Back at Amber for its Weekend Wine Lunch! I have been here for its weekday lunches, so I was excited to try its wine pairing which features boutique wines and exclusive vintages from around the world that are not normally available in Hong Kong. The cost of the weekend lunch is priced at $888 for 6 courses of food and 4 glasses of wine pairing which is guaranteed to be a feast. Oh and congratulations to Amber for making the World's 50 Best Restaurants list again at #38 this year!

Since it was summer, we were served a series of amuse bouche around the theme of tomato and fennel. The first was a gorgeous cup that contained an appetizing tomato water which reminded me of the a similar dish at NUR. I loved the playful presentation of the tomato-shaped pita bread with fennel puree filling and seaweed stem on top of the cup.

Next up was a deep-fried ravioli with basil and fennel puree filling presented on a wooden bark and moss carpet.

The last of the trio was a fennel macaron with tomato puree filling and Bloody Mary tart in the shape of cherry tomato.

The Boops Boops Fish was light cured and smoked in watermelon juice and served with coriander puree. The texture of the fish was similar to regular smoked salmon while it had a smoky flavor that was nicely balanced by the acidic sauces.

Of course we had to order the ever classic Hokkaido Sea Urchin served in a lobster jello with cauliflower, caviar and crispy seaweed waffles.

The Australian Abalone was served with a black pepper and vinegar seasoned tomato compote along with braised then crisped oxtail and its jus. The abalone was very soft and tender but I felt that the sauce was a bit overwhelming.

Prized for its fruity and delicate flavors, the Girolles is a wild mushroom in season now and was simmered in 'vin jaune' with poached Taiyouran egg, green garden pea puree and charred onion shells.

Served with roasted golden turnips puree, roasted figs in banyuls jus and baby daikon with torroro kombu, the Dupont Duck was rich and juicy while I wished the skin could have been crispier.

The Line Caught Red Mullet was beautiful as it had been seared on the skin and served with its pan juices, semolina gnocchi, raw violin zucchini, orange dust and sea urchin rouille.

Before our dessert courses, we were served 5 types of French unpasteurized cheese with sourdough bread.

The first of our dessert was this Yellow Peach which had been poached in sake, citrus, nectarine cream marigold petals while topped with sake lees ice cream and rice crispy. The dessert was refreshing to eat especially in this hot summer weather!

The decadent Raspberry sorbet with alpaco chocolate cremeux, hibiscus and black currant gel was very delightful to eat as the chocolate cream was quite light and not too sweet.

To wrap up our meal, we were served a 3-tier petit fours with coffee or tea of our choice. Similar to my last experience, this was the most disappointing aspect of our meal as the petit fours were too sweet and not impressive at all.

Verdict - Amber never fails to dazzle and with its outstanding food and wine, the Weekend Wine Lunch is a fabulous way to spend the weekend!

I've been wanting to try this restaurant for a while now ever since I saw pictures of it on my social media feed with its food art plating that looks almost too pretty to eat yet I wasn't sure if it is just all looks and gimmicks, but luckily the food here turned out to be not only gorgeous but also well-executed along with superb service and surroundings. Located near the Convention Center, Empire City Huaiyang serves high-end Chinese cuisine - specially Huaiyang cuisine which is one of the Four Great Traditions that dominate the culinary heritage of China. I haven't been to its sister restaurant Empire City Roasted Duck in K11 but both restaurants seems to pride themselves of their signature roasted Peking duck.

The restaurant was expansive and spacious with traditional and modern touches along with generous spacing between tables unlike most Chinese restaurants. Private rooms are also available for parties and privacy but I felt that the main dining room offered plenty of peace and quietness already.

Real ducks were being roasted with lychee wood on display towards the back of the restaurant.

We started off our meal by ordering some White Peony Supreme ($20 per person) as our tea which arrived in a beautiful metal pot with double walled cups. The white tea was aromatic with a fresh and sweet taste that was pleasant to drink through the entire meal.

Fresh fruits were given to us as refreshments before our food arrived.

Baked Turnip Pastry ($60/3 pcs) - our swans were anything but a Swan Lake tragedy as they were beautifully crafted and tasted just as good as they looked!

