a homemade day off - of course have to make good use of it and continue with my cafes-to-explore list! i have had a lot of all-day breakfasts, but never eggs benedict. don't know why. just never really wanted to try, until today... * * * * * * arrived at the place just over noon. 13 tables there (2 for four and the rest for two) with only 4 occupied. walked straight up to the cashier where i was greeted by not-exactly-welcoming baristas. truth is they seemed rather unconcerned - if only they could at least smile. it's just that cafes to me are happifying and warm and light-hearted and slow-paced and most importantly, personal, because of the connection between the baristas and the cafe and the customers. so that they are not like those cold efficient restaurant chains. ANYWAY. seated myself at the corner after placing orders. looked around
as i said i usually don't order eggs benedict. but i was attracted by previous reviews and pictures about the dish here so i thought: yeah, why not give it a try? let's just say, when the food and drink arrived, i was instantly cheered up and forgot completely about the discontent i had with the service i received!
love the spinach cos it made the dish seem so much healthier and... i love spinach. lol the salad on the side was fresh, tinged with salad vinegar. since i am doing coffee for lent, i ordered premium chocolate, which came together with the eggs benedict.
Premium chocolate ($32)
i will definitely be back to the place, to try the coffee and the all-day breakfast, and of course to refresh my loving relationship with this eggs benedict! hmm. with good food in my stomach i feel that this is gonna be a beautiful day! Supplementary Information: there is wifi (of the mall: gala place)!no socket. note to self: there were other restaurants in the same basement! seemed nice. might drop by later teehee Recommended Dish(es):

wanted to give it a try for a long time as this one is quite famous recently. the place is quite small. i thought it was an restaurant, but it's actually more cafe-like. there were not many people at night. it was disappointing that their salmon egg benedict (i forget the name) and spagethetti with clams were sold out. we could only order the balcon one and another pasta. egg benedict: happy to see 2 big half-boiled eggs ! the eggs they used looked quite different from the usual ones we have at home, they were bigger! the bread was warm and crunchy. good! i gave the egg a small bite and 'sucked' the egg yolk. lovely! actually it should have been tastier with the egg yolk 'flowing' onto the bread. the combination of egg, balcon, holland sauce and the bread was just perfect, i prefer more sauce though spagethetti with olive oil: my fd said it was good, but the portion was too small and a bit too oily. iced chocolate: strong chocolate flavour. wanna try their all-day breakfast next time Spending per head: Approximately HKD80 Other Ratings: Taste 4 | Environment 4 | Service 4 | Hygiene 4 | Value for Money 4

It's rare that I write a second review on a place, in fact, it's never happened before. But the pasta I had this afternoon was SO GOOD, that it deserved a mention. The aglio e olio was al dente, piping hot, with the optimal balance of garlic and chilli. Simply delicious! And better than a lot of Italian restaurants. Just wish the portion was bigger. I have found another good place for coffee in Hong Kong - 18 Grams I haven't been able to find out much information about 18 Grams, it kinda intrigues me why they have called their shop 18 Grams and not 28 Grams? Hmmm...I don't really know much about coffee making but does 18 grams have any significance to making a good cup of coffee? Anyhow, I do know 18 Grams is a local company and their barista Ed Lam had recently won at Coffee Roasting Competition held in Guangzhou. They now have 3 stores across HK - Causeway Bay, Mongkok and Tsim Sha Tsui ~ but Mong Kok is their largest store and probably the most comfortable ~ I've heard good things about 18 Grams so on a nice sunny afternoon, I dragged Sasa out of bed at 1pm lol early for our standards and got there at around 2pm. The cafe was basically empty, and were told we can sit where ever we wanted ~ they didn't give us a menu but had a large menu next to the cash register, where you ordered and paid.
It's basically the 'Big Breakfast' we call in Australia, with scrambled eggs, baked beans, sausages, bacon, tomatoes, baked beans and toast ~ The scrambled eggs were cooked nicely, where it was that great smooth consistency. The sausages were a little 'gamy' for my liking but Sasa thought they were okay and the bacon just wasn't what I'm use to home...I've found the bacon here is like a cross between ham and bacon
My friend loves poached eggs so without a doubt, she got the Eggs Benedict ~ the muffins were lightly toasted, topped with gammon ham, spinach, poached eggs and finished with hollandaise sauce. I tried it and thought it was pretty good
I wouldn't call myself an avid coffee drinker because most of the time I just drink Mocha hahaha But I know what mochas make me smile ~ and this definitely did
My friend ordered the Ice Caffe Mocha tasted like mine, however, the chocolate and coffee wasn't really mixed thoroughly so it was like the chocolate was at the bottom, then the coffee, then the milk. Both good but I think I enjoyed my mocha a little more They also have a range of desserts such as homemade tiramisu, New York Cheesecake and their Not Quite Brownie "Brownie" which I'd love to try next time ~ 18 Grams is definitely a great place to hang out with friends, especially since food is nice and reasonably priced. Plus an added bonus would be the fact they don't have a 10% service charge like most places in HK woo hoo! Go check it out when you have the chance and if you find out why they're called 18 Grams please let me know! Recommended Dish(es):

