A good healthy alternatives. But theere are wine and champagne available which I did not choose.

Iced cappuccino
My companion ordered iced cappuccino. and to our surprise it was huge, usally it would be a small glass only but this was huge. The Cappuccino was good, strong flavour with lots of milk. Just way how I like it
Ice Cappucino

Recommendation

I would definately recommend the Egg Benedict, much better than the plain old Big breakfast which was small and not worth the money. Did not even fill me up. The Egg benedict was so appetizing. Even looking at it gave me ecstasy. The perfectly poached egg and excellent hollandaise sauce. And the lovely spinach. Where else in Hong kong can you get better egg benedict?

Verdict

Would I go back again? Maybe

Rating from my brains (out of 5 hearts): ♥♥♥

Rating from my Heart (out of 5 hearts): ♥♥♥

I will come back to Oolaa, maybe not craving for it. But thinking about where to have a great Sunday brunch in Hk, nowhere can beats the atmosphere here and the above average food to be honest

Oolaa is an italian restaurant with both romantic and lively ambiance. The restaurant was huge, sectioned in three area: an intimate dining room on the right, a casual dinning room/bar area on the left and an open pizza kitchen with several bar tables and sofa in the middle. If you are coming with someone special, do make a reservation ahead to secure your table at the more romantic section on the right.

We didn't make any reservation, so we were seated at the bar area, which was fine really. The staff were very friendly but not quite attentive. The bread basket had to be asked to serve on our table, not to mention it tasted bad!

Crispy Duck Tart $130
The duck leg was served with spinach, lentils, balsamic jus and red onion salad. The duck was tender and succulent but was not crispy as the name suggested. The duck leg was savoury enough without sauce, which is good because the balsamic jus was just too crazily sour. Anyway I still have no idea why this is called a duck tart as it was not served on a tart?

Wagyu Bolognese $140
Very lovely dish with rich and savoury meat sauce on nicely cooked spaghetti (but can be cooked shorter so it could be more al dente.) The shaved parmesan cheese made the spaghetti even more desirable. Get this when you are here.

Mediterranean pizza $145
Pizza topped with Parma ham, capsicum, artichoke, semi-sun dried tomato, olives and baby spinach, probably is the worst pizza at all times. First, bad pizza base; second the combine taste of super sour and super salty was pretty disgusting. Everyone stopped after the first slice. Enough said, just don't get the pizza. It was kind of sad since they have a nice oven for the pizza, why not try to make a nicer dough?

Oolaa Cheesecake Crunch $65
We all love this beautiful and tasty cheesecake layered with house made crumbs. Its pretty much like a sawdust cake but instead of whipped cream, it was replaced by a light and smoothing cream cheese. The pairing was really nice and yum.

Mango Crumble with vanilla ice-cream $65
The mango crumble was served piping hot with a crunchy top but a soft inside. It had a strong cinnamon aroma and taste, yet there was also a pungent taste of almond which I dislike. If there was no almond in the dish, it would have been perfect.

Final Comment
The food was pretty average and kind of disappointing really. The dessert was excellent though. Hence may be dinner at yardbird and come over for a drink and dessert?

First of all, I want to say the location of Oolaa is far.. (bring a pair of hiking shoes if you want to visit during lunch hours) second of all, set prices for lunch sets are equivalent to the more "civilised" estabishments in Central / Soho area.

The service? Appauling... the staff just could not resist the temptation of restaurant patrons waiting for other friends to arrive before ordering. We were reminded time after time if the other guests are coming every 2 mins by various staff as well as the manager (just to be clear we booked a table for 6 and only waiting for the other 2).

The noise level, as previously pointed out by other patrons, Oolaa was in the "high" to "Chinese restaurant yum cha" levels.

The salad bar option for the lunch menu seems a bit stingy. Only allowed to visit ONCE (thats right! ONCE ONLY) and the bowl given were smaller then the average soup bowl, where many of the other restaurants in LKF/Soho area provide unlimited refills and I must say the other restaurants' salad bar have much wider selections and pricier seafood options.

The most disturbing thing about the entire experience was Oolaa really have a problem with patrons sharing food. If you didn't order the set lunch, then you're forbiddened to share your friend's salad, EVEN THOUGH you have ordered a an a-la-carte main course. THAT I found to be illogical and cheapest to the max!!

Food wise, it can only be categorised in the "average" calibre, I've had worst, but I've had so much better lunch options in the area. The steak was dry and the portion was quite small. The pastas weren't much better neither.

In sum, don't go with the slightest hope of great service and hospitality. Its a nice environment for afternoon tea perhaps, but for those who go for the food? Don't bother.. Oolaa will just set you up for dissapointment.

I have walked passed this very popular brunch place in Sheung Wan for perhaps the thousandth times before I actually popped in for a brekkie on a Weekday morning. And almost immediately can you see the reason for its popularity (reservation a MUST) - while weekend brunch is increasingly becoming a hit in town, not many places serve decent breakfasts or brunches during the weekends. Naturally that's an economical decision for set lunches would certainly rip a lot more money off white-collars than brunches will do from leisurable late-waking tai-tais, expats and tourists! And thus Oolaa and Classified the cheese room remain two of the very few weekend brunches around the morning dessert of the Sheung Wan spawl.

