    OMGAGA'D Smile Apr 11, 2013
Share with MessengerShare on TwitterShare on Facebook
Never do I possess a sweet tooth and I ain't a big fan for cakes and desserts. Seriously, if you see me ordering a slice from a cafe, something bad is bound to have happened. The only occasion when I do disassociate sugar with negative emotions is during birthday or festive celebrations when there's a crowd to share the cake with. It's no longer the cake but slices of pure happiness that's being shared and enjoyed.

& so lucky I am to have enjoyed some of the most wonderful birthday cakes with my family and friends, both from one of the top-notch bakery in town.

Ms B's Cakery along Gough Street is almost like the Jimmy Choos or Hermes of the bakery scene. Expensive but stylish, I cannot recall how many times I have logged into the website just to eye on the array of beautiful cakes.

This year without my knowing my parent made a secret venture to Gough Street again and there they brought a smaller but equally tasty cake called 'OMG!' home. and i was honestly surprised for the last minute i was working on a hardcore research paper, the next minute they went from the kitchen with this cake in their hands - and of course I love it too.

The OMG! is a new cake of the spring collection 2013 (see how they adopt the jargon from fashion here) and is, ironically, a sugar-free and gluten-free cake to accommodate the special dietary needs of some. These were not the motivation of my parent who thought (mistakenly) it was a sesame cake - but never mind, I like this cake equally if not more than last year's checker mate.

The cake was layered into a chocolate sponge cake (gluten free?), chocolate mousse, chocolate meringue and cocoa nibs. The sponge cake was fluffy with the aroma of the cocoa beans transient throughout, and the sandwiched mixture of meringue and mousse not overpowery rich but very, very aromatic, perfect for the sugar aware and weight-watching chocolate lovers who aint looking just for a sugar rush but also a gastronomous cocoa venture where the aroma is what they are after. The darling size - perfect for 2, so it says - took us two days and four stomach to finish, but I still think its one of the suitably sized cake for our non-sugary household.

And after the surprising OMG! I was once again GAGA'D by my foodie friends who knew my taste as well as my parent do. After an array of perhaps slightly disappointing dishes at Ngau Kee, just as we were sharing some nibbles of ginger and pineapple a gigantic familiar cake box landed on the table. The moment it was uncovered I knew it was a BE GAGA'D and couldn't stop myself from shouting its name out loud!

The reason for the instant recognition was its signature chocolate spikes in all directions, eye-catching just like Madame Gaga herself in her infamous raw beef suit. This is one of my favourite cakes from MsB mostly because of the colour - the yin yang oxymoron of black and white suits my contradictory personalities best! The cake was nicely decored with oreo chips and a thick, honest cover of Sevva's signature cream on the outset.

On the inset it is basically a Black Forest cake, a cake I don't like because I haven't tasted any great ones by far. But this is truly an exceptional because every layer of it is amazing on its own. The chocolate sponge cake is dense but not too moist and rich, the syruped blueberries drawing a good balance of taste and texture with it.

Even the grape jelly that I used to skip was soo good and rich in the fruitiness of the grape, and the key got to be the thin but crispy and buttery cracker base. The blend of heavy cream, Oreo bits and marshmallows on the outset forms the golden triangle of pure, pure indulgence and happiness. I like every bit of the cake so so much.

And one thing I really appreciate about my friends is how they deal with the cake. We didn't cut it up but for the slice for photographs and we just forked the share we want. Like seriously how often do you see people dividing a $990 cake with forks??? It was a great messy scene to watch, really. And I like watching how my friends enjoy the cake as much as I did, whilst my parents hardly share any of my festive sweet tooth. They just couldn't stand the slightest trace of sugar on their plate.

I am thankful for having parents and friends who know and love me so well. It's not just the $$ nor the cake that mattered but the effort behind that I appreciated the most. Life might have been harsh on me as this year had been an exceptionally busy and tiring one, but I am lucky and thankful for having them backing me up. In times of bitterness these sweet memories would surely be recalled as a reminder of the bright side of friendship and love, of my barely existing social life, of everything.

