a homemade day off - of course have to make good use of it and continue with my cafes-to-explore list!

i have had a lot of all-day breakfasts, but never eggs benedict.
don't know why. just never really wanted to try, until today...

    * * * * * *

arrived at the place just over noon. 13 tables there (2 for four and the rest for two) with only 4 occupied. walked straight up to the cashier where i was greeted by not-exactly-welcoming baristas. truth is they seemed rather unconcerned - if only they could at least smile. it's just that cafes to me are happifying and warm and light-hearted and slow-paced and most importantly, personal, because of the connection between the baristas and the cafe and the customers. so that they are not like those cold efficient restaurant chains.

ANYWAY. seated myself at the corner after placing orders.
    looked around

and i quite like the combination of wood, brown and grey. pity it is in the basement, deprived of natural sunlight.

as i said i usually don't order eggs benedict. but i was attracted by previous reviews and pictures about the dish here so i thought: yeah, why not give it a try?

let's just say, when the food and drink arrived, i was instantly cheered up and forgot completely about the discontent i had with the service i received!
    eggs benedict ($72)
    eggs benedict ($72)

eggs benedict made with toasted english muffin, spinach, ham, poached egg and the really special slightly sour creamy mayo-like paste - it was so yum! lol
love the spinach cos it made the dish seem so much healthier and... i love spinach. lol
the salad on the side was fresh, tinged with salad vinegar.

since i am doing coffee for lent, i ordered premium chocolate, which came together with the eggs benedict.
    Premium chocolate ($32)
    Premium chocolate ($32)

it was too thin, but not bad. i really liked the layer of foam and the delightful crowned bear!

i will definitely be back to the place, to try the coffee and the all-day breakfast, and of course to refresh my loving relationship with this eggs benedict! tongue

hmm. with good food in my stomach i feel that this is gonna be a beautiful day! smile
    Supplementary Information:
there is wifi (of the mall: gala place)!

    no socket.

note to self: there were other restaurants in the same basement! seemed nice. might drop by later teehee

i like egg benedict Smile May 21, 2012
Share with MessengerShare on TwitterShare on Facebook
wanted to give it a try for a long time as this one is quite famous recently. the place is quite small. i thought it was an restaurant, but it's actually more cafe-like. there were not many people at night. it was disappointing that their salmon egg benedict (i forget the name) and spagethetti with clams were sold out. we could only order the balcon one and another pasta.

    egg benedict:

happy to see 2 big half-boiled eggs ! the eggs they used looked quite different from the usual ones we have at home, they were bigger! the bread was warm and crunchy. good! i gave the egg a small bite and 'sucked' the egg yolk. lovely! actually it should have been tastier with the egg yolk 'flowing' onto the bread. the combination of egg, balcon, holland sauce and the bread was just perfect, i prefer more sauce though smile

spagethetti with olive oil: my fd said it was good, but the portion was too small and a bit too oily.

    iced chocolate: strong chocolate flavour.

wanna try their all-day breakfast next time smile

More than coffee Smile Mar 05, 2012

It's rare that I write a second review on a place, in fact, it's never happened before. But the pasta I had this afternoon was SO GOOD, that it deserved a mention. The aglio e olio was al dente, piping hot, with the optimal balance of garlic and chilli. Simply delicious! And better than a lot of Italian restaurants. Just wish the portion was bigger.

I have found another good place for coffee in Hong Kong - 18 Grams smile YAY! I've noticed lately more coffee shops and cafes have popped open on the Kowloon side where I live, which is great!

I haven't been able to find out much information about 18 Grams, it kinda intrigues me why they have called their shop 18 Grams and not 28 Grams? Hmmm...I don't really know much about coffee making but does 18 grams have any significance to making a good cup of coffee?

Anyhow, I do know 18 Grams is a local company and their barista Ed Lam had recently won at Coffee Roasting Competition held in Guangzhou. They now have 3 stores across HK - Causeway Bay, Mongkok and Tsim Sha Tsui ~ but Mong Kok is their largest store and probably the most comfortable ~

I've heard good things about 18 Grams so on a nice sunny afternoon, I dragged Sasa out of bed at 1pm lol early for our standards and got there at around 2pm. The cafe was basically empty, and were told we can sit where ever we wanted ~ they didn't give us a menu but had a large menu next to the cash register, where you ordered and paid.