There is something about a big Aussie (or English) breakfast laden with eggs, warm toast, baked beans (YES!!) and sausages that is just so comforting and satisfying. After trying the Croque Madam and coffee at 18 Grams (which are both very very good) a few times, I finally had the opportunity to sample the Aussie breakfast... at lunch time. Honestly, there is nothing fancy about these big breakfast, but to get everything right somehow manages to elude a lot of restaurants. I am happy to report that everything tastes good on my plate, including the sausage. To me, the best part of the breakfast, and the definitive sign of a good breakfast, is being able to mop up the last morsel of baked beans and last drop of egg yolk with the remaining piece of toast, leaving a completely empty plate. This is what polishing off your plate of food truly means. Burp.

service: no water will be provided so you have to order drinks order and pay before sitting down as no one will help you if you just sit down and wait for someone to come will not make you go by taking away all your plates or glass
not as noisy as i expected seats were very comfortable good chatting place and actually quite private enough
cheaper than most egg benedict shop food size was larger than the cost you pay extra spinach didn't require extra amount but extra harshbrown did
spinach was too salty but the chopped garlic let me feel their heart both eggs ( three i should say, as my mom the same time ordered egg benedict while one of them did ) were moving yolk sauce was the best i've tasted, sour enough, better than simplylife, flying pan, bricklane...etc salad was well tosed with oil and vinegar but a bit too sweet ham was not too salty and was fried very crispy, very good!!! mix greens salad was very fresh and i even had one piece of expensive baby spinach english muffin was soft inside and crispy outside but not too buttery, good!!!

The 18 grams signature: going under the counter?
Tasty piccolo latte but I prefer Capp
***One won't get this blend from its first shop in Causeway Bay so this new branch of 18 Grams is really worth a visit if one happens to be in Hong Kong and wants a good cup*** 18 Grams and Glory Coffee were so adamant that they want each shop to have its character and they don’t want to run a chained café. As such, you can only get TLP at its Mong Kok shop. I was also told that the blend might be roasted lighter which could further accentuate the origin tastes, a la third wave style. I consider this blend one of the best in Hong Kong and highly suggested you drop by for a hip and happening cup at 18 Grams in Mong Kok which I prefer to the one in Causeway Bay due to its coffee blend. My wife and I were looking for a simple place to have a decent, western-style breakfast somewhere in Kowloon, but we woke up a little late. We ended-up at iSquare, at Carpaccio Pasta Pizza Vino which had what looked like an OK brunch. It wasn't; coffee was terrible (watered down latte according to my wife), food wasn't good. We read about a new spot in Mong Kok (here on OpenRice incidently) called 18 Grams and decided to give it a try the next day. Very satisfied with the outcome: food was quite good. My wife tells me the coffee was also quite good. Price is decent. Eggs Benedict and Croque Madame were good. Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be a lot of places in Kowloon that can do the basic western breakfast right and at a decent price. 18 Grams pulls it off nicely.
