No service, no queue  Nov 06, 2012

When we (me and my husband) arrived to the restaurant they said us - we have a window table, but minimum charge is 500 HKD per person plus service charge OR you can wait for about half an hour for regular table. We preferred to wait at the bar.
When 50 minutes have passed and we saw two group who occupied tables before us, we asked - when you will provide a table to us they just said - you don't have a place in a queue! They just forgot about us!

Never visit this bar and restaurant again. It don't deserve any Micheline star ever!

Conveniently situated in iSquare in TsimShaTsui and readily accessible by MTR, Nanhai No.1 is known for its reliable, tasty contemporary Chinese cuisine, charming and idyllic interior design and its panoramic sea view.

Nanhai No.1 is named after the pioneering Chinese naval explorer Zheng He’s 15th-century ‘treasure fleet’ Nanhai No.1, and this name is a metaphor for a culinary voyage of exploration inspired by the sea. This restaurant is part of the Elite Concepts group, whose other distinguished ventures include ye shanghai, cinecitta and 1/5 nuevo. Nanhai No. 1’s chef used to work at the reputable Chinese restaurant, Lei Garden, and praises heaped upon the delicate Chinese soups on the menu. Unfortunately, we didn’t have any soup when we went, as we only knew about this after our visit. The high standards of food has earned Nanhai No. 1 one Michelin star in 2012.

When I called the restaurant to make a booking, I was told that tables by the window would require a minimum spending of $500 per head. I personally thought it was a rip-off, as you should not be charged extra for the sea view which is one of the major attractions of the restaurant! We opted for a table further from the window, and the view was still spectacular where we were. However, apart from this initial glitch, everything else was great, and the food at Nanhai No. 1 was very moderately priced for a Michelin one-starred restaurant.

The waiter who served us was sincere and welcoming, and eagerly recommended many stir-fried and pan-fried dishes to my friends who were visiting from London. He was perhaps stereotyping a bit when he suggested that foreigners prefer fried dishes, but I thought he had good intentions!

    (1) For appetiser, we had a Crispy Shredded Yam ($48) which was elegantly perched on a white porcelain dish. It was beautifully fried and gorgeously crispy, and what I particularly adored was the thick, syrupy sauce which turned this savoury dish into a sugary relish!

    (2) What followed was this Honey Glazed Pork ($118). The meat was incredibly tender, and was matched with a marvellous soy sauce that was a touch sweet. My friends from London thought that it was simple and brilliant!

    (3) It was love at first sight with this Camphor Smoked Duck from Chengdu ($160). The meat was velvety, and while most ducks I eat tend to be fat-laden, this one was not fatty at all! The duck had an alluring smokey and soy sauce taste, and there was just so much depth and finesse in its taste! I also enjoyed eating the adorable steamed buns that we used to sandwich the duck, which were sweet and puffy. Try, however, to eat the buns quickly as they become cold and dry after a while.

    (4) This tangy Pan-fried Oyster Cake ($148) had a fantastic crunch on the outside, while the inside was filled with pillowy, soft and smooth baby oysters. Dipped in a homemade Thai-style sweet and sour sauce, this dish was an addictive oriental delight!

    (5) This classic Pan-fried Noodles with Scallops and Tender Greens ($158) showed off the chef’s techniques and was excellently crispy and well cooked. I personally adored eating the slices of bamboo shoots (“筍”), which were refreshing and had an appealing crunch.

    (6) The Pan-fried Rice with Shrimps and Cheese ($160) looked a bit pale, but the strong flavour of butter made it incredibly delicious! This is definitely one dish that would make all dieters cringe. It was expertly pan-fried, and the prawns were crispy and succulent. My only complaint was that while the butter taste was abound, it was deficient in the taste of cheese.

    (7) For dessert, we ordered this delicate Wolfberry and Snow Fungus with Osmanthus Pudding ($48). It had a refreshing and floral taste, and my friends T and M thought it tasted like iced-tea jelly!

南海一號 is one of the top restaurants at I-square, but definitely not my ideal preference. It is because the restaurant has consistently provided horrible services, and more importantly, there is always room for improvement in a negative way – it only goes downhill. The restaurant is a fusion Cantonese restaurant with modern décor. The high ceiling with the Victoria Harbour view is the best way to enjoy your dinner.

