In the Middle and Mediocre Just OK Jun 15, 2012
Share with MessengerShare on TwitterShare on Facebook
Burgers can be as cheap as local Hong Kong style ones or McDonald's yet it can also be as sophisticated as gourmet food. There could be such a huge difference, from a very economical price to an expensive one. There ought to be some at the middle in between such extreme.
Located in North Point, at a very local area, I really wasn't expecting a decent restaurant or shop selling great western food. The presence of Burger Mix sort of caught my attention easily then but I also kind of expected it to be some sloppy Hong Kong style burgers as well.
This is a take-away shop, with no seats around. There are some public benches nearby though. I ordered a burger set and then sat at one of the public benches to wait.
I thought it was going to take some time but the burger was ready sooner than I expected. They packed everything into a paper bag, and the quality of the paper bag is certainly better than those in many fast food restaurants. And that has impressed me a bit.
I returned to the bench and decided to start my supper. A burger set included a burger, fries and a drink in about $30, depending on what burger you picked. I picked the Mushroom Cheese Burger, costing $22 for a la carte, and $33 for set.

Both the burger and the fries were freshly made and hot. I allowed them to cool down a little bit and then first started with the burger. The burger bun is very warm and fluffy, with sesame on top. The mushrooms used were merely normal canned button mushrooms, and the cheddar cheese used, I believe, were merely common cheap ones either. Nonetheless, even with cheap ingredients, it tasted good, thanks to the beef patty. The beef patty was not very thick but it's flavorful. It delighted me as it's not dry and remained some juiciness.

Even though the mushroom may not taste exactly fresh and that the cheese may not taste rich enough, the beef patty was indeed better than I expected. To me, it felt like it's a combination of the local taste of burger and that of the western. It has its rough local characteristics and also something kind of exquisite as western gourmet food.
Burgers are such popular food item around the globe and different people have different standards for it. This shop makes me feel like it stands at the middle in between the two extreme standards, just to satisfy different people. People who couldn't afford a decent burger may have a chance to get to know a little bit more about it from here, while those who normally have an exquisite burger may also get to understand how a local street style one tastes. It seems to me it got both the elements but of course its standard is far from that of a decent gourmet burger and not authentic enough for a local street style one. As I say, it's somewhere in the middle, and serving mediocre.

This is only my 4th time visiting here, and I only bought chips on 1 occasion. For some reason I find the service and hygienes here to be very amateurish as no one washes their hands. mad But recently they have started selling an Angus Beef Burger and for only $40 including burger and 1 drink, if sounded enticing enough for a re-try.

If I had to pick, I will pick this over Burgeroom or Shake'em Buns any day. The others are so full of 'fillers', unlike the very natural hand beaten patties here.

I have been a loyalty customer for Burger Mix in the past. Recently, I have visited Burger Mix again. The experience was very disappointing... huffy

I am not sure if this is due to the fact that their business has really been going too well. The service is definitely not acceptable. The people are there more for their own fun than serving us as a customer. When I was trying to ask the guy there a few more questions before I made my choice, he definitely wasn't very helpful and tried to make me to make a decision quickly. And, the place is definitely very dirty. In this summer time, it is just too hard to wait in this dirty environment... huffy

Despite these two problems, the food quality is actually not bad... I am not sure if I will go back again....

i love the burgers here. taste great, price is good, staff manners are satisfactory. but its HYGIENE SUCKS. the mgt needs to work SERIOUSLY on this. staff need to remember that they shouldn't touch the food their customers are going to put into their mouth after they touch the money (this happened very frequently) or after they scratch their body parts (i witnessed this once - but frankly, with this one it doesn't really help if you wash your hands in front of me afterwards). i've been there multiple times during the past 12 months and they didn't seem to have this mentality. i would LOVE to visit again but it's being gross at this point. i hope they'll improve soon. it's difficult to find a good burger place in hk.

open kitchen is a good idea. it's not going to help by hiding its view from the customers. work on the hygiene. it's not difficult to fix at all.

(date of purchase not specific, but some time in june 2010)

Burger Mix is a fast food shop selling bugers. The area there is very small. There just have few tables for you to use.The shop just have a small kitchen and it is an open kitchen ,so you can see what is the cook doing and how the cook make a burger.

There are many burgers in Buger Mix ,but I want to introduce the most famous burger - cheese burger. There are many ingredients inside ,like lettuce ,tomatos and some spiceal sauce .The beef they use is come from Australia.Every morning they will beat the beef by using their hands .They make the beef just after you order. They also use the oven to make the bread become warm .The taste of cheese burger is very juicy and yummy .The price of a cheese burger is about $20.THe other thing that I want to introduce is fry chicken .The taste of fry chicken is a little spicy .But it is really tasty .Although the price is not very cheap ,it coast about $18 / cup .

lol really should get some awards after doing hw for a few hours!!
We came to North Point from CWB for Burger MIX!!!

