We love vegetarian food although we are not vegetarians so we joined friends in the loft (which is actually the UG floor)...at a pleasant table with interesting artwork on the walls.
There was no appetiser as I have read in other reviews. The first dish (some salad with indiscriminate components) was quite delicious and left us hopeful for more goodies to follow. The fried wantons were crispy and had a delicious peach sauce but we had trouble working out what was actually in them! After this there followed a selection of dishes which were much the same...brown coloured liquid masquerading as soup, curry or dessert with balls of varying colours which tasted of nothing; unimaginative rice; real vegetables which were green but covered in more brown liquid! The dessert jelly was gorgeous to look at but was too firm and lacked flavour. The tea was lavender but I'm not sure how you could tell.

Overall it was a very disappointing meal, especially for the cost. Why can't vegetables be used as they are instead of being disguised as something else? Thank heavens we were there with friends who made the evening great fun!

OK, let me state categorically that I am not a great fan of the local vegetarian cuisine. Not that I am meat-totaller, I basically find the local version of vegetarian dishes hard to stomach. What's wrong with serving simply vegetable dishes, tofu, mushrooms, etc? Why do the local eateries have to make them look and taste like cha-siu, ham, pork, etc.? If I wanted the taste of the real thing, I would go to the non-veggie restaurants and not somewhere that serve look-alikes. That I find revolting. This place is no different.

The tea tasted different, I was told that it was lavender. Honestly, I wouldn't have known as it didn't smell nor taste like the real flora but nonetheless I would have to give the restaurant some credit for being different. The peanuts on the table were not crispy, even the refills didn't taste fresh so they must be pre-packaged and sourced from 2nd or 3rd grade stores.

The cold appetizer had some cucumbers, preserved eggs, etc. in a soya sauce - nothing to write home about. Then came some deep-fried shredded taro, similar to those found during Chinese New Year. The soup looked like a cross between a diluted tomato soup with the Tom Yum found in Thai restaurants with neither the freshness of tomatoes nor the herbal flavours normally found in these. The following dishes consisted mainly of veggie dumplings, mushrooms, etc. - not one of them stood out. The only one that caught my attention was the rice in clay pot - this was filled with the taste of preserved vegetables 梅菜, cooked to perfection with a nice crispy crust at the base. The desserts were similar to those found in any local Chinese restaurant - in one word, bland.

For the price of around $200 per head, it wasn't expensive but I left harbouring the same feeling as I walked in - another one of those veggie place!

Wow... what a pleasant surprise it was to find this private kitchen. I was actually pointed in the direction by the Lonely Planet Guide to HK (and for those who never look at it - check it out! I've been living here for 6 years and I still get great recommendations from it...) But the restaurant had moved. Anyway the phone number was the same and we figured it out.

Ok the details... first and foremost... NO CORKAGE FEES! Bring as much beer/wine/alcohol as you want and they are happy for you to drink it, no charge (and there's a Welcome accross the street with an ok selection of wine.) Second, it's $208 per person, cash only, no service charge. The menu is a 10-course fixed vegetarian menu. I say fixed because they choose it for you, but it fact it does vary from table to table. They will ask when was your last visit when you book, and they will modify your menu accordingly. Speaking of which, make sure you book, because it is technically member's only (though we only booked 5 minutes before we got there...) Environment is lovely... intimate with ratan dividers all around but you are not totally secluded so it still feels like a restaurant. Service was friendly and fast. One note though... they literally kick you out at 10pm.

The food was in a word stupendous. Every dish was excellent... all of them were highlights. We had a cold cucumber and pomelo salad to begin which was fabulous. Ginger soup was excellent. Veggie dumplings in a tomato soup... veggie scallops well they tasted so much like scallops I was inclined not to believe them. I figured they were using real scallops, calling them veggie, and fooling us all Curry had a 'beef' in it that tasted so much like beef it was scary... bean curd I was told.

Anyway check it out - might seem a bit spendy at first but when you realize no service charge, no corkage charge, and 10 courses, I think you'll be happy. Oh and aparently if you're not full at the end they'll keep feeding you until you are. Though after 10 courses, we were both stuffed.

We went here to try out the vegetarian private kitchen dinner.

The setting of the restaurant is quite comfy and the variety of dishes was quite creative and interesting.

We were served with peanuts as appetizers. The peanuts were coated with a special salty flavor on the outside and tasted very crispy.

The salad was definitely excellent. I liked the fact that they put in a lot of peanut sauce and tried to make vegetarian "sashimi" and "sushi".

The vegetarian dumplings were not too bad and each bowl had 2 dumplings. The soup was also very faresh.

The fried potatoes were yummy. I liked the fact that the sweet and sour "pork" was not really made of pork, but of noodles and tofu. The vegetarian pizza was also very creative.

I just didn't like curry because it was far too spicy and curry just isn't my cup of tea!

All in all, it's a good meal and the food is delicious, creative and nourishing. Prices are reasonable and service is pretty good. I particularly enjoyed the dessert which consisted of sweetened walnut soup and osmanthus jelly.
