Lot of Variety ..Impressive Jun 11, 2012
I was so impress with the food variety and food quality at Cafe on M. We have 6 adults and 2 kids celebrating Father's Day on Sunday. The kids were being well taken care of. On the time we arrived, 2 kid chairs and child table sets were ready. The animal printed paper were placed on their table with 2 sets of color pen ready to entertain the 2 boys, which I was very please with the arrangement.
I found the steaks especially good on that day! The lamb chops and beef steaks were freshly pan fried and it's not common to serve those high quality steaks at the buffet. The restaurant provided seafood with oysters, crabs and lobsters, even a chinese style steam fish and shellfish served on small bamboo streamers. I was not a big fans to seafood but my parents certainly did.
They have over 15-20 small cups and dishes of desserts and 6-10 different variety of ice cream. I especially love the red bean bean curd pudding and the chocolate fountain with marshmallows.
The buffet came with a free coffee or tea. A nice hot cappaccino end the night! Super!

Less Choices But Above Average Quality Jul 19, 2011
No wait needed on a Tuseday afternoon.
Salad: Good salad items, including quality items seared tuna and a well-made potato salad. There is also a manned freshly tossed salad station. A.
Cold section: Crab legs, smoked salmon, cold cuts, parma ham, plus other seafood items. A.
Soup: Two Western (minestrone and clam chowder) and one Chinese. Minestrone was good. Clam chowder was a poor mix of butter and flour with no real stock. C.
Sashimi: Limited choices of salmon, hamachi and some rolls. C.
Western Mains: Roast beef is above average. Japanese grill is freshly prepared on the spot with lamb, short ribs, pork and beef skewers and it was ok. Excellent braised beef brisket in red wine and fantastic mashed potato. Vegetables. B.
Chinese Mains: Fried shrimp in peppers (紅黃青椒等), fried clams in chili sauce, good beef fried rice, Napa cabbage (黃芽白), dim sum. B.
Asian Mains: Green curry chicken, curry with boiled egg, Naan bread, ok. B.
Noodles: A variety of noodles in soup. Did not try.
Pasta: Pasta is freshly made, not the pre-made dried stuff that has been cooked. Good choices of topping. Sauce is good and the cook does a good job. A.
Fruit: Watermelon, rock melon, and papaya. Not many choices but quality is very good. A.
Dessert: Opera cake has no taste except sugar. Chocolate and coffee cake was very good. Apple Crumble is average. Haagen Daz ice cream is served with about 6 varieties. You can also add toppings. There is a chocolate fountain with strawberries. B.
Service: Not bad for a buffet but if it is stuffy (焗) when you are sitting in the section above the stairs.
Lunch vs Dinner: For dinner, there will be freshly shucked oysters, steam fish and other additional premium stuff.
Overall, above average quality-wise. It's certainly much better in terms of quality than Cafe Too or Cafe Kool or Shangri-La even if it has less choices. Shangri-La only wins on dessert and presentation.
Price: Weekday lunch: $238, dinner $398. Weekend lunch: $308, dinner: $458. Plus 10% of course.
Recommended Dish(es): Fresh pasta,salads,beef.

cheaply priced new york cheesecake May 18, 2011
New York Cheesecake
A whole cake, which was quite weighty and substantial in size, cost less than $200. I found this extremely cheap, and at first had doubts about its quality. However, I found it was actually of very decent standard, with a satisfying cheesiness and was both firm and dense yet creamy in texture. I liked the sweet pudding-like layer on top, which reminded me a bit of the cheesecake made by the Mandarin cake shop at Mandarin Oriental. Though I guess the latter might be slightly more superior, I would have no hesitation in choosing the cheesecake here, since I feel it is well worth its price.

what a disappointing tea-set! Mar 13, 2011
We took the high-tea set yesterday. It is charged at $168 per person. For 2 persons, it would be $168x2. It consisted of 3 small rectangular plates. On the top plate, there were 4x2 mini-size “sandwich” with a very thin layer of “thing” (so thin that I could not tell what it was) on the top. Each piece was only of the size of a $5 coin.
The middle layer: 4x2 sweet snacks. Three of them were some sort of fruit tart or pastry, with some fruits on top of the custard paste. One piece had a texture similar to cheese cake but it did not taste anything. They were all of mini size.
The bottom plate: 4 mini scones. No fresh cream was provided. Only jam in small jars. Like the other snacks on the top 2 plates, the scones had no taste.
The cappuccino was terrible. It had no coffee smell at all! Any cheap restaurant is better.
Although the price of the tea-set of Peninsula, HK Intercontinental, Mandarin Oriental, are a little bit more expensive than this, their food are so much better! The tea-set at Cafe on M should not worth more than $100 per person. Actually, even if they charge only $100 per person, I would not try again because the foods are really bad.
We were very disappointed at the tea-set because the foods at lunch and dinner are Ok.