We ordered a Mushroom with cheese and meat burger!!!! It was awesome!!!
    1. The meat is so-called 'handmade' but I don't know. It's so juicy that I wanna have another one just after I had finished one. The flavor of meat is full of my mouth!!!! OMG, it's good!

    2. The cheese is melted and like a real sauce instead of a piece of cheese. you know, some restaurant like Mcdonald would do this. I can see the cheese are flowing out!!! WONDERFUL!

    3. The burger is fine and the mushrooms are good too.

    4. The price is so darn reasonable! $18 can eat a awesome, delicious and juicy burger!!
    Can you find anywhere else?

COME AND SUCK IT INTO YR MOUTH!!!! like I and Fat mui mui did. HAHA really glad to see you are happy with it.
    AWESOME BURGER!

Yummy chips Smile Jul 09, 2009
Share with MessengerShare on TwitterShare on Facebook
Again I was drawn to this place because of chips, not the chips itself, but the cheese sauce, not the melted cheese type, but a smooth runny cheddar sauce.

I like various styles of chips, especially poutine, gravy and chips, curry sauce and chips.

Anyway the chips here and the sauce complemented each other very well. Firstly the chips were light golden yellow, and not too burnt, giving it a crispy skin with a nice and soft starchy centre.
The oil was fresh, hence there was no foul taste in it.
The sauce was nice and runny, and salty enough to flavor the chips.
It reminds me of the American Cheese sauce, shown on the pic, but not as thick as that, and the sauce here does not go thick after a while.

I was a bit hesitant in trying outside food bars due to the hot weather, but the chips were hot, but not piping hot, and they were ready very quickly too, so either they had been done for a while.

I wanted to try the burgers, but there wasn’t a comfortable environment to eat.

Price wise, I thought the fries were a bit expensive, just a small cup, but since the quality was so good, I thought it was worth it. Comparing the cost of fries and their burgers, they both cost around $1X so if you are ordering burgers and adding additional fries, it would be a better deal.

In the distant future, when the weather cools down, I will probably try their burgers, mainly because the reviews say the patty is thin, and also the cheese sauce is good.
Apart from the tuna burger I had at Freshness, I believe this is the second place in HK that serves it, but only for breakfast/afternoon periods.

The menu saids you can choose the fillings, sauce, but it didnt say what sauces they had, so I am guessing the usual tomato, cheese, mustard etc.

Even if food is not an option, the drinks would be an option to me, Grape smoothie sounds interesting, Apple honey, and exciting sodas such as Peach, Strawberry.

The price for the sodas are quite reasonable too for $10. The smoothies are also quite cheap for $15 too, usually they are at least $30 or more. They even have milkshake too, but not sure what standard they are.

I hope next time I visit, their fries are still at that standard, not overcooked, and their frying oil is kept fresh.

A new burger joint around Fortress Hill, and it beats other burgers joints around the neighborhood like Macs and Burger King any day.

Most important of all the prices are way competitive compared to other burger joints out there. While joints like Shake'em Buns charge you way over the top, Burger Mix is a lot cheaper, but yet the quality and quantity of it's burger isn't anywhere like Macs Big Mac.

Unfortunately the location of their store is kind a poor, but don't let it discourage you to give these guys a try. Remember, if your going to be a stereo-type your bound to miss a lot of great things. And Burger Mix is one thing you don't want to miss for sure.

Of course, there still new and there are a lot of room for improvements. Like their team coordination, operation flow, staff discipline, timing, communication, staffs attitude and in a way, there quantity of their drinks and fries. But it's still enough for any appetite. When I said their staff attitude, I don't mean bad but they need to take their roles a little more seriously.

Saying all that. the bottom-line is that the price for their burgers are absolutely reasonable. You are paying for a low price, but getting a Shake'em Bun size burgers. A hell lot cheaper too! Of course, don't expect too much, but it's still good enough to get an A grade for sure.

Surprising Newcomer! Smile Jun 09, 2009
Share with MessengerShare on TwitterShare on Facebook
I thought I'd read wrong with the prices here but they really are only around $18-22 each, that's putting them into McDonald's territory. That's surprise no.1.

Surprise no 2? The beef patties here have a lot of 'beef flavour', despite being too thin (therefore slightly dry in centre too). It also had a fair bit of tendons and fat inside, but didn't feel as gritty as the one I had at Bowl Burger.

The Hongkongnised bread bun was overly spongy however, being from one of the main 2-3 suppliers... It could have been toasted a bit more and then pressed a bit more first.

Since I ordered a Mushroom with Cheese version, it actually came with an Eggy sauce but after it melted with the Cheese, I couldn't tell if it was only Eggy or half Eggy/half Cheesy. There's also a bit of mayonnaise thrown in, just as all Hong Kongnised burgers and pizzas do. I actually quite liked the sauce combinations however.

Unfortunately, my previously best preferred Absolute Burger in Delaynomore has gone downhill majorly, their patties aren't even the sizes they advertise at anymore and they're like around $75 for a burger, which is absurd. That burger has shrunk significantly in 'height' and substance.

