So B recommended this restaurant. You can rely on B to recommend nice restaurants. Correction - you can rely on B in almost everything. Anyway, I enjoyed the food thoroughly at this homey, accommodating upstairs restaurant. I refuse to call it an 'upstairs cafe' because the label carries with it the horrors of - overpriced poor-quality food, unpleasant oiliness, rowdy teenagers playing KINECT/XBOX and the ultra sweet artificially colored drinks. Nope, Daniel's cafe was relatively quiet, with a low turnover rate (good for us, bad for the restaurant) and relatively quiet customers. We were the youngest.

    Environment:

There are around...25 seats? They can easily move the sofas around, as they did with our table. The sofas aren't really comfortable but that is beside the point. Doesn't really matter if the food is star.

    Service:
Satisfactory. There weren't any waiters idling around. Tonight Daniel's was a dude ranch. They were all very helpful, and nice. Water glasses were filled quite promptly. Gave us individual plates for sharing the food even before we asked. Good!

    Food:

Unlike what I had in Barca a few years back - but still, quite yummy and flavorful. Very thinly sliced - I prefer thicker slices, and a bit of bite. I found the flavour quite agreeable though - not spicy even for me. In fact my palate forgets even being tingled with chili. Hmm.

    chopstick Spanish Tortilla - vegetarian
     Egg tortillas
    Egg tortillas

Again, this was unlike the authentic spanish tortilla. It felt more like a dauphine potato omelette cum pancake. Potato discs were layered very methodically one atop the other. I prefer diced potatoes. The edge was not crisp and there weren't any interesting ingredients inside the tortilla as you would find in Tapeo...so I prefer the Tapeo tortilla - but I suppose there is no comparison. I expected the tortilla to be significantly oilier because that is how it is made but this one was surprisingly light. That's why it wasn't as yummy. tongue Most yum food is fat. It is regrettable. In other words it was quite bland, but if you eat it with a bit of tomato puree (?), it tastes alright!

Next time i will try the sauteed mushrooms. The garlic prawns looks nice too but the company was kind enough to accommodate my food preference. No, please go ahead. You are too kind.

    bowlMains:

Would go for this again. lol The mushrooms were plentiful and perfectly seasoned. A mixture of shiitake, oyster and shimeji (um. this is only my guess). They were delicious, fried with garlic. The linguine was al dente and each strand had a silky coating of the rather sticky mushroom sauce. I guess they mixed cornstarch into the reduced mushroom juice. It was flavorful and moreish. Suggestion: use more $$ mushrooms! and perhaps play around a bit with Asian flavors for the sauce.

    chopstickChef's recommendation - Lasagne bolognese
    正 Lasagne bolognese
    正 Lasagne bolognese

I'm not a avid lasagne fan. But I was on amicable terms with this one by the time I finished it. The lasagne sheets were not floury. They still had a bit of bite, which is fascinating because it's supposed to be baked in the oven and I thought wouldn't it be very difficult to control pasta texture in the oven? Interestingly enough these sheets had a bit of bite. The bologne was quite special in that the ground beef was almost pureed into a paste. There were hardly any 'meatlumps' in between the layers. It was yummy - meaty, slightly tart because of the tomato paste and slightly cheesy. Again, the block of lasagne held together well - it was a coherent and cohesive lasagne bologne. There's also a béchamel sauce (thanks B for correcting me smile) bedding. Didn't think much of it. I stayed away from my share. Empty calories!

chopstickPesto angel hair with garlic fried shrimpI didn't try the shrimp, but I thought the pesto flavour wasn't strong enough. Needed more of everything, especially cheese and garlic, and salt. Not sure if there were pine nuts in the pesto. The angel hair was lightly coated with pesto but it was oily.

