Refreshing Just OK Oct 31, 2011

We'd just eaten brunch before hitting the hiking trail, so we weren't hungry but were still tempted when my friend pointed out how famous this place was. I'm glad we stopped for the refreshing sweet dessert and a short rest, because it was a scorching hot day! Four of us ordered the cold tofu-fa and one friend ordered the hot tofu-fa. The cold was better than the hot, because it wasn't as sweet.

Not worth making a trip all the way there just to eat the tofu-fa. But if it happens to be on the way, then I'd recommend stopping by.

By the way, price is now $10 eat-in, $11 take-away

Burnt Tofu Fa on Lamma Island Cries Oct 06, 2010
Share with MessengerShare on TwitterShare on Facebook
Eating at Kin Hing Tofu Dessert was pure luck. We didn't intend to snack at first, especially right after a brunch, but since we saw an OpenRice award, we decided to have a go at it.

The cold tofu was refreshing that's true, but taste wise, it wasn't great. I don't know about the hot one, but the cold tofu didn't look good. It didn't taste great either. sadThere wasn't much bean flavour. The tofu wasn't hard enough, it was just too watery. It wasn't silky smooth either. Also, it had a strong burnt flavour to it. I've tasted burnt green/red been desserts before, but this is the first time for tofu fa. I'm pretty sure the whole pot was spoiled.
To me, tofu fa in a bowl should be in layers or big chunks; what I got was a bowl of crushed tofu. The hot tofu fa seemed better, but my friend didn't finish her bowl so...I don't know.

Perhaps, I wasn't lucky that day and got to eat from the burnt pot. I don't think Kin Hing's dessert should taste that bad.

Saw Kin Hing Tofu on Openrice before heading to Lamma so when I chanced to walk by it (I didn't think I would considering the address said "back street"), I wanted to give it a go - plus it's only $7, right?

I've tried a few daufu-fa here in Hong Kong and in Singapore, and I have to say - this one was pretty darn good. I'm not a connoisseur of daufu-fa at all, but the consistency was smooth and the syrup sweet, but not overkill. Let's just say it was still appetizing even when I added some of the sugar from the boxes on the table into my bowl. It makes a nice pit stop on your way to Sok Kwu Wan - freshen up with some cold (which is what I had) daufu-fa. Next time I pass through, I'll try the hot one smile

Oh, and "back street" just means walk as if you're walking towards Sok Kwu Wan and the beaches. You'll find it smile

This place is famous for its tofu fa but seriously, I really don't see why. In my humble opinion, a good tofu fa requires the following elements: (1) a rich soya taste (2) good texture (smooth but firm as well) (3) a good syrup plus yellow powder sugar. The only element I can find from the tofu fa is ....

We checked OPENRICE before going to Lamma Island~
Since Kin Hing Tofu Dessert is highly recommended, we made it the first on our must-try list.

smileThe tofu dessert is fine, but personally I could not tell its difference from other ordinary ones. Anyway, it only costs 7 dollars. You can always have a try.

P.S. It's so hot that day and I got sun burnt. Gee~

after walking along the trail for a while, we sat down for several bowls of tofu fa. they were absolutely the best thing that has ever happened to lamma island. i mean it makes the bak fook tofus bought from seven eleven taste like sponges soaked in syrup.

the ah por was so nice too. she gave us two extra bowls of tofu (free of charge) as we only ordered two bowls for five people. Love her =]
