After experiencing good set lunches at a couple of Japanese restaurants such as Sushi One, I decided to try Monster Sushi with a friend during a lunch break.

Everything was fine right up to the point where I ordered my set lunch. The pictures and number of dishes for the set I ordered looked great and good value for money. I was absolutely starving by this stage, so was ready for a relatively big meal to refuel me before heading back to work.

Not only did the food take at least 20 minutes to arrive, it was room temperature. To avoid wasting anymore time speaking to the waiter and asking for it to be made hotter, I gobbled it down in order to get back to work on time. While the waiter did inform me that it would take 20 minutes, I was disappointed even more when it turned out to be an unsatisfactory temperature.

The quality of food itself was mediocre. It wasn't spectacular and definitely wasn't worth the wait. To make matters worse, the set came with a coffee or tea and me, not learning from the terrible time management of the restaurant, ordered a coffee at the end of my meal. I expected it to be made and handed to me a couple minutes after placing the order. I waited for approximately 10 minutes for the coffee until I finally cancelled it, paid, and left more than slightly annoyed.

If you're the type of person looking for a quick meal between work hours or enjoy taking your time with your food (like I do), this is not the place for you. If you have plenty of time on your hands and have nothing better to do with the rest of your day and aren't put off by eating warm food, you've found yourself a gem of a restaurant. I doubt I will be going back to this place in the near future, if ever.

Went with friend for lunch at TST. We were thinking to go to the nikishi-don on the 7floor of isquare, but I suggested that we could try something new this time..Hence we ended up at monster sushi.

There were a couple of customers in before us and we got in. No one comes to show us seats and we waited for 5 minutes before i said ok, let's just seat at the table next to the door.

then we were trying to call the waiter to order.. after 10 minutes. no one came....

the end is we felt this is enough, so we left for the nikishi-don....

It is my very first time to try it. All I can say is : Cocktails are even better than sushi
After ordering,it took at least 15-20 mins until food comes.
Salmon sushi,sadly,tasteless.
Gozilla sushi is not really special,to me.
Sliced Yellowtail with Pomelo , the only thing that I think it is worth trying.
Cocktails are not really good but at least they are better than sushi.
Ordered Tokyo and Ocean. Tokyo is not really a cocktail,it just like juice,
To sum up,won't go there again.

I had dinner at the Tsim Sha Tsui branch the other night, because a friend was visiting from Malaysia and she really wanted to try the authentic Japanese food in HK. I don’t know when it started but Honkie people are obsessed with food and everything from Japan. So HK is known to have pretty good quality Japanese food with some Honkie influences hehe.
I’ve heard good things about Monster Sushi and thought it would be a good place to bring my friend but I was so utterly disappointed…We ordered a variety of sushi – salmon, tuna, unagi, salmon roe, sea urchin and soft shell crab the lighting was pretty bad so I wasn’t able to take very good pictures.
And even though the sushi may look good…it really didn’t taste that good…the rice was very cold (too cold for my liking) and very hard! It was obvious the rice had been cooked way ahead in time and must have been kept in the fridge and it wasn’t thawed properly before it was used

I wouldn’t recommend anyone going unless you have a discount coupon or you don’t have a choice, because there are too many other good sushi places in HK ~

The first sentence of my review pretty much sums it up - If you want to pay to get pissed off by their waiter, waitresses and managers, go right ahead and visit Monster Sushi.

I was dining with my mom during lunch. We were pretty much the second table to be seated as they opened their restaurant at 12pm. We were greeted and ushered by a waitress who looked like she haven't been paid in months. Customers gradually filled the dining area as it creeped closer to office lunch hours. As the saying goes, "Early bird gets the worm". However, in our case, it really doesn't apply. Most guests who arrived (plus ordered) much later than us have already received their food and finished more than half of it. We waited more than half an hour for our sushi roll E2 lunch set. The set arrived after asking the waiter to check our order. We waited a while longer, as my terriyaki chicken lunch set was no where to be seen. Again we had to ask the waiter to check on the order. Finally, the chicken came but it was totally undercooked. It was pretty much pink on the inside. It is for sure a cardinal sin for restaurants to serve chicken that is not fully cooked after Hong Kong had been hit by "Bird flu" in the past. Once we have identified the "chicken sashimi" (undercooked chicken), we asked the waiter to replace it with Terriyaki Salmon. He took the salmon away, but he explained that the salmon set came with different appetizers and accompanying food items; for this reason he refused to replace it with salmon.

