After an art jamming session, my boyfriend and I sauntered over to Hugo's for a Sunday Roast.
I was completely beguiled! Hugo's hands down serve the best roast in Hong Kong (Second best is that served at the Mandarin Grill)

Service was friendly,competent and detailed. The manager saw us with our giant paintings and offered to store them for us then kindly led us to our table.

The waiters came out with a revolving trolley of salads, there was a huge selection to choose from. So even for the pickiest of you out there you'll be sure to find something you'd fancy.Just look at that giant piece of perfection I have nothing but praise for their roast! The beef.. cooked to perfection, flavours.. PACKED, gravy.. spot on, Yorkshire Pudding.. perfectly done! Only thing missing I suppose was more roasted carrots and beans! I cannot even begin to stress how good this roast was. If you're looking for a decent Roast, do yourself a huge favour and come down here!The desserts however were rather average in my opinion

My wife had her eyes on this restaurant since she spotted it from the Michelin last year. But since I'm not a big fan of European cuisine (staying in the UK for an extended period of time might have been why ) , I've been stalling it until the dead-line, i.e. 14th March, also known as the White Valentines day. Luckily, as opposed to the other Valentines day, seats are usually easily available.

It is conveniently located at the Hyatt Recency at Tsim Sha Tsui. It's at the hotel lobby level. It's hard to miss Herr. Hugo's not so shining but impressive looking armor at the entrance, next to the large oak wooden doors, welcoming you.The restaurant was dimly lit and very European. After walking through a spacious corridor filled with silverware, desserts and fruits, we were shown to our table. The sofa was comfortable and there was a lot of space between tables. Some parts of the restaurant were separated by chain-mail like partitions. Even if our table was nearest to the entrance, you still feel being very much part of the restaurant.The menus were handed to us almost immediately, ladies first - that's a small detail but very important!

We were given plenty of time to read the menu, which I required as it is always an agonizing experience for me to order Middle/Northern European cuisines, other than German and perhaps Scandinavian food - there isn't an awful lot to choose from . One could always order something else in a Yakitori restaurant or Chinese Yum Cha if a dish tasted less than perfect. However, in restaurants like this, you only got one shot and you'll be stuck with it for the rest of the evening.

After we've placed our orders, the waiter recommended a bottle of red to us - the name now escapes me. But I think it was the house red and it was not bad. The bread basket arrived shortly afterwards. The breads were warm. The garlic bread in particular was nice and crispy. The garlic butter was spread evenly and generously on the bread. The garlic butter was sufficiently aromatic but not overwhelming.

My wife ordered the French Onion Soup:I could smell the fragrance of the onion and the beef consomme. The large piece of mozzarella cheese was baked just right. According to her, it was very good.

Then came Herr. Hugo's magician with the iron cauldron which contained the Great Red Sea Wurm's essence!

(a.k.a. the chef with the lobster soupThere was a bit of sour cream and some chives placed on my soup, as well as some pieces of chopped lobster meat. The soup itself was quite nice. A seafood soup with a strong lobster taste and a rather thick texture. Some might find it slightly salty but I think it's fine. The flaming cauldron was an interesting gimmick (flamed dishes are stated on the menu).

Then came our starters:

The scallop and calamari salad,and the Scottish salmon:I didn't think there was anything special about the salmon. It's not chilled enough for my liking and the quality was standard stuff you could get in most hotel buffets. It wasn't smoked enough too. But it was very nicely arranged and had about ten pieces of salmon. The white object at the 11 o'clock of the photo was a piece of lemon. The white piece of gauze was a good idea as it won't dirty your hands after you use it. The other garnishing in clock-wise order were egg yoke, chopped egg white, capers, shallots and hollandaise sauce. Unless you really have to, I'd suggest you order other starters.

