We came to Shanghai Min with a craving for some of our Shanghainese favourites and got a pretty decent attempt at them.

We arrived and were seated straight away (it was lunchtime).  We had an incredible view across the harbour and the service was very polite.  We were given a choice of tea and told it was free, along with some small snack plates of peanuts and pickles.  Lo and behold, we later found that these were not free and were charged for them.  We argued about the tea, as we were specifically told it was free, and it was taken off the bill.  I have a bit of a problem with having snack items put on the table without our consultation and then being charged for them - it is a nonsense that shouldn't happen.

Anyway, we ordered some xiaolongbao, shengjianbao, green beans and Shanghainese minced pork stuffed puffs.

The minced pork came first and was not bad.  The flavours were good, although the puffs in which you put the mince had zero integrity and broke up into little pieces after the first bite.

The beans were great.  In fact they might have been the best I have eaten of that variety.  The meat was seasoned well, but allowed the green beans to be the star.

The xiaolong bao were very good.  In fact, I would say that they were the best that I have eaten in Hong Kong.  They still were not as good as in Shanghai, but they were close.  Big thumbs up.

The shegjianbao tasted good too, but the bread was a little thick for my liking.  The flavours were almost bang on, so I forgave them the bread.

The nibbles debacle aside, we were very impressed with Shanghai Min.  The price is not cheap, but you get what you pay for and we ended up with a very good meal.

We were looking for options in Fanling and just when we were at our wits end, this place popped up.  After eating there, we left happy and full.

In Hong Kong, Singaporean/Malaysian places tend to be a little upmarket, or not very good.  Enter Banana Leaf.  This place is good and reasonablely priced.

We opted for roti canai, Singapore noodles (ok, I know that they are not really Singaporean!), Pakistani mutton curry and two milk teas.

SO - roti - made fresh, before our very eyes.  The chef was throwing the dough about like a seasoned pro.  When they came, they were substantial, crispy and chewy.  Just like you would get in a kedai kopi in Malaysia or a kopitiam in Singapore.  The curry sauce was awesome - so rich and delicious (but  more about that later).

The Singapore noodles were good too.  More curry-like than normal.  Thy were delicious and well seasoned.

The Mutton curry was in the same curry sauce that accompanied our roti.  The mutton was a little tough in places, but acceptable.  We completely forgave them due to the sauce.  Incredible.  I wanted to lick the bowl.  Rich, sweet, savoury, thick, well spiced.  I would have eaten a bucket of it.  WOW.

The teas were Hong Kong tasting, but pulled like a teh tarik is in Malaysia/Singapore.  They were fine.

So - go here if you are in Fanling.  It is a great place with decent staff, a good chef and great food.  Prices are good too.

We used to live in Chile and eat a lot of Peruvian food.  Having visited friends in Peru, we came to love it and crave it from time to time.

We visited Chicha during restaurant week and took advantage of their lunchtime menu.  We received a mixed meal with highlights and disappointments.

First we opted for a tuna causa.  Causa is a typical Peruvian dish made of mashed potato anda variety of potential toppings.  This one had some avocado and tuna tartare on top, garnished with tobiko.  It was really good.  If I hadrecieved in in Peru, I would be just as pleased as I was in Hong Kong.  Creamy and bright - it really satisfied on many levels.

The restaurant then gave us a surprise free dish of mini pork sliders with a sauce made from aji amarillo (a yellow pepper native to South America).  They were lovely little bites.  A little 'porky' tasting for some people, but I loved them.

The mains were a little disappointing.  A bit boring really.  I had the pollo a la brasa (grilled chicken).  It was nothing special.  The yellow potatoes were pleasant, as was the chicken (if a little over done and dry).  The tomatoes were meant to be 'fiery' with rocoto (a wonderful red pepper from Peru).  I did not detect this element and neither did my wife.  She opted for the corvina (sea bass).  The leche de tigre (liquid from ceviche) was not hugely present and the plantain, while nice and sweet, added very little to the composition of the dish.  It was another pleasant, but boring main.