Today, is the first time ever I have made a reservation in a restaurant that we have to wait 40 minutes to be seated in a sister restaurant of 南海一號, you must be kidding. Moreover, we have ordered 5 dishes and 2 were sold out, and we made substitute, and it was sold out again. Jesus, it was not our fault that we were seated at 9:15pm when the reservation was at 8:30pm.
At least the food was up to Michelin standard, but it was certainly not the best dining experience. Austin, tell me what happened?
    Cuisine: Nostalgic Cantonese Cuisine

    Food rating: 6/10*
    Service: 2/10
    Ambiance: 8/10

    * Food Rating: 6/10 is equivalent to 1 Michelin star, 8/10 to two Michelin stars, and 9/10 or above to three Michelin stars

    Roasted duck
The flavour was brilliant. However, the skin wasn’t crispy and the meat wasn’t tender enough. Such as shame that Peking duck sold out.

Poached Bitter Gourd with Ginko nuts and bean curd skin
We asked the kitchen to poach the bitter gourd softer than usual, nicely done. The broth was rich and delicate. The bean curd skin gave the dish some texture. More importantly, the bitter gourd and the bean curd skin have soaked the flavour of the broth, a mild dish go with a heavy night.
    5/10

Braised fried tofu with wild mushroom
This dish had a very strong body. Tofu was soft and the gravy was nicely balance, wasn’t over powered nor seasoned. Probably one of the best tofu dishes at 南海一號.

    Pan-fried black pork with soy
This was probably the best dish of the night, yet probably one of the simplest dishes! The quality of the pork spoke for itself, fresh and tender. Pan-fried it with the soy sauce, it was a dish to perfection.
    8/10

    Cheese and Prawn pan-fried rice
It was such a shame that the龍蝦湯泡貴妃飯 was sold out too, hence we ordered 芝士大蝦煎飯 instead. The prawns were nicely sautéed with cheese, yet it wasn’t heavy at all. It was fried and then pan-fried. It was slight burnt on the outside and dry inside, very innovative. It wasn’t a bad substitute at all, wroth ordering.
    6/10

Despite the lovely service, the food is still worth trying. My advice is to visit the restaurant on a weekday, when it is not busy. Because the restaurant cannot handle a full house, unless you have the time and patient to tolerate the 5-stars service at 南海一號.

Retro Dim Sum Elegancy Smile Apr 19, 2012
Share with MessengerShare on TwitterShare on Facebook
2012 is all about RETRO. Retro Fashion, Retro Hair, even Chinese restaurant Nanhai No. 1 followed this trend and offer a range of retro dim sum! Dim sum nowadays is all about creativity and packaging, Nanhai decided to bring back some truly traditional but left behind dim sum to us, and how could we not pay a visit?

Nanhai No.1 is located at iSquare 26/F, a prime location to overlook the magnificent view of the Victoria Harbour. Upon arriving the reception of the restaurant, I saw the receptionist wearing a stripe tee shirt. "How casual." was my immediate thought. Turns out every staff except the managers was wearing the very same stripe tee shirt to align with the cruising theme. The theme is implemented from huge dinning room decoration to small individual utensils such as chopsticks holder.

The tea was something worthwhile to mention. The tea is called Nanhai Tea, which is a house-mixed of two tea leaves. The combining taste was very refreshing and sweet in the throat.

There was also complimentary crackers on each table before meal. The crackers were very crispy and flavourful with strong shrimp taste. We would love to have another basket but there was no refill. sad

Not everything on the retro menu was interesting, so we only ordered 6 of them. They did not have the english translation, so I am just listing the ingredients here. The english names might be a bit putting off but the chinese name was poetic.

    1) Chicken Shaped Liver Dim Sum (蔥油風肝酥) $20 e.a. (10/10)
Very scrumptious dim sum. The dim sum shaped like a little chicken to imply that it holds a liver in it, which is cute. The liver taste was strong, it tasted like foie gras but a bit drier. The puff was very light and thin, it was mostly filled with the liver.

    2) Fried Duck Brian Cake (窩燒鴨腦餅) $30 e.a. (7/10)
Sounding disgusting, the dim sum actually tasted nice. There was no fishiness or any sort of disgusting taste or texture in it. It tasted just like minced pork cake but much saltier. i guess the saltiness was to kick the fishiness away? Interesting dim sum.

