A restaurant for hoi polloi Smile Dec 16, 2012
Share with MessengerShare on TwitterShare on Facebook

It was a warm sunny and I was in a mood of having a cup of milk tea in Tsim Sha Tsui. There are many places for good coffee in the area, but when it comes to milk tea, I can't think of many placestongue. Finally, I revisited this restaurant, though I know that I can't sit for a longer while. smile
Classic Milk Tea~ must try the iced one as well!
Classic Milk Tea~ must try the iced one as well!

I can't remember how many times I have visited but whenever I come, the milk tea never fails me. First of all, the colour and the texture are right. It was not too dark because of excessive tea nor too light because of too much milk. It was smooth as a cup of milk tea should be. The container was also a replica from traditional teahouse. I believe this thick cup is the best match for milk tea.
Since I prefer hot drinks, I seldom order the iced one even in summer. However, the iced milk tea is also a must-try item. In ordinary Hong Kong style cafes, people usually put ice into the milk tea and call it iced milk tea, well, fair enough, but it will dilute the taste of the milk tea when it melts. This restaurant puts iced milk tea cube into your cup instead of pure icelol, which prevents dilution. You are guaranteed the last sip of your drink is the same as the first one!lol

I didn't order the restaurant's choice because this toast is my childhood memorytongue. When I was small, it was the best food for tea time. This toast really resembled the one I used to have. The milk and peanut butter was not spread evenly, but after using a knife to spread it yourself, you would find that the filling was more than enough. Also, the toast was chrunchy but not too hard. lol

This restaurant also made their own homemade preserved lemons for iced salty lemon Coke. It is really refreshing in summer and easy to make. The tips to success is to find good preserved lemons.

It is true that there are more Mandarian speaking tourists now in the restaurants but I don't see any problems, because every one was so busy looking at the walls and digging into their food.
This place is decorated with a lot of albums of Alan Tam, a famous singer since the 70s. Of course, this place is not comparable with the Hardrock, where there are exhibits of world stars over the century. If you want to learn more about the pop culture of the 70s' Hong Kong, it can be a place for reference.

Though the price of the food is not really that cheap, it is still economic for people who want to experience the food culture of hoi polloi. After all, this restaurant is at the heart of Tsim Sha Tsui.

Choice from no choice Cries Oct 17, 2012

Came here after craving for something to eat and nothing else appealed in this rather empty mall.

Ordered a ox tongue bun (which came with a piece of cheese not melted), milk tea (average), and a pineapple bun with butter.

The pineapple bun with butter was very disappointing and definitely not worth the price - the top layer was not sweet, in fact it was tasteless; the butter was unevenly placed in one end of the bun which I happened to eat last, causing extreme saltiness accompanied by the tasteless bun.

As for the service, there's this sign on the table which they stress the importance of customer service, however whilst we were eating, this waiter suddenly threw a wet towel which landed millimetres aside my plate - after a while he came and took it away to resume wiping an adjacent table. One could, of course, imagine how unlucky one would be if that towel landed right on my plate or on me.

    咁多間蘭芳園, 這間肯定最差勁.
    來過好幾次, 吃過撈丁, 豬仔包, 喝過奶茶同冰凍奶茶

    bowl奶茶 -
This HK milk tea is absolutely terrible. Every single time I drank this or the iced version, it is weak as and totally taste-less.... Out of all the 蘭芳園 outlets, this shop I have actually permanently BLACKLISTED. They cannot even toast their bread right. What an embarrassment to the HK Food Scene, especially knowing how many Mainlanders and Tourists living next door will come past here. 1/5 mad

I came here on recommendation from an HK local, and later on decided to bring a friend here to experience the environment.

This place is hidden away underground from the Woodhouse area.

They have various afternoon snacks, and items such as condensed milk on bread, ramen noodles with ham and egg. It was packed for a place that is so hidden. Apparently the main one is in HK Island and actually outside on the street, but this replicates the environment inside.

They are known for their iced milk teas, since the ice cubes are made from tea as well so as it melted, the drink would not get watered down. In my cup there was half tea ice cubes and regular ice cubes, I guess since it's more expensive to use tea cubes.

The whole place was decorated in signed Alan Tam posters. I guess he likes coming to this place. They have posters from 25 years ago, too, but some old posters signed recently!! (I keep wondering if he just brings a poster with him each time he comes, or does he carry posters with him everywhere?)

Anyway, the food tastes okay, but the iced tea and environment are worth it to come and check out.

There has been much hype with the LFY in central, but it has never motivated to go.

Frankly I am not really a fan of chinese food from these HK style cafes.

Discovered this old looking cafe in the newly rennovated underground mall that used to be Cybermall, so decided to give it a try.

Tried the instant noodles in sauce: one with chicken steak and the other with pork neck meat in BBQ sauce.
Both those dishes had ginger and onion sauce.
The noodles were a bit disappointing, it was rough and foamy.
If they had used Nissin instant noodles instead it would have been much better.

The lemon tea that came with it was so foul, it was so bitter I thought I was drinking coffee.

Milk Tea Just OK Dec 16, 2009
Share with MessengerShare on TwitterShare on Facebook
After hearing so much about their food, especially their cold milk tea, I decided to try it out myself. The milk tea is indeed as good as many had described but with more than half the cup being filled with ice, you're really being served only half a cup of milk tea.. Personally, feel a lil bit ripped off.

As for their food, I think their shop in Central tastes better but all in all, not bad.

Central shop is better Just OK Nov 25, 2009
Share with MessengerShare on TwitterShare on Facebook
I ate chicken instant noodles with ginger and green onion, pork chop burger and sliced steak with pepper. All these are most popular food in this shop, but I think the taste of all these dishes are not as good as the shop in Central.

The iced tea mix with ice made of water but I remember the ice used in Central shop is made of iced tea. The iced tea will be diluted when the ice melted.sad

I will go Central shop intead.

Came here post-dinner to try their milk tea and french toast.
This place was full on a friday night unsurprisingly. We knew what we wanted so we ordered straight away. 5-10 mins later our orders came.

I tasted the milk tea ($13) first, it was very good but i would've liked it to be even hotter! it probably cooled down since they must've pre-made the tea, or the evap milk was cold. BUT the taste was very strong of tea - the way i like it!

Next was the french toast ($14) with a little butter on top. I would've liked it without butter but I dont mind i guess...the syrup and the filling between the slices of bread is king here..... so fluffy and moist inside and crunchy golden outside....very good!

This store just pull down the reputation of Lan Fong Yuen.
Food is not fresh at all. The beef tongue taste and smell like rotten flesh, how disgusting. My friend had the baked fish fillet on rice. I guess they should named it as diced taro on rice instead.
