Randomly felt like having some Waffles one day, and the first restaurant that popped up in openrice was the Green Waffle Diner. It's located along Graham Street, perpendicular to Lyndhurst Terrace. The wall at the entrance of the diner was filled with many promotion posters and articles about Green Diner, so definitely the right place to visit! chopstick

    Arrival & Ordering
Originally, I wanted to go on Monday but their rest day was Monday - so you readers don't forget about this! tongue
Arrived there at around 12pm on a rainy Friday and was promptly seated in the empty restaurant. Within minutes, the restaurant was already packed with people. As I did not book a table, the waitress kindly told my friend and I to return the table at 115pm. The place looked very relaxing and chill, shame that the aircon above me was slightly too strong. mad

Their lunch menu had 5 options, but for the greedy me, I wish they had some breakfast options in it too! Anyways, it includes a coffee or tea and half a waffle - very cute and just the right proportion before I stuff myself with too much waffle. I wanted to try lunch set 5 (caramel apple crunch waffle with daily soup) but I was too tempted to try the mac & cheese pasta.

The macaroni cheese quickly arrived within 5 minutes after order and was still bubbling on the skillet. Tasted perfect, with al dante macaroni and a well portioned sauce. Shame that my friend's beef quesadiallas did not arrive at the same time, but the chips were well spiced and fried.

Of course, the most important was the waffle. Very well made, with a balance of textures - crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside. Absolutely amazing, paired with vanilla ice cream and chocolate sauce!

Green waffle is one of my favorite spontaneous brunch spots, those who know me will know that I like to make lists and plan my days weeks in advance (making reservation way ahead, study their menu etc). But occasionally I leave a few empty spots here and there. And it’s on those days that the “no reservation” policy comes to my advantage! Lisa and I were both having really lazy morning, lazing around the house; we were supposed to eat at 12 but didn’t end up meeting till 1:30.

The wait at green waffle was surprisingly short, we were seated within 5- 10 minutes. I like the casual vibe, the open coffee bar and the American diner sofa booths go well with the comfort food it offers. Their menu is loaded with hearty breakfast choices, from the usual omelette, pancakes, egg benedict and the likes to sizzling skillet, and I love that they have quite a good selection of waffles. You can even customize your perfect waffle dish with their selection of toppings, sides and different ice cream flavors. Even though I examine the menu every single time, I always end up ordering the same thing- the berries delight with green (pandan flavor) waffle; Lisa was deciding between getting pancakes or getting something savory. There are a few options on the menu which offers both sweet and savory but she picked the spicy tomato and sausage skillet in the end.

The pleasure of eating green waffle is on the first bite, after you first cut open the waffle and the aroma of panda leave rushes to your nose. Surely the waffle can be fluffier but honestly there is really no place in hk that does waffle/ pancakes right. I wonder if it’s coz buttermilk isn’t readily available (buttermilk is one of the ingredients for making fluffy pancakes). Anyways back to the waffle, Lisa watched with slight disgust at my dorkiness as I divided my ice cream evenly so each small square in the waffle gets a chunk of ice cream. The contrast between the cold, slightly melty ice cream and the warm, crispy surface of the waffle was heavenly. The caramel ice cream also went very well with the sliced bananas.

Lisa found her skillet far from faultless, while it looked decent with the poached eggs piled on top of the mixture of potato cubes, onion, sausage and cheese. We were slightly disappointed as she cut into the eggs on top, we were expecting runnier egg yolk but they seemed to be slightly overcooked. The small cubes of potatoes were crispy on the outside and soft and hot on the inside. In the perfect world (Lisa was really missing NYC at that moment), the potatoes could have been more “burnt” to give an even crispier texture; the onions could have been caramelized and the skillet loaded with cheese. The cheese was a little on the thin side and the gooey, cheesy effect we were looking for with the ideally runny eggs and cheese overload was sadly not realized.

Despite the critique, the food was very decent compared to the popular brunch spots like the Brunch club and Oolaa where food is crappy and you really pay just for the vibe. The unpretentious and relaxed ambience at Green Waffle put us at ease on a lazy Saturday and we had a great time catching up!