    3) Shrimp with Quail Egg (彩鳳隱籠懷) $30 e.a. (9/10)
I like how the dim sum was presented, it looked beautiful. The shrimp was wrapped around a halved quail egg, breaded and slightly fried to give a crispy texture. The sauce on top had soften the crispy layer a little but gave a great taste to it. The overall texture was quite nice.

    4) Pork Belly Bun with Shredded Pomelo (柚皮火腩夾) $20 e.a. (5/10)
The bun had a small piece of pork belly inside. The pork belly was savoury with some fatness in it, but it was too small to give a vivid taste to the bun. The Shredded Pomelo was generally weak in taste.

    5) Deep Fried Banana Roll with Red Bean Paste (脫衣換錦袍) $48/3pcs (8/10)
The roll was very sweet but I like it. The banana was mashy and the red bean paste was smooth. The caramelized pastry was delicious and enhanced the overall texture.

Crispy Rice in Lobster Soup (龍蝦湯泡貴妃飯) $168 (8/10)
The crispy rice was delivered on a separate dish, so they could make the impressive cooking scene and "wow" us lol. There were also cooked rice in the bowl but the crispy rice sure enhanced the overall texture of the bowl. The soup was delicious, it had a vivid lobster taste but the meats inside the bowl was shrimp...Who moved my lobster? lol

Nanhai Oyster Cake (南海前蠔餅) $148 (5/10)
The oyster cake had a crispy golden breading but a moist inside. The amount of oyster was generous and tasted fresh in the cake. However the cake went soggy very fast half way of the meal, the Chinese dai Pai Dong in Causeway Bay definitely did a better job than them.

    FINAL COMMENTS...
It was interesting to taste traditional dim sum that cannot be found easily in Hong Kong nowadays due to popularity and a switch in taste. I love how nicely Nanhai shaped their dim sum, I bet no girls could resist the cute little birdie (while my dad once refused to try at first due to its look but love the taste after his first bite lol.) Nanhai did a great job in offering scrumptious dim sum and dishes, my family were interested in dinning here at night and we are definitely coming back again.

We decided to go out for lunch in the last minute. I was originally planned to go elsewhere, when those places were full. I wanted to find somewhere which is more unique, we have never been and memorable since my brother is in town. The name of this restaurant suits me very well since I work in a maritime industry. 南海一號 (Nanhai no.1) is referring to a junk which was built and sunk in the Sung Dynasty near Fujiang (福建泉州) province. The town was part of the maritime silk route for trading especially tea and porcelains. These characters could be found in the restaurant as part of its decoration.

The restaurant is located on the 30th floor of the building. Half of the venue is covered by glass windows. You could see an authentic Chinese furnitures from reception to the tableware. If you paid extra attention, you could see an antique compass displayed on the reception table.

We ordered mainly dim sum such as prawn dumplings (蝦蛟), Sui mei (燒賣), Crispy prawn and rice paper rolls (蝦米卷腸粉)
    Prawn rice paper rolls
    Prawn rice paper rolls

, Seafood fried rice (荷香炒飯) and few more deep fried dim sums. I especially enjoyed the rice paper rolls. It was crispy enough, beautiful wrapped in layer. The outer part of the roll is thin and transparent (晶瑩通透). I also enjoyed the prawn dumplings, same as the roll, the pastry is thin and smooth. You can see the filling clearly wrapped by the pastry.

The service was excellent. They tend to recruit young staff and they all dress in sailor style uniform. I would like to go back to try dinner menu.

A waste of time Cries Jan 12, 2011

Went as four-some on a random Friday night. When you enter you will enjoy the environment and ambiance of the place, its hip and its sorta loungy, as you walk in though you'll be a little confused as to what this place is. On one side you have a bar, on the either side its a restaurant, they're not separated so essentially you're kind of in a Chinese style American restaurant (ones with a big bar up front and tables in the back). Anyway, since it's our first time we just tried the basic food. I specifically remember we ordered 雞絲粉皮, nothing special. I don't even remember what else we ordered because it took a very long time for them to arrive (over 30mins), and the restaurant was not full. Plus the staff was unresponsive when we asked about our orders. So by the time we got all our dishes, we didn't bother getting anymore even though none of us were full (not even the girls). It got to be about 100/head, which is cheap because we barely ate anything. And to curb my hunger I ordered an overpriced hotdog/popcorn combo at the Elements theatre.