By that time, we were pretty unsatisfied, so we flagged down a higher level manager. We again explained the situation, not only did he not apologize, but all he did was feed us a bunch of excuses. Here are just a few excuses that he used:

"Oh... the wait staff is new..."

"It takes 15-20 min for the chicken/sushi to be cooked (which the servers failed to mention to us)

"The other new manager just came in"

"One of the waiter is Filipino and doesn't understand Chinese (while we communicated to him in English)"

The manager did eventually replace the chicken with the salmon. However, at that point both my mom and I were extremely fed up with the excuses. This is actually not an isolated incident of poor service according to my mom's previous experience at Monster Sushi. Not to mention that the customers around us were also quite unsatisfied. The table to our left waited for the bill for more than 10 minutes. The one to the right had to grab the dessert mochi themselves and at the same time left without their set drinks because they took too long to come. The foreigners sitting two tables to our left were never given their drinks and desserts. According to mom, it seems like they do this quite often so that they can cheap out and not give the customers their dessert or drink. Now I have experienced this first hand.

As for the food, it is mediocre at best. I guess that's what you can expect from typical Hong Kong Japanese chain restaurant. Let's begin with the sushi roll set shall we? The sushi roll was ok, but nothing special. Miso soup was an epic failure since it lacks the sweetness of real miso. Cold noodle was ok. Hot milk tea was undrinkable as it seems like the tea bag have been steeped for ages in the water.

As for the replacement salmon terriyaki set, salad dressing was ok, but on the salty side. Grilled salmon lacked the fish flavour that is found in decently fresh salmon. The miso glaze on it again lacked the sweetness of high quality miso. Iced coffee was pre-mixed with sugar water before it came and it was extremely sweet.

The mochis that came with the sets were quite flavourless as well - this includes both the black sesame and taro flavour

Lastly not to mention that the wasabi was super spicy meaning that it is a pretty poor grade wasabi mix.

Now for the clincher when we received the bill. Not only did we not get any apologies, but there were absolutely no actions from the managers to salvage the dining experience. No free item was given; A discount was not given either. As a major foodie and a consumer, I don't think that's what I'm seeking for, but I think if I were to think in a business sense (being a business major myself), that's the very lease that the managers can do to salvage a customer's dining experience. We left without giving any tips.

So again, if you want to pay for poor and mediocre Japanese food, Monster sushi is for sure a place to go.

We entered the restaurant sometime before 530pm, placed orders at 545pm and food arrived at 6pm. The wait was considerably long as there were littlepeople in the restaurant. When the food came, it tasted horribly different and not fresh. I have to say the rice was falling the moment I lifted the sushi off the plate. Having eaten sushi for most parts of my life, this was completely unacceptable. Further more the fish that was being placed in the bar top coolers were falling out and the sliding covers were never closed allowing the slices of fish to be freely aired. One of the chefs preparing the sushi had a broken nail on his forefinger and seemed unsightly preparing the sushi with his barehands, also no head chef is to be seen in the area. The chef even has a blood stain on the top of his hat, hopefully from a fish but even dared to scratch his hat with the stained part with his sushi Preparing hands.
The fish didn't taste fresh either when I ordered the salmon roe sushi, the tangy feeling when u bite into it wasn't there but instead it felt soggy. The counters displaying the fish was not even clean with stained glass. I have to admit the waiters and waitresses were very helpful and attentive in refilling the drinks and service was superb.
Sorry to say this but I'm never coming here again.

To be honest, I was disappointed by the sushi here. There appeared to be many innovative sushi combinations, with quite a lot of variety, and I was looking forward to being impressed. However, none of the sushi were of that high a quality. In fact, most tasted below mediocre.

海膽蝦之戀This sounded cool, but did not taste good. The shrimp sashimi was bland, and there was really little urchin – not enough to improve the sushi. Hence, this sushi was rather bland… Even worse, the seaweed was soggy and incredibly tough, implying that the sushi wasn’t exactly fresh, which exacerbated the blandness even more…

蒜香牛舌
I felt that this hot dish was one of the better tasting dishes of the lot. All four pieces of tongue were hot and moist and tender, with nice garlic crumbs.

和牛刺身壽司For $35 a piece, I felt it wasn’t worth it. The beef sashimi wasn’t of very good quality, and was instead tough and difficult to chew. I even had to spit some out after failing to chew through it. The toughness wouldn’t have been too bad if it had a great taste, but unfortunately, it didn’t have much taste at all.