Decided to have waffle and ice cream for dessert.
Opted for the original with vanilla and hazelnut but they were out so went for chocolate instead.
When the waffle came it looked and smelt good but the waffle was too light and seemed a little under-cooked.
Also the ice cream was icy which is a sin for ice cream!
I have been to Green Waffle Diner a few times and it was great, not sure what happened on this occasion.
Despite this one time bad experience, I will visiting GWD again.

Fried Chicken Smile Feb 02, 2013

We'd had our eye on this place for a while, and came in for lunch when the sushi place across the way didn't have a table for us. I thought it was good.

chopstickFried chicken: the chicken was piping hot and tender. The skin was crisp and the batter light, though heavily flavored with herbs. There was a definite tang to it, perhaps it was buttermilk? It doesn't stack up to, for example, Popeye's, but it was pretty good American-style fried chicken, which is tough to come by. B+

chopstickMashed potatoes: the potatoes were flavorful, though overly lumpy. The "gravy" was tomato-based but OK. B

chopstickReuben: my wife's favorite sandwich is the Reuben, and we haven't been able to find one in HK until now. She gives it A-, but would give it an A if it had more sauerkraut. A-

chopstickFries: I found them a little flavorless, mushy, and overly "potato"-y, if a potato can be that. The ketchup was Del Monte. Why??? C+

Overall, we had a great experience, and will definitely come back, as many of the menu items seemed worth a try. Before moving here, I lived in the land of diners (Jersey) and it's nice to have some of that same experience here. A-

I am yet to find a better place than Green Waffle Diner for waffles in Hong Kong!

Inconspicuously located on Graham Street, Green Waffle Diner is a cosy American-style diner which serves comfort food from chicken wings and steak sandwiches to pancakes and waffles. It is best known for their pandan waffles, and they have an amazing recipe which ensures that the waffles are incredibly light and fluffy!

Food is not expensive to start with, and during the week, they have a great-value set lunch for $83 which includes a hearty main course, half a waffle and coffee/tea. Note, though, that bookings for lunch can only be made for 12.15pm or 1.15pm – rather inconvenient for most people, but that just shows how popular this eatery is! I personally prefer to come here in the weekend for a chilled afternoon tea, when this small restaurant is less crowded.

    (1) The Reuben ($101) is Green Waffle Diner’s signature dish, and it is a grilled sandwich served on slices of rye bread, pilled high with sliced corned beef and sauerkraut, melted Swiss cheese, and the secret Reuben sauce. The rye bread was nicely grilled, the steak was generous in portion and not too salty and the melted cheese was stringy and moreish. The “secret Reuben sauce” actually tasted like thousand island dressing, and I absolutely loved this sandwich!

    (2) The herbed veggie skillet was a main course for the set lunch. The poached egg was beautiful, and the crunchy potato cubes and vegetables just came together marvellously! My friend liked dipping the potatoes in ketchup for extra flavours, but I found the skillet flavourful enough on its own.
    Herbed Veggie Skillet

    (3) The Big Spaghetti Bolognese was also a main course that came with the set lunch. I was surprised to find the pasta al dente (I didn’t expect American eateries to master this art)! The Bolognese sauce was tangy and satisfying, and was delicious with lots of cheese.

    (4) You could order the buffalo wings in 3 or 6 pieces ($28/ $56). These little wings were crispy and scrumptious, not to mention addictive!

    (5) Our first waffle was the Berry Waffle Delight ($57), which was a waffle topped with blueberries, bananas and strawberries, finished with whipped cream and a light drizzle of chocolate. The waffles at Green Waffle Diner are much more fluffy than Belgian waffles, which tend to have a more substantial texture and are more buttery. I was completely drawn to these fluffy waffles, which were so light and pillowy that you wouldn’t be stuffed at all after eating the whole thing!