Another reason for Oolaa's success is perhaps its cosy environment - while Classified has only wooden chairs and commute tables to offer, Oolaa has comfty sofas and free wifi - and together with decent food they form the golden triangle for a breakfast that you wouldn't mind paying over a hundred for.

Staff here are exceptionally friendly - at least they didn't immediately pull a long face when they spot this poor-looking, CHINESE, student me, and greeted me to a table. The breakfast selection here is not too extensive but has everything you could think of digging in on a hungry morning - from healthy muesli to heap-ful pizzas, or just a clean toast basket or muffin, you name it.

I thought of ordering a NY Bagel but took a last turn for muesli instead, which came with fresh fruit, greek yogurt and honey.

It almost came instantly and the portion was generous! The combination of fresh fruits were very fresh and juicy, perfect as a morning sugar-rush. The muesli they use is less chewy but more crunchy variation, but i like it anyway because it has raisins and walnuts mixed with it which enrich the texture by a lot. They serve it with skimmed milk which i note was PURA, the australian brand which is more expensive but certainly better than the rest. The pot of greek yogurt was small but good enough for the muesli itself was filling enough! I had an enjoyable 45 minutes time stuffing myself with this simple yet beautiful museli and fruit mix, spoon in one hand and a book in another. Life couldn't be any more beautiful than that.

I also ordered a flat white (skinny). Personally I think the flat white here tasted just like an ordinary latte but for the mug that it was served it (they do serve lattes in latte glasses tho, following the tradition). The milk was nicely frothed and the nice abstract latte art stayed there throughout. The blend they use isn't too strong but at least wasn't too sour which i didn't like - all in all a very smoothing coffee to drink. The little coconut meringue that came with the coffee was not too sweet and chewy enough to my likings as well.

One thing to note is that the staff were actually friendly enough to apologize for a bug which pathetically flew into my milk and died….a rare find in Soho smile

Everything cost me $140. Certainly not cheap but as long as i could afford it once in a while, what's bad about having to enjoy some happy 45 minutes on a good breakfast and a good book while someone else does the stacking, cutting, coffee-ing and washing for you? smile (And not to mention the fact that I stayed full from morning till evening..did i mention they serve the American portion?)

I will be back for sure to try out the rest of the items off the brekkie menu. Hope it would be soon!

I went to Oolaa because it was one of the restaurants that offered Vegemite on the menu.
As well as Oolaa, Wagyu in Lan Kwai Fong also offers it.

Not many places in Hong Kong offer Vegemite and in some countries it is banned and I would love to know why!

Anyway, both Oolaa and Wagyu serve cheese and vegemite spread pizza.

It was a case of Wagyu's Dinki Di’s Aussie Vegemite with volcano bubbly grilled Cheddar cheese on a crispy pizza base for $95 versus Oolaa's Dynamite Pizza with molten Cheddar cheese & Vegemite for $100.

In the end I chose Oolaa because I prefer molten Cheddar cheese and not bubbly grilled cheddar cheese.

Oolaa is located on Bridges street with a nice bar.

Dynamite Pizza with molten Cheddar cheese & Vegemite:

I was slightly disappointed when the pizza arrived, the cheese was not molten, it was baked for too long that it was hard.

Although the cheese was over cooked and disappointing it tasted quite nice.
The Vegemite was really salty but that was expected.
The pizza here was what I would have expected if I dined at Wagyu because the cheese here turned out to be bubbly grilled cheddar cheese.
The pizza base and the grilled cheese was very chewy that it gave you tired jaws.

題外話/補充資料:
Before I revised this review I got Marmite and Vegemite confused because I thought they were different brands.

Vegemite is Australian and Marmite is British.

I grew up with Marmite and this was the first time I tried Vegemite which has a bitter taste compared to marmite.

Oolaa is located on Bridge Street which is quite high up hence the reason why I was too lazy to go up there.

Went there for dinner finally and it was quite nice. If this place was more accessible I would try their pizza for breakfast because they have the Dynamite Pizza which has molten Cheddar cheese & Vegemite. Not many places in Hong Kong serve food with VEGEMITE!
It would be good if this pizza was available a la carte too.

truffle mashed potatoes:

The mashed potatoes were really delicious, truffle oil was infused in the mashed potatoes.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Salad Niçoise:

This was seared peppered tuna, silver anchovies and lemon vinaigrette.
It was slightly different too because it had seared tuna, usually it is canned cooked tuna. The anchovies were slightly bigger than usual too.

Minted Green Pea Risotto:

This was minted green pea risotto with king prawns, mixed herbs and pecorino cheese.
I liked the minty taste because it was natrual and not that strong.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Veggie pizza:

The pizza was covered with lots of mushrooms, red onions, olives, bell peppers and asparagus with pesto drizzle.
I am not fond of pesto, but the pesto sauce they used here was really nice and made the pizza delicious.

We had dinner at Oolaa on a friday night but shortly after the meal, the manager came to ask us if we needed anything else. However, his intention was to ask us to leave immediately after finishing the desserts.

I don't think the service was up to standard if the manager asked the guests to leave immediately after the meal. So what is the difference between a roadside food stall and Oolaa?

I previously enjoy having brunch at Oolaa with my friends. Do we need to confirm with the restaurant how much time that we can stay before making reservation???