This burger is a good substitute, even though the Pattie is kinda smallish it made up for it with 'taste'. This is even visually noticeable as the meat here is a natural red/brown and also tastes more meat than spongy bread, the latter a nuisance in most Hong Kong burger joints. Nothing beats a freshly made McDonald's Quarter Pounder though (even though the Hong Kong version is somehow smaller, more dry and the bread too spongy).

A mid '3' to low '4' here for now.
A VERY VALUE FOR MONEY BURGER, WITH BIG TASTE.

HOWEVER, MAJOR HYGIENE PROBLEMS. The burger maker does not wear gloves and handles money or talks on his mobile phone, then keeps using bare hands to make your burger. Eat at your own peril!

If there is anything that can spread faster than the flu, it's gotta be one of two things -- rumours and food trends. Rumours and gossips we cannot help, as even the noblest soul can be portrayed these days as "patronizing" and got a spinoff into a perfect example of prime mockery. Food options, however, spread faster than we can anticipate. This day one shop opens, the next day it went on TV, on the newspapers, on the magazines, and then everyone knows about it. The burger invasion was like that, wasn't it? Burger King arrived in Hong Kong decades ago, left, and returned with vengeance. Burger-joints opened up faster than babies were born (well ok, that was exaggerated...) but one cannot deny that you can see a burger joint just about anywhere in HK these days.

And now there is one in North Point, precisely, Fortress Hill.

Taking space next to the famed 福元湯丸 is this little joint occupying a storespace with just 2 seats, with the counter doubled as cashier, where the cash machine occupied the narrow space against the fridge/ freezer where the food are kept before ordering. The shop front was narrow and tight and space was not indulged, while takeout is highly encouraged. Burger Mix is the latest venture of burger joints, and opening here in North Point says it all -- the pricing is reasonable for students alike to splurge on lunch, and possibly breakfast since they open every day at 7 am.

The specialty is not to be missed -- the handmade beef burger, each patty weighing exactly 100g (before cooking). The beef was ground but not mushed up. Each one was made into a round patty before tossed onto the hot griddle and pan fried (while being pressed occasionally) until the burger was ready. THOMAS, the owner of Burger Mix, proudly introduced me to the burger and showed me step by step on how the burger is created from the start...The toasted sesame seed bun was first smeared lightly with mayonnaise, followed by crisp onion rings, lettuce, and two ruby red slices of tomatoes. The other half was gently smothered with mustard, ketchup and a few bits of gherkins before the hot pan-fried beef patty atop the entire half-bun. It was executed in such dedication that made me wonder .. at the busiest of lunch hours, would they still bear the smiles and tuck the wrapping paper in like they did with mine?

The burger was of a reasonable size and made with such care that when I unwrapped the paper, I couldn't help but "devour" into the sandwich. When I did, the sauces did not burst all over my clothes, it was just about right. But I expected the meat patty bursting with juices, that, was not up to my expectations. The meat tasted alright, with no influence from an overdose of herbs or a patty out of mythic proportions. The size was just about right, if I could just add one room for improvement, that is, to have the meat fried for shorter time, because after you take it out of the griddle, it will still cook, and sometimes being slightly underdone will end up with a perfect burger patty when the customer eats it.

The burger came with a combo -- with French Fries and a beverage. I upped my combo into cheesy fries (pictured here) and lime soda. The Cheesy Fries was piping hot when served, and despite it tasted somewhat like a less-sloppy version of cheese-whizz over hot potato fries, I must admit that it's rather enjoyable, more so than I paid 30 dollars for a lousy bowl of Mad Potato with the cheese ever so orange and salty that I could worry about future kidney functions over prolonged consumption. Not this one, the fries are crispy and hot and only mildly flavoured with salt, and the cheesy mixture got to the bottom of the paper carton so that all the fries would get at least some cheese, now how's that for being thoughtful? The lime soda was a major disappointment. It was made with a mild green syrup and soda water. The proportions must've been off since I couldn't taste the citrus nor did it look the part. The green colour gave off a slightly blue hue, I know I could've gone for a better soda choice instead.

The special thing about Burger Mix is you get to personalize, much like any other burger joints out there. Instead of froufrou ingredients, Burger Mix is not afraid to show the true roots of "localized" ingredients based on favorites and not novelty. You're free to dress up your burger with additional toppings like an egg ($3), cheese ($4), bacon ($5), even deep fried porkchop or another patty ($10 each). There are also sodas, smoothies and milkshakes to choose from. Breakfasts and Tea-sets get a complimentary beverage while at other times combo range from $27 to $33 with one standard sized fries and beverage. At the time of writing the shop is still new, the service may be a little slow but that I can see improved within a short period of time. I'm glad that the burger which moved eastward was something of familiarity, instead of some high hopes to introduce pretentious burger-look-alike to a neighborhood where the only burgers that ever touched this neighborhood was of McDonald's, and most recently. BurgerKing from 2 blocks away. Let's hope that people will embrace the new burger in the neighborhood!!