Mushroom Bun in Mushroom Shape ($98/4 pcs) - these cute buns that looks like a mushroom were really pleasant to eat with its fluffy soft texture and delicious pork filling.

Onto the star of the night - the signature roasted Peking duck available in 3 flavors:

Traditional Roasted Peking Duck ($235 Half/$468 Whole)

Roasted Peking Duck with Crystal Duck Foie Gras ($345 Half/$688 Whole)

Roasted Peking Duck with Caviar ($495 Half/$988 Whole)

You have to order half portion at a minimum which equates to about 8 pieces only and if you order the most expensive option which is the Caviar, you can choose to mix and match with the foie gras if you like to try both flavors.

The Peking duck was carved and prepared in front of us.

We ended up getting half caviar and half foie gras which arrived between layers of crispy duck skin, duck meat, fluffy bun and cucumber. The foie gras had a layer of apple jelly that was quite tart in flavor which I felt stole the attention away from the duck while the saltiness of the caviar complimented the dish better. Overall, the Peking duck was of very high quality and not fatty at all.

To be honest, I felt that the price was quite steep for the portion but it was interesting to try these unique combinations for the first time. I wouldn't say they didn't work but they also didn't elevate the flavor of the duck to a higher level so I would just stick with the original next time.

Stir-fried Minced Duck Meat with Pine Nut and Conpoy ($60 Half/$120 Whole) - now if you're wondering where the rest of the duck went after it has been skinned for us, we were able to choose from a variety of dishes that can be made of the remnant of the duck. This was highly recommended to us where the minced duck meat had been stir-fried with nuts and chili so it was deliciously spicy. Served with a choice of lettuce or sesame pastry, we opted for the pastry which we filled up with duck meat and ate it like a burrito!

Deep-fried Kurobuta Pork with Iced Fruit and Coral Shape Sugar ($238) - I love sweet and sour pork so I was most excited to try this dish actually! The Kurobuta pork was definitely camera ready as water was poured over the dry ice it was sitting on to create a smoky waterfall effect. Besides its looks, the flavor was on point as well as the pork was crispy and succulent while the iced fruits complimented the pork nicely. I just wasn't so hot on the pieces of pork that got cold from touching the ice though - I think they should separate the ice because the crispy pork is best eaten hot.

Rice Cake Dumpling with Custard in Panda Shape ($60 each) - to round off our meal, we ordered this cute panda dessert which was almost too pretty to eat! This cutie was a rice cake dumpling filled with custard which was yummy as it was like eating a custard bun. The bamboos in the back were edible too as they were cakes with bird's nest jelly inside.

Verdict - I was really impressed with the food here as Empire City Huaiyang demonstrated care and attention to detail with its beautiful "camera eat first" dishes and exquisite flavors. This is the place to take your family, friends, visitors and business guests if you want to dazzle them with Chinese gastronomy!

Located on Old Bailey Street, Fatty Crab comes to us from New York serving Malaysian, Thai, Indonesian, Vietnamese and Singaporean cuisines while using western cooking techniques. I actually brushed shoulders with the original Fatty Crab in NYC but never got to try their food until they opened a branch in HK. The restaurant itself is quite hipster and unpretentious with graffiti concrete walls throughout its bar and main dining room which were both dimly lit, making for a casual ambiance for eating while throwing back a drink or two.

The entrance is at the bar area while the main dining room is located in the next room - I got confused at first when I first arrived at the restaurant because I didn't realize that this bar was part of Fatty Crab as well. Turns out that the drinks here are something to rave about since the cocktail menu was designed by an award winning mixologist in NYC. Along with the food, the drinks here also reflect that SE Asian influence by incorporating ingredients like spices and homemade infusions.

The Vangster ($120) - with tom yom infused vodka, aperol, agave and fresh lime. Yes you read that right - it's a drink that tastes like tom yum soup with a hint of spiciness, sourness and sweetness that actually works as a cocktail. A one-of-a-kind drink that is definitely worth a try here!

Anime Star ($120) - with shochu, sparkling wine, passion fruit, cinnamon vanilla sugar and fresh lime. To be honest, I was more intrigued by the comic more than the drink actually (that naughty crab!) but the cocktail was right up my alley as it was fruity and well-balanced in flavors. I love passion fruit as well!

