Despite being far away from the city, the Shatin Hyatt is pretty well-known for its various restaurants. Aside from the famous Peking Duck at their Chinese restaurant Shatin 18 (which I almost had a chance to try ), their bakery Patisserie, located next to the hotel lobby is also renowned for its baked goods. My parents and I were there on a sunny Sunday afternoon, and luckily tiny café wasn’t too crowded. Granted, it was more of a order and takeaway place rather than a sit-down café. I ordered a cappuccino as my drink. You can just tell this Patisserie isn’t exactly the expert in coffee..lol. They did serve it in a double-walled glass mug though which kept the drink nice and hot so I give them credit for that. My mom had a mango yoghurt which I cannot comment much on since I only had one bite. The portion is quite small for $30… Another one of their specialties is their Shatin Honey Cake, which is only sold by the cake and not by the slice. We cut out a piece in the restaurant to try it out and saved the rest for breakfast the next three days XD Just in case you’re interested, the honey they used for this cake came from a local bee farm. I always appreciate restaurants who make good use of local resources! 推介美食: Shatin Apple Pie,Shatin Honey Cake 評分: 味道 4 環境 5 服務 4 衛生 4 抵食 3

Yardbird is a restaurant I’ve been wanting to visit for a while. They call themselves an izakaya but most of their dishes have a slight western flair to it. The restaurant is located in Soho close to Sheung Wan, but we made the mistake of walking up Ladder Street to reach it. Steep stair cases under 30 degree weather is no joke… Since it was a Thursday we got seats pretty easily. They don’t take reservations so I’ve heard about how difficult it could be to get a table on busier nights. We even got a table at bar which I was very happy with! We got some drinks to start - On the right: my ‘Jolly Rancher’ [Ume/Shisho Infused Rice Shochu & Watermelon]. I ordered this mainly because I was sweating bullets from the long walk up the stairs but I found this drink more sweet than refreshing. Not bad, but nothing too extraordinary about it (unlike the Bloody Kim Jong Il) Before the visit I actually wrote down a small list of things to order here (since their dishes are tapas-style I had quite a long list). The bartender/waiter chuckled at my list but took our order anyway. He also suggested half orders for some of the dishes since he thought we wouldn’t be able to finish it. I really appreciated that as we didn’t even know half-portions were available! Sweet Corn Tempura Speaking of seasoning, I have to say their house made shichimi powder is very good. It isn’t the regular shichimi blend so there is more depth to the flavour. Fortunately they sell these by the bottle at their grocery store (Sunday’s Grocery) I’ll be sure to buy a bottle next time! ‘Oyster’ – which is really Chicken Thigh meat Rice Cake – with furikake & seasme Unfortunately my friend had a weak jaw and thought this dish was too chewy and tiring to eat -.- Brussels Sprouts with black garlic & crispy garlic The total came out to be $621 without any service charge. But since their service was very attentive and thoughtful we decided to tip them 10% anyway.

Sinmei Tea (named after the owner herself) is a well-know tea café in Sheung Wan. I’ve been there once but got scared off by the long line up. But one day my friend and I decided to have an early afternoon tea (at 12pm lol) so we went up to try our luck, and sure enough we got seats right away! The café is located inside a commercial building which didn’t seem too fitting, but as soon as I stepped out of the elevator on the 5th floor I felt like I got transported to another area in HK. The interior is very spacious and semi-outdoors since they made good use of the patio. While the seats weren’t exactly comfortable to sit in per se, the deco still does have a very inviting vibe to it and makes you want to sit down and laze around the entire afternoon. We weren’t that hungry so we just ordered a cake each. I got a Matcha Cheesecake My friend ordered a Banana Toffee Pudding Very satisfied with my visit and I’d definitely love to be back. I need to try their matcha drinks and the famous sizzling matcha brownie! 評分: 味道 5 環境 4 服務 3 衛生 3 抵食 3