    Aussie Breakfast $98HKD ($12AUD)
It's basically the 'Big Breakfast' we call in Australia, with scrambled eggs, baked beans, sausages, bacon, tomatoes, baked beans and toast ~ The scrambled eggs were cooked nicely, where it was that great smooth consistency. The sausages were a little 'gamy' for my liking but Sasa thought they were okay and the bacon just wasn't what I'm use to home...I've found the bacon here is like a cross between ham and bacon tongue

    Eggs Benedict $72HKD ($8.7AUD)
My friend loves poached eggs so without a doubt, she got the Eggs Benedict ~ the muffins were lightly toasted, topped with gammon ham, spinach, poached eggs and finished with hollandaise sauce. I tried it and thought it was pretty good smile I can be quite picky about hollandaise sauce but I enjoyed theirs as it had a good balance of butter and lemon.

    Mocha $32HKD ($3.8AUD)
I wouldn't call myself an avid coffee drinker because most of the time I just drink Mocha hahaha But I know what mochas make me smile ~ and this definitely did smile The coffee had an fantastic aroma and the barista mixed it with the appropriate amount of chocolate, to ensure that it wasn't overpowering the coffee or vice versa. Yummy ~ I might go back on Monday haven't had good coffees in the past week or so tongue

    Ice Caffe Mocha $34HKD ($4.1AUD)
My friend ordered the Ice Caffe Mocha tasted like mine, however, the chocolate and coffee wasn't really mixed thoroughly so it was like the chocolate was at the bottom, then the coffee, then the milk. Both good but I think I enjoyed my mocha a little more smile

They also have a range of desserts such as homemade tiramisu, New York Cheesecake and their Not Quite Brownie "Brownie" which I'd love to try next time ~

18 Grams is definitely a great place to hang out with friends, especially since food is nice and reasonably priced. Plus an added bonus would be the fact they don't have a 10% service charge like most places in HK woo hoo!

Go check it out when you have the chance and if you find out why they're called 18 Grams please let me know!

Give me breakfast anytime Smile Jan 12, 2012

There is something about a big Aussie (or English) breakfast laden with eggs, warm toast, baked beans (YES!!) and sausages that is just so comforting and satisfying. After trying the Croque Madam and coffee at 18 Grams (which are both very very good) a few times, I finally had the opportunity to sample the Aussie breakfast... at lunch time.

Honestly, there is nothing fancy about these big breakfast, but to get everything right somehow manages to elude a lot of restaurants. I am happy to report that everything tastes good on my plate, including the sausage. To me, the best part of the breakfast, and the definitive sign of a good breakfast, is being able to mop up the last morsel of baked beans and last drop of egg yolk with the remaining piece of toast, leaving a completely empty plate. This is what polishing off your plate of food truly means. Burp.

A new design. I like it a lot!!!

This is a new branch of 18 Grams and Glory Coffee in Hong Kong in Mong Kok on Kowloon side which is in one of the busiest shopping districts. You can reach this place via Mong Kok MTR exit E2 or Yau Ma Tei MTR exit A2, the latter, I believe, is closer.
Customers flow in all the time... :)
Customers flow in all the time... :)

The entrance of the shop is a bit of a mystery for those who are not frequent in the area like me. One needs to walk a bit further from the Gala Place main entrance to find an escalator that goes down to its basement.
The 18 grams signature: going under the counter?
The 18 grams signature: going under the counter?

Being in the mall, the opening hour late into the morning, 11ish, makes having coffee and breakfast there somewhat off. Nevertheless, Egg Benedict was much touted there by its head barista so that is my target next time.

