小南國 (中環) is located in the heart of Central. The interior is elegant and modern, high ceiling and table are fairly spaced. It severs great traditional Shanghaiese cuisine. The staffs are welcoming are friendly, it’s a full house during the lunch hour, the results speak for its quality! 小黄鱼 (5/10)
The fish was perfectly fried, crispy on the outside, soft and juicy the inside. Greatly seasoned with salt and pepper, the fish was fresh and sweet.
山煎包 (5/10)The bun was very nicely made, slightly sweet, spongy and wasn’t too thick. The bottom was fried nicely, very crispy and the filling was finely marinated with great flavour. As soon as you gave the bun a first bite, the flavour just burst out, absolutely wonderful.
津白 (4/10)The vege was fresh, and it was soft – not over cooked – great colour. The flavour was sweet and delicate. It was a light dish to pair with the strong flavour of Shanghaiese cuisine.
四喜烤麸 (4/10)The 烤麸was spongy, steamed well. The 面筋has washed away and there weren’t any 豆腥味, a great combination of 云耳 and green beans to decorate the dish.
小笼包 (3/10)The skins were slightly too thick and sticky. The soup could be warmer, but the flavour itself was just about right. The filling was marinated nicely.
担担面 (4/10)The noodles were “al dente”. However, I prefer a thick soup base and either spicy or sweet (peanut butter flavour), the one at 小南国 was in between.
If you are craving for Shanghaiese food, I think 小南国 is the perfect chain restaurant for you to visit, great food and services with reasonable price. More importantly, the food is very traditional and the décor of the dining rooms will never disappoint you with its class. Give me a thumbs up if you like it!