    (6) This Pandan Waffle ($57) was infused with Pandan Cheffron juice, and was in a mild light green colour. You could order the pandan waffle on its own for $28, and then add fruits, toppings and ice creams, instead of getting this fixed combination. The pandan waffle and the accompanying fresh, juicy fruits and green tea ice cream were a match made in heaven! My only complaint was that the green tea ice cream was a bit icy, but that aside, this dessert blew my mind!

    (7) My friends all know that I have developed a chronic addiction to anything green tea-flavoured since my visit to Los Angeles in May. Here at Green Waffle Diner, I found my fix! This terrific cup before me had a strong matcha flavour and aroma, and was most importantly not bitter; I had no complaints and joyfully downed the entire cup.

to make sure we don't leave hungry though, we also hit up their savory menu and went with probably the heaviest thing of all the options - steak and eggs! the eggs were beautifully tender and steak was good meat too, potato was soft with just a tad bit of crunch on the edges~ yumminess everywhere smile

because we are a table of fatties we added a pancake stack (which I'm also a sucker for), was soft, spongy and buttery lol

the overall environment was very american: the menu, the condiments (they even have steak sauce!), the portion, haha very homey feeling smile A little pricy for lunch but was good value in my opinion.

Service was also very friendly, not fine-dining level, but friendly nonetheless. My friend requested vegetarian egg benedict and the waiter worked with kitchen to tweak it a bit to remove the ham and added some salad on the side. smile

Yesterday I went for dinner here again (after having lunch with my colleagues last week) while I am craving for WAFFLE.

As expected, it's as good as my lunch!

We've ordered 2 set dinners which starts with tomato soup - unexpectedly good! Very creamy!

Main courses: pasta and one pork knuckle; especially the pork knuckle, very tender!

And got a separate order - Skillet

With our special drinks - half price:

and dessert - Wafflesssss!!! Its best to go with ice-cream and original flaour is always the best one, served hot and crispy: )

    Definitely worths coming back again!

PS: There is wifi provided there / worst thing is it's a small area and you feel bad to sit there and chat for too long!

Gotta choose right! Just OK Feb 18, 2012
Share with MessengerShare on TwitterShare on Facebook
First time I went there it was dinner and I was impressed by -
    - Steak skillet - cheesy, yummy steak bits, potatoes, onions. A bit oily but very delicious. Would imagine to be a great hangover cure.
    - Salmon and dill linguine - amazing!! This was the dish that really impressed me as they really took their time into experimenting ways to improve this common dish. Loads of dill, lemongrass, GINGER; amazing combination, very flavorful.
    - Shakes - good, refreshing
    - Berry berry waffle - very fresh and generous dried mixed berry sauce; waffle - light, crispy, just the way i like it
    - Pork knuckle - ah, so-so; large portion

So excitedly I went again for a weekend brunch, but theres a huge difference in quality in the breakfast menu -
    - Toast was way too dry
    - Eggs over and easy were too overcooked
    - Sausage just tasteless
    - Eggs Royale on waffle - usually a great sucker for eggs benedict but this was a disappointment. The hollandaise sauce was tasteless!!! Hows that possible? Usually I find eggs benedict too rich in taste but I had to put in loads of salt and pepper to make this tolerable. The poached eggs - white part rather too firm; yolk was alright; sides was greatly disappointing, a plateful of tiny potato bits only. A little of them would be fine in the skillet, but alone they are too dry and tasteless, and rather difficult to fork together. Would recommend them to give us more side choices, and leave the tiny potatoes, not good.
    - Hot chocolate - AWFUL. I tried both the regular one and the macadamian nut one, both way to sweet to drink more than 2 sips. It's not chocolatey, it's just SWEET.

A bit overpriced as drinks were not included in the breakfast set.

Well, I'd still recommend this place for the good dishes, and all in all I can tell the owner really puts his/her heart into it. It's a more comfy place to hang out other than the crowded flying pan. But, much improvement needed on the breakfast menu, afterall, isn't all day breakfast your selling point?

