Take This Sabbath Day Smile Nov 19, 2012

Sunday lunch. Arrived to join the queue before they opened. Didin't get in first round to had to wait 35 mins for the next.

Haing got in, we quickly ordered the Kyushu ramen 九州拉麵、and charsiu ramen 叉燒拉麵, spicey miso. Watching the ramen chefs mix the soup and cook the ramen, I was impressed with their speed and efficiency. The ramen came very quickly and the toppings were quite generous. Having gone through most of the bowl, I found that there was still quite a bit left. This ramen shop's portions are large in comparison to others of the same quality bracket.

Extraordinary aspects
- Large servings
- charsiu burnt outside and tender inside. Very tasty, quite unique in HK.
- prices well below what you'd expect for this kind of quality

Ordinary bits
- The soup base underperformed given the craft the chef put into it. Not enough body to the taste.

There were people waiting well past 1 hour to be seated, is it worth that long a wait? Depends how hungr you are I suppose. For me, it was worth the 30 minute wait.

Good ramen in YMT Smile Nov 12, 2012
Share with MessengerShare on TwitterShare on Facebook
I've passed through Yau Ma Tei a couple of times, and each time have seen long cues outside a cool little japanese place called Yokozuna just off nathan road in a small side street. Cool funky wooden panelling and a neon name certainly sets it within the bounds of Hong Kong hipster. Also... the queue...

Hong Kongers love a good queue. But people will only queue for two reasons in Hong Kong. 1. There is free stuff being given out. 2. Queueing for really good food. One glance at the small crowd waiting outside and that's all the convincing I need to go, even if i'm not hungry.

Seated after about 20 mins, which isn't so bad. The whole dining space seats around 12 people max. Themed like a japanese izakaya, but with less personal space. Yokozuna have a fairly large menu but the main order of the day here is ramen. I pick the 'Yokozuna' ramen (their signature dish I guess?) with a spicy bean paste (toubanjian) soup base. This'll put it fairly on par with what I ate at Ippudo a few weeks back, and at around the same price it makes for a good comparison.
Nice
Nice

chopstickThe noodles are rather tough and al dente (as they should be) by default (you don't get a choice like Ippudo). Inside the soup are nice healthy slices of quite fatty pork, bean shoots, seaweed, radish and spring onion. The soup is only slightly spicy, but thick and verrrry rich. I find it much richer than Ippudo's spicy base, and though the portion sizes are around the same, you come away from a bowel of ramen at Yokozuna feeling much more full. For $59 I reckon it's definitely a good deal if you're around Yau Ma Tei and dont mind waiting to get in, just beware of the rather cramped dining conditions.

What does a guy do on a Sunday evening with some time on his hand Queue.

I see a huge queue every time I walked past Yokozuna so I decided to give it a go when I have some time. It was pretty early (around 6:30) so I "only" had to wait for 30 minutes. The restaurant seems to have quite an extensive selection of ramen as well as side dishes.

Most seats are counter seats and a bit crowded, which is normal for a ramen joint. Very attentive and polite service.

Once again I decided to try out their spicy ramen (I've been trying to find a similar taste in Hong Kong after trying an excellent spicy ramen in Japan). The ramen arrived 5 minutes after I've placed my order. The default noodle texture is medium (I think you can make special requests in this shop).

The soup base is pretty mild and thin and is more sour than spicy. It matched with the fresh vegetables with the noodle as well as the char siu - generous portion and a bit lean.

I believe the focus of this shop is to use fresh ingredients and to adopt a more healthy cooking method, i.e. less salt and less oil.

Good choice for most who like healthy living but not for those who want to get a "kick" in their ramen.

It's worth a 30 minutes wait but not for too long.

Having said that, I might return to try their original ramen.

I lived in this area for many years. But I have only eaten at this restaurant for a few times. It is because that whenever I am hungry and walk pass this shop, there were often a queue outside. Naturally I went across Nathan Road to the other many many tasty restaurants. Occasionally, I dined here at the after peak hours when there was nobody waiting outside. But even though I can get a seat, which is not comfortable as people sit elbow to elbow, I need to wait for 15 minutes to get my food. And please be sure that the orders has to be done in one shot or else, double the waiting time.
Ramen is tasteless unless with good soup. I guess their ramen is not of the best quality but the way they process it with the soup has raised the overall scores of the noodle. The half boiled eggs are handled so well and simply cannot miss.
It is good to try once in a while.

Taste: This is probably the 15th time I have visited this ramen shop. It has ALWAYS been my favourite and I have recommended this place to alot of people. last time I came here was probably in Oct 2010. Visiting here again in 2011 have somehow changed my mind about this place is best place for ramen. I have recently paid a visit to 豚王 Butao Ramen http://www.openrice.com/restaurant/commentdetail.htm?commentid=2141604. It is being called the most authentic ramen in Hong Kong. i went there and still thought the ramen here - 橫綱 Yokozuna is the best. So today I came back here to relive the memory. But i finished the ramen and thought, have I changed or have the ramen here have changed?

i no longer think this is the best ramen. having had the chance to try 豚王 Butao Ramen in Central, 橫綱 Yokozuna seems less authentic. Firstly the soup at 豚王 Butao Ramen is much thicker and even if you ordered less thick, the actual taste of Pork bone is more stronger. you can tell it is really made from quality pork bone and hours of cooking the broth. where as the soup in 橫綱 Yokozuna is good and strong flavour, you can tell it is less authentic. and when you have finished the soup you feel thirsty, in need of alot of water whereas Butao you do not need to. I must say, the soup from butao beats the soup broth here. And you need to have tried the both to know.