意式三文魚天使麵卷I felt the use of angel hair instead of rice was fairly unique, and the sour-ish flavouring reminded me a bit of thai food. The salmon was somewhat overshadowed, however.

龍蝦沙律火炙三文魚卷This had a good taste of mangoes… but this is actually all I remember of this sushi. Again, the sashimi aspect of it was poor, such that you couldn’t really tell what sushi it was.

In conclusion, the essence of the sushi – the fish/ meat atop the rice – were in need of big improvement. We found that even with the sushi names listed in the receipt that was left on our table, we were sometimes were not able to identify what was what. For example, I have no idea what this was, and have no recollection whatsoever of what it tasted like :And of course, I felt that the soggy seaweed was a serious fault.

Celebrating my friend's b-day, we both are suhsi-lovers and we re-visited to Monster again in TST.

Saturday night is my ballet night with my best friend. Thanks to Le French May, lots of high quality shows staging in HK, including a highly award Ballet < Snow White>. Prior to the show, we have to eat little something yet not too full.

Sushi is always the safest choice for a light eater like me. So, we went to Monster sushi for its convenient location k11 and rising reputation. The service is fast and nice.The atmosphere is dark and sassy. Well, the food.....

First thing first, I have to declare that I am never a fan of fushion and creative cooking. And I know what to expect from these creative chef. One dish comprises a perfect match to me 鰻魚玉子. The juice of 鰻魚really blends into the sweetness of egg. This would be a succesful match to me.

But the major weakness is that most of the sushi are made in a very lousy way. There's big room of improvement for the skill of the sushi chef, literally, i mean. I can really see through my california roll because there's a big hole in it. And 鰻魚玉子is v. fragile too, i have to be extra careful not to break it. The fish are fresh enough, but the rice is not good enough compared to Senryo.

I really appreciate the level of creativity the chef put into designing new match. Yet, a decent amount of attention has to be directed to the fundamentals. Creativity is not a substitute for basic skills. U make a good sushi, then a fancy one.

P.S. just some 'cold knowledge' u know California roll is not originated in Japan! but in Los Angeles in 70s. The traditional way should not be inside-out, but nori wrapping rice! It got so popular and inspired many chef back in Japan too! So, all of us have tried fushion Jap-US food! yummy!

My friends and I went to watch a movie at iSquare this Saturday. We decided to have lunch before the movie. I had been longing to try Monster Sushi for a long time. I suggested going there for lunch as I had never been there before. Their original store in MK is always busy. Fortunately, it didn’t take us very long to wait for a table this time.

The store is in fact much bigger than I thought. Cool renovation. Unlike some typical sushi restaurants where people are packed along the sushi bar fighting for food, Monster Sushi is much roomy and comfy. It is relatively less noisy that you can actually chat with your friends.

There were a lot of choices to choose in the menu of which we couldn’t try them all at once. So we decided to order lunch sets plus other dishes. Below were the dishes I ordered:

Cutlet Beef Steak Set 吉列牛扒餐 – Had never tried cutlet in beef before and was worried if the beef be overcooked after deep frying. But it was to my total pleasant surprise!!! The steak was wrapped by cheese before deep frying. So it turned out to be very juicy. I liked the cabbage salad very much.

Seared Tamago with Eel 厚燒玉子鰻魚 – Nice warm dish. The fried egg kept the juice and moist inside the eel. Very tasty and nicely done.

Scallop Sushi 帶子壽司 – Good huge size scallop and fresh. And I have to say the soy source dish made the difference. At first, I thought the soy source dish is too big. But for eating this giant scallop sushi, their soy source dish was a perfect match!

Seared Engawa Sushi 火灸左口魚邊壽司 – I have to say this was my favorite. Hirame doesn’t have a strong fishy taste. Like scallop, once the fish is seared, the taste of Hirame came out stronger. It went even better with the source prepared by the chief. This fatty engawa sushi just melted inside my mouth!

Wasabi Ice-cream with brownie 芥辣雪糕 – The brownie was alright. But wasabi ice-cream had a different kind of refreshness like no other favors can give you.

Overall, I liked the experience and the food. A minor point for improvement would be their tea. It was lukewarm whereas I like tea in hot. But for sure I would go back to try other dishes next time.