    Conclusion:
A rather pleasant place to have a long dinner and a nice chat. Quite economical too - we only spent $82 each and were quite stuffed. They have free WIFI too.. what more can you ask for? Coming from someone using a smartphone without data plan ._. Will be back! lol
    Supplementary Information:
I'm wondering whether the owner is a Christian because the wifi password is: godislove (?) - something like that. I've already forgotten. smile

horrible... not worth it Cries Jun 30, 2012

So I went to research long and hard for an affordable western style cuisine and landed on this restaurant... from the pictures, it appeared decent so I decided to give it a try...
Once I went in, you know that this place isn't great from the start as no one was there and it is a friday night! The menu selection is very very limited and so all we ordered was the bruschetta and sauteed mushrooms and was convinced that we will go somewhere else after..

the bruschetta was very oily and the mushrooms were mediocre..
I really did not enjoy my experience there and the only thing that was somewhat decent was the baguette served with the bruschetta .. and thats not saying much.

the price was fair.. not expensive.. what you pay for is what you get apparently for this restaurant.

Today's a special day. I planned to have a special lunch with my dear as per his birthday is coming soon, but I can't celebrate with him on that day. Daniel's cafe is just a perfect choice.

I reserved a table through tablemap and I ordered a special request! Staff of Daniel's cafe called and he said that he would help me prepare a cake and write somethings special for my dear regarding my request.

We got there at around 1:35pm and we had a seat at the corner. The environment is very nice and comfortable. It allows us to have a quiet and relaxing lunch.

    We ordered three dishes:
    1) Smoked salmon salad (5 Stars out of 5)
    - It's fresh and looks nice!
    - That sauce's quite appetizing! (A bit salty & sour)
    - It contains fresh vegetables & freshly sliced smoked salmon!
    - The volume is just enough and not too much!

    2) Tortilla Espanola
    - It's hot and delicious!
    - It's with scramble eggs, potatoes and some special ingredients!
    - That tomato sauce's cooked nicely and it's a very healthy choice!!
    - The dish looks very presentable and we can feel that cook is full of passion!

    3) Pasta with Tomato sauce
    - Lastly, although this dish took a long time to be served, it's valuable to wait!
    - The tomato sauce with some herbs is so tasty! It's again a healthy choice and that sauce tastes just yummy and not overcooked!
    - Pasta's cooked very well and not too hard or too soft!
    - It's served with a big bowlsmile

After tasting these 3 dishes, the staff is so smart to take out the prepared cake! It's a slice of mango cake with words written with chocolate sauce!! Words are nicely written on the plate. My dear felt so surprised and that staff sang the birthday song with me for my dear! Thank you so much, Daniel's cafe!

We are so satisfied and so happy! The environment in the late afternoon is so quiet and relaxing! We definitely will have our lunch/ dinner again!!
    Supplementary Information:
Prices are reasonable and all staff are very polite!
They serve us very well and with happy mood.

A taste of Spain Smile Mar 23, 2012

Another nondescript building, another upstairs cafe. Right? Almost, but this one serves more than your standard fare of pasta, salads, and desserts. There's a choice selection of the most famous dishes from Spain. The place had 3 or 4 tables cushioned between big comfy white sofa chairs on either side, a TV playing the local channels quietly overhead, and a little open kitchen/bar top to complete the set up, The menu had adequate choices in each section, and you can add $30 to a pasta or main to make it a set that came with a soup and drink.

We couldn't resist the garlic prawns which had crispy garlic slices sizzling in the hot oil, and the tortilla was a perfect slice of interlaced egg and potato, Although the broccoli with anchovy sauce was not your most typical fare, it was still pretty tasty. The sauteed mixed mushrooms were nicely seasoned. The soup was a very gingery pumpkin soup which was not made with cream but still tasted smooth and velvety, and went well with a nice warm piece of bread.

The salads were basically variations of a Caesar with chicken/prawn/smoked salmon atop, but we went for the smoked salmon salad that was pleasantly arranged and quite a good portion too.

The mains were pasta or various kinds which other customers went for, but my friend decided on the curry chicken, which tasted OK, but kind of ruined the whole Spanish atmosphere for me. The pasta dishes looked good from what we observed of our fellow diners.

Service was pleasant but a little absent-minded, with constant gentle reminders to fill up our thimble-sized glass with water. The mint chocolate drink rounded up the meal nicely.