The scallop and squid salad were quite nice. I believe the scallop was from Hokkaido (!?). Two scallops and about 4-5 calamari rings on a bed of greens and some red wine sauce I believe. The scallops were pan seared and were of decent size and freshness. The calamari rings were tasted a bit Italian, probably marinated in some balsamic vinegar and olive oil. The textures of those calamaris were very soft and easy to eat. I would have preferred them to add a little bit more of calamari though. A nice starter for those who don't eat a lot.

Then came the main course:This beef steak arrived initially without even the sauce. The sauce arrived separately. I can't really say that this piece of meat was aesthetically pleasing. It was medium rare. It seemed soft and could be easily sliced apart. The timing looked right. However, the fried whole garlic was very good. Surprisingly, it's not too oily and very easy to eat. Not a single piece of garlic was overcooked or burnt. It was extremely mouthwatering (since aromatic doesn't seem to be the right word for garlic). My wife liked it. Having witnesses the size and the look of my wife's piece of steak, I was slightly worried about my lamb chops. I specified my lamb chops to be 60% cooked, whatever that means. It arrived and I was relieved. It looked and tasted just right. In fact, I liked it a lot. I'd say it's similar to the result of a slow cook method, such as those publicized in Harlan's - only that it arrived 2 hours faster (*1). Three pieces of decent size which also came with the very good fried garlic. I can recommend this as an alternative to beef.

As a dramatic finish to the dinner, the famous and complimentary chocolate bon bons arrived on a bed of dry ice:
This came slightly after the bill, which came down to HK$2,600 for the meal plus four glasses of house red, and no doubt also acted as the "sweeteners" to sooth the pain in your wallet - a very good idea. The bon bons were very nice. There weren't too sweet but had a firm cocoa taste.

The kind guitarist sang two songs for us at the end of the evening and my wife thoroughly enjoyed it ( but which I always find embarrassing and stressful.) I offered one of the bon bons before he sang to which he politely refused.

The staff were very attentive, sometimes a bit too attentive for my liking, and energetic. Everyone seemed pretty efficient. They seemed well trained but I suggest that they slow down a notch when they are placing the eating utensils on the table. On the whole good service.

What strike me the most was the interior of Hugo's. It was really excellent. I felt like dining in a medieval hall, with good air-conditioning installed, or inside a theater with Sir Laurence Olivier ready to jump out any minute. Perfect for someone who would enjoy a sense of drama.

I frequent HK every month or 2 and I try to get my steak fix whilst I'm here. The past few times I've read reviews on here to help make a decision. Firstly, let me clarify that I'm just after good food. I generally don't care about what type of place I frequent or the price... Within reason. So this visit I was in TST and close by Hanoi road, so I chose Hugo's after reading some positive reviews on their steaks.

I arrived around 6.30pm mid week, so quite the restaurant was quite empty and I was shown straight to a table... For 1... Yes, dining alone. I've dined at quite a few high end or 5 star restaurants and I never feel comfortable with the over attentive service. But that's just me... They were incredibly welcoming and were at my side every time I flinched or look in their general direction. As the restaurant got more busy, they did thankfully give me some space and left me alone.

Ordered a sparkling water and glass of red to start... Pretty impressive wine list too. Wish I could have chosen a bottle instead I'd the by the glass selection, but the 2 I had were impressive. Prices aren't cheap... But good red isn't cheap and at least you get good quality big wine glasses.
They seemed very eager to take my order, I had to knock them back several times... Saying I was in no rush and wanted to enjoy my wine and the great bread rolls that were now given to me. The classic sourdough and whole grain rolls were also accompanied by a buttery and delicious garlic bread. Nice butter... But I didn't understand why half way through my meal, a waitress came and replaced my butter for me??! Half was still there.

Anyway, I finally felt ready, motioned ever so slightly for a waiter and ordering within seconds. I asked a few questions on their steaks, more to test their knowledge than decide what I wanted... And he passed with flying colours. He recommended me the one I was going to choose, US prime rib eye and I was delighted to learn they also had fresh horseradish... The best thing ever for steak. Ordered a sevinfg of mash too... The only thing I hate about these places when dining alone, if I want more than one vegetable I have to order extra side dishes and at $55 a dish that ain't so cool... Plus I wouldn't finish them. So let's just stick with the fav mash.

