Thai Hotpot  Smile Jan 07, 2013

Having been a long time fan of Openrice but never a writer. Time to break my virginity after visiting this small Thai 'Cha Chan Tang" close to home.

I am a big big hotpot fan and like to discover when theres a new hotpot spot. I visited this place for lunch in the past and thought their food was decent. Few weeks back I found they had Groupon for a hotpot set of 2 on sale and decided to give it a try with 2 friends when it was freezing cold at 12 degrees out there. mad

We were seated at the quiet corner and given the menu for the hotpot set. First thing to order had to be a BEER!

My friends didnt eat spicy so we went with the coconut milk soup base plus seafood and beef sets as the ingredients. We also got to choose a pork neck salad and fried shrimp cake from the Groupon set. But the pork neck salad was a bit too spicy to handle.

We were basically expecting pretty standard stuff given the price ($138 for 2) smile . It turned out there were generous amount of food on each dish.

chopstickSeafood set: shrimps x 2 , clams, squid, few slices of fish, and fishballs, etc...

chopstickBeef set: few slices of beef, beef balls, viet ham and slices of abalone etc..

Each set was also filled with bunch of veggie, corn, dried bean curd, vermicelli and deep fried bean curd x 2

The coconut milk soup base was a surprise.. lol it was rich and creamy which was a great combo with the BEEF chopstick and the bean curd / vermicelli when it soaked up all the soup.. The seafood was ok and fresh in general (better than the frozen stuff from CDC or those fast food chains... )

The beef was so good with the soup that we had to order another beef on the side ... which was only $26 ... tongue (I took the pic after i had already taken a few slices off)

The chef ( and i guess he is the boss) came out from the kitchen towards the end of our meal asking for our feedback .. we complimented their soup base with the beef and he suggested us we could try the hot and sour soup (with "BB level" spicyness) with seafood next time around...

At the end he served us a full plate of mango with sticky rice ON THE HOUSE together with other thai coconut desserts..tongue

All in all, it was a very satisfying meal to the three of us .. high quality hotpot for $80 bucks per head (with a few beers, extra beef and veggie). I would come back again even without groupon during this cold winter (regular price @ $68 bucks per set) ..

    Keep up the good work!

    Supplementary Information:
The chef told us we could order a non-spicy version of the salad upon request.
The staff was friendly especially the chef (the suspicious boss tongue)

Thai Cuisine is along King's Road which makes it very easy to spot. I have been wanting to eat there for days already!

Finally, after working out, I went to Thai Cuisine by myself to eat dinner as I have to pick up my sister from practice at 11PM.

It is good that they have bi-lingual menu! smile I find it very difficult to order in a restaurant that does not have pictures or English menu.

    I ordered:

Ice mango & coconut milk with sago - HKD16
Ice mango & coconut milk with sago - HKD16

Thai style fried noodles with seafood - HKD48

The drink may have had too much ice so it felt very diluted when I drank.

The noodles were a bit bland, but the chili made it a lot better! I was actually enjoying the food even if it was a bit spicy (I put in chili) then I was wondering if it was worth my money or not..thay I saw all the seafood..it had A LOT of seafood!
    SEAFOOD!!!
    SEAFOOD!!!

Honestly, I was a bit worried about the amount of seafood in it and the amount of seafood I have eaten -- is it possible to have so much fresh seafood? But I decided to eat each and every clam, squid and shrimp!

This was my first and only time to eat here. I would say it is a bit pricey for the taste that I got. But hey, at least chili fixed it somehow!