The dessert, however, made us very happy.  Picarones are similar to doughnuts and one of them was served for dessert.  This one was not that special (a little dense), but the ice cream was sensational.  It transported me into a special place.  Really - it was incredible.  It was made of manjar blanco.  Manjar is also known as dulce de leche in Argentina or cajeta in Mexico.  It is made by boiling down and reducing condensed milk to makea caramel-like substance that is fantastic.  Addictive stuff.  Anyway, they had made ice cream from a light version of it (hence blanco - white).  So good.  I would have eaten a bucket of it and asked for more.

So you can see it was a mixed meal.  Some great elements and some not so great.  All in all the good outweighed the mediocre.

We had been wanting to try FINDS for a long time and we finallygot the chance when we went there for our wedding anniversary lunch.

The place does Scandinavian (Nordic) food.  I am the first to admit that this is not an area of expertise for me, but we had a great meal and would definitely return.

We were seated and immediately given menus - our server was very good and efficient.  We both went for the signature lunch menu with free-flow drinks.  We both ordered the famous salmon six ways, I then opted for the beetroot risotto and my wife chose the Swedish meatballs.  We also both decided to have the dessert: Daim parfait.

First we had a glass of prosecco and awaited the salmon.  When it came, it was a feast for the eyes.  Beautifully, yet simply presented with a nice progression through various techniques.  We were told to start with the gravadlax and then proceed as we wished.  The gravadlax was very nice.  Beets were used in the cure, so the the translucent fish had a nice pink edge.  It was very nice served with a dill and mustard sauce.  We then went on to the salt and pepper slamon.  The barely cured fish was wonderfully textured and the salt and pepper played against the smooth avacado puree and crunch of radish.  Then was the pickled salmon.  I have never eaten salmon pickled before, but it was delicious.  The salmon came through the pickling process and was not lost.  The cold smoked salmon was next and it was delightful.  The salmon roe was a light and salty treat that popped nicely between the teeth.  Finally, the salmon mouse was really nice.  served with a crisp black bread, it was soft, but had texture and moist, but not wet.  It was not over worked and kept its integrity.

After being poured a glass of red, our mains arrived.  The beetroot risotto was warming and earthy.  It had an incredible colour and the little treats of feta and pickles cut through the richness of the rice and added extra flavour layers.  The bright green of the Romanesco broccoli on the red of the risotto was eye-catching.

The meatballs were sensational.  Served on some of the butteriest mashed potatoes ever, the smokiness of bacon came through the juicy and satisfying meatballs.  The gravy was rich and heart-warming and the lingonberry compote sent it over the edge.  It was a triumph and screamed elegant comfort.

The final dish of the day was the daim parfait.  To those who have not lived in Europe, daim bars are a king of hard caramel chocolate bar.  The dessert here does not use actual daim bars, but it plays off thei flavours - spectacularly so.  The parfaits were rolled in a crumb and served with a caramel sauce and a chocolate sauce.  The freeze-dried raspberry crunchy stuff was incredible.  It was a plate full of different tastes and textures that came together as a whole to invoke that European childhood classic.

Basically, this place is really good and the executive chef, Jaakko Sorsa, is very enthusiastic about what he does.  He came out to talk with us after out meal and spoke about his work.  FINDS is a one-of-a-kind in Hong Kong and it is a great find.  I have recommended it to all of my friends, colleagues and clients and I do so again now.  It is great.  We would not hesitate to return and try more of their great dishes - perhaps the scapas.

This busy little CB eatery is well worth investigating if you like Sichuan food.

We came here expecting not too much, but were very happy with our food.  We ordered dan dan mien, spicy potato noodles and spicy Chengdu dumplings.

The dan dan mien came first and was lovely.  The dish came out in a very pretty arrangement and after mixing in the spicy sticky pork mince and sauce, the noodles became totally coated in a thick, stickiness.  They satisfied in taste and texture.  They didn't use too much hua jiao (Sichuan peppercorns), so my tongue didn't do totally numb.  Many places get the balance of numb to spicy so wrong.

The spicy sour potato noodles were good too.  The broth hadmore hua jiao, but the peanuts and soy beans in there gave it a good toothiness that countered the chewy slippery noodles.
The dumplings were nice too.  They were spicy, but not too much so and had a nice pork and chili taste to them.  I would order them again.

We will return as the food is good and the prices are low.  The two of us ate for a little over $100.  The service was friendly and efficient and we left happy, but quickly, as a line was forming at the door.
