I went to the one in Central and have to say I was really disappointed.

The food did not taste like mexican. Far from it. I got the set combo with rice, beans, chips (very stingy serving) and 2 tacos. You would be better off buying a kit at the supermarket and making at home for a more authentic taste.

I spent $82 for lunch for one person because they charge for extra sauce and guacamole. I don't mind paying extra but the portions are so small it is not worth the extra money.
    I will never go back!!

I also tried the horchata but was too sweet.

and a big FYI to the owners.. tacos are suppose to be served ob corn tortillas not flour.

Please don't waste your time. It really is pretty awful. I ordered the burrito combo - carne asada burrito, tortilla chips with salsa and an iced horchata. The burrito was really dry and the carne asade was in overcooked bits, tough and full of tendons. Tortilla chips were oily and didn't taste fresh. The horchata was really the only tolerable part of the meal. I was really disappointed. I know its tough to find authentic Mexican food in Hong Kong but this fell way off the mark. sad

So AVERAGE... Cries Feb 02, 2012
Share with MessengerShare on TwitterShare on Facebook
I was excited to see Mr. Taco Truck open in Central ---Wo On Lane --- as I had heard about the Quarry Bay outlet but never gotten around to trying it. I am from New Mexico and have eaten plenty of Mexican street food around California also.

Ordered "grilled" fish tacos, "spicy" pork tacos, "super" nachos ----

They were not grilled ( they should be at least "blackened" which gives it a slight kick)
They were not spicy ( come guys---give us some heat---HK people can handle it)
They were not super ( a little cheese on it, a little pinto beans and a little gaucomole--- not worth $40)

It needs A LOT more flavor---so bland---I kept wanting to eat it because it looked good/fresh
but ever time I tried to take another bite it was so disapointing that I eventually gave up---such a shame
this isn't hard food to do and I am willing to pay $16 a taco
please someone open a WAHOOS here

p.s. I did like the salsas ---they were the only food item (condiment) that had any flavor
p.p.s- fish tacos at cali vintage are decent but too small and the bali fish tacos at hierloom were almost on the money and tasty but $$$$

A satisfied quick lunch! Smile May 31, 2011

I worked in Quarry Bay. So this restaurant has been my frequent lunch place since they opened. The shop is decorated like a truck (as shown in the other reviews). Very cute! I usually go for dine in but this time, I only have 30 minutes for lunch due to meetings. I went to buy Takeaway since their kitchen is usually quite fast.

Ordered a swiss enchilada combo and upgraded the drink from soft drink to Mexican chocolate. The Combo comes with rice, salad, chips and drink.

Swiss enchilada is a dish with 3 rolls (wrapped with chicken), topped with Mozzarella cheese and tomato cream sauce. The sauce is very creamy and got a fresh tomato taste. I like the

The mexican chocolate tastes different from normal chocolate. It got a smooth feeling, strong chocolate and got some spice flavour. Very Good! I have finished it before I arrived the office! So I only have the picture of the food this time...

Walked past this restaurant when I took my Lenovo laptop to repair in Quarry Bay. Was attracted by the eye-catching design and decided to give it a try.

I ordered a Roast Pork Burrito Combo with Mexican Jamaica Tea.

The Pork Burrito is huge! Definitely a filling lunch choice. It is wrapped with tomato rice, some Mexican bean and pork. The pork is very flavorful. The combo also comes with some tortilla chips and tomato sauce to tip. It is not like the ketchup but have a fresh tomato taste.

I particularly like the Jamaica tea for its refreshing taste.

tasty food + casual and comfortable dining experience = I will come back!

I had no experience with Mexican food before my visits to Mr Taco Truck so I'm not gonna comment on the authenticity of the food here.

The first thing that catches my eye was the smart orange and yellow decor that really looks like a truck of some sort.
Having an open shopfront gives the hard-to-find alfresco experiece, or perhaps, the feeling that you're in...California?! Except that you can order in Cantonese tongue

Chicken Burrito (Half $33) has Rice, Pinto Beans, Cilantro, Salsa wrapped inside a Flour Tortilla. Half size is already pretty filling for me. Although there is lots of starch in it, the slightly pungent cilantro (芫茜) and tangy and spicy salsa brighten it up.

Grilled Fish Taco ($16) - Cilantro, Onions & Salsa, Mayonnaise, Corn Tortilla - the tortilla is served flat on the plate. Well I like the more "texturised" corn tortillas better than flour ones. The green salsa is "hotter" than the red one and of course suits my taste better.

I think the best things at Mr. Taco Truck are its Mexican drinks ($15).
Horchata is a milky-white drink made with rice, very rich and sweet like milkshake and ...OMG there's cinnamon inside! My favorite!

Jamaica on the other hand is a rose-colored rosehip drink, if you want something lighter and fruity this is the drink of choice here. Still a bit too sweet for me though.

Great place for a light meal (and people spotting!), but what a pity that it's closed on Saturdays and public holidays - this would be a great weekend hangout spot!

