We arrived at Banmoto at 7pm on a Friday night and there was surprisingly no queue! We were greeted by an extremely friendly waiter who spoke English well. Although I have eaten at these local buffet type restaurants a lot in the past, the waiter took the time to explain how everything works and helped us to feel comfortable. It was really very nice of him considering it was busy. Our table was quite small and close to the other tables but not so much that it was uncomfortable. They had English
They had English text adjacent to the Chinese characters on the order cards which made it very convenient to order. The translation was also accurate which means we didn't have to take a gamble each time we ordered (though that can be quite an amusing way to experiment with new dishes!). The service was impeccable for this type of busy buffet restaurant. Our drinks came promptly right after we ordered them and the good started to come shortly after.
The ordering system is very well set up at this restaurant and there is good communication between the floor staff and kitchen staff, so you actually get everything you order and it's delivered promptly.
The quality of sashimi was very good for the price which was surprising. I only eat salmon, tuna and kingfish so I will be commenting on the quality of these items only. The fish was served on ice and of fresh quality and the taste was very good. The pieces were well sliced so they were palatable and not too thick. I was most impressed by the quality of the tuna as I have not been impressed by tuna in hong Kong compared to the quality in Australia. It wasn't top quality, but very good for the price you pay.
The sushi was of average quality. The rice to fish ratio could have been better as I found there was too much rice and not enough fish. However, I did enjoy the fatty salmon nigiri which stood out above the other items. The softshell crab in the hand roll was cold and not made to order. This is understandable in this sort of busy environment, however, it did mean that it didn't taste as fresh.
I ordered mostly seafood seafood such as salmon head, grilled octopus and clams in sake.all items came out hot and fresh and had delicate flavours which complimented the seafood.
At some of these buffet type restaurants they seem to conveniently run out of most items (generally the good stuff) and don't bother to inform you so you're left sitting there and wondering where your dishes are. The confusion is frustrating and makes it so complicated for us as it's always already difficult enough to eat local in terms of communication and expectations. So I was really pleased to see such friendly staff and it was much appreciated.
I think Banmoto relies on regular customers and I would definitely go back after such friendly service and quality food.
