Heavy Burger for Big Hunger Smile Jul 21, 2012

Suddenly craving for american food on a weekday. Have never tried Ruby Tuesday in HK. So decided to give it a try this time. Got there at 6 pm. The resturant was more than half full shocked Most of them were having afternoon tea. I was brought to a table for four. Then the receptionist told me that the table has to be returned at 7:15 pm. That's fine with us. Just having a thought that it is a very popular restaurant!

Knowing that they offer american portion, My hubby and I didn't order any appitizers, but just two entrees: Baby Back Ribs (full slab), Colossal Burger and a coke.

After a 15 min wait, they were finally served.

Rib is a bit too soft.
Rib is a bit too soft.

The ribs were smelling so good, which really brought up my appetite tongue It's really a big portion. It came with two scoops of mashed potato and some vegetables. Tried the first bite... um... I like the BBQ flavor. The rib was tender. But.... to us, it's a bit too soft. Even though you don't have strong teeth you shouldn't have any problem eating it. So, in this case, I think Dan Ryan's makes better ribs. The side dish was good though, especially the mashed potato. I like the buttery flavor and its texture which was not overly mashed.

The burger was great! It's Wagu beef, which was very juicy and flavorful tongue And as seen in the picture, it's really really big! Two of us just finished one layer. The fries were just ok. It'll be great if it could be more crispy.

Finally, we were too full to try any dessert. I guess we will come back to try the signature dessert, Tall Cake, next time.

$365 for two with the credit card discount (40% off). Otherwise it's $600+. I think it's over priced.

    Supplementary Information:
Using Standard Chartered credit card you get 40% off. The deal is valid till end of Aug.

Service is stellar, but ...  Jul 22, 2011

Ruby Tuesday has great service at the Shatin branch in New Town Plaza. But I doubt I will visit any Ruby Tuesday in Hong Kong ever again because the food has become just too expensive. The salad bar has been cut back (no bacon bits), and they still have the nerve to charge HK$78 for ONE trip. Good grief, it's not as if the chain is so desperate that it has to charge this much for a salad bar! Not even in New York City would a customer be charged US$10 for the salad bar and be told, "Sorry, you can go only once."

I was seated immediately on a Sunday around 1:30 p.m. I chose a pasta dish with the salad bar and iced tea. Nothing wrong with the food per se, but it's not worth the exorbitant price. I can just imagine if I had chosen a really expensive entree. Worst of all, iced tea with unlimited refills costs HK$46! Again, it's not as if Ruby Tuesday will ever go broke over iced tea! I would think HK$30 should be the absolute top considering how cheap it is to make.

Sorry, guys, there are plenty of other places that serve food as good as yours for a more reasonable price.

A month before this dinner, I went to this Ruby Tuesday for lunch . I thought I was just having a bad luck to have a poorly cooked steak. After this dinner, I decided not to come to RT, at least not this one at Shatin, again.

    Ribs and Steak:
The ribs was overcooked huffy. Although the slow cooking made the bones so soft that I could chew it down, the meat was just so dried out that any regular restaurant could do a better job.

The medium-rare steak I ordered was as poor as the piece I had last time. It was so bad mad The steak looks fine when I cut it. But when I put it in my mouth, the texture tells me that the steak is not medium-rare shocked It tastes like either they boil the steak before they grill it, or they store the raw steak next to a hot stove mad I was soo shocked that a restaurant could RUIN a steak like that, TWICE !

I also had Mini Trio and the side was baked potato. They are better than McDonald and Delifrance. No big surprise.

With the price they are charging, will I come back again? Even I have the membership card, NO.

Ruby Shatin is one of my favorite places with my wife in HK. The staffs are nice, good service and help as much as they can. I feel like their service level surpasses their counterparts in the US. We go there probably once or twice a month, mainly because we have the 50% off card that we want to fully utilize lol

I highly recommend their steaks, especially Ribeye, T-bone, and Sirloin. The Wagyu is even better but the price is getting a bit steep even with the 50% off (like $170 something). I would stick with the original steak instead of those specialty dishes, such as cowboy steak something like that. it just takes out all the steak favorite with the whatever marinates they put in. I order medium and they are being very consistent to make it right. I normally would order an appertizer and the crab cake is my favorite.