One thing that differentiates from the NYC branch is the introduction of the raw bar here in HK with daily selections of oysters, razor clams, shrimps, crabs and more!

Daily Selection of Oysters - HK peeps love their oysters so we had to try them which were supposedly from [somewhere in] Canada. I love these kinds of small oysters which tends to be less creamy with a more briny flavor and they reminded me of the Kumamoto oysters from Washington. More interesting was that the oysters were served with green chili sauce as opposed to the usual condiments so you can add a bit of spiciness to your oyster if you'd like.

Laab Moo Scotch Egg ($100) - with soft boiled egg and spicy minced pork wrap. An interesting twist to Scotch eggs by replacing sausage meat with Laab Moo which is a classic Isaan pork dish from Northern Thailand. The spicy pork lent a spicy kick in flavors which was oh-so delicious to eat!

Pork Buns ($60/pc) - with braised pork belly, soft boiled egg, kecap manis and sriracha. These pork belly buns were awesome! With fluffy soft buns and tender pork belly, I couldn't stop putting these into my mouth one after another. Wait you can actually do that with their all you can eat buns special on every Wednesdays for only $120!

Crispy Pork & Watermelon Pickle ($150) - pork belly, thai basil and ginger-lime dressing. I love this pairing of pork belly with watermelon which was refreshing while the pork was awesome as it was perfectly crispy on the outside while tender on the inside!

Kang Kong ($60) - malay water spinach and chili tomato sambal. My favorite veggie dish of the night as it was sweet and spicy!

Smoked Duck Curry ($170) - red curry, thai eggplant, pineapple and grapes. I love duck curry and while I felt that this could have been spicier, the red curry was spot on and perfect for eating with the coconut rice it came with!

Chili Crab - we ended the night with crab of course since this place wouldn't be called Fatty Crab without a crab dish! A signature dish here with a sweet and juicy pacific northwest Dungeness crab soaking in a spicy tomato sauce along with pieces of fluffy pullman toasts. This is a must-have dish especially if you like Dungeness crab like I do but that spicy tomato sauce stole the show for me. It was so good to eat with the toasts that we had to ask for more toasts so we can eat every last drop of it!

Verdict - Fatty Crab is a great place for you to get your grub on especially if you like spicy and innovative South East Asian food and drinks!

ON Dining Kitchen & Lounge is the new restaurant from Chef Philippe Orrico of the newly minted 1 star Upper Modern Bistro, focusing on southern European and Mediterranean flavors. Located on the 28th & 29th floor, the lounge boasts views of Central through its outdoor terrace while the formal dining space is located downstairs. Set lunch is priced at HK$288 for 2 courses or HK$328 for 3 courses - not unreasonable but not cheap either. To be honest, I wasn't that impressed with Upper Modern Bistro when I last visited but perhaps ON will prove me wrong?

I'd prefer the lounge more during the day because it is more airy and bright with the open terrace space compared to the dining room. I also like the retro chic decor and casual vibe of the lounge but the dining room looks bright and modern as well with its white, black and lavender color tones.

The baguette was warm and toasty while the butter was room temperature so both passes the bread test.

Starters

Foie Gras Terrine [3.5/5] - with red fruit chutney and toasts. No surprises here - the terrine tasted as expected while the chutney was a nice compliment with its tart flavors as a contrast to the richness of the foie gras.

Tourteau Crab [3.5/5]- with lobster & tomato salad. The salad was very pretty to look at with its spring-like colors. The ingredients were fresh while the tart Yuzu dressing set this dish apart from being just another salad, but we had to send this back when we realized there was a film of dust on the outer rim of the plate. All of our other plates had no problems so hopefully it was a one-time mistake.

Poached Egg [3.5/5] - with braised veal, mushrooms & spinach. The poached egg was very nicely done with a gorgeous runny yolk but the flavors in this dish were otherwise uninteresting and one dimensional with a heavy mushroom taste.

Mains

Roasted Chicken [4.2/5] - with potatoes, mushrooms and truffles. The mains proved to be better than the starters as the chicken was juicy and tender while the truffle jus was aromatic!

