Its strange isn't it? My friend initially refused to come here around 4-5 months ago - citing reasons of having received appalling treatment before. On my insistence and after finding out that its related to TATSU 達 (a pretty good place!), we came to try again during lunch time. And guess what - the service here is just as I was told and unacceptable. Even before we've finished out meal at 1:55pm, the staff GAVE us our bill then proceeded to turn off the restaurant's lights, how rude! Looks like my experienced TST dining friend was right all along.
Having said that, I'm only rating this restaurant based on its Food Quality.
************** KATSU CURRY RICE SET - The deep-fried Tonkatsu actually came with a below-average bread crumb coating, it was falling apart and slightly oily, but nevertheless acceptable since Katsu Curry's pork piece is normally lesser quality than plain Katsu served at dedicated restaurants! A typical Japanese lunch standard I shall add! The Curry Sauce however had more 'meat pieces' included than is the norm in Japan, and it was really very good and authentic - based on the more stronger spiced Japanese curry version than the sweetened, localised Hong Kong/Japanese style. Bearing in mind - making a good curry sauce is much easier than churning out perfect Tonkatsu's..
It also came with a few pieces of 福神漬 and the ice cold water correctly. Although it wasn't mentioned on the menu, this $85 Pork Katsu tasted just like a Japanese 黒豚 with its very special fat 甘味 - so I assume this was Kurobuta. The whole set was also pretty big - despite the salad and soup being a bit boring. ALL IN ALL QUITE SATISFYING vs PRICE, and much better and authentic than the one I had at 利久庵. SCORE: 3.8/5
KATSU DON SET - Friend ordered this but the sauce and the eggs/onion mixture wasn't done very well, also a tad over sugary. The previously deep-fried pork just like the above dish, having absorbed back the 'liquid' became a bit over-cooked and moistened, thus chewy in the process. It looked better than it tasted and wasn't a very good version of this dish. SCORE: 3.0/5
***************** The Ice-Coffee I had at the end of the meal tasted nearly the same as the one at 元気一杯 and indeed many other Japanese shops - but here used a correct creamer and syrup, not evaporated milk over there! Not too bitter and not a bit acidic, this had a strong 炭焼 like influence and was an 'engineered-to-suit' taste and carried that artificially desired roasty aroma, just the same as supermarket-bought UCC coffee or certain Instant Coffees. No complexity or character whatsoever!
Some people might really like this because so long as it is 香&膿 and suits their expectations of commercialised coffee. Afterall, its just another variant of an approachable 'instant coffee' designed to be that way. I just want to say, this mentality of coffee expectation is probably what's keeping us from improving and catching up with the rest of the world - to many, this would be a good coffee. I'm not disagreeing ..... I've been down that path myself! But it can be like being too safe and eating unfresh Milk Chocolates or Kitkats or Toblerone or Godiva everyday and then becoming 'resistant' when introduced to eating fresher, representational artisanal Dark chocolates later on in life... its all part of a learning process. To me personally, 岡田 Coffee is much better and takes much more efforts, because it reflects the 7 x Coffee Berrie's origin and not just another single dimensional 'roasty' coffee but look how many crying faces there are over there?
But since I enjoy eating White, Milk and Dark chocolates and coffees and anything in between from commercial to artisanal - may be I'm not the right person to judge! As an analogy, its much the same as Hong Kong people always insistent on eating poor quality, farmed Norwegian Raw Salmon in Japanese restaurants. Very boring - but I do still like them and will say so honestly. PERHAPS I have evolved and enjoy Salmon that are the fresher wild versions more these days. As a foodie, the whole point of drinking coffees or eating food.... is that we don't become stuck at the same level all the time! It hinders growth for others !
