I have been wanting to go to Ant One’s for the dessert buffet, but it is only available in the evenings, however when I walked past Kaneda, I saw the dessert buffet for only $98 per person including bottomless drinks.

There are a total of 22 desserts to choose from which is about the same as Ant One, however Ant One offers Chinese desserts as well. Although Kaneda doesn’t have Chinese desserts such as fried sweet dumplings, it was not a loss to me since I do not like Chinese desserts. The items that I wanted to try at Ant One were also available at Kaneda.

The desserts available were:

1) Chocolate cake with molten chocolate filling
This was piping hot and the size of the ice-cream scoop and chocolate cake was super mini, it was slightly smaller than a tablespoon.2) Baked walnut cake
This was not too sweet, nice and chewy, it was made of 90% walnuts and sweet syrup.3) Italian cheese cake

4) Mango puff pastry
This was layers of puff pastry sandwiched with custard cream topped with mangoes.

5) Green tea and red bean mousse

6) Strawberry pancake with custard cream
Didnt try, but tried the banana pancake.

7) Ice-cream skewer

8) Serradura pudding
This tasted like the usual serradura pudding, very creamy.9) Creme brulee

Nice and creamy but the taste of honey was light

Nice, but too many raisins.

Another one of my favourites, the strawberry flavouring wasn’t fake and it was refreshing with the yogurt ingredient.

25) Mango cakeThe desserts were served in tiny cups and dishes, there was a fresh plastic spoon every time, which not that environmentally friendly.

There were metal cutleries too, but the spoon couldn’t fit in the tiny dessert cups.

Improvements:
It would be good if there was a side plate to rest my used cutlery rather than directly on the table.

Japanese all-you-can-eat seated buffets are becoming quite the rage in Hong Kong. But is it value for the money? Or is the quality of the food sacrificed at a cheap price? Kaneda has its ups and downs... some dishes were nice while others were just blah. It's not expensive, but I'd rather spend $200 elsewhere. Too mediocre for me to come back. if you've read any of my previous reviews, you'll know that I'm not a sashimi fan and thus it wouldn't be right for me to judge the sashimi. My co-workers found it okay though, no complaints, and they ordered more, so I'm guessing it wasn't bad. I just like sharing sashimi pictures because they're colorful I wish they had English translations on their order tickets like at Kichijyu in the Loop. NO to the mushrooms. They were dry and plain (no sauces to add flavour... boooo) and the bonito flakes didn't make it better because they were dry and plain as well The best part was the sawdust pudding dessert (right), which had a strong creamy and milky flavour, with crumbs at the top. On the opposite end of the spectrum was the creme brulee - the worst I've ever had >.< It was not only bitter and cold, but lacked the crackly caramelized top coat as well. I wasn't expecting anything fancy as I'm sure desserts aren't the restaurant's speciality, but seriously this was so bad... major disappointment.日式汁煮牛肉鍋... umm... I'm not sure if this was an attempt at sukiyaki... because if it was, it was very very sad. You can't just put some cabbage, mushroom, tofu and beef in super sweet broth and call it sukiyaki. That just doesn't do sukiyaki any justiceon the brighter side, this tofu (with a bite taken out of) was good ~ the sauce was sour, and sour things are appetizing in general, at least for me. I think I had about three of this... not worth $200 just for this though lola thumbs up for the okonomiyaki! very flavourful, lots of mayo and okonomiyaki sauce... what would normally cost about $100 for one I can get unlimited here! finally... an entree that I liked! woot! I wasn't sure what to expect when I read its name on the menu at first... the small circles that you see are balls of fried cheese, and the corresponding Chinese name is "a bite of cheese" ~ how fitting. The cheese wasn't very cheesy... as in it didn't have a strong flavour, but it was alright... the 年糕 had a vague cheese flavour as well. As a cheese lover, these two items get only a mediocre rating from me.

Overall... the quality of the food here varied drastically. It's one of those places that I'll say I've been there done that, but probably won't be going back... at least anytime soon!

I was not expecting to be going to Kaneda again so soon, it was a case of been there and tried that.

Walked past and saw a sweet menu serving crepes, desserts and savoury items.
I looked at the menu, I was so surprised, Kaneda being a Japanese cuisine, serving the Crepes at La Creperie.
Studying the menu further, it saids they have a branch in Shanghai, which is possible they imitated La Creperie in Shanghai, and now serving it in Hong Kong.