Not that satisfying Just OK Nov 27, 2010

    Chocolate tall-cake

In the mood for some binging, I intentionally went alone, with the intention of indulging in this dessert alone.

Was it big? Yes. Was I satisfied? No. I can’t believe I’m saying this, but there was not enough ice-cream. No, two big scoops of it was still not enough to last me through the huge brick of chocolate cake. I was left with chunks of cake without any ice-cream left, which was bad since the cake was rather dry. But yes I finished it anyway.

Also, the layers of dense chocolate cream in between was slightly too dense. It was as if it came out of an overly cold fridge. I do love rich, dense cream, as well as light, puffy, whipped cream, but not so dense that it borders on being hard.

And speaking of the whipped cream, it lacked richness, and I think even Starbucks gives creamier cream.

I also craved more cookie crumbs. Look at that - a craving on top of an unsatisfied craving. Hooray.

But on the whole, it was fun to eat. But how can it not be? I’m 158 cm and had in front of me, all to myself, a tallcake that was literally tall and rose above my head. And when your sweet tooth has been yelling for attention, anything sweet would taste good.

It was just a shame that on an objective level it really wasn’t that great.

Having demolished the last of the crumbs, I made a beeline to McDonald’s and gave in to my second craving for something salty by shoving fries into my mouth.

I booked a table for 8:30pm but was made to wait 10 minutes before a table was set. This leaves me to question their booking service and why a table was not reserved in advance.

Together with my friend, we ordered the following dishes:

Lobster Soup (Soup of the Day) [HK$48]
    Teriyaki Chicken Caesar Salad [HK$142]
    Salmon Carbonara [HK$258]

The Lobster Soup was much like many creme soup with lobster flavouring which tasted great added with sprinkle of herbs and bread crumbs make this dish credit a thumbs up.

The Teriyaki Chicken Caesar Salad was a very generous portion and the quality was okay. Much of the salad tasted like it was packaged and sprinkled with bread crumbs and 4 cherry tomatoes. Unfortunately the chicken did not have any teriyaki sauce or taste and was more like a grilled chicken found in other restaurants. It looked as if it was pre-cooked in a factory and reheated. It had not grilled texture and tasted like those found in fast food outlets.

The Salmon Carbonara like the salad was given in a generous portion with thick salmon steak over tagliatelle smothered in carbonara sause with ham pieces. Mixing the dish allowed the flavour to sink in and gave a great taste but felt dry in mouth much to some disappointment. The garlic bread atop was to me too off the shelf and would not equal that of a proper baked garlic bread which they should have prepared in kitchen.

Overall this was a good satisfactory dinner.

we arrived late (around 10:20pm) and tried their recommended special set, wagyu beef & clam linguini.

the steak is served cool-ish, texture is average, on the dry side, really need to chew it up....
The sides are cold as well, abit lazy, the mashed potato is dry...

the clam linguini is ok, heaps better than the steak (comparatively), then we have strawberries & ice cream for dessert.

one thing that's good about the restaurant is they close later than most of the restaurants in new town plaza, so you can always have a proper meal after 10pm.

Extremely poor service  Aug 30, 2009
Share with MessengerShare on TwitterShare on Facebook
Today I went there for lunch with my family...i dun used to leave commentaries on openrice...but this time it was really a super unpleasant experience and we felt totally deceived that I MUST leave this commentary here to let everyone knows about how these staff in Ruby Tuesday Shatin branch cheated people and keep them alert!!! I think the other branches should be better cuz I tried the CWB one before and it was not that bad...