Have you ever been to a restaurant, only to find that you are the only customer ? Would you leave, thinking that the place is not worth a visit since it is so unpopular, or would you rather stay and trust your own instincts ? Such was the situation we found ourselves in as we entered this very restaurant the other day for lunch. Fortunately for us, we had the benefit of prior experience to guide us, for we had previously been to another restaurant belonging to the same group, Tatsu, and we had a most enjoyable experience then; so at the end, we decided to stay. Situated on the 6th floor of a building, with the entrance of the building located off Cameron Road in a small alley, this place was indeed rather "hidden", and we were not surprised that few people even know of its existence; we only read about this place for the first time from a magazine fairly recently. Place was decorated in simple, traditional Japanese style with ample spacing between tables. The set lunch menu offered quite a lot of choices (more than 30), mostly at very reasonable prices. After going through the menu, we finally ordered a "Kichi" special bento set and an assorted sushi set. As photography was apparently not allowed here, we simply sat back and relax this time, while the chef busied themselves with the cooking inside the open kitchen. As all these were happening, other customers (mostly Japanese) started to arrive at the doorstep, and before long our lunch was served to us.
The assorted sushi set came with appetizer, soup, 10 pieces of sushi plus an egg roll, a small bowl of cold udon, and a coffee. The appetizer was a form of mixed stew with lotus root and other vegetables, marinated in a dashi-based broth, and was nicely done; the miso soup was freshly prepared and had depth in flavour, definitely not those run-of-the-mill stuff usually served in other local Japanese restaurants; the cold udon was nice and tangy and served in a sweet soy broth; egg roll was of the right texture and fine, although a bit lacking in flavour; and sushi were all reasonably fresh by lunch-time standards - the salmon belly and minced tuna sushi were particularly good. Coffee was ok. Overall speaking, although this set offered little surprises, still all the items were of reasonably high standard, and at ~$100 per set, it was definitely good value for money in our opinion
If the sushi set was good, then the Kichi special bento set was even better. Miso soup was the same as the other set and of high standard. Egg rolls were ok. The appetizers were the marinated burdock with carrots and the cold Japanese style pasta, both of which were refreshing and tasty. The cold tofu was also nicely done, served chilled with bonito flakes and a sweet soy sauce. But the true highlight of the set must be the grilled Japanese mackerel, which was cooked just right with cripsy skin and tender, juicy meat, being served with freshly grated daikon, and of course, well-cooked Japanese rice - a simply irresistable combination ! (Actually for this set, you could also choose fermented yellow beans and fried vegetables, instead of the tofu and fish.) Dessert was sesame ice cream which was fine. At ~$70 per set, the standard of the set was very high indeed.
My only negative comment for this place was for the service, which was quite lacking at times. Apparently some of the wait staff were just trainees and they were not adequately supervised. No one seemed to bother to refill our tea, and the bill arrived only after repeated prompting. Wish they could improve on this bit ... ...
Overall speaking a most enjoyable meal. We noticed that most of the items on the menu were not terribly expensive; perhaps this would give us the excuse to come back again to try the other items.
Came here for a friend's bday dinner, so the 8 of us came and was seated at a 卡位table, but the light was fierce and was shining in one of the girl's eyes, and also the air conditioning was dripping and so we requested to sit at another table in the middle, closer to the sushi counter.
We ordered the sushi set (fresh), some sashimi (fresh, but not a bit on the small side), make and temaki (nicely rolled, but not that special), salad (tiny portion), stir fried udon (oily), assorted tempura (ok), clams soup (only enough for one person), and some other dishes I forgot. Overall the food isn't bad, just that you don't feel it's worth the money, and the service was quite disastrous, you can hear the chinese waitresses chatting loudly to themselves, kidding around, "fu heen" you when you wave at them, and the japenese waitress in kimonos only spoke to the japanese clients... bowed 90 degrees and kept saying "arigato" until the client is well out of the restaurant...
I guess if you're japanese, you would enjoy it here, but watch out for dripping air conditioners. Loads of better choices around TST for this price

唔知係咪lunch time只有lunch set,無main menu!?
~DELICIOUS~

Good food, bad service

1. 三文魚刺身- 非常新鮮美味, 水準之上;
2. 壽司拼盆- 材料新鮮, 水準之上;
3. 炒烏冬- 烏冬'煙', 不過醬料太咸;
4. 涼菜一碟- 菜係凍的, 不過我地都係志在有菜食;
5. 天婦羅- 仍然係新鮮的材料, 水準之上;
先Happy Hour 一下, 然後先返屋企. 不過置身如此場地, 我地幾個女仔, 都有少少格格不入;
2. 可能因為全場大部人都係飲啤酒, 侍應們成日都唔加茶;
師傅見到, 會幫你叫侍應;
feel.

個湯真係飲都唔好飲, 味精到暈;
個salad唔錯, d青瓜脆卜卜的;
個飯加左雞肉炒, 份量都幾大;