Angus Beef Cheek [4.4/5] - with parsnip puree and red cabbage. The beef cheek was another well-executed dish as the beef was very soft in texture with rich flavors.

Duck Leg Parmentier [3.5/5] - this was rather interesting as it resembled a shepherd's pie with a fluffy layer of mashed potato on top of stringy duck meat. I loved the toasted crispy top of the potato puree with the crunchy mini croutons but the meat layer was unfortunately too salty.

Dessert

Tiramisu [3.8/5] - with mandarin sorbet with cinnamon, nuts and candies. The tiramisu itself was actually very good with a rich mascarpone content while the sorbet was refreshing as well. The various toppings on top felt extraneous though as it didn't add much to the dessert and not well integrated - just give me a bigger slice of the tiramisu!

Set lunch also came with tea or coffee but our coffees tasted overly bitter. I had to add a ton of milk and sugar to make this drinkable.

Verdict - no doubt the food was solid and well executed but it also didn't leave us wholly impressed or excited either as most of the dishes tasted as expected so there were no surprises. Maybe our expectations were too high? Perhaps it's due to the limitation of the set lunch menu so dinner will have to be the real test of the kitchen. At this point, the verdict is still out but the high quality of the food at lunch gives us confidence to come back and try the food at night!

Located in Cubus along with one of my favorite dim sum place Cornucopia, Town supposedly delivers Hawaiian, French and Japanese fusion cusine with a twist but its lunch menu fails to showcase much of it as it is quite standard with offerings like roasted chicken, sea bass, burgers and pastas. The chef is Bryan Nagao who used to be the former head chef for Felix and has worked for Roy Yamaguchi - founder of Roy's in the US. The restaurant was brightly lit with lots of sunlight shining through its floor-to-ceiling windows.

Currently, the restaurant is running a promotion for anyone to adopt its Chef Panda! All you have to do is 1) take a photo at Town, 2) upload the photo to Facebook or Instagram, 3) check-in and hash tag with #townhk and 4) show it to the staff to get the adorable toy (while supplies last).

Town offers a light lunch option with an anti-pasti buffet, soup and dessert for $168 and a 3 course menu with a starter, main and dessert ranging from $188-$238. There were 6 options of main to choose from but as mentioned before, the choices were quite standard and typical.

After placing our order, bread was brought out soon after and they were of good quality as they were warm and soft to eat.

J went for the anti-pasti buffet which had quite a few cold appetizers to choose from but the one offered at Penthouse for lunch was better. [3.5/5]

I chose the fish soup with saffron rouille for my starter and it was solid with strong flavors. I especially loved the rouille with its sharp character which contrasted nicely with the soup. [4/5]

Steak and Eggs ($238) - served with porcini mushroom hash, the medium rare steak was quite flavorful and tender which went perfectly with the oozing yolk from the slow cooked egg. [4/5]

Duck and Pork Ragout ($198) - with morel mushrooms and spaghettini, the pasta was quite average and uninspiring as the flavors just tasted like a regular tomato sauce with no duck or pork flavors at all. [3/5]

The first dessert was the lemon curd with mixed berries and shortbread which looked like a froggie to me (not sure if it was on purpose). The lemon curd was too sour for my taste though while the berries and shortbread failed to balance it out. I also wished some more thought was put into the presentation as the lemon curd is just a blob at the moment. [3/5]

The chestnut puree with mascarpone and raspberry was much better executed as the chestnut puree was soft and smooth which blended very well with the mascarpone. [4/5]

Verdict - we didn't come away feeling impressed with the food at Town after our meal. Maybe it is due to the lunch menu as we didn't get a chance to try what the chef has to fully offer with his culinary background. Perhaps a la carte at dinner will be much better as you can try signature dishes like Sicilian red prawn carpaccio with yuzu and black ink udon with Spanish prawn which sounds a lot more exciting than its lunch menu. Service on the whole was acceptable - some of the staff was friendly but some were...not. Good service can go a long way sometimes. People will love a restaurant if the service is great even if the food is not, but people will not like a restaurant if the service is bad even if the food is spectacular.