Do yourself a favor, just go to 朝陽飯莊down on the 27th floor. Much better food overall.

First time visit  Cries Oct 12, 2010
Share with MessengerShare on TwitterShare on Facebook
When we entered the restaurant, the first thing we noticed was the view and decor of the place. Spectacular view with very trendy decor indeed. Referred by a friend of mine, i was very exciting to read the menu. The menu was standard but a bit pricey and we read for 15 mins, still couldn't figure out what to order. Then we decide to order something very basic and simple considering that that would be the safest way to do being in a new restaurant. The two appertizers Cucmber with garlic was good, crispy and well marinated, the beancurd with mushroom & vegetable was very disapppointed, the beancurd was hard and chewy!!! For main, we ordered tofu with crab meat gravy which was exceptionally good despite the unappealing presentation, then vegetable with garlic came in nice and hot which came in late but definitely entice the whole meal. The most disappointng dish was the steamed bun which came in cold and hard, it looks like it was re-heated by a microwave but lacking of time.

After dinner, we thought of hanging out at the bar and had a drink before round up for the evening, however, surprisingly, the bar didn’t looks like a bar but a kid’s and picture-taking corner.

Overall service was good, staff were young and helpful with good smile. Will consider to come back to this place if I have oversea friends visiting Hong Kong due the spectacular view unless they improve the food quality.

food alright, expensive tea! Cries Aug 05, 2010
Share with MessengerShare on TwitterShare on Facebook
We (four heads) had dinner there tonight.

I arrived first. The server asked me what kind of drinks I would like to have. I replied "Long Jin 龍井". The server then said "Long Jin 龍井" is very expensive. Then I ordered "Sau Mei 壽眉" indeed.

When we finished our dinner, our family noticed that the charge for the tea is HKD112 and it is quoted as 特級壽眉 (ie. HKD28 per head).

Of course, I did not order 特級壽眉 at the very beginner nor I was shown a menu quoting the price of 特級壽眉. Is it a trick? Or 壽眉 means 特級壽眉 and they usually charge HKD28 per head for whichever tea you choose?

Hope that the owner here can respond if this message is noticed.

Talking about food, it is just alright.

I had the chance to go there to celebrate my two aunties' birthday. My brother's girlfriend made the booking at a table by the window, with a great view of the harbour at night, which was charming. However, the decor did not match the food quality. Not to say their food was not ok, it was just passable. I nearly fainted when I looked at the price of the menu! I felt painful even I was not the one paying.

Most dishes are around 500 to 600shocked. The quality was nothing to write home about. I agree that the lobster rice in soup is nice, but that was the only item on that night worth remembering, My aunty ordered their Mapo Taufu, it was just like a block of taufo with meat sauce poured on top of it and microwaved! Unbelievable they charged 498 for that!!!huffyshocked

I had to mention the service was not as high class as their decor. The music was playing so loud like a bar, we had difficulty talking amongst ourselves. They keep trying to get us to order desserts (surprisingly cheap at around 30 per item). We just had to leave and go somewhere quiet to finish the evening. The bathroom was beautifully decorated and very clean. However, this is not a place I would go again, nor even bringing my overseas friend to try. This place is gravely overpriced for what it is.

Two things are very good Smile Jul 22, 2010
Share with MessengerShare on TwitterShare on Facebook
I haven't tried many things here because I've sort of been eating the same stuff every time I come here lol.

Basically, there are two things that are really good:

    (1) Salt and chilli squid (椒鹽龍鬚) - This is seriously the best salt and chilli squid I've ever had. It is so light and soft, yet crispy. This is a must try.

    (2) Rice in lobster soup (龍蝦泡飯) - The soup has a very heavy lobster flavour to it, except there is actually no lobster meat. You won't feel too cheated though because this dish is only around $130 (I mean, lobster for $130, really?) and there's enough for six bowls. There are also a lot of prawns to compensate for it. There's a mixture of rice and crispy rice bits in it, giving it lots of texture. The soup has some parsley in it so remember to tell the waiters if you don't want any parsley.