So months ago a friend and I were strolling around the Soho area and came across a Middle Eastern/Turkish restaurant. We were checking out the menu outside the entrance when suddenly the owner walked out from the restaurant to greet us. We had a small conversation and found out that he actually also owns Sahara (which I believe is pretty famous?) as well as a new Egyptian restaurant just down the block. He brought of the his new restaurant, The Nile, where he got us drinks and had a nice chat about his life in HK. Unfortunately we both had dinner plans that day so we didn’t get to actually dine at the Nile until a few weeks ago. When we got to the restaurant on a Saturday early evening, it was quite empty and found the owner sitting outside alone. He saw us walking by and greeted us – we were surprised that he recognized us! On our previous visit, he mentioned that he bought all of the interior decor and fixtures from Egypt. It does indeed have a very nice middle Eastern flair to it The total came out to be $284, which is very reasonable considering that it is SOHO area afterall. 評分: 味道 4 環境 4 服務 4 衛生 3 抵食 4

Sense Dessert is a dessert place in Yuen Long I’ve been wanting to visit ever since I found out about it. Ironically I’ve never had a chance to even though I live so close. So on a stay-at-home Friday night I asked my parents to go with me. Funny story – my dad was pretty reluctant when I suggested going out for dessert after dinner. After a bit of pushing he finally agreed “OK, we’ll go after M Club is finished on TV” LOL my dad is addicted to TVB dramas! The location might or might not be difficult to find, depending on where you’re coming from. It’s further away from the YL “City Center” where all the restaurants are located, but closer to the MTR Station. Luckily we drove and even managed to find parking in front of the store. When we got there it was almost 11 but there was still quite a bit of lineup, probably from the dinner crowd. We waited for almost half an hour for a table of 3. Why is this place so famous? Sense specializes in ‘molecular gastronomy dessert’ at a local dessert joint price range. Mind you, I still haven’t had a proper molecular gastronomy meal yet so I can’t comment on their use of the term, but it’s proven to be very popular among locals. People actually commute all the way to YL to visit Sense! By the way, while we were waiting for a table a loud scream erupted from inside the restaurant – someone saw a huge cockroach moving around on the wall. I didn’t see it but from what I heard it’s almost as long as a thumb -__- Usually this level of hygiene is what I expect at these street-side restaurants in Hong Kong, but still pretty effing disgusting when you think about it. We ordered two desserts to share among 3. Trying to keep my dad (and my tummy) in shape! One of their more popular choices would be their Tiramisu Potted Plants. Since I made tiramisu for Mother’s Day the previous week, we decided to order a more unique version which is the Green Tea Tiramisu, $45 -The ‘soil’ on top consist mainly of chocolate and a variety of nuts. They also mixed in some popping candy which surprisingly went well with the dessert, both flavour and texture-wise. Other than the popping sensation which kept the texture interesting, it also helped to cut down some of the sweetness from the tiramisu -The tiramisu, like many other matcha interpretations was really a tiramisu-inspired matcha dessert. Still it was actually not that sweet, though a stronger matcha taste would have been nice as well. Overall not a bad dessert! -After the ice cream had cooled down/warmed up a bit I took another bite and it reminded me of mini melts! -To be honest I couldn’t really taste the vanilla ice cream, but the raspberry ice cream did taste of raspberries and had sufficient tartness -As for the lava cake, the outside wall had started get very burnt/frozen looking (I really can’t tell) and I thought the inside would be all cooked/burnt as well. However that wasn’t the case, fortunately. Chocolate still flowed out as you can see below. -The texture of the cake was definitely affected by the cold – while the inside was still liquid, the cake part was a bit rubbery. As for the taste I couldn’t really tell since my tongue was half-frozen by the ice cream lol but I recall that it wasn’t too sweet either. Though again it could have been my tongue. -That being said, I really don’t see how the ‘molecular gastronomy’ elements added anything to this dish aside from the presentation. It’s all about gimmick. For those of you who don’t want to travel all the way to YL, they just opened a new branch in Jordan this week so it might be a good idea to visit this location. (and keep the YL line ups shorter for me! XD)