Actually the food quality was normal...but definitely not worth the price they charged....we ordered a Wagyuu Burger...Trio Burger...Bacon Clam Chowder...Crab Cake and a seafood rice....ended up the bill charged us $900 something...then our server "Edith" suggested us to buy some promotional discount cards emphasizing that it is for our own benefit because we would get a 50% discount right away....without much thought yet we indicated our concern to the server that we dun often dine there...... we finally bought a discount card that will be valid for half a year which costs us $600...then our bill for the meal subsequently cuts down to $500 something...so we paid $1100 in total

After we paid...we found a small card on our table and realized about the Citibank credit card promotion offering 60% discount with no upfront fee...which we never knew about before cuz the server never mentioned about it at all......so we asked her why she didnt tell us about it as other restaurants would usually asked the customers whether they have certain credit cards to let them know about the promotions as soon as they asked for the bill....Edith said she didnt tell us because we never asked her!...err....excuse me??? i thought this is supposed to be part of her job!!! how rediculous!!! we were so disappointed and felt totally deceived!!!! Cuz we truly dont often eat there and if we know about the Citibank promotion before hand, we will definitely use it instead!!!!!

Yet after hearing us complained, she didnt offer to void the bill or raise up for any rectification action.....we just feel that their staffs were so unprofessional...they dun care about their customers at all and just want sell their discount cards at any cost to earn this upfront fee....so people...if u will dine there in the future, be sure to keep alert of their miselling practices...this is a true story and has not been exaggerated at all...

    Poor service - waiteress   Aug 05, 2009
Share with MessengerShare on TwitterShare on Facebook
I dated 2 group of different friends in Ruby Tuesday at the same day in different time slot tonight. However, I was late for the 1st time slot while my 1st group of friends already finished their dinner when I arrived. As I am VIP member, I used my card to enjoy the 50% off with my friends. However, the waitress, huffy saw that I used my card but not having dinner with my friends, then she went to tell the other waiter and when I order food for my friends in 2nd time slot, she was all night black face to me! Her service was too bad and made me feel angry but I thought it's not a bid deal as only her attitude was bad but others were good, so I not complained for her attitude to the manager.

However, I received a email from them and warn me not share my card with others in the next day!!!! huffy How come a big restaurant can do such things behind the customer! I was there for meal with my friends from two groups and use the VIP card twice at the same day. Is it that I cannot do this? I am the customer who buy the VIP card for own use. How come they can send such email to warn me but not advise me face to face if they felt that I use the card twice for myself and my friends was not acceptable!! Especially her service was really really bad!!! huffy I never met a waitress in Ruby Tuesday as her with such service standard to customers!!

Is that they have commission when selling the VIP card and they fail to sell to me and my friend, then treat me in such bad attitude? The cost of VIP is not cheap! But with such service and even send email.......

Even with the coupon from Open rice, I still think this restaurant is overcharging its customers. We tried the lasagna and the wagyu burger for dinner, both of which were quite poorly done. The lasagna was very greasy and oily and taste just so-so, in fact it was not much different from what one would get from an ordinary restaurant. Yet it was priced at 140+ per dish ! Likewise, the wagyu beef burger was far from satisafactory, and far below ones' expectation. The "wagyu" just tasted like the usually beef you could get from other fast food joints. The fruit drink was way too sweet - we could hardly finish half the glass. Service and environment were just average. We probably would not visit this place again. sad

I haven't have a good ol' american burger since arrving in HK and I really enjoyed it. Service is good, portion great, taste delicious, the burger was yummy. It was nice that my friend and I get to sit in the restaurant and chit chat for a bit. The only peeve I have was apprently we counted the money wrong when we pay the pay and gave the waitress 40 cents short, and it was so appalling to have her running out and shouting at us as if we owe her $40. It was just that little incident that screwed the experience up.

As a branch of the family of restaurants, this shop managed to keep most of the originality of the setting and taste. Personally, I like the ribs in Ruby Tuesday more than that in the Tony Roma. The soup in bread is always interesting. It also serves the refillable drinks as in most American restaurants.
