Tonight I went to visit Schnurrbart in Tsim Sha Tsui and was I in for a treat! It was a friend's birthday dinner and there were 9 of us in total so the large table was booked a few days in advance. Our friend is a big fan of Geman things, and has been here a number of times and has never been let down by the quality of the food or the hospitality. The restaurant/bar was busy, as you would expect for a Friday night, so booking is definitely recommended for larger groups.

When we arrived we were warmly welcomed by Chris, where I later found out was the owner, who guided us to the table and humoured us all as he handed us the menu's. I quickly scanned the drinks and food and was instantly impressed with the authenticity of beers and food available. I promptly ordered a Weiss Bier (White beer), which I would recommend for people who are not much of a beer drinker, or for people who really want something sweet and smooth a Javer Shandy (Javer beer and lemonade mix).

For the main event we ordered 2 pork knuckles, currywurst (curry sausage), German salami, German sausage platter, and some other side dishes. Between 9 people, a even mix of boys and girls, it filled us up very well. The portions and very generous and the flavours are in my opinion very authentic!

I used to live in the U.K, and only recently moved to Hong Kong, and have been to Germany a few times during my life and I am happy to report if you want to experience the taste and hospitality of Germany then Schnurrbart is as close as it gets!!

There was also one other special treat other than our friend's birthday, which was the birthday of one of the staff members. Chris arranged for a shot of German Schnapps for every single patron in the premises, and on his command we all drank to the good health of everyone, especially the birthday people.

I would HIGHLY recommend this place to anyone after a cosy authentic German meal, or just simply authentic German beer and spirits. You will definitely walk away with a smile and good memories once Chris and his team work their magic.

One Day Smile Sep 21, 2011

I have been wanting to hit this German pub for quite some time. So when the 2 friends who are leaving for the UK asked for a place to hang out with, Schnurrbart popped out in my mind.

Having read the reviews, I held quite high expectation and this restaurant has definitely lived up to it! I knew it wont disappoint me when the female waitress bid us a warm welcome “Hello 3 beautiful girls” “ Aw you made my day” lol

Located at Prat Avenue, the place is not really that hard to find (though it took me some time as I’m by no means familiar with TST). Next to it is a XX sauna. Apart from a bar table, they put in place several larger tables suitable for 4-8 people. If you go in a crowd, better reserve a table in advance. But for tonight the place is just right – neither too packed nor empty.

I was impressed by the interior decor once I got in. 19th Century noble portraits accompanied by ornate street lamps emanates a vintage aura. Music is a bit unexpected though -- pop music in contrast to some jazz as I could have imagined. I remember one of them was Written in the Stars.

Okay Okay here comes the food which you may be most interested to know. Since there were only 3 of us, we simply ordered 2 main dishes plus 3 drinks. Originally planned for a dessert (fyi, apple strudel), I really cant take it as the main dishes have stuffed me to the fullest.

    The 2 main dishes
Pork Knuckle – very crispy skin with tender meat. You know what I have a thing for pork knuckle, be it cooked in the German or Chinese way. (most probably because of the collagen, a must-have if you want good skin and young look haha.) The boss (I assume) warmly introduced the 2 mustards they have for the meat. The light yellow one is sweet while the other is spicy. I followed his advise to mix the two and it tastes perfect with the meat. Another highlight is the mashed potato served with pork knuckle. Added with butter, the mashed potato was very smooth and tasty.

    Salmon Cakes
They taste like a fried mixture of smashed potatoes and salmon. And the portion is generous – there were 3 large ones served with lettuce and pickled red cabbage slices. Not that the pickles are not good, but the 3 of us aren’t really that into pickles so we leave them intact.

    Drinks
We had Irish Coffee, Amaretto and white wine. The first one is quite strong. I chose it cuz my friend has recommended it while I was in the UK but I don’t have a chance to try it out there! Its served hot with cream on top. For the 2nd, don’t bother if you hate the taste of almond. Quite sweet as syrup is added I guess. As for white wine – im not an expert but yea its normal.

Another compliment I would give is the great service. The humorous boss has for a few times asked for our opinion on the food without any annoying distraction felt on our side. When he presented the pork knuckle, I exclaimed “oh my god” and he replied “no, I am not god, my name’s Chris.” LMAF He made a very warm atmosphere there which prompts a lot of re-patrons I guess.

    Price
Its unbelievably reasonable for food and service of this standard – only 160 each. The alcohol was only 3X as we ordered just in time for the Happy Hour discount. The whole meal would have cost you double in Soho.

That should be it. I would conclude the whole dining experience as very pleasant, nearly flawless ☺. Best from me to the two girls. Have more fun in parties and sadly, classes in the UK. How I wish I could get out of here!

Went there today, a small but cosy resturant/bar.

Dinner started with a smile from the bar tender who we later find out "er spricht Deutsch", probably the owner. (All people who served us maintains good manner)lollol

The following appeared on our table during the mealtongue:
Smoked ham platter – I am ok with it, some might think it is a bit too saltysmile
    Sausage platter - goodsmilesmile
A dish made with bacon, potato, onion and egg. (That's the discription, forgot the name of the dish) – goodsmilesmilesmile
Sirloin steak with salad – Steak was tender.smilesmile
Pork knuckle with coleslaw and mashed potato – The knuckle was very good and the mashed potato's creamy – very goodsmilesmilesmilesmilesmile:
A bottle of Riesling. - ok

Finally, an encore on the pork knuckle. (The whole knuckle, with bone, is recommended, one can carve the meat by himself)

5 People close to 200HKD each.

Oktoberfest Happy Hour Smile Dec 17, 2009

    在附近辦完點事, 有點無聊...
    忽然想起朋友說過要緊記試 Schnurrbart 的 Konig Pilsener.
    剛好碰正是Oktoberfest, 又試試 Happy Hour smile

Even though another Schnurrbart is also situated in LKF and the space layout is more comfortable than here, the TST shop is mostly served by a German native bar tender - meaning, he carries an extensive knowledge of beers from that region!

The Konig Pilsener needs a long time to pour properly, much like a Guiness Black Stout or Kilkenny - but here, abnormally so for a whitish pilsener beer. When it arrived after a long wait, the aroma profile was ok-good but the taste was quite golden wheaty yet slightly metallic in taste. It became slightly too warm during the wait for the 'pour' to finish however, some fine gas-bubbles have even dissipated during this time by the time the head has settled. NEVERTHELESS - a mighty fine beer! Next time - will try the other German beers and hopefully some food! smile
This Beer takes around 7-8 Minutes to Pour!

Not authentic at all Cries Apr 23, 2009
Share with MessengerShare on TwitterShare on Facebook
I decided to go to this place after reading the good reviews here, but it was a total mistake.

We ordered an onion soup, asparagus soup, sausage platter and white aparagus with ham & cheese au gratin.

Onion soup - the onion was not caramelized and the soup was lack of taste.

White asparagus soup - not creamy enough, i.e. too watery.

Sausage platter - the sausages taste nothing like the real ones from Germany. I think the ones we bought from city super was better.

White asparagus with ham and cheese au gartin - the dish was already half cool when it was brought to our table. They didn't leave it in the oven long enough. I was hoping the cheese was more molten and a bit of browning on the edges.

The only things I like were the mashed potatos which we ordered on the side and the chips that came with the asparagus dish. Actually, I quite like their mayonnaise too.

I doubt I will ever go back again. The place was very smokey..
