My girldriend and i ate here twice, we both love hainan chicken so we ordered this and za leung.

Chicken was soft, juicy and boneless. Rice was delicious full of chicken flavor and very tasty, by far the most tasty hainan rice I had in hk. It was also served with a chinese soup, freakin delicious

We ordered this two times, the soy sauce wasnt too salty which is good, crunchy on the outside soft in the inside.

Sik sun cha siu rice
Fried egg was cooked nicley, just as pretty as it seems on the advert. cha siu was delicious. However we were only served with 6 little pieces of cha siu on a very big plate of rice. We wouldnt order this again as the cha siu pork is very little.

One of the most treasured Asian culinary creations is Cantonese BBQ Pork. Known as Char Siu叉燒, this is a common dish from a Siu Mei 燒味, a small hole-in-the-wall Hong Kong style Chinese deli, which also specializes in Duck, Goose, Pork, and Chicken. You can easily recognize these little restaurants with the meats hanging in the window of the restaurant kitchen. In the US, you can find them in Chinatown’s in large Metropolitan cities. The prominence of these deli’s in the US, is a result of the early immigrants from Southern China or the Canton/Hong Kong area. Cantonese cuisine is one of the most popular of the different Chinese variations, which also include dim sum.

When I used to live in Hong Kong, it used to take great strength and discipline to just walk by without strolling in a order my favorite meat on rice dish. The sheer succulence and tenderness of this sweet moist pork was difficult to ignore. I’ll post about one of my favorite Siu Mei’s in Wanchai, a little later this week.

Strangely enough, one of my other favorite places to eat BBQ pork was at the Hong Kong International Airport. On the 2nd floor, there used to be a restaurant called King’s Palace Congee & Noodle Bar. But unfortunately it choose not to reopen when the new recent renovations and expansions.

But recently, on a short trip, I was able to find King’s Palace, online, at another location at Festival Walk in Kowloon Tong. Though, Festival Walk is a bit far from Hong Kong island and even Kowloon, I knew I had to go. I often make decisions based on the idea that if I don’t buy, attend, or eat what I initially wanted – I know it will eat me away.

So this trip to the Festival Walk shopping mall was a must. . . even if I had to go alone, which I did. As I found the 3rd floor location, just off the indoor skating rink, I found King’s Palace – which wasn’t crowded on a mid-afternoon Saturday. The menu included lots of nice colorful pictures, as most nicer Chinese restaurants do. But I had a conundrum – a slight hesitation in ordering depended on the egg or roast pork – which would accompany the requisite BBQ pork.

I ended up with roast pork and bbq pork on rice with a ice lemon tea to wash it down. Not waiting for more than 4 or 5 minutes, my bowl of goodness arrived. The angled cut of the slices produces an appearingly larger piece. The against-the-grain reveals a glistening sweetness of the jiggly fat. I would have liked to have more fat for the moistness. The brunt edges would prove to be the contrasting crunchy texture needed for each bite.

EGG OR ROAST PORK?

But I also remember there was something else in my bowl other than rice and BBQ pork. Ah, yes. . .there was some roast pork. Idea roast pork requires a crunchy, no chewy pork rind or skin. You need the suckling pig to be young and not old (with thick & chewy thereby undesirable skin). Though it is unfortunate that these young pigs are slaughtered for this desired texture, it is for a good cause – my tummy. The meat, the white tenderness, is usually salted heavily to provide some sort of taste.

This cantonese comfort dish, with both the bbq pork and roast pork, is my personal favorite. I know King’s Palace make a wonderful, yet slightly overpriced compared to hole-in-the-wall Siu Mei’s. . .but nonetheless, it was a great treat to bring back HKIA memories (while waiting for my trip home). I have to be honest – King’s Palace was really really good. . .but it wasn’t the best I’ve had. . in fact, later on this trip – and hopefully in a day or two, I will post up the best place I had BBQ pork . . .EVAH!

It was around 5pm we were actually going to eat sushi but there were more than 30 people waiting for table. We didn't want to wait so we decided to stop in at King's becasue it was almost empty. The Hainan Chicken Rice is okay at least it is not greasy. The portion look big but they actually put alot of cucumber underneath the chicken. The BBQ Pork on rice is their signature dish I remember seeing it on TV a few tims before . The Pork itself is on the leaner side but it is very tender and it is favorful. You can tell it is good quatlity piece of meat. The Egg was cooked prefectly but I think it must had sat for awhile as it is a bit cool. I will give it an 8 out o 10 for the BBQ but personally I wish it is fattier meat. Too bad the service sucks as I have to ask for everything as the waiters were too busy talking to each other (specially for how much it was). Hope it is going to be better if I come back again...

This is a favourite place of my brother, and everytime he is shopping in Festival Walk this is a must visit for him.

So tonight I met him here for dinner. We waited for about 10 mins and was soon led to a booth seat at the back of the restaurant.

The restaurant has quite an extensive menu, all neatly laid out into sections comprising of congee, noodles, rice, BBQ meats (siu mei), snacks and drinks, so it was easy to peruse through and decide what to choose.

Since I wasn't all up for a heavy carb or protein meal (I've heard good things about their char siu though), I ordered the corn and pork cube congee and a dish of plain cheong fun, while my brother picked the wonton lo mein.

The food came out within 10-15 minutes of ordering and it all looked freshly prepared which is definitely a good sign.

My brother's lo mein was quite a generous portion of thick egg noodles, with a separate bowl of 6-7 wontons in soup. He ate it all quite quickly saying it was good and that the prawns in the wonton tasted fresh.

My congee was definitely comfort food at it's best. The rice had been cooked till it had melted so it had a very creamy texture which is how I love my congee. The corn bits were definitely fresh off the cob, with each kernel bursting with sweetness. The pork was also lean and very tender.

The cheong fun was so-so though. I mean still not bad, slight chewy texture, but near the end, it got a bit too soft. The accompanying soy sauce was really good though with a slight sweet tone mingling with the saltiness.

All in all very satisfying. Will definitely come back for the congee and to try their char siu farn

There is only one word for this place-----"CRAP"!!!

The service is crap; the food is crap!!!

This shop markets themselves as an UPPER market noodle shop. But the fundamental thing like customer service they can't even get it right!

I sat down with my friends for about 5 minutes, nobody bother to come around offering any tea or drinks!!!! Then when I ordered a Beef Brisket Noodle Soup, they came with a Fried Beef Han Fan. They offered NO apologies and forget to re-order the right dish for me!!!!!!!!! I sat there and waited for another 20 minutes. I had to ask a waitress the whereabout of my noodle soup, she just "sighed" and walked off!!

The order was taken by a TRY HARD "F4 member" with full head of blonde hair, fringe over his eyes and sloppy attitude. He didn't repeat my order or anything. When he was told the order was wrong, he just walked off from the kitchen door and continued to do NOTHING.

My noodles finally came, the soup was slightly pinky. The noodles were way too soft, when I picked them up with my chopsticks, they simply fell apart. So in the end, I had to eat my noodles with a spoon!!!!

Anyway, it was such a bad experience that I would never go back there again.

The quality of food and service are very ordinary. The cost is a big high. Can try once...

I went to this restaurant with my friend last week. (total 2 persons)
There were another group of THREE came after me and they've got the seat immediately. I enquired the captain about the arrangement. He answered me that two person must sit at upper level, therefore the group of three could have a seat earlier than me!
IF the table of upper level is 2 seater, it is OK..However, I noticed that ALL the tables on upper level are 4-seater! SO if the number of ppl is small..dont go to there!
