The unfortunate thing is that you're almost guaranteed to be in a queue for a table here at meal times, and tonight was no exception. We should be thankful it was only half an hour wait. and the effort of keeping up with the girl yelling out numbers and colour of tickets was enough to make my head spin. Ordering food though was a piece of cake. Our guest in town did not like squid, tofu and couldn't eat pork, so that made everything very simple. The pre-paid, compulsory appetizer was chilled chicken, so we forfeited the drunken chicken and went for the cucumber and ma la bean sheets. The cucumber was properly "smacked" to soak up the flavours, but it wasn't spicy as described on the menu, just lots of chunky garlic. The bean sheets were not the ma la spiciness you get in a proper Sichuan dish, but it had a good kick to it, which was complemented by the cooling cucumber slices.

Of the many restaurants I’ve visited in this fascinating metropolis, there are few I find myself going back to again and again. However, Modern China is one such establishment, and the reason for my repeat custom is its majestic xiaolongbao (I note that others have raved about these fabulous morsels). The delicate steamed buns filled with minced pork that literally burst in your mouth in a soupy explosion are one of my favourite things to eat in Hong Kong – Modern China’s are the best I’ve had. The restaurant is part of a chain with at least three branches. I haven’t tried any of the others but the branch in Olympic is nearly always heaving. I recently took my wife, my visiting mother, and my seven week old baby boy there on a Sunday evening. We took our ticket and were seated after around half an hour wait (just enough room to fit the boy’s stroller at our table). We ordered xiaolongbao (unsurprisingly), Shanghai-style fried noodles (a little salty), chef’s special fried ride with seafood (delicious), steamed choy sum (can’t go far wrong), and sweet and sour king fish (similar to the sweet and sour you get from Chinese restaurants in England). As always, the service was efficient and courteous. The bill was a very reasonable HK$500 including a beer, tea, and a couple of glasses of pop. I think Modern China is great for decent, uncomplicated and, I guess, unchallenging Chinese food. Brits that have never eaten Chinese food outside of the UK would have no trouble finding something on the menu that looks, and largely tastes, like the ‘British’ version of Chinese food, which is why I often take visiting friends and relatives to MC first before moving them on to ‘more daring’ Chinese cuisine. Having said that, there are still some interesting/advanced dishes available that can ‘test’ the newbies. Recommended Dish(es):

I think it opens at 6:00, but believe it or not, you won't be able to find a seat there after 6:30, you would have to wait at least an hour to get yourself seated. Don't be mistaken, the food in here is absolutely worth the wait. We order some special chinese tea to begin with, "Ginseng Wu Lon", very nice and relaxing with a little sweet in aftertaste. We order about 8 courses with 7 of us eating. Every dish is very good, especially the "Siu Lon Boa", lots of juice popped out. The service is incredible, extremely quick in service and friendly staffs. And of course it comes with a price. The price is not cheap, but I do believe this is exactly what it is worth and I am dying to eat again in here. Last Friday, three of us went to this resturant to have dinner. Why to select this resturant? It was because we boughted the tickets to watch "The founding of the republic" at 9:50pm. We were busy and we were able to gather around 8:30pm. My friend went here to wait first around 8:00pm. Eventually, we got the table at 8:40pm even though we were not in the first round of dinner. So many people!!! We have ordered a 咸肉豆付湯, 松子黃魚, tofu, 擔擔麵, 小籠包 and fried noodles. Eventually, the bill was $167 per person. Really a bit expensive but it is worth. The taste of the food is good and the service is good. We sit very comfortable. To be green, the resturant no longer uses pastic bag to pack the take-way item now. It uses green bag instead. It is environmental friendly. Good practice to start in order to save our world. Recommended Dish(es):

went there with the she who must be obeyed for lunch on Thursday. Ordered 一口小籠包, 籣州担担拉麪, 义子燒餅, 水. 一口小籠包 is excellent. Very hot when served. Thin skin. Very juicy. Same to the 水. The 拉麪 is also very good. The service is just average, especially the male waiters. When we placed orders, the male waitor appeared to be dreaming, not paying attention. The waitresses were good though. Another remarkable thing is the tea. We ordered 人參烏龍. The taste was extremely good. Ended up paying about $160. See a lot of staff from banks having lunch there. I have tried this restaurant many times (probably more than 30), and I must say that its service and food quality has been consistently good. The Causeway Bay one is particularly outstanding. The price is very reasonable for a CWB restaurant. Besides the "mouthful small steamed buns" and Lanzhou noodles, I would recommend also the diced chicken with chilli pepper, minced pork with pickled vegetables, sliced fish in rice wine sauce, and the honey ham and lotus seed with buns. Oh, and don't forget the desserts Other Ratings: Taste 4 | Environment 4 | Service 4 | Hygiene 4 | Value for Money 4

up to now, i don't understand how come this restaurant got so many people to try. from my point of view, it's not worth waiting so long. i luckily tried without keeping myself waiting too long but didn't find any special in this resturant. so man, from now onwards, don't do stupid things again and again. spend your time on other worthy things instead of waiting over an hour to have a meal. I went there having dinner in last Sunday. Wow! So many people waiting for table. The manager said that some people started to wait there from 3:30pm for dinner, so unbelievable! But the foods are really good. 擔擔麵very delicious. The texture of the noodle is good. 小籠包is so juicy. Must try! 砂鍋雲吞雞is OK but not so special. I had ordered two other dishes, both were satisfactory. The portions of the food are not small and the price is reasonable. Although I spent over 1.5 hours for waiting a table, but it is still worth to try. We have booked a table but we were late about 20 minutes. The receptionist said it is the regulation to give this table to others! It's OK la! The price of food is much more cheap than I think before. is good, skin is thin and fillings is yummy. is also tasty. The is quite big, and the chicken is not rough. They offer different kind of special tea. The tea pots are not big enough, need to refilling from time to time. Other Ratings: Taste 4 | Environment 3 | Service 4 | Hygiene 4 | Value for Money 5

CIA (Non-member) | I don't really have much to say about this restaurant, just cheap price, good food, great decoration, and Still think service need little*tiny* improvement. Their price for a bowl of dam dam noodle is only 18 $ as you know is the price for *tai pai dong*. the *Siu lun bai* taste great, but I personally think the size is too big, after that me and my friends can't really eat any thing else. So I greatly recommended. Other Ratings: Taste 4 | Environment 4 | Service 3 | Hygiene 4 | Value for Money 5
