Very rare to go to the northern district, yet due to today's gathering with two former colleagues, I went to sheung shui and randomly selected a small Japanese restaurant for dinner.
It is located at the middle of Lung Sum Avenue which is near to the heart of town with a fairly high traffic outside.
The restaurant isn't very big with my estimation of approximately 1000 sq feet having about 30-40 seats in total. Internal environment is decorated with a traditional Japanese style being like a little Japan.
As a super-fan of coffee, the first thing that I was gonna do was to orde a cup of hot coffee
($18) even in a Japanese restaurant. This is an "order-to-make" ground coffee served with milk (
optional) which has a
medium-to-high standard that made me suprised at a price of only $18 HKD.
The coffee smells quite good with light coffee smell and is easy to drink without any bitter flavour, yet could be a bit stronger in flavour in my opinion.
Foie gras (鵝肝) is clamped by two pieces of white radishes (白蘿蔔), and a black mushroom is on top of that. The foie gras itself tastes very
juicy and
rich in which I am recommended to eat all three ingredients at once to reduce the oily feeling caused by the meaty foie gras because white radishes absorb very much of that. This is a nice appetiser to get my stomach ready
This Miso Soup is cooked with
jumbo shrimps, mushroom, tofu, vegetable, etc which can serve about 2-3 ppl. There is no big difference with the miso soup provided by other restaurant, while strictly speaking, it is a bit
fresher and sweeter than the ordinary and more importantly, it wouldn't make me feel thirsty after drink
This Sashimi was ordered by many customers probably because it is bundled into most dinner sets. Though it has about 12 slides only, it comes into a 300 HKD dinner set as appetiser which is quite
economical compared with other Japanese restaurant as far as I am concerned. The fish is
bright and very much transparent under the lighting giving me a great perception before eating it. It is
extremely fresh in which I
couldn't see any fishy taste even without adding any seasoning on it. It is served with a special sour sauce (vinegar+lemon) which I think it is just optional and not that necessary. Honestly, it might be one of the best dishes available in here I think
I am not gonna say that much for these as the overall taste doesn't impress me to be honest. I would say it is normal, yet the chicken skewer in the middle is very much tasteless which I think we shouldn't have ordered it...indeed.......
Eel fried rice (日式鰻魚炒飯) is delicious which the overall presentation and taste exceed my prior expectation. One highly appreciated thing is that there is
a lot thick-cut eel letting me think it is
fairly inexpensive. The eel is
fresh and it matches with the fired rice as a whole. However, the
rice is a bit too wet that is stuck together at some points which leaves room for improvement
