Casual Dinner Smile Jul 29, 2012

Finally got the chance to give this restaurant a try. As soon as we got in, we were greeted by their friendly waitresses. We requested for seats in the booth area and were immediately led to a spacious booth. The staffs seemed quite attentive throughout the dinner.

The quality of their sashimi were quite fresh but the most memorable dish of the night must be their hamachi and toro. The toro is extremely light pink in colour and extremely tender. Too bad toro is only taken from bluefin tuna so it is quite a luxurious and tasty delicacy. Their hamachi is also worth mentioning. Inevitably sad, I find hamachi is often overlooked. Although their hamachi is not as rich as the toro, it is still very good; with a buttery and smoky flavor. Overall their sushi selections were plentiful and the sashimi were fresh.

The dining experience was quite pleasant and I would recommend it to others.

I bought a Groupon deal for two to enjoy a 10-course set dinner and ate at the restaurant with my boyfriend.

The surroundings of the restaurant are clean and modern, but the tables are placed very close together. Not that it was a problem since we knew this wasn't a fine dining restaurant. The waiters and waitresses were very attentive and efficient. As we were waiting for our food, we noticed that the bigger tables would be quite nice for group gatherings.

The first course to come was the organic tomato salad. As my boyfriend observed, it was served very cold. Refreshing and delicious.

The second course was Japanese beans. I've never been a fan of these, and I was not swayed this time either.

The third course, hand-rolled onion toro, was one of the highlights of the meal. The seaweed was crisp, the onion toro tasted great and there was a mound of wasabi for me to enjoy it with.

The fourth course was the sea urchin sashimi. The previous times I tried sea urchin, I disliked it. However, I enjoyed the sea urchin sashimi served at Habitat. Perhaps I'm acquiring a taste for it.

The fifth course was a hotpot with Norwegian wild salmon head. The meat on the fish tasted pretty good, and there was nothing wrong with the hotpot. It just didn't really strike us as Japanese. With the spicy cabbage making up the bulk of the hotpot, it really seemed more like Korean kimchi hotpot.

The sixth course, Japanese-style seafood fried rice, was alright. I liked the fact that it wasn't greasy, but by then, I was getting full so I didn't finish it.

The seventh course was fresh burdock miso soup, which tasted okay.

The eighth course was spicy Japanese cheese tonikokoman. Very similar to okonomiyaki, which I don't like at all. But the tonikokoman wasn't drenched in sauce the way okonomiyaki tends to be, and it was a pleasant surprise. The cheese tasted especially good.

The ninth course, grilled minced chicken skewer, was another highlight. Being a fan of chicken cartilage, I enjoyed the chewy bits in the skewer immensely.

We didn't eat the tenth course, ice cream, as we were full after nine courses.

Would I go back to Habitat? I'd definitely consider it if I'm in the neighbourhood.

Nothing special Just OK Sep 19, 2011

I've been wanting to try this place out for a long time and maybe it's my bad luck, but every time I call, it's full. I was very excited when I called and they had a table available for us. When I got there, no need to wait, there were quite a few tables available.

We ordered a salad, some sushi and some rolls.

The food here wasn't bad and the prices were quite reasonable. The only thing that I didn't like was the staff is a little bit pushy about their "daily specials", which meant the more expensive fish that is flown in the same day.

I wonder if it was a chain reaction that, the groupon meals I had always failed badly. A month ago, I was tempted by this groupon dinner called 融會東瀛珍味:以 $299 享受柊亭料理<柊之二人套餐>,十道菜包括海膽刺身、Toro手卷 (原價 $868) at the Habitat Japanese Restaurant. I bought it straight away and decided to try it out with C.

The restaurant itself looked pretty decent and authentic, but the emptiness of the restaurant shocked us. It was around 7pm when we arrived and there were only a table of 2 among the empty seats...perhaps that was why they needed to have groupon promotion. Nevertheless, we did not quite like the setting: the hygiene was below average as we spotted some trash and dirt around us; also with the extremly cold air conditioning that had us freezing the whole evening. It was not pleasant at all as any customer walking into the restaurant would expect the restaurant to live up to its 'presented' standard. huffy

Due to the unfavourable lighting of the restaurant, C was not able to capture all the photos of the dishes. Therefore I shall pay special attention to the dishes without the photos, in order to effectively comment on them in words.

chopstickThe first dish was the Cold Tomato Salad (凍番茄沙拉) - it was quite a refreshing start. The tomatoes were fresh and sweet along with the Japanese Salad dressing. A good appetiser to get my digestion going!
    葱toro手卷(左) & 原板馬糞膽刺身 (右)
    葱toro手卷(左) & 原板馬糞膽刺身 (右)

chopstick The next came the 葱toro手卷 & 原板馬糞膽刺身 . The 葱toro手卷 were acceptable, the spring onions and toro were alright though nothing too surprising was spotted. Yet whenever I have 手卷 I am very aware of the quality of the seaweed as it represents whether the 手卷 is freshly made or not. Clearly, to me, this 葱toro手卷 failed in being freshly wrapped as the seaweed has gone hard and not crispy at all. As for the 原板馬糞膽刺身, I dare to say it was the worse dish of the night! When I bought the groupon, the photo of this dish shown on the site was relatively big in size and nice, but the reality of the dish was nothing comparable to that. Fine, I might have deceived by the photos. But the worst came when we actually tasted it, it was absolutely disappointing! huffy The 馬糞膽刺身 was soggy and plain. It instantly melted into a pile of nothingness in your mouth! We had no idea what we were eating and we weren't even able to pick them up from the plate as it gone soggy even by picking them up! huffy