One of my favourite cuisines in the world is Mexican food. Actually I have many favourites lol, but Mexican really stands out in my head... smile It’s hard to find authentic Mexican cuisines in Hong Kong, make that none I’m aware of. Sure, you could find a few places selling commercialised Tex-Mex stuff, mostly made from pre-manufactured ingredients and store bought tortillas, grinded meat, Kraft quality shredded cheese and chili sauces. YAWN... sad Its equally as frustrating as seeing all those Poutine fries pretenders within HK, but somehow no one voices out about it.... sad Thanks to Mr. Taco Truck’s owners, at least you get closer to the real deal, as most things down to the chili sauce, or their flour or corn tortillas are House-made under the guidance of a Mexican consultant.

They sell what resembles Cal-Mex Mexican food, basically emulating the Californian style idealised Mexican fast food joints or trucks rather than the full Mexican Restaurant experience. Don’t expect any Mayan cuisine here – there are no hearty Pozoles or meaty dishes like Barbacoa or Birria stews, Tamales, those real food which represents Mexico. Even the hot chocolate drink sold here is not the spiced Aztec Xocoatl version.
But its better than having nothing at all ~ its a good start! Straw... sad

My new found favorite Smile Jul 04, 2010

We have more Mexican experience over here these days, be it the film, coffee (café) and the taco truck. I can assure you on the last one that it’s a very nice addition to our culinary scene here in Hong Kong.

When I first read all the reviews on openrice and other publications, I can only wonder what the fuss about this kind of food. Only after my visit I found that pictures and words did not seem to do enough justice for what they offer. Mind you that I have no prior experience with this kind of food and, definitely Taco Bell should not be counted into the same category. Nevertheless, they should expect more visits from me in the future.

As the name suggested, the shop wasn’t designed for a sit down dinner; it’s more of a take out place. You supposed to pay once you order, get the stuff and go eat at home/office, etc. I end up paying after each and every time that I ordered. A bit fun and interesting experience for me like going to a carnival for exotic foods. Nevertheless, for an uninitiated like me, I chose to sit down for their suggestion as there are a few table/stools available. The place is not the best location to sit on but works well with the theme of the place. Also, the view outside is quite interesting as it’s at the corner of the road so you can observe things.

Both grilled fish and fried fish corn tortilla were very nice and both lemon and chilli sauce added just enough zing the dish, a perfect compliment to the current heat we are enduring in Hong Kong right now. For the grilled fish, additional smoke flavor in the meat would be nice but who am I to tell them about Mexican food as I knew next to nothing about it. I was told the spicy pork tortilla was great while both regular Nacho (no meat) and super Nacho (meat and the works) were OK to me. The cheese tortilla was quite interesting; its smoothness reminded me of cheese pizza, ie easy to eat and nice. The Horchata drink was interesting and reminded me of Singapore/Indonesia's barley drink that I probably have to grow up there to appreciate it. While both drinks are not my cup of tea, Horchata definitely trumped those barley drinks all the time for me, in term of complexity, texture, aroma, you name it. For the afternoon, I would have order more varieties but all these tasted really good even I just finished my lunch.

If you have no exposure to these kinds of food before like me, I highly suggest you try it all. The interesting thing is that they close on Saturday and open in the afternoon on Sunday, like its neighbor Cook Light Café. So, a Mexican food and a superb coffee place is a great combination for Sunday afternoon. To me, the early afternoon is the right time to drop by as they are less busy and can take care of newbies better. The owner’s hospitality was great and I couldn’t say this enough as it really makes the experience a very meaningful one. Good news is that they plan a branch in the future so I’m quite happy to hear that they succeeded in their venture as this location was supposed to be more of a market testing.

Again, do drop by this place and don’t let the kind of “exotic” names and foods deter you. As if I sound like a broken record that let me stress again that the picture/wordings does not do any justice to them and I cannot find exact words to express my happiness in my new found favorite. This is the place you should drop by even it is out of the way.

Tried burrito takeaway only, taste was okay, but the incredients are rather simple, and the price was steep at $49 compared that you can e.g. go to Subway around the corner and get a set with a sub, cookies and soft drink at $29.5... I don't think this will fly too long at these prices.

I was delighted when I found out about the opening of Mr. Taco Truck.

Upon arrival when I saw the shop front and truck design, all the memory in California had come back! My friend ordered a Chicken enchilada salsa roja and one quesadilla with chicken, a cup of horchata and I ordered 4 tacos (carne asada, al pastor, pollo and carnitas). We shared a side of chips with Guacamole. I have to say that I am impressed that they actually have corn tortilla and corn tortilla chips. I saw the chef actually handmade them while I was waiting. What's more, they have HORCHATA! I love their carnitas and al pastor. They tasted exactly the same as what I used to have before. The guacamole is fresh and full of the taste of avocado. It is definitely not the packaged ones.

My friend enjoyed the Chicken enchilada very much because it is the Authentic mexican style instead of the Tex-Mex style where they just put lot of cheese on it.

Everything is good. Music is nice. Price is cheap except... i wish they are closer to Central or Wanchai. Quarry bay is really out of the way.