Dim sum is alright but the selection is too small in my opinion. Just the usual shrimp dumplings, cheung fun, etc. The roasted crispy pork is very crispy but too salty.

I've also tried this tomato in broth. It looks very interesting as you can see from the photo above. However, it's just what it looks - a tomato in broth. There's also a hazelnut in the tomato, which is a bit odd.

There's a section of the restaurant that's a bar so it's possible to just come here for drinks and salt and chilli squid tongue. The ambience is also really nice because the view's amazing and the ceiling is very high.

Remember to try their "Nanhai Tea" too! It's got a very refreshing taste to it.

Bad Serice with discrimination  Jul 12, 2010
Share with MessengerShare on TwitterShare on Facebook
Went to this restaurant on Sunday with my girlfriend to ask if it would be availble for any party. At the first look, the environment was looking good and the decoration was decentlol.

Okay, the story was just to begin.
1.) Asked the manager (a guy) about the party package and the avail date. The manager said that they had held paries here before, but those people was the high-end people. (I wondered what he was trying to say)huffy.

2.) Okay fine, then I asked if any menu for the party. He didn't reply my question but said that not sure if the place was suitable to me or if I liked this place as the price for booking this restaurant was over 幾十萬 (obviously he meant that I was not affordable for this place)huffyhuffy

My gf and I felt being traated badly and walked away.
I thought this discrimination would not happen in Hong Kong but in fact it did to me today in this restaurant.

Now I understand the meaning of "Dog eyes see people down" and don't know why the owner hires this kind of manager.

I will surely black list this restaurant and will not recommend anyone comes to this restaurant.

If anyone likes the bad service or never have experience being discriminated, feel free to take a chance to have a miracle trip

Deserves a crying face! Cries Jul 11, 2010
Share with MessengerShare on TwitterShare on Facebook
I can't help but give the first crying face to this restaurant. First impression was a total disaster. We arrived late and when we got there the lady at the front desk asked whether it was ok to sit at a window table with a minimum charge or to sit at a 卡位 instead. Since my friend was in the elevator on her way up, we told the lady that we'll decide when my friend arrives 1 minute later. We we were all gathered together, the lady actually gave away our 卡位 table to other customers WITHOUT informing us. I was furious and she told me that we were late and that they had to rearrange table seatings because other customers had also made reservations blah blah blah. That conversation killed my appetite. I expect better service from restaurants of this caliber period. In the end they gave us free desserts to compensate. The worst part to my surprise was with the desserts. My friend had a 合桃露 which had a "burnt" smell. And towards the bottom of the bowl she almost ate a small piece of sharp 玻璃! We had no idea where it came from and informed the manager so they wouldn't give the rest to other customers. He kindly asked if we wanted another bowl but of course we declined. Just to be fair, the rest of the dishes were quite acceptable. Not super tasty but for the price it's better than average. I especially liked the 龍蝦泡飯. According to my friend who had been here before, their services have markedly deteriorated since their initial opening. But I guess most places are similar, services usually are best in the beginning.

So So lar   Jun 16, 2010

I booked the table 1 week in advance, to celebrate EARLY Father's day

I did not ask for the Window seat which is HKD 200 / head. Well, it is a Sunday dim sum lunch, don't think we can reach the min. when we hv few kids.- total 10 person ( Yap, HKD 200 apply to kids )

Even with 1 week in advance, they give us the WORST table in a dark corner. Stuffy & uncomfortable. .......definitely take off points fm the meal tasting.

There is actually over 10 tables for 2-4 person without the min. charge & just adjacent to the window. Pls.be sure to ask for that when you book.

you will get the best view at no. min.

Overall, I would prefer the Chinese restaurant on 31/F of the same group in terms of food quality, ambiance , service

Causal Lunch Just OK Jun 10, 2010
Share with MessengerShare on TwitterShare on Facebook
Just had a causal lunch with my friend there, the view is great, can look over the whole victoria harbour, food got no surprise, I had about couple kind of Dim sum, Shrimp Dumpling, Roast Pork Cheung Fan, Egg Tart, Vegi dumpling...etc. Seriously, Dim Sum quality are about the same quality as Tao Heung Restaurant!!! Don't expected too much on food quality, but enviornment is the selling point for people who would like to try, I recommend to go during dinner time, the view is georgous. Min charge per person is $200 if seat nearby the windows.