This comment is only for the smoothies not the food. They are very watered down and I found at least 3 full ice cubes in them. Their taste should be fruity and slightly sweet but they are neither slightly sweet nor fruity. We had the sleeping beauty which tasted like a watered down soy milk with bits in it. And the All nighter which was just as watered down and tasteless and sour ( due to the sour orange juice). Go here for the food not the smoothies.

This place is nice for a casual snacktime with friends. The classic waffle was light, absolutely not heavy and tasted good with the fruit and sweet sauce that was poured on top of it. I do think that they should have added more whipped cream though.
The skillet tasted very nice, but unfortunately the poached was a bit overcooked. But that didn’t take the flavours down of course. Recommendable!

Green Waffle was a complete spur of the moment decision. We were at a networking drinks close by and a friend had just returned from his meal at Green Waffle and recommended we try it. He particularly cited the chicken wings as being top notch. Now, I am generally NOT a fan of chicken wings in HK - I find that they are just not made correctly here and they pale in comparison to anything you can get in the U.S. In fact, I had pretty much sworn off of eating any chicken wings in Hong Kong EVER, so I'm not sure why I allowed my friend to persuade me on this night. I guess it was the beers I had already consumed clouding my judgement as well as the rumbling in my tummy.

Green Waffle is a cute enough place. We were stuck into a tiny corner booth and 3 or 4 other tables were full when we arrived at about 930pm. Some groups were there specifically for desert, as we saw plates of hot waffles with ice cream and fruit passing by us. I skimmed the menu but already knew I wanted to try the wings, which I ordered "medium" spicy (you can also try "hot" or "bbq"). My boyfriend ordered a reuben sandwich (which he loves when we go to New York but is generally disappointed by when he tries it in HK). He also wanted to try a pandan waffle, but I didn't feel like a big dessert that night. Service was a bit slow given the small size of the place, but nothing too terrible.

The wings were almost predictably disappointing. They were deep-friend and then coated in the sauce, which , in terms of spiciness, barely made my lips tingle. I was also alarmed to see the waitress set them on the table without any celery, carrots or blue cheese (blue cheese being the most important). When I asked for some bleu cheese, she said they no longer serve the wings with blue cheese because so few customers were eating it / asking for it! Then I asked for some ranch dressing (which isn't quite the same, but could do the trick) and they didn't have any of that either. Oh the shame! What kind of customers are eating at Green Waffle?! When the manager came to clear our plates and ask how the food was, I mentioned I was disappointed in the wings. He concurred that he wished they could prepare the wings differently, but it is too difficult and lengthy of a process to bake them when each customer orders them - that is why they deep fry. I think he had spent some time in the U.S., because he also knew the wings should have been served with some blue cheese and celery. Oh well, I will have to wait for my next trip home to have chicken wings again.

The reuben was suprisingly fine, though not packed too high with meat, it was tasty but got a little soggy after awhile.

There were also no paper towels OR toilet paper in the ladies toilet, which really grossed me out. This is basic hygiene guys!

I probably won't give in to my friends' spur of the moment recommendations any more! That said, I am sure "Green Waffle" is a pretty good bet for its namesake cuisine - waffles - so I could be persuaded to stop there once more to try one of their specialty waffles.

hot hot lunch Just OK Apr 29, 2011

we've been walking and walking under the hot sun around central and we've decided that we should find a place to chill out and have a nice bite or else we will probably have melted on the street.
we were in Graham Street, and this restaurant popped up on my mind immediately then.
the air conditioning was not strong, but we don't want to go outside and find another place, so we've settled down here then.
it's a public holiday so there wasn't lunch sets available. since we aren't particularly hungry as well, we just ordered a Country Brunch Skillet and a Green Waffle.
well, ordering a skillet was actually a wrong decision since we were basically burning already, but we've heard that this place's skillets are good so we had one anyway.

there's a poached egg on top and i liked how the egg yolk get mixed together with the food in the skillet after breaking it. there were bacon, onion, green pepper, potato, and cheese. i liked the hint of cheese from it, it hasn't taken over the overall taste of the skillet but enough to feel satisfied by the taste of it. i wouldn't mind if there were a little bit more though. the food were pretty well seasoned, and the whole dish was aromatic.

