We were walking around looking for a place for a quick late breakfast on Sunday and most of our potential places were either still closed at 10 a.m. or the lines were already long.  We happened to pass by Xi Zhan near Hysan Place and the waitress standing outside the door beckoned us in.
It was quite full but there was an empty table that seemed to be waiting for us so we decided to stay.
Since it was too early for the regular menu, we had to order from the breakfast set.
The food came very quickly and although the fried pork chop was tender and seasoned, the accompanying beef noodle soup lacked flavor.
But the service was quite efficient and friendly and perhaps I'll come back next time to try their real signature dish -- according to their menu, the best seller is their fish ball noodle soup.

I went hiking through Tai Lam country park and the only thing that got me through the long walk was the thought of a good meal at the end.
The roast goose at Fu Kee in Sham Tseng did not disappoint.  And the bottle of ice cold beer helped a lot too.
The goose seemed freshly roasted, it was still quite warm.  We ordered the smallest portion which still was too much for just 2 people.  The goose was plump and satiny from the oil but a bowl of warm rice was the right foil to cut through the grease.
Service was quick and with a smile.

Friday night dinner at West Villa on the 5th level of Lee Gardens.  Why have I not discovered this place before?  The barbecue pork, which was a house specialty, was really succulent -- soft and juicy unlike in other roast meat places where the char siew can be too tough and chewy.  This was just melt-in-your-mouth good.  I want to come back for brunch and try their dimsum next time I'm in Hong Kong!  
The service was also professional,  efficient and helpful, despite the full house and despite the fact that I don't speak chinese.

My friends and I had an early dinner at Ho Hung Kee at Hysan Place.  It's great, hearty food in rather cool and refined surroundings.  I was just surprised that their bowl of wonton noodles was so bland and insipid, specially since I had read that these noodles had merited 1 Michelin star.  But the rest of the food that we ordered was just so good -- will make sure to come back next time!

My friend took us to this vegetarian restaurant where you need a membership card to be able to dine in.
We went for dinner and the place was quite full
We wanted to order a la carte but was told that only set menus where available.
The food was well presented and not oily (as you normally get in most regular chinese vegetarian restaurants, everything seems to be swimming in oil)  and for non vegetarians like my 2 friends, it was a tasty alternative to eating meat.
The meal started with soy spiced meat and crisp seaweed crackers.  Very good!  The soy meat tasted much like pork sheets!
Next up was a tray of sushi, again, all vegetarian and very well made and presented.
Along with the sushi were small plates of other appetizers like steamed okra, really yummy tart tomatoes, spicy seaweed and tofu slices.
A small plate of three pieces of a cheese and mushroom pastry followed, this was delicious and the puff pastry was done very well.  Then each of us got a small dish with a steamed daikon topped with grated crunchy taro, light and easy to eat.
A clear mushroom broth helped cleanse the palate.
The main dish was a platter of mock chicken, cooked the chinese way.  It was a bit dry but otherwise the right flavors were there. A dish of stewed pumpkin served with goji berries was healthy and at the same time, very tasty.  We also got a mixed vegetable stir fry and then, fried rice with mushroom bits that was very good, we ate the entire serving!There were two desserts to round out the meal -- a small cup of sesame flavored tofu, which I really liked and an apple crumble.  Which was not the best part of the whole meal.
There is a small vegetarian grocery which sells ingredients, the aforementioned soy meats and even frozen foods, vitamins, supplements right outside the restaurant.  If you want to continue the vegetarian lifestyle, this is a good place to get started!

You find the best tasting food in some of the most unlikely places.
My friend brought me to this small old style restaurant near Choi Hung where the dimsum was just so good!
We came for lunch and had hakaw, spare rib rice, siumai and char siew bao.  
I also added an order of a type of dimsum wrapped in yuba skin.
Everything was just perfect!
My usual standard for a really good dimsum place is if the steamed spare rib rice is done well. In this restaurant, the spare rib rice was excellent.  The spare rib bits were tender and very tasty.  I saw other diners putting soy sauce but I felt the taste was just right and didn't need extra seasoning.
I don't speak Chinese but the wait staff were attentive and you just go and point out your orders. 
I just wish the beer choices were better but we had 2 bottles of Skor which was not all that bad.
I hope I can come back to this place next time I am in Hongkong -- I just have to make sure I can find my way back!

Hong Kong is the perfect place to explore and discover small eating places where you can find outstanding food at unbelievably low prices.
I had passed by this shop many times in Causeway Bay since it's so near the J Plus hotel where I stay but tried it only on this visit.
I could not resist the rice rolls that are freshly made right at the shop's store front.
The place was full when I walked in but they quickly gave me a seat at a table that I shared with 3 other diners.
Aside from the rice roll, I also ordered their xiao long bao, five pieces to an order. It came very hot and I nearly burnt my tongue when I bit into the first one.
While the rice roll was delicious, it was the dumplings that were a revelation.  I didn't quite expect the quality to be so high.  So delicious and freshly made.  The "soup" was just excellent!My rice roll and the xiao long bao was under $50 but the satisfaction was ten times that!

Poutine is a Canadian dish that is made of french fries dipped in gravy and smothered with cheese curds.  Which means it tastes great but has more calories than just plain fries.
Who would have thought that I would find a great version in Hong Kong, of all places?  Triple O's offers poutine.  It tastes quite authentic and holds up well even when it gets cold. I also tried the vegetarian burger and was pleasantly surprised that it was tasty and not the usual bland, cardboard tasting product.

I came to this place after a hike through the Hong Kong Trail and the cold bottle of Tsingtao beer was just the thing to quench my thirst.  We ordered two kinds of dumplings - the xiao long bao and the wo tip or fried dumplings.  Both were very good but I liked the fried dumplings just a bit better.  Both dumplings were made just as we ordered them so they tasted very fresh. The right blend of meat and vegetables and seasoning -- not too salty or bland.  The place is definitely popular with the neighborhood as there were lots of regulars who were having lunch.  Service was friendly and smiling, even if I did not speak Chinese!

Extremely good dim sum at this small place in Sheung Wan!  We ordered the baked char siew buns, quite different from the usual kind because the pastry is a bit flaky and slightly sweet!  This makes a good counterpoint to the very savory char siew filling.  The har gao and the shiu mai were also very good, very fresh shrimp and the wrapper for the har gao was not too thick.