Not a huge selection of steaks... Rib eye, tenderloin and.... I forget. 2 choices of each, from different countries. The rest of the menu also looked good, was almost tempted by the rack of lamb. Big range of seafood and 2 set menus or tasting menus, well priced at about $950 for something like 6 courses, extra with wines to match. Had the usual sauce selection, plus a choice of 3 mustards. The grain mustard was fantastic and full flavoured.

Steak arrived promptly... Looked and smelled amazing. But... It tasted even better. Seriously melt in your mouth stuff, juicy and just the right amount of surface charcoal. Even though it was slightly cooked more than my medium rare request, it was so amazingly tender and tasty that I didn't think for a second of sending it back. I love rib eye especially as I want some fat in the steak... This one had just the eight amount. Definitely no pre cooking and reheating here. The mash was exceptional too, came out on its own heating contraption so it won't go cold, beautiful and creamy, smooth and perfect amount for me.

My wine matched perfectly and I had no problem finishing... But the size was perfect for me, 400grams. I even managed desert, but wasn't that impressed with my cherry trio selection, even if they came to my table to cook it. I saw a few chefs doing that at other tables during the evening, I think one even made a Caesar salad at someone's table. Good to impress a date maybe.

Enjoyed a nice 12 year old whisky afterwards, not a huge selection though. The chocolates on dry ice were pretty cool too.

All up... If you want a great steak and are prepared to pay for it, Hugo's is worth a shot. Steaks were about $500, my total for an.evening of indulgence came to just over $1000. I never feel entirely comfortable in high end places, but the restaurant did have a nice feel to it, old school colonial with a hint of medieval. At least it wasn't all white, bright and musak to boot.

This restaurant is one of the best steak places in town. I have eaten here three times in the past 3 months and can definitely recommend this restaurant. Service has been great two of the nights, while the last time, my waiter was somewhat challenged. At one point he actually got distracted during our order and just walked away. I was able to get a worthy replacement after a brief discussion with his boss, and everything went ok after this. On two occasions I had the Sirloin (new York) and my friends had the Filet cuts. In all three occasions the steaks were prepared "as ordered" the first time. The steals can be ordered medium or medium plus, if that's your desire. We ordered the special house potatoes and mushrooms for sides. One night I accidentally ordered a prawn appetizer . The restaurant's decor is that old red leather steakhouse feel. I recommend reservations.

Booked lunch at Hugo's a week ago and arrived punctually.

Have ordered 2 lunch sets with chicken and beef respectively. We enjoyed those rich appetizers from the classic trolley so much. The main courses are in high quality and we were almost full after finishing them. Afterward, we could select 2 desserts from the dessert trolley. Again, it was hard to make decision in facing so much choices.

All in all, we were satisfied not only the good quality of food but also at the dining atmosphere and high service level provided by those waiters and waitresses.

This seafood salad is nice. The dressing is very refreshing.Actually this is the second one. The first one was a bit well done and
the waiter was kind enough to change it immediately. The service is really good.
The second one is much juicier and tender.Each main course can order 2 side dishes for free.
1. Spatzle - like homemade pasta, really chewy and yummy!
2. Champagne Risotto - very tasty ! YUM!
3. Creamed spinach - very good! So creamy!
4. Baked potato - just so so.With the birthday coupon, this dessert is free.
This is the best Bombe Alaska I've ever tasted. The wine flavour has filled your palate and it stays.This free dessert is eye-catching and fun more than tasty. Yet, it still surprised us all.