    Thanks again for everything smile

    "Spring" Cake
    "Spring" Cake

    1. Appearance (10/10) - very attractive and detailed presentation

    2. Taste (10/10) - the taste is light but strong enough to sense the strawberry aroma and those tiny strawberry seeds

    3. Texture (8/10) - rather disappointed to find that the sponge cake was a bit hard but the cream in between the layers was so creamy and light

    4. Value for money (8.5/10) - the cake can be shared amongst 8-10 persons

    5. Overall (9/10) - Ms B's Cakery does produce some very nice cakes which I think is worth a try for those special occasions

Memory is not sweet Just OK May 01, 2012
Share with MessengerShare on TwitterShare on Facebook
The name of this cakery was always appeared in the conversation of my female colleagues recently. However, I can't think of any reason for me to pay this expensive price. Fortunately, this is my friend's wedding anniversary, Ah Ah...what a reason...
    MEMOIRS OF A GEISHA
    MEMOIRS OF A GEISHA

I choose MEMOIRS OF A GEISHA because of the name (I like that movie), made from Japanese red beans (hope that it will not contain radiation) & most importantly, they usually make small version only.

The cake is made up of 5 thick layers, so tall...it is not very sweet...color is romantic but pale (that mean they have not add artificial coloring).
However, there is only thin smell & taste of red beans, a little bit disappointed. But for this price, I wold expected more.
    Supplementary Information:
The shopkeeper was very nice! The attitude remained good even she was very busy. I could park my car right in front of the shop!

Share with MessengerShare on TwitterShare on Facebook

In fact, i havent tried those delicious cakes over at Sevva. But, the cakes here at Ms B's are so awesome that you cant resist.

This time, i have ordered the darling size of Be Gaga'd!
    Be Gaga'd
    Be Gaga'd

This darling size cake is actually huge and you can share with 5-6 friends. If you like black-forest cake, you will love this cake as well.
Even though im not a super fan of black forest, but i like the jelly in the cake and the oreo-like crunches.

I have tried Better than Sex cake as well for my friend's birthday. If you cant live without chocolate, Go for it ! The carmamel crunches are so yummy as well ! tongue But, share with more friends. Coz their cakes are so sweet and you will get filled very fast ! haha but cant wait to try the next flavor!

I bought 3 small cakes to share with a friend: Banana Lust, Memoirs of a Geisha and Better Than Sex.
Banana Lust, Better Than Sex, Memoirs of a Geisha
Banana Lust, Better Than Sex, Memoirs of a Geisha

The best one was Banana Lust, which was basically banana bread with a thick layer of cream (there may also have been a bit of caramel in it) and another piece of banana bread on top, garnished with fresh banana slices and crispy banana chip-like things. The best part of the cake was that it was VERY banana-ey. The banana chips on top were also very thin and crispy, not like your average banana chips. The cake was good but come to think of it, banana bread/cake is not hard to make. Therefore, no wow factor.

Things started going downhill after Banana Lust.

We then tried the Memoirs of a Geisha, which I originally thought was a raspberry mousse cake because of the raspberry on top. After a few bites, I realized it was a red bean mousse! The red bean flavor was not very strong and actually bordering on bland. The worst thing about this cake was the sponge outer layer, which was kind of hard and seemed like it was left overnight! They probably wanted a harder type of sponge that was tough enough to hold the mousse in, but it tasted a bit stale to be honest.

At this point, we'd already concluded that these cakes were not worth $50 each.

Last was the supposedly Better Than Sex cake, which I'm sorry to say was a huge disappointment. The chocolate taste in itself wasn't bad but the chocolate cake base was literally like Betty Crocker cake mix... come on Ms B, you can do better than that! Not only that, the cake fell apart way too easily, the only upside being that it was very moist. Must've really been Supermoist cake mix. I tried eating the red lips, which were basically a clump of icing sugar, not nice.

All in all, NOT worth $50 each.

Packaging was very nice (although they should consider giving out forks).
    Nice packaging

This is 'Better than sex' Smile Aug 30, 2011
Share with MessengerShare on TwitterShare on Facebook
Date dined: weds 10th August 2011

Intro: Created by Bonnie Gokson who is famous for her ‘Marie Antoinette's Crave and the Original Caramel Crunch Cake ' at SEVVA

Ordered: Better than sex, Madame Butterfly & CheesecakeTaste: Madame Butterfly- is an exotic and intense blend of beetroot, pistachio and chocolate layered chiffon with apricot compote and fresh cream crowned with dark and white chocolate.
    正- Madam Butterfly
    正- Madam Butterfly

