HUNGER – surprisingly one of the biggest problems in HK. From unlimited “All-you-can-eat” buffets to 24hour restaurants, it seems almost impossible that anyone could go hungry in this food-oriented city. 3,200 tons of food waste is produced every day, yet 20% of Hong Kong still lives in poverty. Realizing this problem, many organizations such as Food Angel acted on it, being the key medium between wasted (edible) food and beneficiaries.

Founded in 2009 as a registered charitable organization, the Bo Charity Foundation started its first food recycle and assistance initiative “Food Angel” in 2011 with the ultimate goals to: Reduce Food Waste at Source, Alleviate Hunger, Relieve Poverty and Educate the Next Generation.

They strive to accomplish missions through their food assistance programs, central kitchen, food collection and distribution fleet, community outreach services, educational programs and volunteer team.

Today, they serve over 2,000 nutritious hot meals daily to those who are in need of food assistance and rescue 1,000 kg surplus food per day from going into our landfills.

As many of you know, OpenRice is Asia’s largest dining platform. Ever since we learnt about unequal food distribution in HK, we thought it was absolutely necessary to contribute in any form possible.

We chose Transportation as one of them. This month, OpenRice has given Food Angel 2 freezer trucks to keep the food fresh and increase the scale of distribution.

Secondly, using the OpenRice platform. It is inevitable that restaurants and bakeries produce waste every day. However, we believe in using our portal to connect users, restaurants and similar organizations like Food Angel, and of course- raising awareness for this devastating problem.