Birthday lunch with my best friend who is 9-months pregnancy, better to avoid popular Sunday Brunch or buffet style with big crowds of people. It's not easy on Sundays to find somewhere nice, no crowded, non-buffet style and point-to-point location without stairs for a to-be-mom. Didn't make reservation in advance, and got a flash in mind about this restaurant. Haven't tried it after the re-opening after 5 years of moving and renovation. It used to be my classic list.

Passing through K11, entering the Hyatt and it's just on the left, from a noisy shopping mall to an European fine dining place, quite interesting.

Because it's not buffet brunch, not many people were there, only less than 5 tables occupied and we loved the quietness environment. Weather was a bit cloudy but still the natural sunlight and the comfortable interior design made up the atmosphere. They do set-lunch even on Sunday, just 3 hundred something and for free-flow of sparkling wine, only costs 4 hundred something, so it's actually very reasonable. Talking about, the portion is big, cold and hot appetizers of seafood platter, pumpkin soup and 3 items of hot dishes, potato, pie, etc....choice of a main course of roasted beef, grilled salmon, ...many nice options; plus dessert of soufflé / a dessert trolley mainly serving various cakes, chocolate cake...just by looking at the menu, it's mouth-watering.

My friend couldn't take the seafood platter and changed the cold appetizer to green salad, very nice one; and my seafood platter, OMG, was it for 1 person? Yes! It's BIG. Oysters, clams, shrimps and half lobster...delicious! Pumpkin soup was very nice, it's my favorite and we kept saying, we were having a healthy meal for birthday The hot appetizers were very nice too, especially the pie with bacon, yummy! After these, we felt full....

Main course time, we had the roasted beef and salmon, both medium, perfect! The beef was excellent, absolutely high quality. My salmon with beans were delicious too, although we were full, we finished all.

Slowly....we both ordered soufflé, which is the chef's recommendation there. Very satisfied, so good! I'm not a dessert fan but I like it.

What I really appreciated is, even some high-end restaurants do badly for lunch, Hugo's does it with heart. Will definitely come over again to try the dinner.

Enough has been written by others about its food quality and their gastronomic experience. I would like to write about my dining experience on its service and its ambience in general.

To me, Hugo of present has lost its past lustre, and it is no different than any western fine-dining restaurants. Firstly, its environment and ambience : I had not expected there to be that many guests and the tables were so closely positioned. The entree cart could just pass through between tables. We booked a table in advance, and were greeted with politely and were taken to a seat at the window. We could still hear the chatting from other tables, though. Had we been sitting in the middle of the hall, we could be hearing the conversation of the neighbouring tables. I cannot blame them for a full house for Monday lunch, and the high rent in Hong Kong.

Secondly, its service : when my friend booked the table via phone, she was greeted politely and staff proactively asked if she would like a portion of roast beef be reserved. When we arrived, we were greeted warmly and a magazine was given to my waiting friend. The overall service, however, was just average in my opinion. Although staff were diligent and polite, individual staff did not show any smile or emotion on their face. They did not even say thank you when taking the bill to us.

Thirdly, its menu : its not French anymore. Staff did not even bother to explain the main courses as they were taken to our table.

Have I been too picky ? Well, I am just comparing to my prior dining experience at restaurants overseas or locally in 5-star hotels, or even some fine dining restaurants at Soho, Central. Or was I having too high expectations for Hugo ?

We were at Hugo's on the night of my pa's birthday - after changes with our schedules, confirmation, cancellation and re-confirmation with a number of restaurants, buffet places and stuff like that in town, and also a mind-blowing brain-storming process for the most apt birthday cake for him, there we were again at Hugo's.