For food, I had a basic spaghetti meat sauce. It was good. The dish had a rich, meaty and gluey sauce though I would prefer spaghetti a bit more al dente. The dish also carried a ‘fusion’ tone, more western of a Chinese style western dish (Confused.. lol). Still, it works fine and I like it.
Rich and meaty sauce.. Can be a bit more al dente

This is a cafe so let start with the coffee. What's so special about it is the return of the "Three Little Pig" blend to 18 Grams after a six month hiatus.
Left, What is in TLP. Right, how TLP tastes
Left, What is in TLP. Right, how TLP tastes

Three Little Pig blend is Mexican, Guatemala and Nicaraguan and one get the clean, citrusy sweetness in the cup that works very well with milk and black coffees. The blend may not be outstanding in term of the body and aftertaste and carries a bit of the roasty and peanut tone that I don't really like but it is a signature of Glory Coffee. However, what's in the cup more than makes up of all the weaknesses and what it does not have.
Very nice citrusy and sweet espresso
Very nice citrusy and sweet espresso

Ristretto below is even more interesting. It has a flowery fragrance note, followed by acidity (citrusy to be more exact) Nevertheless, the body could be much better but it's a nitpicking here. I prefer espresso as my default drink at 18 grams. Even in the empty cup, the honey and citrusy fragrance of its black coffee were so salient I kept on smelling the empty cup for a long while.
Ristretto: intense, flowery, Citrusy but weak body
Ristretto: intense, flowery, Citrusy but weak body

This time, the TLP seemed a bit darker in the milk vs. my last encounter with this blend six months later. The temp of the drink was perfect but please always ask for warm drink to be on the safe side in this part of the world. IIRC, Capp here is top with chocolate powder so ask the barista to hold the chocolate/cocoa powder too.!!!
Nice texture and sweet vs. cafe with Sydney root
Nice texture and sweet vs. cafe with Sydney root

I got a very nice chocolate tasting note and very sweet milk drink I haven't had for a while. This is a great for Aussie style though it's still way behind in term of velvety texture Crema Coffee in TST East offered. Still, this is a highly recommended place for milk drink, aided by its superb blend, TLPs.
Beautiful latte art. Taste good too.

The Picolo latte, complimentary from the head barista, was very tasty but I don't like some smoky note in the cup so I suggest you get Cappuccino here instead.
Tasty piccolo latte but I prefer Capp
Tasty piccolo latte but I prefer Capp

If your root is from North American where the drip coffee is a standard drink, you can move in with ease with this TLP which is very clean, sweet and acidic. Also, this is closer to what the third wave coffee made famous, ie less stress on body and complexity which is very ‘old world’ style. While some local may think this coffee is not ‘strong enough’ (唔夠硬) and not too long ago lots couldn’t imagine the clean and bright acidity cup will fit local taste profile of roasty/toasty note, 18 Grams at Gala Place is a living proof local knows how to appreciate good, hip and happening tasting note coffee all central American blend contributes. This is a kind of coffee coffee lover asked others to get a bag when one of them visited North America as you could happily drink this coffee without invoking something else to make it more ‘palatable’ like tradition such coffee comes from or romanticizing Italian things to make drinking the coffee 'bearable'.

***One won't get this blend from its first shop in Causeway Bay so this new branch of 18 Grams is really worth a visit if one happens to be in Hong Kong and wants a good cup***

18 Grams and Glory Coffee were so adamant that they want each shop to have its character and they don’t want to run a chained café. As such, you can only get TLP at its Mong Kok shop. I was also told that the blend might be roasted lighter which could further accentuate the origin tastes, a la third wave style. I consider this blend one of the best in Hong Kong and highly suggested you drop by for a hip and happening cup at 18 Grams in Mong Kok which I prefer to the one in Causeway Bay due to its coffee blend.

My wife and I were looking for a simple place to have a decent, western-style breakfast somewhere in Kowloon, but we woke up a little late. We ended-up at iSquare, at Carpaccio Pasta Pizza Vino which had what looked like an OK brunch. It wasn't; coffee was terrible (watered down latte according to my wife), food wasn't good.

We read about a new spot in Mong Kok (here on OpenRice incidently) called 18 Grams and decided to give it a try the next day.

Very satisfied with the outcome: food was quite good. My wife tells me the coffee was also quite good. Price is decent. Eggs Benedict and Croque Madame were good.

Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be a lot of places in Kowloon that can do the basic western breakfast right and at a decent price. 18 Grams pulls it off nicely.