Service: I was quite disappointed this time coming here. I realized the people have changed. there are ne wpeople working in the kitchen and the service was REALLY SLOW. I waited over 15minutes for my ramen, that never used to happen back in the days. I waited and waited. the extra egg came first and waited with me for another 10 mins. I was not please. When i was ordering, i specifically told the order a few times do not give me a specific ingedients in the ramen. when my ramen came, they forgot about leaving it out. i was deinately not happy. They are so much slower now and it is not good for a small ramens hop like this especially waiting for a whole hour to be seated.
Tea was not refilled regularly.
4 PPL IN KITCHEN still so SLOW
4 PPL IN KITCHEN still so SLOW

Conclusion:But i still prefer the noodles here at 橫綱 Yokozuna. I order the thick noodles everytime, and it comes al dente every time. the noodles at Butau is much thinner and abit like beijing Dam dam min. i do not like the texture.

EGG
EGG

i can't decide which out of the two is my best choice. As one wins in the soup and one wins on the noodle. But what i know is, they both need to line up for 1 hour or more. But here, at least you know you can line up and get a ramen, at butau, the only sell up to 200 bowls a day. So you need be early or no ramen.

Share with MessengerShare on TwitterShare on Facebook
Date: Monday 13th sept 2010 10pm

Ordered: 九州拉麵 $47 加味蛋 + 味玉拉麵 $42

Taste: I had my 九州拉麵 which is number 1 on the menu. it smelt so good without even tasting it. i usually grind ALOT of white sesame on it to make it even more tastier!!!
i notice there is a slight difference to the ramen since 4months ago when i have eaten it. Instead of beans they give you some other greens, and they give you a much generous amount of toppings. there is alot more sweetcorn, beansprouts, and greens!!! I LOVE THAT> As I prefer more toppings than ramen. Although the Ramen is still so damn good.
I ALWAYS request THICK ramen, it has alot more texture and it is always cooked right. Not too hard, not too soft. I notice this time there is more ramen aswel.
i love their eggs as well so I always request eggs on my ramen as it does not come with. the downside is the roast pork is bit too fatty for me, but majority of people would love it as it does melt in your mouth straight away

I NOTICE THEY NO LONGER SERVE YOU WARM TEA NOW, THEY SERVE A GLASS OF COLD WATER

整體質素有下降之感!!!
The noodle is too salty.
The floor is dirty and wet. The toilet is smelly.
Employees eating and joking within the sight and earshot of customers.
It seems the Japanese sifus have left. All I saw were some youngsters acting like apprentices~~~lack of typical Japanese professionalism.
Will not visit again within one year.

Ramen ya Smile Jun 06, 2009

Haven't been back to this Ramen shop for at least 5 years, probably 7 or 8.

Had the Shio Chasyu ramen. The soup base was actually slightly more Hong Kongnised than I'd imagined, as it had more brothy taste than salty taste, also the noodles were half away between Kyushu and Tokyo style ramen. Round, thick and right amount of chewiness.

I enjoyed the non-rolled chasyus here as they were tender and fatty but not overly so.
Not as good as Sapporo ramen near IFC (and heard they're opening a new one in Tai Kowk Chui soon), but a very good alternative nonetheless.

Love the half cooked eggs - which is rare to find in this side of town! GREAT. smile

High '4' but slightly Hong Kongnised in Taste nowadays. The reason I say that is because in Japan, some of the 'ingredients' in the specific broth based bowls wouldn't have appeared, if it was served to a Ramen purist. But that's another long story...
Another Great Ramen in Hong Kong!

Haven't go to this shop for almost one and half year. But the taste still very good. Arrive at 6:30pm. Need to wait almost 30min for available seats. Price range around $32-$48 for a bowl of noodle.

Order one egg noodle and one yokozuna noodle. I recommend to choose the noodle with "Pork Bone" soup. It is more tasty.

I think the only Japanese Noodle shop can compare with this one is the one in one of the basement TST East. But it is more expensive.

After doing yoga, we went to this Japanese Ramen restaurant. Every time we walked pass, it was always crowded with people. But no queue on Sunday tea time, so we could finally have a try.

My fd chose curry beef rice with corn soup ($38): Haha curry and beef was his favourite. Curry was little spicy and of very Japanese style. Hard to find beef out of the curry sauce!!! Corn soup was just ok, just like the one from 家乐牌.

I ordered 叉燒拉麵($42): 叉燒was very hard and thin…the soup was quite salty…麵ok有咬口

棒餃子($23): Only 3 pieces but it’s tasty and not too oily. Highly recommended!!!

I was a bit disappointed as I was always amazed by the queue. However, the quality was not as good as I expected.

I tried the ramen costs $45. It is quite good and a little bit above average. Compared to other ramen shop, it's quite big in size. And I add extra $20 to have a curry rice. The beef inside is soft enough and the taste is good. While the environment and room is too small and narrow.\r
\nOverall, it is a relatively good Japanese shop in town. But it won't be a brilliant or represent one in HK.\r
\nP.S. I think many and many Japanese food shops in HK is very common and most of thm are below standard no matter they costs a lot or not.

I visited Japan last month. I found the noodles in this shop are competable to those in Tokyo!
It's food is in Osaka style & much cheaper than those in Japan & Hong Kong for sure!
If you want to have nicer environment, I'd recommend you to go to the other shop that in Mongkok with 10 mins. walk!
