小澤日本料理 (中環)

I saw the reviews on this little jap diner and was so attracted by the lunch set menu so I came to give it a go

There were two of us and we ordered a 3-item-set each. Here are some photos:

First item: The sashimi rice was made up of salmon and hamachi pieces. The proportion of sashimi and rice are just right. The sashimi was of decent quality considering the price, but obviously didn't impress particularly. 

As each of us gets 3 items, it's enough for a petite girl like me. However 3 of these added up might not be enough to fill up a bigger guy's stomach. 


Second item: scallop sashimi with homemade(?) spicy sauce on rice 
I was looking forward to this a lot, however the sauce just simply didn't deliver. It was too strong, and its acidity was too overwhelming to bring out the freshness and sweetness of the scallops. The two didn't go well tgt. However the portion was satisfying and the scallops were of decent quality. 


Third item: 
This was definitely the best out of the 6 we ordered. The salmon were grilled perfectly on the surface and the inside remain only half cooked, giving the fish a nice char-grilled taste while keeping the texture soft. It goes really well with the rice and they served generous portions of the salmon. 👍


Fourth item: 
Unagi on rice
This was pretty good too and the sauce was lovely. But there were only 2 small pieces and I wanted more. Enough said.

Fifth item: fried shrimp rolls
These were just ordinary and unseasoned, hence lacked flavour. I'd have preferred those form Genki. 

Sixth item: chicken teriyaki 
These were good and they gave us chicken thighs which were succulent and tender. The flavour was what you'd expect of chicken teryaki. Generally happy with this dish. 

They also served miso soup and a scoop of ice cream which are included in the set. Both were satisfactory. The sesame ice cream I ordered was a delight, while the green tea ice cream was a disappointment so I wouldn't recommend it. 

The space was tiny and could hold 10-12 ppl at most so it's not a place where you'd stay for too long. Each set costs HKD$100.00 with no service charge required. This is a better deal  
than anyone could ask for a jap lunch in central district, considering the quality! 

Conclusion:  If you're looking for high quality stuff, this isn't the place to go. however, it's a SUPER GOOD DEAL and is a place to consider when you feel like trying out tons of different stuff all in one set at pa low price.

Big John (尖沙咀)

Big john's waffles have always been my 'to try' list and I decided today was the day to try it out! 

The madam at the reception wasn't very friendly. But again, what do you expect from a little shop in hk right? I ordered a waffles to take away, and she told me it costs HKD$26.00. I was like 'what??' With 26 dollars I could get a lot more so then she asked if I wanted a small portion so I went with it and paid HKD13.00, which is fair for a normal HK style waffle. 

But then it was ready and i was 'stunned' 


I'm quite generous when it comes to spending on food but this is pushing it a little I thought. I had a bite. To be fair it tasted alright. A bit too chewy to my liking though. Anyway with that price I could have gotten a lot better and I'm genuinely disappointed. Maybe its waffle isn't exactly the signature dish. 

In conclusion I wouldn't pay this shop a visit again, and there are many other better choices for HK style waffles.

Odelice! (灣仔)

After failed attempts in seeking new restaurants to try out in wanchai, as all the targets were fully booked on a busy Friday night, my friend and I found ourselves exhausted and stopped at O Delice. 

The space was tiny but cozy, though only half full on a Friday night. 



The salad was just average and you wouldn't miss out on anything not ordering it. 



The spaghetti carbonara didn't particularly appeal to the eyes, but it was well cooked to al dente, and the carbonara sauce was rich without being too heavy. We happily finished all of it 👍



The waffle was a very pleasant surprise  a perfect crisp on the outside and fluffy on the inside with a rich egg and butter flavour, topped with a nice scoop of vanilla ice cream (which I can assure you that isn't from some cheap brand, but rather creamy and rich in milk), fresh and sweet strawberries, as well as a nice caramel sauce. It was so delicious and is definitely something I would come back for again  
 
By the end of dinner I grew very fond of not only the food, but also the ambience. The service was great and the staff were friendly and efficient. 
Overall it's been a lovely dining experience and I was very glad all other places were booked up that night! 

Hungry Korean (尖沙咀)

Hmm I've been here quite a few times but the last time I visited was more than half a year ago. I've always been impressed by the bim bap here so I decided to come back for a massive lunch  

There were just two of us and we ordered 4 dishes in total. The Korean rice cakes were pretty good, chewy and not overcooked, and the sauce had a nice flavour with a touch of spice and sweetness  
The stone pot rice had a range of fresh veggies along with some marinated beef. The good thing abt this dish is that it doesn't taste of MSG, and they were very thoughtful to provide chilli sauce on the side and you could add it to your liking

We also ordered bim bap with squid and soft tofu soup with rice. The bim bap was nice, but definitely not as good as I remembered and they've cut down on the squid so I was quite disappointed. The soft tofu soup isn't quite worth the mention and it's not something I would order again as I can make better ones lol

Overall it's a cheap meal ($148 for 4 dishes) with reasonable quality, especially considering the price an I'd come back again, though not in a hurry

川善茶居 (上環)

Prompted by the positive reviews on openrice I finally paid this place a visit  I was lucky as only 3 tables were occupied when I arrived. It was a tiny space, but a nice and cozy one. 

A lady took my order, and I went for the toffee and banana cake. 20 minutes passed by and there was no sign of my pudding. I thought to myself 'perhaps they're famous for making their puddings from scratch or that they bake it after the order so they're nice and fresh'. I gave it another 5 minutes, and when it was still nowhere to be seen, I asked the lady to follow up on my order. Surely it wasn't too much of a request with less than 6 people in the house. 

She paused, then said 'I'll check again'. Then she walked towards the display counter, took a slice of toffee banana cake, then put it into the microwave. I saw the entire process and was left utterly stunned. I then confronted her 'did you just slip my pudding into the microwave'. 

She stared at me and hesitated, then said 'no'. Nobody else in the cafe ordered the same pudding, and the cafe was simply too tiny that it was obvious she was lying to my face. A minute later, she took the pudding out, put a scoop of ice cream on it, then offered me this exact same piece of cake she slided into the microwave, and charged me $40 for it. 
 

Absolutely outrageous. And even if I weren't ballistic about the entire incident, it was genuinely a piece of cake that did not impress by a single bit, and definitely wasn't worth its price, let alone a 20-minute wait, especially when they served it 'fresh' from a microwave. The worst thing was the waitress lied, gave no apology, and did absolutely nothing about it. I wouldn't consider a second visit, and in fact, I'm urging everyone not to come at all. It's an absolute waste of time, and for the price they charge you, there are many other places that offer better food and service.
