I was very eager to try La Balance Ginza as it is number one on the list for the Causeway Bay Openrice page so I dragged my friend to try it with me.

    Recommendation from a magazine

She ordered the cheesecake and ice-cream with custard sauce.

And I ordered the cheesecake and ice-cream with mango sauce.

The cheesecake was not soft and did not taste very "cheesy". The ice-cream was okay but didn't taste really "milky" and the custard and mango sauce was okay. Since the cheesecake did not have much taste and was a bit harder than general cheesecakes, we ate by mixing together the ice-cream.

For HKD 35, there are way better dessert or snack choices. It is completely not recommended to try and it is completely over-rated.

I am not a fan of Japanese cheesecake, or soft serve ice-cream unless it is the soft-serve ice-cream from Kasho Chaya.

    But anyway tried it.

It costs $35 per cup and the standard items are ice-cream, a piece of cheesecake, and a choice of sauce which are mango, custard or chocolate.

I chose custard sauce and the colour of it was pale yellow.

I do not really eat these items separately, but it all tasted nice together, the cheesecake which is usually a bit dry and tasteless was moistened by the lovely cold ice-cream, but it was quite bland because both the cheesecake and icecream were not that sweet.

The custard sauce made the ice-cream and cheesecake come alive.

This dessert is perfect for those who don't like overly sweet things.

It reminded me of having scones with clotted cream with custard sauce!

a lot lighter than expected Just OK Jul 23, 2011

After hearing so many positive reviews about this shop, I've decided to go have a try as well.
For $35, it includes ice-cream, cheesecake, and your own choice of sauce, and i picked the custard sauce for myself.

Firstly, about the ice cream, I think it's not rich enough, somehow a bit tasteless. For the cheesecake, it's very light. It may not be as rich as I've expected, but I liked it's lightness, so it's okay then. Its texture was pretty good too. The sauce was indeed a disappointment. It was so not rich enough, no matter in taste or texture. I don't know about other sauces, but the custard sauce just disappointed me.
On the negative side, I would say it's let me down on my expectations to it; but on the positive side, I would say it makes a really light dessert.

Not if Sogo had its crazy sales week, I would not had realised the deli at the basement had totally changed! There I found a lovely shop selling cheesecake, looking closely to its menu, the shop actually sells ice-cream on cheesecake! The combination looked lovely, I held no resistance and bought one to try.
    Mango Flavoured...too light tho.

Choice - There were four choices in total but they only differed by the sauce that got pour on top of the ice-cream, as in Chocolate, Custard, Strawberry and Mango. All choices looked equally appetizing, but I chose Mango in the end.

Ice-cream - The texture was quite thick and creamy, but it was rather tasteless and had no milk taste at all. It had to rely heavily on the syrup on top to give some taste.

Cheesecake - The cheesecake was different from western cheesecake, more like a Japananese one I would say. It was very light and fluffy in texture which was quite a delight to enjoy. It also had a mild cheese taste which would not taste too heavily.

    -----------

Overall the cup of cake/ice-cream was not my liking, it was too lightly taste. I thought the taste of ice-cream and cheesecake would be magically delicious, but not really. The combined taste was not strong and had to rely heavily on syrup to give taste. The portion was very generous, but there was not enough syrup for the whole bowl. I stopped eating after polishing half of the bowl.

I have always loved Sogo's food hall and this time, they have a new dessert store!

Their menu is simple, japanese cheesecake and ice cream combos ($35) with four choices of topping: mango, strawberry, chocolate, and custard. (They also sell whole freshly made japanese cheesecakes)

I've never been a fruity person but this time, the mango sauce I chose was an amazing companion to the moist and light japanese cheesecake and milk ice-cream. The mango sauce was very fragrant and sweet, and there was even mango fruit pieces in it!

I've only gotten the chance to try their mango sauce so far but I will definitely go back for more! The portions are great for dessert fanatics such as I who never get satisfied with the usual Hong Kong portions! Great value, good taste, great cheesecake and ice-cream combination!