-Hugo's closed for quite while as the old Hyatt@TST closed down for relocation. It was a loss really, and Hugo's is a living classic: a walk into the restaurant, dimly lit, instantly brings you back to the medieval Europe where people treats you like the king! Pity that i could only vaguely remember my visits to the old Hugo's before it shut down years ago. all i remember is the rose that i received from the restaurant as a gift to their customers

We went here for my ma's birthday last year short after its re-opening. Hugo's might have switched to a new address but there's something perceptual about this place: the decor, the service, the general atmosphere, and of course, the menu. The name of the restaurant guarantees not only the quality and taste of the dishes, but also the classic and traditions that it insists upon, and works to preserve.The bread basket: three kinds of bead-the garlic toast,mini baguettes and round dried fruit buns. Would be much better had they been warm tho-now that the garlic toast had gone sorta stale because its cold, and the mini baguettes, tangy and too chewy, were wasted. The sweet,round bun with raisins and dried fruits was extremely lovely, and i could not stop myself from buttering it (wit the room-temperature butter) and pushing it into my mouth! we ordered three appetizers, the first being the Caesar Salad - prepared table side. Given the portion its actually one of the most expensive Caesar salads too. But its also the best in Hong Kong as it was not only prepared table side, its also made from nothing. The dressing is not made in advanced but mixed in front of the customers, which was then nicely tossed into the delicate pieces of lettuce, finally topped with croutons, bacon bits and cheese. It was D-E-L-I-C-I-O-U-S. Ive never tasted such sweetness in the dressing before. It had a strong flavour of egg yolk and lemon juice and - was there mustard? but there cant be - a little spiciness in the dressing. The taste of it simply fills up your mouth once you take a bite into the lettuce, making it the most enjoyable salad i have ever had. Steak tartare was also prepared table side. We love the beef tartare at Tifffin's, chilled on an iced bowl and ate with thin crisps. Here they toss it fresh and serve with a thick slab of crispy toast. And man, the tartare here is marvellous! The chef gave us a sample to taste if its salty enough before serving it to us. The steak used are clearly of a high quality as they carry the natural sweetness of beef. The amount of mustard and capers were just alright, not too much as to cover the natural taste of the meat - man. There's no way of returning as what I tasted basically redefined what 'delicious' means!Shrimp cocktail.The shrimps arent huge-as compared to what's at Morton's-but they are certainly full of the flavour of the sea, extremely spongy and hell, they tasted much better with the thousand island dressing which came with it. The dressing you usually have outside are so rich and fattening that drives you to nuts, and they dont taste good in anyway. This one was different as it was so, so refreshing and light but sweet. Marvellous.Lobster Bisque. Of course. Who doesnt try their signature Lobster Bisque at Hugo's? Also prepared table side, the soup was cooked after the brandy was flammed and the pot was warmed. Served steaming hot, they do have all the reasons to be called a true classic. It was so rich in flavour that it almost brought me to tears as i drank in. The soup had just the right texture and consistency, and it was thick and rich with the aroma and sweetness of the lobster. The little pieces of lobster flesh were spongy and extremely tasty. Despite a little too salty, it was within the acceptable range and- i just fail to search for the word to describe the drinking experience. It was too good to be true, really, and theres no doubt that it is the BEST in hong kong.I drank much slower than my parents did as I wanted to savour each and every spoonful of the soup, recording the taste and everything better in my mind. Its a waste if you drink too hasty and soon forget about the flavour.Pepper steak, also prepared table side. I start to wonder how many percent is actually cooked in the kitchen since the floor seemed to be more busy with chefs preparing dishes outside...anyway, the steak was certainly good. I only tried a little after it turned cold, and yet it was still juicy and tender to the max, as smooth as silk on your tongue but taints you with the flavour of the meat. The pepper on top gave a little spiciness to the meat. Marvelous.Australian Black Angus rib of beef from the carving wagon with Yorkshire Pudding.That slab of meat looked too big to me. I didnt get to try it but i think it must had been good,judging from the facial expression of my dad as he craved in. The Yorkshire pudding tasted a little like croissant so he said.Lobster Thermidor. It has become the new i-want-nothing-but-you-dish whenever i dine at steakhouses. I thought the Thermidor i had at JW's California was good enough. I was wrong. Hugo's one was much, much better that it basically surpassed the one i had in all aspects. Two halves of a whole lobster was served, with the flesh scoped out and baked with cream, yogurt, cheese and brandy, then restuffed into the shell. Man, the taste of the cream sauce was so good that I wanted so bad to soak it up with a piece of bread and clean it all! The rich sauce had not covered up the taste of the lobster flesh as the flavour was simply condensed and locked into the flesh, and exploded in my mouth as i bit in. Man. I could hardly speak while eating as i worry the flavour would escape from my mouth once i open it!It was good. It was really good that it basically reset my definition of 'delicious' and 'scrumptious' in my little dictionary of food!Side dishes were warmed on a silver warmer. We ordered two and together with the baked potatoes that came with the ribs, we had three in total. All were delicious. The creamy spinach was not tooooo rich (as it always is elsewhere), and chopped so finely that you hardly have to chew before it slipped down your throat, sweetening it with the taste of the cream. The sauteed mushroom was rich in flavour and a bit into the mushroom came the juice which exploded out. Even the baked potatoes was nice(but i could not eat too much), and i like how the bacon bits are. They are the genuine bacon bits, not the bacon-flavoured whatever. It was good. It was just-good. After enjoying our delicious meal my father suddenly asked for a Bailey's on the rock, which was basically coffee plus liqueur. A little too sweet for me, but enjoyable and certainly one of the best drinks you can have after a delicious meal as it had been.