On my last visit, when they newly opened in Wan Chai, crepes were not available yet, only the desserts section. Ironically, it is located not far from La Creperie.

Anyway, from the menu, the crepes were 90% the same as La Creperie, even the name and ingredients used such as Roblochon cheese, organic egg, La complete, La suzette, La sextant and the history of Brittany!!!
The price was matched to La Creperie too but only slightly cheaper.

Same as my last visit, despite being the first customer there, I had to wait a while for the receptionist to call the staff upstairs and arrange a table. Same as before the staffs are not flexible at allocating preferred tables.

After browsing the menu, ordered the Sausage must (assorted sausages, cheese, french mustard, salad) and La mouselline (homemade salmon pate, spinach sauce).
I ordered the sausage must because the picture showed the sausages were not the usual boring frankfurters but one I havent tried before, and the salmon one because salmon pate sounds interesting and the green spinach sauce was appealing.

Same as La Creperie, the crepes also took a while to arrive, after waiting for half an hour the salmon one arrived.
It looked similar to the ones at La Creperie, however the spinach sauce was totally different to their product shot, apart from that there was salad, mini bowl of criss cut fries, asparagus, mushrooms and extra sauce.
The spinach sauce was different to the product picture, it was creamy white sauce with spinach pieces in it.

The restaurant was beginning to fill up that time, and the air con was turned on full blast, and it was like sitting in windy a freezer.

Anyway, the sausage crepe was yet to arrive, and with the windy air con, I had to tuck into my salmon crepe.
I started on the asparagus, and mushrooms which were both good, then I tried the crepe, despite looking very similar to La Creperie it was tasteless, the crepe was too thick, and not crispy at all.
The salmon was very bland, and the texture not like pate at all or mousse as the name sounds.

Then the sausage crepe arrived, also looking nothing like the product picture, the sausages were different. The sausages were slightly over salty.

After finishing the crepe, I wanted to have crumpets as well, but the air con was doing my head in.
Anyway ordered that as well, and chose apricot jam with it.
It was a gamble ordering the crumpets, because not sure if they could make one well, if their pancakes were so so.
The crumpets arrived dusted in icing sugar served with butter and apricot jam.
The apricot jam was orange in colour and slightly runny.

The crumpets didn’t have many capillaries as the ones I had before and the base was slightly tough, but maybe because I haven’t had it for ages, it tasted OK, however I think I am going to buy a frozen one from the supermarket and compare it to that. So far, this is the only restaurant I have tried that serves crumpets.

I think next time I will try their sweet crepes and desserts.

Compared with the TST branch, the TST one is old and grotty, and situated in the back streets of TST.

The Wanchai branch was pleasantly located outside the tram stop opposite Southorn sports ground, near the bakery.

There is a flight of stairs that take you up to the restaurant. Before you enter, there is a small counter for you to check in. I arrived on time, and so did some other people who booked, however the restaurant was not ready yet for the customers to come upstairs, hence everyone waited another 5 minutes.

I was surprised that my booking details were printed on their list rather than hand-written one like other places.

At the bottom of the stairs, one side was mirrors, and so was some part of the restaurant, walled mirrors, which was quite cool.
The restaurant was split into two sections, the buffet section and the dine in section, and a bright hallway leading to the dining area. In the hallway, there was a desserts cabinet with high-end looking desserts and dressed up chefs standing there looking professional.

Anyway sat down, and started ticking away at the food selection and submitted them to the waitress, however she recommended that we were only to submit some as the food would come very fast and the table wouldn’t be big enough.
This was true, the food did come fast, however when it got busier, the items came a lot slower.

As one of the waiters brought out the skewers, it was actually touching his shirt, so I mentioned it to him, and he disposed of it, instead of serving us that one.
Overall the food was OK, the fried food was slightly disappointing, as the oil wasn’t fresh.
Their items with cream sauce were not that good either such as the pasta and dried shrimps, baked oyster and bacon, and mussel. Their cream sauce was a bit heavy, also the baked oyster had a massive piece of shell in it.

One of the side dishes was good, the tiny pot of vinegar jelly with seaweed.

Although it was Japanese food, I felt that it wasn’t that Japanese, such as the lamb chops, soft pork bones. Basically the food is similar to Aoba.