the green waffle was said to be one of its recommended food and it sounded quite special so we picked it instead of choosing other options such as buckwheat, wholewheat, gluten-free waffle, etc. the waffle is served with a scoop of ice cream and we picked vanilla ice cream, which i think would feel light and fresh.
if the green waffle was on the highly recommended list, i would be a bit disappointed then. this is because it just tasted like any ordinary waffles. it is said that the green waffle is made with some juice or something but i didn't taste that at all and seemed like an ordinary waffle with several drops of green coloring to me instead. the waffle itself tasted okay, but i don't see anything special about it for being the green waffle. the vanilla ice cream scoop did tasted fresh and light, it's pretty nice.
in overall it's quite a nice meal, and i might like to return to try their other skillets or other dishes perhaps, but for waffles, i don't think there's anything so special about them here.

Real Green Waffles Just OK Apr 24, 2011
Share with MessengerShare on TwitterShare on Facebook
Popped in here after passing on my way home. Was feeling a bit hungry so I thought why not.

I ordered a pandan waffle with ice cream and a ice tea.

The place was very quiet only people in there other than myself was a pair of girls. Despite this service was slow.
The waitress took forever to come and take my order even after signalling I was ready. huffy

The waffle took a while to arrive but when it did it was worth the wait it seems. However the ice cream that came with the waffle was of very very poor quality, there was a scoop of strawberry, chocolate and vanilla but it obviously cost $10 or less for the packet it came from as they all lacked in flavours. They do give you the option to "upgrade" your ice cream at a cost. If I was to go back I would probably do this as I personally don't think the "ice cream" they served even constitutes as real ice cream.

The waffle itself was wonderful, a light green colour with a nice fluffy texture when cut, it made up for the poor ice cream.

I might go back again and try one of the other waffles with the upgraded ice cream of course!

YUM YUM!! Smile Apr 21, 2011

I must say, this is one of the best diners in HK!

Their waffles are a MUST-HAVE. I espeically like the white chocolate chip waffle. It's not too sweet (to my standards) and I prefer it without other condiments, well maybe a scoop of ice cream lol They also have a choice of upgrading to movenpick ice cream!

Another great dish i had was the deep fried chicken drumsticks.
The drumsticks were huge! They were soo tasty and juicy! Thinking about it is giving me cravings!

I also had a fresh fruit smoothie, another highly recommended item, cause it was very refreshing, and they used real fresh fruits!

My friend had the steak skillet...very initeresting way of serving the dish. However, I would definitely prefer having the steak less cooked.

    I highly recommend this diner!

A tip for you....I was there during the busiest time on the weekend...12-2:30pm.
Suggest for you to got at other times to avoid the crowd

Cold Food Cries Apr 02, 2011

I love diners and was exciting to try this place. Although it's down a little alley and doesn't look like much from the outside, it's quite charming on the inside. I sat down and ordered the eggs Benedict. I got my dish surprisingly fast, took the first bite, and....

    THE EGGS WERE COLD!

There's nothing like cold eggs to ruin eggs Benedict. So I flagged the waitress and asked for eggs that weren't cold. She picked up the plate without a word and a few minutes later a different waiter came back with my plate and set it down in front of me saying, "There." No apology, just a rude "there," as if the cold eggs were my fault.

Determined to make the most of my breakfast I dug in. The dish was OK. I prefer thick country ham on my eggs Benedict, whereas they had used what looked like think lunchmeat ham. The second round of poached eggs were only room temperature, but at least they weren't cold. The home fries (on the side) were probably the best part of the dish.

It's unfortunate because the places seems to have a lot of potential, but for me a rude wait staff ruins all that. Long story short, I won't be going back. There are plenty of other great breakfast places in close proximity that have better food AND a waitstaff that appreciates your business. If you're looking for a good breakfast/brunch place, I would recommend The Flying Pan around the corner (right off of Hollywood Road). It's a cute diner with great food and great service (and it's 24/7).