chopstick One of the side dishes was 日本毛豆. We didn't like it as well. It was too salty - we could actually spot the large amount of salt they sprinkled on top of the beans...shocked

chopstick The 黑蟹子燒餅 was average.. the flavour was just right but the texture was not impressive. The excessive use of flavour has thickened the base of the pizza, and having it overcooked have made the texture gone very sticky and hard. sad
    免治雞肉棒
    免治雞肉棒

chopstick Comparing to the previous dishes, a slightly better one must be the 免治雞肉棒. I quite liked the teriyaki sauce they used and it was a decent dish to serve. Though C did not like it too much due to the lack of softness of the boneless chicken part. We both thought the taste of the dish was satisfying.
    三文魚頭野菜鍋
    三文魚頭野菜鍋

chopstick Thank god as the meal progressed towards the end, there was something that we actually liked - 三文魚頭野菜鍋! There were lots of ingredients inside the pot such as assorted vegetables, mushrooms, tofu and most importantly, the quite-luxurious cooked salmon's head! Both of us loved it as the ingredients were of a fine quality and blended in with the taste of the soup very well. Though the soup was slightly spicy (taste of kimchi somehow?), it was actually great in keeping us eating! lol
    海鮮炒飯
    海鮮炒飯

chopstick Two bowls of 海鮮炒飯 were served with the hot pot. Despite its softness of the rice, it tasted quite like the normal fried rice that one could find in a cha-chan tang (茶餐廳). There were not much ingredients found inside the bowl - generally, quite a plain bowl of fried rice.
    Green Tea Ice cream
    Green Tea Ice cream

chopstick Last but not least, the green tea ice cream. From the groupon website, the dessert was very nicely shown to be some cups of Dryers ice cream and something else that looked fine. However, it turned out to be nothing of that sort. When the bowl of ice cream was served, it was extremly HARD! Like it was the hardest ice cream I ever had in my life - like a rock, and by the absolute coldness that I could feel from a slight touch of the bowl...all I could do was to give a cold laugh at the end of my meal.. sadsad Do they expect customers to eat it straight away in such a condition? Or wait for another 2-3 hours?

By the time we once again felt disappointed just by feeling the ROCK-ALIKE ice cream, C and I were so COLD (because of the air conditioning) and DISAPPOINTED that we did not even bother finishing the icecream, but to pay the bill and left immediately. Never would I return to Habitat again. It made me wonder could they survive any longer even by the strategy of promoting groupons with such standard of food and setting? I'm sorry but in no reasons could I persuade myself to like this restaurant..sad

    Unimpressive Cries Jul 29, 2011
Share with MessengerShare on TwitterShare on Facebook
The reviews of this restaurant were pretty good, which led us to get a coupon we found for the restaurant - it was HKD300 for a "10"-course meal for 2 people. I understand the impetus for using the coupon to publicize your business, but if you are going to do it, do it right. I think the entire meal + service + experience was a solid 4/10.

    Food:
Not good generally. Tomato salad - standard. Edamame - standard. Tuna hand roll - this was pretty good (the best thing of the night). Uni plate - I knew it would be bad, it was bad. Tasted like victoria harbor. Seafood fried rice - soggy. Kimchee sukiyaki fish soup thing - never had this in Japanese food before, don't even know what it was. "Okonomiyaki" - tasted like plastic not sure where they got their recipe. Kushiyaki - chicken + cartilage, was about 90% cartilage, like chewing knuckles. Miso soup - came with a half a bowl, not great. Mango ice cream - ok.... After the meal, looked at the menu to see how these items were described - don't think I saw any of them on there.

    Service:
Udnerstandbly they were getting a lot of customers at this time who were using the coupon. Good for them. They did not handle it well. Impossible to make my reservation - tried saying the coupon codes - took like 20 minutes. I don't know how better to communicate a string of letters and numbers, but it was not fun. They only had two seating times - 6:30 and 8 - should have told us before we bought. They shuttled us in like cattle, food came in shotgun bursts one after another - no time to digest, no greeting, no time to enjoy (not that there was much to enjoy anyway). We asked at the very start if we could substitute the Uni because we knew it would not be good (given the price point we thought we could get anything instead of that and it would be okay) - but they were adamant you could not change the set. They did not tell us why. Basically, the whole meal was like a fancy sit-down setting for a box dinner you get from 7-11. I've had better tasting bento boxes from 7-11 in japan though, sadly. One very nice plus, though, was that the sushi chef (we were sitting at the bar), after seeing us ask about the Uni several times, and after seeing us eating only a fraction of each dish, offered to give us a plate of salmon sashimi! Very very nice of him, we didn't want him to get in trouble though so we declined it.

    Bottomline:
Pros: nice sushi chef, tuna hand roll was good, probably menu items are also equally good, ambiance
Cons (all related to the coupon): food + service

Would have much rather preferred a more expensive coupon deal, or something simpler, fewer 'courses', and a taste of the actual menu, if they wanted me to come back.