Our table was then cleaned, all breadcrumbs and mess from the food wiped off by a briskly waiter, and there came the dessert menu.....

Despite the visually stunning effect they didnt taste good, to be frank. The crispy coating of chocolate tasted a little bland and 'thin' to me, and the vanilla ice cream was certainly beaten by the ice-cream we just craved in. But oh well, whatever...like whatever else we had throughout the meal, it is what makes Hugo's a classic of Hong Kong. The insistence on quality and history instead of changing swiftly to match with the new trends in the society is just not what Hugo's would do.

But theres' something that has changed over the decades-Hugo's isnt always as stagnant as it might appear to be - and I was SHOCKED to hear the singer singing 'BAD ROMANCE' at Hugo's. Yes, BAD ROMANCE by LADY GAGA, sung and played upon request at HUGO's. My head turned my 90 degrees as i hear the clear 'ah ah ah ah ah' from the other side of the restaurant. I was joking with my mum what would happen if I requested 'Beat It' from the singer-and there he was, singing Lady Gaga. Oh lord, what a classic. I shouldnt have let him go when he sung for our table, first a birthday song and then an old song requested by my dad.

A marvelous night it had been. The food was absolutely delicious,and theres no way you could complain about it. The service was good, although theres certain coldness in some of the waiters. One thing i had to point was that the lady at the reception wasnt very friendly as i brought the icecream cake in advance and our convo made me feel like a stupid fool. Is it because I look too young and indecent to deserve more politeness from the staff? Everything else was alright and acceptable.

Another surprise for the night (apart from the BAD ROMANCE) was that you could waive 20% off your bill if you pay with a HSBC platinum card. It had certainly helped quite a lot as its expensive to eat at Hugo's after all.

Thanks to Hugo's for everything and i really hope it had been an enjoyable evening for my birthday Daddy

Visited on a Friday evening with bf, and was seated in one of the cosy half- round coasters - pretty pleasant and romantic. Menu selection was kinda expected - old school / classic western food. Ordered steak tartar for starter and lamb rack for main, both a la carte items. Bf ordered the classic set which has a couple more dishes. The lobster bisque and chocolate souffle were impressive.Steak tartar - ok, there's room for improvement in terms of the seasoning. The meat itself was fresh.The lamb rack and steak Au poivre were mediocre. Alaska bomb - mediocre, the one at sunning restaurant was better.Overall- nice ambiance. A plus for having live music ( or a guy singing with guitar). Definitely not fine dining.