Tried the place on a cold day. Never had Mexican food in HK before.

    Ordered:
    chopstickVegi Burito Combo
    chopstickTaco with Chicken

    Verdict:
Vegi Burito tasted very ordinary and bland. Aren't you supposed to get a tastegasm when you eat Mexican food? I was hoping to taste all the rich flavors of Mexico.

    Taco with Chicken
This was pretty good. Albeit very small portion.

    Final thoughts
    - Pls don't charge for extra sauces mad
    - Bigger portion would be appreciated lol
    - Service was good smile

Passed by this shop for many times since its opening in Jan/Feb. Finally, I got the chance to try the food today. I ordered a Burritto Combo (with fried fish) and Jamaica as drink.
The taste is fairly good. The fried fish is excellent. I like the hot sauce and the sour taste of the drink a lot. However, it was a pitty that there wasn't any cheese inside the Burritto. As a big fan of cheese, it is a big disappointment to me. I will definitiely come back and request "cheese inside" next time.

Decided to check out this 'taco truck' as i've driven past it numerous times. Keep in mind that 'mexican' in the mind of an american such as myself is hard to come by. The only other comparable place is taco loco in central- shame the service is really bad, and the burritos are sub-par. i've also tried a mexican restaurant in the lkf tower- not happy with it at all. taco truck however is pretty good.

I ordered a steak burrito- while they included rice in it (and it's mexican style rice) along with salsa and a few other ingredients, they did charge extra to have sour cream/guac/cheese included- at least they did put it in vs. taco loco who just gives it on the side. the size of the burrito is somewhat on the smaller side, and the wrap was a little on the dry side (yes. i did take out, which supposedly creates steam to moisturize the wrap- but didn't as i found out 10mins later). I'd say the taste is pretty good- however, they need to work on placement of the ingredients. it's as if they stacked it from top to bottom- meat up top, rice in the middle, salsa on the bottom, and very little of my extra charged guac/sc/cheese spread throughout.

to make it better i'd suggest they work on how they wrap it, in addition to putting more of everything (beef/SC/guac/cheese) in it. i felt as though i had a rice burrito!

overall not a bad experience though, and hopefully they can work out these minor issues...

Mexican food? Not really... Cries Feb 20, 2010
Share with MessengerShare on TwitterShare on Facebook
I'm a big fan of mexican food, especially the street versions that are very much a part of college life in the US. When I noticed the name TACO TRUCK on a sign hanging where a local chinese takeaway used to be, I thought that if it's half as good as those I would find in the West Coast, or even border-towns like Tijuana, it would still be a great addition to the typical lunch/dinner offerings found around where I work - Quarry Bay.
Sadly, the food here is as authentic as what I would imagine astronauts would have to settle with in space - Freeze-dried, powdery, and tasteless.
To be specific, the steak in the steak taco boasts a texture as if it is anything but steak - more dehyrated beef tendons, and the pollo (chicken) in the chicken taco tastes diced chinese sauteed drumstick meat covered with pretend mexican trimmings.
What's funny is that the lady who works behind the counter proudly exclaims, "Jalepenos are extra." Let you in on a little taco-stand tradition -- salsa, pico, jalepenos, are like the air [that we breathe] in Mexican street-food culture -- without them you just have meat, lettuce, and flat-bread -- not Mexican, tex-mex... not even Filipino food.
If you're used to pretend-mexican food (or that you've never actually tasted Mexican cuisine), this may be a decent place to drop by so you can say to your friends you have tried Taco Truck (i.e. not to be confused with a REAL "Taco"). If you want the real thing, and tacos that actually tastes like tacos should, this is not the place to go -- the rice is tasteless and powdery [just like the tacos] - is it spanish rice, or just day-old rice? please make up your mind.
All good wishes for the new business, but if you want it to work, please make a trip to a city where authentic mexican street-food can be found. I have tasted better in Manila, Singapore and Tokyo
Don't mean to be critical but this is just NOT it. Pls try harder - I, too, want good mexican food around the neighborhood.

Being a big fan of mexican food, i was extremely excited about the opening of Mr. Taco Truck. I waited two weeks for this to open and I actually had a dream of eating fish tacos prior to my visit.

As I approached the joint I was impressed by the simple charm of the place and the clarity of it's menu. That being, your standard enchiladas, quesedillas, tacos, burritos...etc. How mexican can you get really? I ordered the veggie burrito, and of course my fish taco.

Man o man, was I truly disappointed. Upon my very first bite, my palette was bored due to the lack of taste as non of my taste buds registered any sensory reaction. The essence of mexican cuisine was missing. Where were my spices; cumin, oregano, paprika? The food is well short of a fiesta, and the tantilizing excitement of exotic flavors south of the border...well just imagine a Pinata. You keep hitting the darn thing, but unfortunately no candy came out!

It was an absolute joke! An utter defamation to mexican cuisine and culture. Two thumbs down. On top of that, it was $90 for my friend and my meal. You are better off going to the big commercial burger joints, you'll definitely get more bang for your buck!
