After visiting the Hong Kong Wetland Park, we came to this Cantonese restaurant Tai Wing Wah in Yuen Long. This restaurant is very famous among the area, very traditional and provides homie kind of food. Recommended by their waitress, we ordered the five tastes chicken, lard with rice, braised winter melon with pork and bean curd, fried prawns with chenpi and douchi, lastly we have steamed Ma La Gou as our dessert.
Five tastes chicken, chicken it self is marinated in their homemade soy sauce and five spices - Sichuan pepper, star anise, tangerine peel, Cinnamon and black cardamom. They taste like normal Cantonese soy chicken, but a bit different, they doesnt have the chinese medicine ingredients in it. Chicken itself is very juicy and tender, you would want to eat it again and again.

For the healthy conscious people wont love this place I must say. They have the best Lard with Rice here, and it is the best rice ever. This is Tai Wing Wah's signature dish. They come in with a bowl of plain white rice, and two bottles. One with the extra premium soy sauce and one with the oil. We were told by the waitress, we need to put a half spoon of each to mix with. OH MY GOD, this was delicious.
Winter melon with pork and bean curd. This dish was okay, personally i like winter melon a lot, thats why we ordered. The pork was a bit too fat. The bean curd and the winter melon have absorb all the flavors from the pork and spices. This dish feels really soggy, so it depends on your personal taste.
Fried prawns with sun-dried tangerine peel and fermented black soybean. The shells of the prawns are crispy, you can swallow it. This dish taste very nice with all these traditional Chinese spices.
For the dessert, this is their steamed sponge cake called Ma La Gou. It comes with eight pieces of them, so please consider if you will be able to finish it or not before ordering. It is very airy and sweet, layered with Chinese style custard. Please noted that most of the Chinese desserts contains lard.
For the portion and price, Tai Wing Wah were good value for money! Their dishes are quite greasy but i think they taste good. So please enjoy your trip to Tai Wing Wah for the traditional Chinese food. Better check if they have tables before you come, I have heard it's not easy to get a table here. Just that we came here at 5pm, so that we got the seat without a problem.