The appearance of this cake was colourful. Made of three layers of cake in different colour and taste. It attracted me straight away. The colour matched perfectly. With top layer being dark red then second layer a lime green then bottom layer is chocolate brown. The cake is on a piece of cake base as I call which has white & black lines. On top of the cake was a piece of chocolate in a shape of a ring with also black and white lines that matches the base!
I liked the whole design of the cake, round with different layer and the use of the colours.
Each layer is a different unique taste. The second layer has this lemony limeish taste. But the taste is not strong. You could hardly taste the unique taste. The bottom layer is chocolate taste which is also faint which is good, as three layers are faint in taste, they put together as ONE good cake. But it isn't as boring as just one boring chocolate cake.
Birds eye view on madam butterfly
Birds eye view on madam butterfly

The cake is moist but not over moist or rich. What I loved about this cake is, it isn"t too sweet like nearly all the cakes you can get in Hong Kong are like. So sweet you can not taste the cake itself. The taste of freshly baked cake, the egg the flour etc. But the cakes here you could taste the cake itself. The cake is soft, light and very spongey. But not spongey as in a sponge cake, it still has the density of a cake.
With the appearance i couldnt wait to dig in. And it surely didn't disappoint me!
The only thing i did not like about the cake was the apricot filling in the cake. Firstly i did not like the filling as it was bit too sweet and it did not match the cake. Although i can understand why there would be the filling as without the filling the cake would be very boring. Maybe they could have chosen a different filling, maybe strawberry or respberry?

Better than sex- i loved this name!!! So was it really better than sex? Hmmmmm... Was hard to say! But it was definately better than any chocolate cake! The appearance was not as classy or as thoughtful as Madame butterfly. Maybe the whole cake was brown so you cant't see the details or as complex as Madame Butterfly.
    better than sex
    better than sex

The cake is chocolate cake with caramel crunchy parts on top with hard chocolate bits on top. Their is a red lips in candy on top. Makes the cake really sexy. Inside the cake is a thin layer of caramel inside. It might all sound very sweet but the cake was not sweet at all. The cake itself was light and taste very 'cake' with faint chocolate flavour. I had a spoonful of cake with some crunchy caramel bits with it which adds to the texture. Crunchy and spongey. The crunchy bits was quite sweet but there is only few small pieces so it was not overly sweet and it actually balance out with the unsweet spongey cake.

The cake was not mind blowing, and i am not too sure about its name, but this is definately a hit than a miss. I loved the whole concept. How chocolate is better than sex. How the chocolate cake isnt VERY sweet to be a good chocolate cake. How they used crunchy caramel pieces wuth the cake. The red lips was alluring but, was just sugar, nothing special.
    better than sex

Cheesecake- i did not taste much of it. but a short conclusion of it, It wasnt as good as the two cakes before. it had a coconut feeling to it which was strange. Coconuta nd cheese? dont go... hmmmm...
    Cherry cheesecake
    Cherry cheesecake

conclusion: Ms b's cakery is very mind blowing. even teh names are so attractive. not only the cakes are pretty as all cakes needs to be pretty these days, but you can see the thoughts that have been put into it. the layers of different taste and color matching of one cake.. how much efforts and thoughts needed to make a cake, I cant even imagine. Although the cakes are much more expensive than otehr cake shops around. But it is well worth it. Her light fluffly chiffon cake, with egg fragrant. i love it. it is not too sweet although the appearance is so decieving.
i love it very much espcially madam butterfly. i cant wait to try more of their cakes, although there are limited single small cakes they have and DONT FORGET, the minimum you need to buy in a box is THREE!!!!! So that is 150hkd already.

I loved their cake design, but i loved their whole concept design.

If in the cake industry you have designer, this designer must be Vivienne Westwood in the cake industry. The cakes are modern, outstanding, its way beyond petite little modern cakes these days. it is colorful, quirky with interesting names. The packaging is extroidinary. i feel proud holding the bag with the box.
    lovely bag
    lovely bag

Black and white stripe with musturd green and red. What a choice of color, the compelling colors. The box is absolutly gorgeous, and the cake board underneath the cakes are black and white strips which is so quirky. i love it.
Lovely use of colors on packaging
Lovely use of colors on packaging

i cant wait to go back for me.Unbeatable. I think it is way better than the cakes in SEVVA
Lovely box in a lovely bag

Thanks to my colleague that I had a chance to try this fabulous cake. When looking at the surface of the cake, just think that it was a normal Angel Cake as produced by Maxim's.

However, when cutting it, I could see a rainbow inside. It was actually different fruit tastes.

It was a very wonderful cake with such a big surprise to us.
